I may or may not have the urge to make Ego-inspired Barbie design mockups. Like not the Egos 1:1 made into dolls (though I do plan on making a proper Mark repaint IRL), more like the Star Wars Barbie collection from a couple years ago. Barbies dressed in Ego-flavored fashion, if you will. Like I wanna pick out specific head sculpts and body types and everything.

Merliah dump lol

This is such a random-ass fixation but here we go lol While I was looking for older Mattel Ariel dolls for my collection on Facebook marketplace a few months back, I somehow managed to stumble across a used Mermaid Tale 2 Mini Merliah doll-one of my most random doll grails- for the very very low price of 5$ which began a renewed interest in Barbie in a Mermaid Tale dolls lol

I've always been a huge fan of the Mini Kingdom line but dissatisfied with the body they used (and the massive balloon hobbit-era head sculpt they switched to in 2008-ish), so I was pretty excited when the Mermaid Tale 2 mini dolls came out with not only a teeny tiny Belly Button body, but also a new miniaturized GG head sculpt! Sadly they were Wal-mart exclusive dolls and were sold in very limited quantities so I never had a chance to get them when they came out, and they have been nearly impossible to find secondhand since then so I have been searching for them for years to no avail lol

(photos from google, pls let me know if they belong to you) this is also my obligatory plea for anyone to let me know if they have these for sale or find them anywhere because I still desperately want the Kylie doll and an NIB set of both lol After getting the mini doll, I thought it would be a good time to repurchase the deluxe Transforming Merliah doll I had when I was a teenager- one of my favorite dolls back in the OG doll Flickr days! I've always loved her face and the general aesthetic of the line (but not necessarily the construction..we'll get to that later) so she's always been a favorite of mine.

At first I decided to just get my hands on a singular used Merliah doll to reroot and a collection of all of her outfits from previous movies, but upon her arrival I was pretty shocked to open up the padded envelope and discover a completely squishy head with no glue!

(I also rooted extra hair into her head for thickness but that's beside the point lol) Turns out the earliest batches of the original Merliah doll (Including international versions) are glue-free, while later ones have gluehead. This is probably a result of Mattel not fully integrating the glue-head method for every single doll until about the middle of Monster High's original run, which is why certain batches of Mattel dolls from between 2008-2012 still have squishy heads despite glue head already being a thing. At this point I decided to start hunting for more glue-free Merliah dolls (going by vibes and prayers alone to figure out which ones had no glue) one for each outfit. Next up was an NIB Merliah that came in the international package (luckily also with no glue, especially because I paid an egregious amount of money to get her NRFB):

I also started working on a set of two Merliah mermaid dolls, using multiple parts combined together and a set of rerooted Merliah dolls with solid pink streaks (instead of the color change ones that she comes with). The original deluxe Merliah dolls are pretty infamous for having some of the worst looking tail construction, so if I wanted a set of good mermaid dolls I would have to get creative lol

(Mermaid Tale 1's tail turns into a beach coverup and MT2's tail turns into a literal surfboard...bye) They also made a set of 'budget' mermaid dolls with more traditional fabric tails, which serve as the primary base parts for my versions:

MUCH nicer tails, but their fins are really dinky and flimsy and they could both use some more details, and the dolls are ofc way too basic lol

Mermaid Tale 2 Merliah was the first to get going because I found the pieces I needed at a lower price than the ones I need for the original Merliah, but she's also still unfinished while I wait for her rerooted head to come lol First I made a mockup, using the budget tail with the deluxe doll fin just to make sure the parts would fit together :

Then my finished tail, with some added detail around the fin to look a bit more deluxe lol:

And very headless (for now) I also switched out her legs with the standard hollow plastic beach feet legs that the budget Merliah dolls have, because I hate the legs she came with lol Original Merliah is definitely my favorite though, and the one who cost the most for me to put together (and also got the most love lol) and also got finished the soonest. My mockup for her:

Originally I planned to add a Fountain Mermaid Barbie fin to her tail in order to make it larger, but eventually decided on Secret Door Romy's fins for the bottom layer instead, because they look more cohesive to the rest of her tail/fin and look more 'official' instead of looking like...well a 1993 tail slapped on a 2009 doll lol Ofc she needed a reroot to start with (commissioned from 292millimeters on Instagram!):

And then I (very reluctantly, because it was like 80$ lol) purchased the budget mermaid Merliah doll, a used Secret Door Romy outfit for the fabric fins and a bag of fuschia hotfix gemstones and put her together!

