After over a month polls and voting we have finally reached the final (albeit predictable) conclusion...
Congratulations to Mr. Hemulen for being, scientifically, the best Hemulen in the Moomin franchise!
The jack of all trades and the impossible achiever has yet another major achievement under his belt to go along with his complete stamp collection and 2 flower discoveries! Good for him!
Then in second place we have Wimsy! With his inexplicable charms despite his relative obscurity he managed to make it to the top of his side of the bracket! He can sleep well under the dining table knowing well how many people adore him for being himself.
In shared third place we have the Inspector and the Hemulen Who Loved Silence! The Inspector is for certain the best character in his category of being a police hemulen by virtue of being the only policeman to be actively kind to people, and the Hemulen Who Loved Silence seems to have gotten that far by virtue of relatability and wholesomeness! How sweet!
-
Well, that's it for now! Whatever happens to this blog afterwards I'm not sure - I'm thinking of either making it a reblog blog dedicated to Hemulens with some trivia/speculation/polls thrown in or yet another project I have to keep up with (I'm thinking of making it a sort of Hemulen-lead arg which uses asks to tell the story), but who knows! Thanks for voting!
Until next time, see you later!

It is time for the Best Hemulen Tournament!
32 hemulen contestants compete in pairs in polls of popularity to see which one is truly the most popular. Each poll lasts for a single week and each round will eliminate half of the contestants until a single one remains victorious!
The winner of the tournament will get bragging rights, a slightly damaged chair and the Hierophant Award of Saint Hemulus (yes that is a canon saint mentioned in the comics)!
Hemulens have been an integral part of the Moomin franchise ever since the first book, in fact, they are arguably the most iconic and reoccurring figures next to the Moomins. Some are authority figures, others are scientists, others have other jobs and the rest are a few oddballs with hobbies, and all of them have autistic swag.
However, there's an outward lack of appreciation for the creatures, so I'm here to see the opinions of others on the matter of who is the best - Could it be the iconic Mr. Hemulen in the purple dress? Or could it be someone unexpected? Nobody knows until we find out!
While participating, please be sure to vote for every poll in the tournament. I also recommend reblogging the polls and related posts so that others will notice and participate in this grand event, numbers are key to discerning a true winner and a contestant with dumb luck due to the sample size.
You may also create content for the polls to promote your favorite character, a great part of this tournament is about the fun in competitiveness! So like horse race betters, please cry the name of your favorite steed, it definitely won't go unnoticed!
Happy voting!

Mr. Hemulen
Originally from Comet in Moominland, then continuing his role in Finn Family Moomintroll (in fact, he's the only Hemulen to appear in more than one book from the main book series!), he was a grumpy and oblivious old man who only ever focused on his stamps, but after he finished his collection and took up plant collecting, his character softened. He was later fully adapted into the 90s series, becoming a very often reoccurring character who offers his knowledge on plants and other fields of science.
The Inspector
An unorthodox reoccurring Hemulen originating from the comics and becoming a reoccurring character in most animated adaptations, rather than being characterized by his job or even as being rude, he is a goofy and well-meaning police inspector who is more interested in the care of his roses than policing the already often peaceful Moominvalley. Gender non-conforming in interests and characterized as either oblivious or downright kind, he may be the only policeman you'd want to get arrested by (he even cooks food for his prisoners!)
He is also one of the few major hemulens who has an on-screen romance with another character (the Mymble's daughter in the 90s series), though his queercoding and lack of interaction with her in the comics makes it very odd as an adaptation.

