In my head I'm calling this "its glory is all moonshine"
In which the most feared agent of the IMF requests uppies.
~~~
'Just get in the goddamn car, you fun-sized pain in my ass,' Luther bellowed. Ilsa tried not to flinch, but Luther had an impressive set of lungs. He'd been accepted to the Manhattan School of Music to sing opera, she'd heard, but had elected to attend MIT instead. What a different world it would be if Luther Stickell had gone onto the stage.
She and Benji and Ethan would probably be dead, for a start.
They were standing (or sitting, in Ethan's case) outside the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, where they'd all been unceremoniously deposited following the mission in Kashmir three days ago. Ilsa had a somewhat disoriented memory of the journey here — 'Spot of concussion, I should think,' a cheerful round-faced doctor had told her — but the last day and a half was clear enough: dozing in one of the chairs in Ethan's room, playing pinochle with Benji at a nearby cafe, arguing with Luther about which season of Call the Midwife was best while they floated lazily in the hotel pool.
'You're not really selling me on this,' Ethan was saying, rolling his wheelchair back and forth. 'The last time I got in a car with you, you drove us off a cliff.'
'You drove a helicopter off a cliff the other day,' Ilsa reminded him. Ethan made the face that she was rapidly associating with him admitting the point but being deeply unhappy about it.
Luther, meanwhile, had finished shoving the last of their things into the boot. 'Do I have to carry you bridal-style? Because I've done it before and I will do it again.'
Ethan gave him a long look, then lifted his arms. 'What did your daughter used to call it?' he asked. 'Uppies?'
'Fuck you, Hunt,' Luther said, stomping over to the car. 'I'm driving.'
'Do I get shotgun?' Ethan called after him.
'Up your ass, maybe.'
Ilsa glanced over at Benji. 'Are they always like this?'
'Usually worse, I'm afraid,' he muttered back.
'I thought they were just catty with each other because of — you know, the job.'
'No, he's been verbally abusing me for almost twenty-two years,' Ethan said, absently tilting his wheelchair until Benji, impatient, hip-checked the back of it and sent Ethan crashing back down to all four wheels. 'And this guy's been physically abusing me for thirteen.'
'Twelve,' Benji corrected. 'And genuinely, Ethan, please remove thine arse from the wheelchair and get in the car.'
'You haven't told me where we're going,' he said, tilting again. Ilsa was almost impressed by how deeply irritating he was. Three days ago he'd been half-dead on that mountain; now he was trying to get his own colleagues to kill him.
'America,' she informed him, righting his chair a bit more gently than had Benji; Ethan still looked outraged at the presumption. 'You are, according to the doctors, in need of rest and relaxation.'
'I don't know what you've heard about America, but it's not a very restful place right now,' Ethan observed.
Benji made an irritated noise in the back of his throat, like he'd swallowed an eggroll sideways. 'Please, for the love of all that is holy in this world, get in.'
'Well, since you used the magic word,' said Ethan, levering himself upright. It looked painful and ill-advised. 'Am I supposed to be doing this?' he asked, wobbling slightly.
Ilsa got under his right arm as Benji grabbed for his left. 'We'll have to ask Luther when the last time you asked if you were supposed to be doing something,' she said, and his soft chuckle was warm in her ear.
'I get no respect,' he murmured, then complained loudly when she shoved him into the backseat and took shotgun for herself.
2022 - The Second Half!!!
The first half of the year was amazing. In January we shifted to a new place, set up the apartment together, and most important that Shalu and I were spending quality time with one another. We had a few instances where both of us were COVID positive but it was manageable. In April I flew down to Guwahati for a get-together with Rahul, Adi, and Roshan. The trip to Munnar in May was the highlight of them all. It was a romantic trip for us. June came in with multiple good news including my sister having a baby boy and I buying a car for Papa. When I returned from Guwahati, she welcomed me with the most amazing news ever, 'WE WERE PREGNANT'!!! I couldn't thank god enough for blessing me with such a miracle. We celebrated, got her checkup done, and then began the 40 weeks journey of becoming parents. ❤️
The First Trimester (May-June-July)
We got the news on the 22nd of June morning. I was still sleepy and she came up to me with the proof. We hugged each other and thanked god for the beautiful blessing we were showered with. Next few days we were exploring articles and apps for to-be-mothers. We celebrated by going to Timezone and FunCity in Ambience mall on 25th June. On 30th June we went to the airport to see off Faiz and Nagma bhabhi. They were shifting to Germany to begin a new phase of life. They were very happy to hear the news of the baby. July started off with Shanno's birthday celebration. Her friends and our family gathered at Udupi restaurant for dinner. I and Shalu drove on our scooty to the venue. I had to pay very special attention while driving nowadays. Shalini was having her craving period now. She demanded momos and pizza. Momos contain MSG so I avoided it. Watched some YouTube videos and cooked paneer momos at home with wheat flour. They were healthy and tasty as well. In the last week of July, we went to a carnival happening at the Huda ground in sector 29, Gurgaon. My in-laws and their friends from Jasola joined us for the visit. We and the kids enjoyed ourselves a lot.