I also switched the tiaras between the Original and MT2 doll because the pink tiara matches her better, and I think it makes more sense for the original mermaid form to be more muted and for the "upgraded" sequel form to be more colorful. The extra fin on the bottom really gives the tail that little bit of extra length it needed to look like an actual, legitimate Deluxe Merliah doll tail imo, as does the longer hair and the gem on her top! And if you don't think this is a vast improvement from the original Deluxe doll's outfit....well

It was lowkey a little painful to put my stock Merliah back into her mermaid form for this comparison but it had to be done, it's just so ugly!!! This was a really random project resulting from a very spur of the moment purchase of a 5$ doll, but I really love these dolls and this line, and it felt good to fulfill the wishes of 15-year old me-and all of the other collectors on Flickr bitd who were absolutely livid about Merliah's original tail being so incredibly bad lol I've been having a lot of fun with these "what if" projects I've been doing recently, it's only further proven to me that I am a much happier collector when I actually take my own time working on whatever interests me in that moment and put everything I have into fully realizing my vision to the smallest detail (even if it's for something as niche as this, and even if it costs more money than it should) instead of putting so much emphasis on dealing with the hell that is trying to keep up with and purchase every new doll, even at the expensive of my financial and mental health and even if it personally does absolutely nothing to enrich my collection or my creativity to be constantly worried about missing out on whatever new RH doll is out lol

Making these turntables was pretty fun! I had a lot of these pink keyboard stands left over as a byproduct of acquiring other costume and prop elements. I designed the wood pieces in several layers to add a little bit of dimensionality, but then just pasted on photos of actual DJ equipment to give it that same feel that a lot of barbie accessories have, of monochrome injection molded parts with stickers to give them color.

I included a snapshot of what my canvas looks like when designing something like this. I start off with reference shots (at left), then make a scale color mockup of the parts, viewed from at least 3 sides with details as needed. Then I copy over the top view of the shapes and separate the layers, then rearrange for cutting. That last grouping on the right is the printable elements. I start with the images in the mockup and then (when I remember to do it), add cutting guidelines and bleed (extra color beyond the cutting lines).

Doll posting under the cut (I do seem to always finish my faceups at like 3 am but 👍)

This was my first time doing an anime faceup and it was um. So so scary 👍 all I knew going in is I wanted to use a lot of orange tones since she has an orange wig :)

^ the faceup before :) my mom did it for me since my hands r 1 million percent shaky and it's a good faceup but I wanted smth a bit more polished! The watercolor pencils with the eyebrows just weren't as smooth of lines as I wanted so I got to work :)

^ the faceup mockup kind of came across more Halloweeny than I think I wanted with how dark the brows and freckles were so I'm glad I made the changes I did :)

Most of the work was with acrylics which was honestly very scary! I really didn't know how well it would work to do the lashes and putting the brows in acrylic was a last minute decision and frankly one I'm glad I made! The freckles were also a challenge as trying to replicate a more anime style of doing them versus realistic (like what I did with Cordula's freckles) is something I've never done before. I'm honestly really happy w how it turned out and using the new sealant method went better this time (almost like not having to coat your head in acrylic paint before sealing helps or smth 🙄) and I barely had any dust or fuzzies trapped between the layers (although it surely helped to do way less layers of sealant than the last one, due to how I chose to do the layers). Next up is um. A head smaller than a Barbie doll so I'm going to have a scary time 👍

Wanna see some Toy Custom Project concept stuff?? While I struggle with my Rainbow High Sona, I finally picked a color scheme I’m excited about, I got started on making my partner’s! We decided to make him a girl doll originally because there wasn’t a boy doll in his skin tone but also because the boy RH dolls just...I’m not the biggest fan. Her base is Sunny and her eyes are from Karma! This is Lexi Torrent! A Pacific Coast High Student! (We thought that school would fit the aesthetic best!) Anyway we’ve been making mock ups for awhile now. He loves the vaporwave aesthetic and we tried to use that. It worked well because I already owned almost all the materials!

