I’m still alive!
Hey everyone. Just checking in to let you all know that I’m alive and well but life has just been AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! lately. 😂
After almost being roasted alive this last summer and each summer for the last few years just continually getting worse and worse (what climate change?) my husband and I have finally decided to move back home to the HIGH desert, rather than the LOW desert where we currently live. Huge, huge difference in summer temps, even when it’s not that significant a difference on paper, because 108F/42.2C is a hell of a lot better than 118F/47.7C, plus it cools off at night there because of the high elevation and cool mountain winds. It’s one of those deserts where as soon as the sun drops, the temperature drops along with it. Not here, where we just simmer in a bowl all night long. I’m tired of the nighttime LOW being in the low 90sF/32.2-33.8C.
Ugh.
Not to mention it’s like the never ending summer every year, still hot as balls well into the first half of October, at least. It only just now FINALLY feels like autumn here, whereas up in the high desert it cools off seasonally a lot sooner. And they have proper winters there. I miss the winter.
🎵I miss the winter. A world of fragile things. Look for me in the white forest, hiding in a hollow tree. (Come and find me.)🎵
Here in southern California’s low desert we only sort of have summer and not-summer. There’s an autumn/spring blend where it’s blessedly cool enough to wear sweaters/jumpers without roasting to death, and then far too soon it starts to warm back up again. In February we’re already saying with foreboding “Summer is coming.” But I was willing to put up with it if he was, but my husband is actually a lot more heat sensitive than I am and was genuinely ill multiple times this last summer. With the drastic increase in humidity lately the evaporative cooler also no longer works well, either, so we’d be holed up in the bedroom with the small a/c going while even the kitchen and living room inside our own house was like 90F/32.2C, while the outside temps were over 120F/48.8C.
So we decided we had to get the fuck out, and now for the REALLY good news! My wonderful, loving, absolutely has always been there for us mother, and her current husband, have invited us to come move in with them. Rent. Free. They’re elderly, he’s sickly, it’s a HUGE 4bd house she’s been struggling to take care of all by her lonesome, so we’re going to earn our keep by taking over the basic normal day-to-day household chores (not even like cooking because she loves to cook but I just mean like cleaning, and taking care of weeds in the yard, etc.) and also we won’t be a burden on them financially because we’ll be selling our current home and so will have money in the bank (it’s just a mobile home so it’s not like we’ll be rolling in dough but at least it’s something), plus we’re still going to work a little bit to earn enough money to pay our few remaining bills like car insurance and cellphones, and buy our own food, etc. My husband is a self-employed housekeeper (I made him business cards that say Man Maid, hahaha) and he’s going to keep a handful of his best clients that really don’t want to see him go, and we’ll commute out here bi-weekly since it’s only a two-hour drive, and I will be helping him so he’s not killing himself doing it all by himself anymore.
I GET TO QUIT MY RETAIL JOB!!! I’m so excited! Hashtag Living The Dream. We’re going to be semi-retired and only working a couple days every two weeks and the rest of the time, guess what? I WILL FINALLY GET TO WORK ON ALL MY WRITING (and reading) THAT I HAVEN’T HAD THE TIME FOR.
*happy dance*
So yeah, everyone just hang in there, and I hope to soon be a MUCH bigger presence in the fandom again. Our house goes on the market in only a few days. We busted our asses this last month to get it presentable, LOL. I didn’t even really get to enjoy Spooky Season because I was too busy with cleaning the house and packing on my days off, but that’s okay because it’s not like we would’ve gone to go do anything, anyway, since there’s still a fucking plague.

Michelle: It’s not so hard when you think about it. If it weren’t for this place, I never would have met you.