The Second Trimester (Aug-Sep-Oct)
The first week of August started with yet another trip. Big brother and I went to Nainital to visit several boarding schools best for Subhranshu. We checked out Birla Vidya Niketan and found it very good. In the evening we roamed around the city and visited the Naini lake. Our legs were paining as we walked the school and the markets. After an overnight stay and an adventurous next day, we boarded the train at night for Delhi. From 5th Aug to 8th Aug we celebrated at the office with our colleagues across technology by meeting up and competing in indoor and outdoor games both. Vishal came to stay with us for a few days. Shalini, I, Sonu, and Vishal had a great time together. I got Shalini some silver jewelry to thank her for giving me the good news. Rakshabandhan was celebrated by us with great joy.
It was the 13th of August when we got the news that mom was admitted to Nemcare hospital as she had to take some tests and will be discharged in a couple of days. Things escalated in a couple of days and the news coming in from Guwahati was not good at all. We checked for a good doctor here in Delhi so we can bring mom here for treatment and took a flight to Guwahati with big brother on the 17th Aug evening. We landed and headed straight to the hospital. Looking at mom's condition was really painful. We could not believe she was shifted to ICU and had to be on 24-hour oxygen support on a Bi-PAP machine. Doctors were saying that mom will need to be ventilated but we were not in favor of it as medical facilities in Guwahati are very limited. Finally, we decided to take mom via Train Ambulance to Delhi, a 27-hour-long daunting journey on medical equipment support with a technician who was responsible for the machines and giving medication to her on time. We finally reached Delhi on 23rd Aug and got her admitted to PSRI hospital. She was shifted to ICU and the same night she had to be shifted to the ventilator. I was feeling helpless and shattered while signing the consent form but the carbon content in her body rose to 93% and there was no other way. It was a long night.
For the next 1.5 months, we just waited for her to get better. Everyone came from Guwahati and Di/Jiju also came from Ranchi to check on mother. She was admitted to Neuro-ICU and we had just 15 minutes of meeting time at 12 PM and 6PM. When we used to visit sometimes she was sedated so didn't respond, and other times she asked us to massage her legs since they were paining due to lying on the back for so long. We stayed together in the big brother's house at Jasola since it was closer to the hospital and since father and sister were here. I was unhappy to see Shalini sad and stressed due to the current situation but was helpless. I was asking god, why is he testing us. I imagined I would help Shalini enjoy her pregnancy a lot but things were just not in my control. We celebrated Teej with bhabhi and my sister. Adarsh being there with us was a big joy in that situation. We all loved playing with him and dandle him throughout the day. We celebrated him turning 3 months old on 5th Sep. Most of September I used to travel to the hospital at 11 AM, meet mom for 15 mins and then stay there till 6 PM or go to Jasola for lunch and come back at 6 PM to meet mom again. Looking at her fighting back was amazing. She is the best and the strongest among us. I prayed for her recovery every day. In mid of September, she was tracheostomized, which is an advanced stage of the ventilator. We had to agree with the doctors since there was no option remaining for us. On the other hand, Shalini was having multiple occurrences of vomiting and nausea. I couldn't be of much help but stayed there by her as much as possible. On 30th Sep, we celebrated my birthday at Sonu's place since that day we visited SGMH for some documentation purposes. We celebrated the last day of Navratri at Jasola with the 'kanya bhojan' rasam on 4th October. The doctors said that my mother was better now and that we must shift her to home to avoid the trigger of another infection and slow down the financial stress that we were already facing. Finally, we were able to arrange for the portable ventilator, home ICU setup, and a 24-hour nurse for mom. She was shifted to Gurgaon at our home on the 10th of October. All the arrangements were made for the setup and a round-the-clock nurse was arranged who stayed with us and took care of mom's medicines and daily activities related to a bed-ridden patient. We celebrated Diwali together in Gurgaon and did decorations and Laxmi pooja as well. We were surprised when our sister and Adarsh arrived home to meet mom just after Diwali. It was a very nice moment and everyone was happy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Third Trimester (Nov-Dec-Jan)
We celebrated Adarsh's 'annaprassana' on 3rd Nov where he was given food for the first time by Bhaiya bhabhi and us. Sister flew back to Ranchi in the first week of November. We began taking care of mom as now it was just us in the house. Shalini used to visit the hospital daily and I used to pick up and drop her off at the metro station. She had taken up most of the daily chores in the house. She used to prepare her breakfast and lunch in the morning and I just had to prepare the chapatis in the afternoon. Then in the evening, she used to prepare snacks and finally dinner at night. I used to help in between but it was tough to manage between the office, looking after mom, and the daily chores. She has moved in the third trimester now and began experiencing some fatigue. In mid of November, she received a Mom's kit from Reema (our friend) and burst out in tears. It was then I realized that I had not pampered her enough in the last six months. She was a mother and I did not celebrate this enough with her by making her feel special. It was not a good feeling at all. I promised myself that I will try to make her feel better for at least the rest of her pregnancy. I am not sure if I was able to keep up to the promise but I gave my best.