The silver looking one is actually holographic it just didn’t show up when I took a picture of it! The pink mermaid scales are actually iridescent too! The shoes will be repainted Karma Nichols shoes, the mesh pants are from a cheerleading Jade doll I got on super sale awhile back, I have all the yarn colors for the hair from previous purchases, and the buckle came from one of Karma’s outfits as well! The glasses are going to be made from doll packaging plastic tinted with this tint spray I own from when I was in college, rhinestones and paperclips! Her hair is supposed to be that sort of festival bubble braid style? I didn’t draw it very well in the mockup XD. She’ll have more braids and bubbles too! The only things missing are: -Heat transfer vinyl for the Rainbow on the Tassels -Satin ribbon for said Tassels -Earring design (I’m thinking of getting those mini barbie from the dollar store and cutting them into busts and then painting them white to create sort of greek statue bust earrings? -Stuff to make a little gameboy looking Ita bag because Pacific Coast high students all got bag accessories! Maybe I’ll figure out a towel too? Or something else beachy! -Also might try to hand paint the design on the shorts or look into printable fabric iron on vinyl! Haven’t decided!

Haven’t quite figured out the makeup? I just love love love black lipstick! I considered giving her silver eyelashes but it didn’t look good in the mockup XP.

The season finale helpfully opens with a full inventory of ongoing plot-lines. They are: Heather's Bad Mormon book and misfit choir, the @shahexposed Instagram account, Jen being insane in San Diego, Heather's Black Eye, Jen's fraud trial.

We've had a very Heather-Jen season, unfortunately for us.

In the opening, Jen's tagline has reverted from "The only thing I'm guilty of is being Shah-mazing!" to "I'm fighting for my life, not your approval," presumably after United States government quoted the former to demonstrate Jen's flippancy about her case. It appears she's finally taking things seriously, only she's a minute late and 16 million dollars short: Last week, she was Jentenced to six and a half years in prizzy.

I sincerely hope that is the last we see of her for some time. Of course, it isn't, because we still gotta watch the finale together (and then the reunion which I am excited about.) Onward!

It's not Heather's book launch party, but Heather's book cover reveal party — OK? The title of the book, Bad Mormon, will be frosted on the windows, and the Salt Lake City skyline will glitter above steam rising off the heated pool. I think the title is. great.

The other ladies and their husbands prepare for the event, which is apparently later that day.

Wait... maybe it's starting immediately? The next scene is Heather, the Bottega Cuntessa, strutting back into the space after a costume change. I was physically unable to suppress the "YAS" that escaped from my throat!

Heather is hoping for no drama. But she says if there is drama, she hopes it will occur in front of her Bad Mormon cover mockup, because she is a PR maven!

Not sure if it's 6 PM or 11 AM, but everybody is now rolling up to the function. Lisa greets Heather warmly and notes that her eye is almost completely healed. "Just like the memory of it, I hope," Heather jokes.

"The memory is never going away, Heather," Lisa not-jokes.

"I wanted it to not be an issue, and now it's the only issue," Heather straight up lies.

Enter Whitney, also wearing a skin-tight black dress. Her and Heather embrace, and all seems briefly well. We also see Bad Angie arrive. And Good Angie, whose entire personality is Greek-American, tells Whitney and Lisa that, in honor of Greek Easter, she is going to confront Jen about some off-camera comments later on.

(If Good Angie isn't lying to seem more Greek, the date must be April 24th, 2022; a week after non-Greek Easter and three months prior to Jen's guilty plea.)

Allegedly, Jen told a man (gay?) (I guess it doesn't matter) that Good Angie was the one who punched Heather. "That's ludicrous," Whitney says. Up until this moment, Jen has conducted herself with the integrity of a house of cards, and the odds are high that this was either a reckless act of comedy — similar to her hilarious bit where she pours champagne on her friends' freshly-pressed hair — or an outright lie. Still, viewers of the show are forced to consider the possibility that Good Angie did whoop Heather in the night, and the idea is shocking. But not quite so shocking as the idea of Jen telling the truth for once in her life! This particular case is not yet closed.

It gets better. Angie ups the ante by suggesting Jen punched Heather after they had sex.

Crucially, Angie does not say they had sex. She says they were doing "Barbie scissor kicks."

Actually she does then immediately say she thinks they "had a sexual relationship, romping and bumping, and giving each other a black eye because somebody wasn't very good in bed in the end, who knows."

Whitney's reactions are truly perfect.

Lisa makes a vaguely homophobic comment about not understanding how scissoring works. Lisa... I'm not mad, but I'm not happy!

Good Angie does a little demonstration with her hands, and it's unfortunately audible:

And then Jen walks in!

Immediately Jen and Coach Shah approach Bad Angie and her fat fucking elf on the shelf husband. Aside, Coach Shah asks for an honorable apology from the man who created the @shahexposed finsta. Angie's husband says a couple words — no more than five — before descending into a very soft sob. What an utterly bizarre reaction! Bad Angie takes the wheel.