Welcome to the first round of the Best Hemulen Bracket!
I am your host, @flowerbloom-arts, and over the next few weeks we are going to pick our favorite hemulens from each pair, carefully selected according to commonality.
There are many, many hemulens in the Moomin franchise as a whole, but who is the best?
After careful considering, I sadly must only pick 32 of them to compete against eachother. You may not know some of them, but I will be providing information on each one for each poll!
Polls:
Side 1:
Mr. Hemulen (bug collector) vs Mr. Hemulen (plant collector)
Aunt Hemulen vs Nana's Fiance/Mr. Hemulen's Nephew
Party Dresser vs Riviera Boutique Keep
Charity Volunteer vs La Goona
The Pisciculturist vs the Philatelist
The Botanist vs the Zoologist
The Inspector vs Henry
Officer 1 (Moomin Begins a New Life) vs Officer 2 (Moomin Builds a House)
Side 2
The House Seller vs Sadling
Wimsy vs the Big Hemulen
The Park Keeper vs the Park Wardress
The Small Hemulen vs the Jailer
The Orphanage Principal vs the Hemulen Aunt
The November Hemulen vs the Hemulen Who Loved Silence
Dragon Adopter vs Intruder
Hatton the Prospector vs the Muffle
-
Here are some reasons why I chose these hemulens in particular, you may skip this part:
1. I didn't pick any 2019 Hemulens because they tended to be rather muddled adaptations of other pre-existing hemulens. You may consider those versions when it comes to voting if you'd like, but be warned, nearly none of them are accurate to the source material.
2. The Hemulens had to have atleast 2 panels of dialog (the Charity Volunteer) or a relevant role to the story's plot (the Dragon Adopter and Intruder). So, apologies to the cowboy Hemulens from Moomin Goes Wild West and the like.
3. These are honestly the 32 I could remember off the top of my head, there were a handful few others but these were the ones I was personally interested in enough to remember.
4. Sadly some resources are unavailable to me like the Fuzzy Felt adaptation, so if there were any hemulens exclusive to that show that you were confused as to why they weren't included, I'm very sorry.
5. Some characters are either in a grey area or difficult to tell if they're meant to be hemulens, so I picked those who are unmistakably hemulens or atleast generally accepted as such.

Welcome to the FINAL ROUND of the Best Hemulen Bracket!
I am your host, @flowerbloom-arts, and we are now finally at the long-awaited, most important poll of the tournament!
2 out of the 32 contestants have made it to the end of their respective sides of the bracket, and now they must face eachother off! So now's the time to ask the most important question in the last few weeks...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mr.
Wimsy
A recurring minor character in the comics, he is Moominpappa's old best friend from his youth. He is a constant smoker, poker player and prefers to sleep under the table rather than a bed, but he is a charming and fun man who also became friends with Snufkin as they were building a jetty in Moomin and the Golden Tail. He also played a major role in Moominpappa and the Spies, in which he and Moominpappa try to relive their youth but get caught up in Soviet espionage.
He also gets adapted into an episode of the 90s second series, though with a new look and an original plot.

Mr. Hemulen the Bug Collector
Originally from Comet in Moominland, he was a nervous old man who accidentally saved our main group of children and asked them about the Comet, mistaking it for a type of moth. He was later partially adapted as Mr. Hemulen in Mūmin and Shin Mūmin as part of the main cast, becoming a kindly old man who has multiple hobbies at once, simultaneously collecting stamps (though seemingly quitting that after the first episode), butterfly collecting, and horn playing.
Mr. Hemulen the Plant Collector
Originally from Comet in Moominland, then continuing his role in Finn Family Moomintroll (in fact, he's the only Hemulen to appear in more than one of the main book series!), he was a grumpy and oblivious old man who only ever focused on his stamps, but after he finished his collection and took up plant collecting, his character softened. He was later fully adapted into the 90s series, becoming a very often reoccurring character who offers his knowledge on plants and other fields of science.

8 out of the 32 contestants have made it to the third round, dear heavens! There seems to be some obvious choices on the left side of the bracket, while the right side seems not-so obvious, but will things take an unexpected turn? Vote and find out!

Hatton the Prospector
A character who only appears in the 90s episode the Treasure Hunt, he is a prospector with an expertise in rocks and is looking for gold (but not for himself). He visits Moominhouse for some tea and comes down with a terrible fever for the next few weeks, after he gets better, he leaves the Moomins with a map to supposed gold, though he doesn't believe in it himself. This starts a chain reaction where everyone in Moominvalley is looking for gold in that exact spot, leading to the formation of Mr. Hemulen's new garden.
The Muffle
A character who only appears in the 90s episode the Big Explosion, he fancies himself a famous inventor but only invents practically useless things based on already existing things (perhaps he's a delusional novelty artist?). He came to Moominvalley to help out the Snork and his flying boat by providing an efficient and powerful source of energy despite the boat only using liquid fuel, only to be kicked out by the Snork for being a fraud. He then forces his help late at night with the help of Stinky's lockpicking and accidentally blows up the flying boat, then gets arrested by the Inspector.