We had to take mom to the doctor every month to get the tracheostomy tube replaced. She had to be put in an ambulance with life support and taken to PSRI hospital where it was done. Once we got a special tube that came with a speaking valve. Using this mom could say a few words at a time. The voice that came out was not the exact one but it was nice to see her speak even a little. She was in recovery mode and doing great but then winter arrived in Delhi NCR. COPD patients always have issues with cold weather. The oxygen requirement went up and walking around the house came to a complete standstill. I arranged for a physiotherapist who would make her do the exercises in the bed itself. This helped keep her limbs and chest muscles in good condition.
At the end of November, we got a piece of very good news that Vishal is getting engaged. It happened on 27th November and we all were part of it. Coincidently, her to-be wife's name was Shalini Sharma and she was a health worker at a Delhi government hospital just like my wife. We tripped multiple times on this thinking that women named "Shalini" are a blessing in our lives and that they change our life for the better.
December started off well and then came our anniversary date. We could not plan anything on that day as we could not leave our parents at home alone. At midnight I gave her the gift I bought for her (iPhone 14). She went crazy after that. The next day in the morning we went to Chattarpur temple for blessings and in the evening her sisters came to Gurgaon and we went to Cafe Aurika in DLF phase 4 for dinner. The rest of December was not noisy. During Christmas time, Sonu prepared a plan to meet up at Connaught Place with us and Vishal and it was just amazing. Really thank Sonu for putting up such a plan.
January was a very good month. A lot of memorable events happened this month. One of those events was Shalini's maternity shoot taken care of by Seema and Anurag on 8th Jan. They did a brilliant job of clicking the pictures with the gorgeous backdrops in Lodhi Garden. I met Rahul at the IGI airport on 13th April since he was traveling from Dubai to India after a vacation with his friends. On 20th Jan, I attended E&IT day in the office and in the evening we all went to Ambience Mall to celebrate Ayush's birthday. On 22nd Jan, Shanno planned Baby Shower on the third floor at our Gurgaon home. I planned the lunch from 'Biriyani Blues'. Also on 28th Jan, Vishal and Shalini got married. I, Sonu, Ankit and Ashish had great fun.
Good news on the way in February. Let's meet in the next blog.
Find a good example(s) of Main Street in your neighborhood or hometown. Explain their conditions (in terms of building use/diversity, social life, and pedestrian quality)
Westerville (Kayla)
State Street in Westerville, specifically in the Uptown area, would be a good example of a Main Street in my hometown. Uptown Westerville is the “historical” area as well as the downtown area. I would classify the street between Walnut St and Home St would be the best example of a Main Street in Westerville. It has many locally owned stores and restaurants as well as a few chains. However, the locally owned stores far outweigh the number of chain establishments. There are wide sidewalks as well as outdoor seating and frequent crosswalks. The crosswalks often are a different material than the rest of the road, which also narrows in the described area to promote safer driving and a safer pedestrian experience while crossing the road. This provides a positive experience for pedestrians, especially during Fourth Friday celebrations where large portions of the street are pedestrianized and both food and goods vendors alongside performers come out to celebrate. There is housing above the shops along State St as well as housing in the intersecting streets. This adjacent housing does come mostly from houses; however they are small and densely built, providing human scale density. The area also has many parks nearby and green spaces along the street. A photo of a portion of the sidewalk along the street can be seen below. It depicts the positive pedestrian experience described prior. Also below is a picture from Google Street View depicting an intersection with locally owned businesses on the corners.
Tumblr media
Liberty Twp/ West Chester (jaclyn) I’m from Liberty Twp/ West Chester, Ohio. Unfortunately, this area is very suburban and doesn’t actually have any sort of Main Street within it. There’s plenty of business districts and plenty of housing, but almost no mixed-use development or even multi-family homes. As seen by this zoning map of Liberty Twp, there literally isn’t a single parcel of residential that’s not single family. The closest thing we have to a main street would be The Streets of West Chester, which has housing developments near it (on the other side of I-75), but not directly by it. Liberty Center could also be a better example, but that is a lifestyle center/ mall, therefore it wouldn’t count as a Main Street. There also aren’t really any historical areas of Liberty Twp or West Chester.