"It wasn't personal!" Whatever. It all becomes water under the heated pool.

It's time for the choir to perform — all of the ladies participate with the notable exceptions of Whitney and Meredith, who cling to their husbands in the crowd. The song is "Amazing Grace," and it soon becomes clear that the rehearsal we saw but a few episodes ago was in fact the only rehearsal conducted. (Certainly you remember: Heather in the green vest? The Tom of Finlandesque choir director? Lisa asked Heather "Am I your friend?" and Heather said "Is that important to you?")

Clap clap clap clap. Heather takes the mic for her solo and takes her place beside the cover mockup, pre-reveal. She gives a speech about being a good friend — a ride-or-die, even. Interesting, seeing as her book isn't about friendship? Not even the choir is not about friendship, as more than half of it is comprised by musical theatre majors she imported from local universities?

Then she reveals the cover for Bad Mormon. In their confessionals, Good Angie and Lisa issue snarky remarks on the "book cover reveal party" conceit, calling it hollow, where's the actual book?, etc. They don't understand: It's all about the pre-sales, baby. (The book comes out Feb 7 — it's perfect promo!)

When the party continues, Whitney wants to speak with Jen. Not to smooth things over, exactly, but to get an explanation for her recent behavior. This is a popular social miscalculation: The idea that "talking things out" equals communicating effectively, or usually results in some form of understanding. Whitney wants a coherent, nuanced admission of wrongdoing from Jen, something Jen has shown both on-camera and in a court of law that she is unable to produce.

Bad weather. Heather is off-camera somewhere else, but the rest of the housewives seem to gather around Whitney and Jen like a storm. The conflict begins to escalate as Angie begins to thunder with her own anti-Jen talking points, overtaking Whitney completely.

Angie accuses her of spreading the "Angie-punched-Heather" rumor, which Jen categorically denies.

She desperately calls out for her husband to come to her side. Good Angie goes in a very bad direction and begins questioning whether or not Jen survived a suicide attempt. Jen goes ballistic and walks off. Coach Shah assures Angie it was very real.

Jen is all "get the cameras out of my face!" and needs to cool down. Heather takes Greek Angie aside and asks her what her aim is with Jen, which Angie cannot communicate; it seems like she just wanted to lash out at her?

Jen decides to leave. Good idea! Meredith guides her out with the trademark sisterly warmth that has become her custom:

It's clean-up time; we see empty champagne glasses and Heather bidding farewell to guests. And then... what's this?... the episode seems to end, with each housewife getting their little postscript placard. (None of them are good but I'm obsessed with the first half of Meredith's.)

Of course, one housewife is missing from this montage. The screen goes black, and three words sear into view.

THREE MONTHS LATER.

It's a clear, July day in Salt Lake City. Jen and her mother are enjoying the weather on Jen's front porch. Soon she'll go to New York for her trial, which is in a few days. "When I come back, I'll be guilty or innocent," she says wistfully. Her mom says, "You'll be innocent. Right?"

Both start to cry.

A spooky montage plays. We see that day at Beauty Lab and Laser, in the hours before Jen's arrest; we see her asserting her innocence at a restaurant; we see Andy Cohen at the reunion mentioning the New York District Attorney's 95% conviction rate, and Jen's response, "Because people take plea deals,"; we see her "I'M INNOCENT!!!!!!!!!!!" outside the choir auditions.

For those who are wondering how the cinematographers at Bravo decided to frame the final shots of this sequence, when Jen arrives in New York to enter a guilty plea, wonder no more:

"Facing her future." !!

After a commercial break, we're back. My heart is racing. There are 20 minutes left in the episode, and all of them appear to be devoted to the events immediately pre- and post-guilty plea.

Heather and Meredith are revealed to be with Jen for her trial. After privately expressing their worry, they go to Jen's suite, which is the size of Versailles. All of the women are wearing Brooks Marks tracksuits.

In the blonde living room, the Shahs and friends have a solemn but supportive conversation.

The next day (?) Meredith and her husband dine with Heather. (The camera works very hard to make it seem as though they are at a chic riverside bistro, but they are eating at the Brookfield Place mall downtown, by the marina, in case you care.)

They discuss the gravity of the case, before discussing the case itself. Meredith was a lawyer, remember? (I don't know what her husband does but I think it's commerce related??) She points out the case isn't about the scheme itself, which we know happened, but about Jen's knowledge and involvement in it.

Meredith's husband asks: What if guilty?

Meredith says it would be a "huge problem" if she was proclaiming her innocence but turned out to be guilty.