Dragon Adopter
A small but important character in the Last Dragon on Earth chapter of Tales From Moominvalley, he rows down a river looking for fish but no luck. He comes across Snufkin who is looking to get rid of the tiny dragon and the Hemulen felt suspicious because he's not used to receiving gifts. Snufkin then tells him what to do with the dragon and sends him on the way.
Hatton the Prospector
A character who only appears in the 90s episode the Treasure Hunt, he is a prospector with an expertise in rocks and is looking for gold (but not for himself). Sadling
A minor character in The Conscientious Moomins, he is a representative of the Widow's Weal insurance company and with his gloomy personality manages to make Moominpappa sign up for the insurance if Moominmamma were to ever become a widow.
Nana's Fiance
Not much is known about him besides being Mr. Hemulen's nephew, but we do know he had a disrespect for fireworks before his uncle taught him The Way. He seems like a fine gentleman, engaged to a pretty girl who became exhausted looking for him.

The Botanist
A one-off character from the comic Moominvalley Turns Jungle and then replaced by Mr. Hemulen in the 90s adaptation, he is a single-minded man who only cares to study the plants which had suddenly grown around Moominhouse. Once the man-eating... Things become a major point, he advocates that they're actually plants rather than the animals his rival claims them to be.
The Zoologist
Also a one-off character from Moominvalley Turns Jungle, he comes in later into the story once the zoo animals have been released into Moominhouse by Stinky and is introduced as the Botanist's colleague which he rather dislikes. He advocates that the man-eating things are animals unlike the plants his rival claims them to be.

The Hemulen Aunt
Also known as the Hemulen's aunt, she was presumably the aunt of the orphanage principal from Moominpappa's Memoirs. She was saved from the Groke and was mistaken for her niece by the young Moominpappa and became a very bossy caretaker of the Oshun Oxtra until she got kidnapped by Niblings, and then later became their leader by teaching them writing and math. She isn't a mean woman, in fact she was very grateful toward the Oshun Oxtra in her letter for Muddler's wedding.
The Hemulen Who Loved Silence
The main character of a chapter of Tales From Moominvalley, he lived in a noisy family who ran an even noisier pleasure-ground. After a weeks-long flood washing the pleasure-ground away and his family coming up with the idea of opening an ice rink, he had enough and declared that he wants a pension and move out somewhere quiet. He also says his dream is to build a dollhouse but gets laughed out of wanting it anymore. After he moves to his grandmother's abandoned park, he is made by the children to rebuild the pleasure-ground with the parts they recovered. In the end, he opens a park of silence where there is no screaming or loud laughing, and much to his relief the children still enjoy it.

The Park Wardress
Perhaps the less popular of the park's staff in Moominsummer Madness by an extremely wide margin (but somehow won the last round), the Park Wardress is given slightly more character on screen than her coworker, asking the Woodies which one of them is making the burning rubber smell and parkouring over the fence to get away from the Hattifatteners.
The Small Hemulen
A less minor character from Moominsummer Madness, she is the nervous smaller cousin of the Jailer who keeps her nerves at bay by constantly knitting. When she's put in charge, the prisoners trick her into letting them out by saying they're hungry, she then proceeds to take them to her home and feeds them all sorts of confectionaries. Once she hears out their side of the story, she goes with them to the Midsummer Play to talk to her cousin about the misunderstanding.

The Philatelist
A brief character in Moomin and the Comet, he is a direct reference to Mr. Hemulen's introduction scene in Comet in Moominland, a stamp collector who had his collection ruined from the evacuation and not caring much about the Comet itself, only lamenting his grief at the sudden disorganization of his precious stamps.