Tumblr media
Because of the lack of Main Streets and historical districts, Liberty Twp and West Chester are entirely car-oriented with practically no public transportation. Growing up, my only form of “public” transportation was the school bus to get to and from school. West Chester has multiple very large business districts, but you quite literally have to take a car to get there. Even though some areas having housing developments nearby, the roads are very large, high speed, and always busy, making pedestrians feel unsafe walking along them.
Deli Twp (Sam)
I grew up in Delhi Township, Ohio; and unfortunately, the township does not have a very appealing ‘main street’. However, while it’s a real piece of work, every Delhi resident would unanimously say that Delhi Pike is the main drag of the township; specifically, the section between Anderson Ferry Rd. and Greenwell Ave. In this stretch of road, every single plot of land is a business. Most of the buildings are single-floor strip malls, set several yards away from the street front. Other businesses are in purpose-built buildings, also surrounded by seas of tarmac. If you look and see a few single-family homes on the street and think that maybe commercial and residential coexist on this street, think again; all those houses have been converted into insurance agencies and dental practices. In terms of diversity, there really isn’t any. Of the 19 restaurants that call ‘The Pike’ home, only two of them are locally owned businesses. And of those two, only one of them will give you a truly healthy food option. The rest are all fast-food or other chain eateries. In terms of The Pike’s social life; I’d say it’s complicated. Because from an urban design-only standpoint; yes, its social life is abysmal. It is an ugly stroad that necessitates the need for an automobile and there are no natural spaces in the streetscape that facilitate natural human interaction, like how a good main street would. But as a person on the ground, you would see that inside these businesses, social interaction does in fact occur. But really that’s due to Delhi Township’s (and more broadly, the West Side’s) insular nature more than it is a credit to the street’s design. Like, yes, I will probably see ten people I know inside of the Kroger or the Skyline, and my dad might know the guy running the liquor store counter; but that is absolutely in no part because of the street. So yes, while the social life is there, do not get it twisted; the street is awful. Which brings me to the last point: the pedestrian experience. Yeah, it’s not good. You walk along a noisy 60ft wide street, with driveways to businesses all along the way, with cars turning in and out of them without even thinking about looking for a person on the sidewalk. The crosswalks are very spread out; you’ll get to one after walking three football fields in length usually. It’s also a heat island, with absolutely no trees in sight. Man, does Delhi Pike have anything going for it? Well, there is one thing. On the site of a now-torn down strip mall, construction is underway for a new mixed-use community center. That’s right; actual humans living on Delhi Pike. It’ll also be the first market-rate apartment complex built in the township in 40 years. The complex is seemingly a jack of all trades, being home to 180 housing units, as well as a recreational center, government office space, a cultural center, pre-K classrooms and even an outdoor event space. Time will tell if the space can really achieve all its aiming to be. While there are some features of the complex, I’m not so hot on, (why does it have to be so far from the road?!! It’s barely a part of the fabric of the street!!) I am happy to see at least some positive development happening on this road I have begrudgingly called home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BondHill (Brooke)
A good example of a Main Street in my hometown/neighborhood would be California Avenue. The street stretches been Paddock and Reading rd. I chose reading road because it has Main Street potential. Automobile drivers tend to take California when navigating to or from one of the main roads such as paddock or reading causing it to have a constant traffic flow through all periods of the day. There are only a handful of businesses such a convenience store, daycare, barbershop, apparel, bar, café and restaurant. There are a total of 5 churches on the 7-block avenue; 3 Christian, 1 Catholic and 1 Hebrew Israelite “house.” There is an elementary school “Bond Hill Academy School” located towards the south end of the avenue. The rest of the road mainly consist of single-family homes with a handful of apartments.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
California Ave has been in the same condition since I was a kid business wise. I feel like less pedestrians walk nor take strolls because of crime. Kids don’t come outside to play as much and technology can be the blame for that. Now that I am an adult, driving up or down California Ave feel likes I riding through a ghost town most days. California Ave isn’t very diverse. Bonhill’s population is predominantly black therefore California Ave follows suite. There are many social places but there is a social event held once a year by the Church of the Resurrection Catholic church and they allow Jazz singers and musicians to play on the front lawn. The buildings are mixed used as there are retail shops, businesses, a school, churches, single family homes and apartments.
Anderson (Johnny)
The main street in my hometown is Beechmont avenue it is 4 lanes wide with a turn lane the whole way. The road only has sidewalks on some portions and a painted bike line that is rarely used due to how dangerous it is. Beechmont has a great variety of businesses along it but almost all have their own parking with a direct connection to Beechmont Avenue.
Tumblr media
While some developments are planned along Beechmont such as a multi-story apartment complex they will not have any good walking or biking connections for Beechmont to become an appealing main street it would have to reinvent itself by adding sidewalks all along the street adding bollards to protect the bike lane and reduce the number of driveways that are on the street.