Ten Extraordinary Things about Kroger
Kroger is presently greater and more productive than such retail legends as Target (NYSE: TGT) and Sears (NYSE: SHLD), which possesses Kmart and Walgreen (NASDAQ: WBA). On Jan. 31, 2015, Kroger revealed incomes of $108.47 billion; around the same time Target detailed incomes of $72.62 billion, and Sears announced incomes of $32.2 billion while Walgreen revealed incomes of $77.52 billion on Nov. 30, 2014. Truth be told, just three American retailers accomplish more business than Kroger: Walmart, which revealed incomes of $485.65 billion on Jan. 31, 2015; Costco, which announced incomes of $115.64 billion on Feb. 28, 2015 and drugstore administrator CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), which detailed incomes of $139.37 billion on Dec. 31, 2014. CVS's incomes are so immense on the grounds that it has an enormous solution handling business notwithstanding its drugstores. Truly intriguing that Kroger continues getting greater; its income developed by almost 10% (8.55% to be careful) during 2014. Interestingly, Walmart's income developed by only 1.43% during a similar period and Costco's by 4.36%.
Kroger now works 3,727 stores that utilize around 375,000 individuals in 37 states. Those stores incorporate 2,619 general stores, 782 comfort stores and 326 adornments stores.[1] Kroger likewise works 37 sustenance preparing and assembling plants and 36 circulation focuses to supply those stores with items. Each one of those areas give Kroger 161.7 million square feet of retail space. That is what could be compared to around 280,000 NFL guideline football fields.[2] The workforce in those stores is presently so huge that Kroger needs 300 distinctive association understandings to keep up work harmony. Around 94% of Kroger's business originates from sustenance. The rest originates from medicines, gems and fuel deals.
Kroger is presently the country's third biggest administrator of filling stations in the United States. As of September 18, 2014, Kroger worked more than 2,000 filling stations in 37 states. Those stations included 1,330 grocery store fuel focuses and 725 comfort stores.[4] Convenience stores worked by Kroger incorporate Loaf N' Jug, Kwik Stop, TomThumb, Quick Stop and Turkey Hill. Truly fascinating that Kroger has just been selling gas since 1983 and just offering fuel at its general stores since 1998. However an ongoing Market Service overview found that Kroger is presently America's preferred gas retailer. Kroger sold $19 billion worth of fuel in 2013.[5] One purpose behind this is the organization's massively famous dependability card program, which gives clients a chance to spare 10¢ a gallon on gas for each 100 points they procure on the card. A client procures one point for each $1 in food supplies in buys at a Kroger general store.
Kroger works 25 diverse grocery store chains in various pieces of the nation, including: Ralph's (California), Harris Teeter (North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, Florida, Georgia and Washington, DC), Smith's (Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming), King Soopers (Colorado and Wyoming), Scott's Food and Pharmacy (Indiana),[6] Fred Meyer (Pacific Northwest and Alaska),[7] City Market (Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming), Fry's Food and Drug (Arizona), Bakers' (Nebraska), Food 4 Less (California, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, and Nebraska), Owens (Indiana), Dillons (Kansas and Missouri), Foods Co (California), Gerbes (Missouri), Price Rite (New Mexico), JayC Food Stores (Indiana), Pay Less Super Markets (Indiana), QFC Quality Food Centers (Oregon and Washington State), and Kroger (Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia, Texas, Virginia, Michigan and Florida).[8] That implies Kroger may work in your neighborhood or town, and you probably won't know it.
Staple goods are by all account not the only things you can purchase at Kroger stores. The Fred Meyer[10] and Kroger Marketplace[11], Dillons Marketplace, Fry's Marketplace, Smith's Marketplace and King Soopers Marketplace[12] stores sell gadgets, adornments, furniture, , office furniture, attire, equipment, paint, garden things, office supplies, little apparatuses and toys, among different things. That implies Kroger is one of only a handful couple of spots where you can purchase a TV set, a wedding band, a head of lettuce, a wedding cake and a gallon of milk around the same time. Brands sold at Fred Meyer incorporate Sony, Nike, Kitchen Aid, Adidas, Nikon, Dockers and Apple.[13] At the Kroger Marketplace, you can likewise buy gourmet cheddar and crisp sushi. On the off chance that that isn't sufficient, Kroger additionally works 326 adornments stores under the names Littman Jewelers[14] and Fred Meyer Jewelers.[15] Some of these stores are situated inside markets; others are independent areas in shopping centers. Fred Meyer is currently the country's third biggest chain of gems stores.[16] If you need, you can likewise request fine adornments from both Littman and Fred Meyer on the web. Kroger additionally works its very own remote phone organization, I Wireless.[17]
Kroger is the fifth biggest drugstore administrator in the United States with 1,947 drug stores working in its stores in 2013 and 2,111 drug stores in its stores in 2014. During 2013 Kroger filled 164 million medicines and sold $8.3 billion worth of doctor prescribed drugs.[18] Prescriptions are by all account not the only social insurance administrations you can get at Kroger; its Little Clinic backup worked 110 facilities giving fundamental therapeutic administrations given by attendant professionals and doctors' aides in 2013. Kroger wanted to open 55 all the more new Little Clinics in 2014.[19] That implies you can get a physical or an inoculation at a Kroger's grocery store just as a portion of bread.
To keep its stores provided, Kroger worked an armada of 2,770 semi-tractors and 10,500 semi-trailers in 2013. That armada made 3,300 conveyances every day and drove right around 329 million miles in 2013.[20] Some of those trucks move stock over the United States and even lift a few things up from providers in Canada and Mexico. What's more, Kroger works armadas of littler HomeShop conveyance trucks in certain urban communities that convey food supplies, alcohol and different items legitimately to clients' homes.[21] Customers request the products on the web, and Kroger ships them straightforwardly from the store to the home or business.
Regardless of its size and degree, a standout amongst the most fascinating things is the spots that it doesn't work. There are no Kroger stores in a whole area of the nation—New England—and in two of the country's most crowded states: New York and Pennsylvania. There is only one Kroger store in the country's third most crowded state: Florida. Kroger is additionally missing from a portion of the country's most crowded metropolitan zones, including: New York City, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Milwaukee, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Des Moines, Jacksonville, Madison, Tulsa City, El Paso, San Antonio and Oklahoma City. That implies there is a great deal of space for Kroger just in the United States.
The state with the most Kroger areas is California, where the merchant works 335 stores. The second biggest number of stores is in Ohio, Kroger's home turf, where it works 212 stores. The state with the third biggest number of Kroger's areas is Texas, where there are 203 stores. The state with the least Kroger markets is Florida, which has only one Harris Teeter area. Curiously enough, there is at any rate one state where Kroger has a permit to work together yet no areas—Hawaii. On Feb. 27, 2015, The Pacific Business Journal announced that Kroger had enlisted as another business with the province of Hawaii. The paper likewise detailed that Kroger was searching for a Hawaii area.
Some Kroger stores can be gigantic. The multi-retail establishments that Fred Meyer works in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska can have up to 165,000 square feet of floor space. All that space empowers some Fred Meyer stores to convey in excess of 225,000 items under one roof.[23] Such a store contains a full market, a home improvement shop, a drug store, a shoe store, a dress store, a hardware store, a machine store, a bank and a home and greenhouse focus under one rooftop. Interestingly, the normal Marketplace store has somewhere in the range of 100,000 and 130,000 square feet of room. The normal general store in the United States is around 76,000 square feet in size.