Heather doesn't really answer. She makes a comment about how nice the weather is, and contrasts it with the grave circumstances of their being there to enjoy it. More like Bad Metaphor... am I right, ladies?

Pajama party in Jen's room! Heather brought Sour Patch Kids. Jen continues to maintain her innocence. Talk about ride or die! She brings up her former assistant Stuart, who was also implicated in the scheme but plead guilty early on. Jen seems to suggest that he played her, the unwitting boss. In her confessional, Heather seems to suggest that this was a bridge too far. Blaming Stuart? Something's not right...

Very intuitive, Heather.

The two people I want to discuss this matter most meet to discuss this matter.

Heather has returned from New York mere seconds ago. She is reeling. So is Lisa. Both are horrified, astonished, grieving, angry, heartbroken. The most galling thing, according to Heather? She claimed innocence because she thought she could get away with it.

She goes a few steps further by invoking Coach Shah. "If my husband knew about it and was involved..." she says. "'I'll take care of the boys, see you in 15 years,'? That to me is a whole other tragedy."

That's all, folks. I'm looking forward to the upcoming reunion episodes, and am trying to think of different formats for covering them in a way that'll be fresh and funny. As always, if you made it this far, thank you for reading. –BK

Discussion question: When Whitney said that "they say every woman is three shots away from being a lesbian," did you think it was a little homophobic? The more I think about it, the more I don't think so — more of a comment on how inebriation can often lead to sexual experimentation. Then again, maybe it was homophobic of me to assume that Jen was speaking to a gay man earlier, even though I know in my heart she probably was. Also, who is the most homophobic SLC housewife? I believe I know the answer but I fear to utter it aloud.

a consultation example:

I had a request to swatch Snow White in “nearer to black with blue or berry tint” so I tranlated that to what sarans I had on hand

The next mockup to come through was this neon effect from a comic book character and I translated that into two sarans which have a human pale blue green effect and two ways of getting a comic book-like vibrancy: glow in the dark matte and juxtaposing neon on dark.

The next request won’t be possible with saran, as much as i’ve worked with gradients. What the comic character is intending to convey is a matte bleached then coloured hair in layers of growth and bleaching like Rowan Ellis’ hair https://www.instagram.com/p/CaK5tN-L8iN/ and I can’t do that with shiny synthetic hair at doll scale, we need to go towards yarn or natural fibres that are then dyed with some of the fibre pulled out earlier to be lighter at the front and sides where there’s more bleach on a human and honestly, that’s not my domain. I’ve only just begun experimenting with dye and Amee has been a journey to say the least. In a year’s time, I might be proficient in dying nylon! Right now, I have to scrubbed a shared sink in a tiny bathroom where a lost droplet could potentially ruin someone’s clothes LMAO.

What I can potentially do and what I can concretely and expertly do right now are two different things. And entirely different levels of stress if it’s a bait barbie like Amee or someone else’s doll.

A few years ago, I got several requests for a half black / half rainbow dye job that was very popular on instagram. When I explained that i’d have to purchase 8 different colours, they didn’t understand, in 2022 now I have Rainbow High Jett that I can point to. I offered to do the reroot if they could find matching fibres in black and dyed rainbow that wouldn’t stain. Turns out that’s not cheap or easy at doll scale either.

Part of the process of being a customizer is saying No or That’s not yet in my skillset and it’s the part I find the hardest.

[Like a week and a half ago I said] I wanted to try making a mockup of a Barbie inspired by an Ego. It's not so much Barbie just dressed 1-to-1 like a character, it's more akin to [the 2020 Star Wars Barbies] that are more like runway looks. Of course I had to kick it off with Dark, because who would I be if I didn't lol

Just like I planned, I used the Claudette headsculpt, and it worked out in my favor. I like to make Dark look like a fusion of Mark and Pam when I can, and I knew the perfect head that would do Pam's cheekbones justice

To that end, I did a facemorph of Pam and Mark yet again to get the eye shape I used... and then I covered it in eyeliner lol

I briefly considered giving her lip a pearly finish, but I wanted the main focus of her face to be her eyes so I left the lips matte

Also she's on a "Tall" Fashionistas body. I'm not sorry, I'm on team Dark Is Tall, burn me at the stake about it idc /j /lh

Drop-earrings because they're my shit

Double-breasted blazer because they're also my shit

idk if you can see it if you zoom in, but her shirt collar has a lace trim

I'm....... really pleased with how she came out, honestly. I may need to make her IRL in the future 🖤