It is simply the nature of the market that the coronavirus pandemic has actually required every fund supervisor and expert to end up being an amateur epidemiologist.
So here are some of the COVID-19 ideas of Christopher Wood, global head of equity strategy at Jefferies. He is in fact motivated by the newest week of coronavirus information that has actually seen cases increase beyond the New york city metropolitan area.
Tumblr media
He notes, for example, the mean age of brand-new positive cases in Florida has actually decreased from 50 in April to 33 in current days, and that, most importantly, deaths are decreasing even as brand-new cases accumulate. Besides the point that new cases are being found more due to the fact that screening has increased, and that more youthful and much healthier individuals are getting the disease, Wood raises the possibility that, like severe intense breathing syndrome, COVID-19 might simply burn itself out as it alters into a less virulent form in time.
” If such is certainly the case, it is exceptionally bullish. Investors must definitely keep an open mind on such a possibility,” Wood says. More good news on the coronavirus front originates from Western Europe, as brand-new cases and deaths, beyond the U.K., are approximately 90%lower eight weeks into reopening.
Tumblr media
Wood advises a barbell technique of owning both development and worth stocks. Growth stocks have actually outshined of late because of second-wave issues, while worth stocks ought to rally when V-shaped healing talk hits the market, he says. A restored relocation in cyclicals must also result in renewed outperformance by Europe and Japan, given the greater cyclical tailoring of their indexes, he adds.
If he’s incorrect about the infection, Wood still does not think widespread shutdowns will result. That point was strengthened by President Donald Trump himself in a tweet, who said the U.S. economy won’t be closed down again.

They say 2020 is most likely to be viewed as secular low for both inflation expectations and bond yields and encourage investor diversification into 25/25/25/25 possession allowance of stocks/bonds/cash/ gold or factor allotment of growth/yield/quality/ inflation before 2021.

“Trump’s Bid to Dismantle Global Trading System Poised for a Win” [Industry Week]. “Thanks to a U.S. veto on new appeals judges, the WTO’s dispute arm is expected to start slipping into the institutional equivalent of a coma at the end of this year. That has set off a scramble by the European Union, Canada and other countries to set up a temporary alternative allowing the use of arbitrators rather than three-judge panels to hear appeals. But by creating that system, WTO members may be giving Trump and aidesーwho, like him, have deep-rooted skepticism of multilateral institutionsーthe very thing they want. Arbitration would above all provide the flexibility the U.S. is after, Vaughn said. It would see disputes treated as individual cases, avoiding the precedent-dependent system the WTO appellate body has become.”
“Inside the lose-lose trade fight between Japan and South Korea” [Nikkei Asian Review]. “[There is a] growing ‘Boycott Japan’ movement spreading across South Korea. South Koreans have also stopped buying cars, beer, cosmetics and just about anything else bearing the label ‘Made in Japan.’ Some are even canceling their summer holidays…. Well-organized protests are not uncommon in South Korea, and they tend to pass relatively quickly. But these boycotts — which in South Koreans’ minds are tied with the emotionally-charged issue of wartime labor and a sense that their most successful companies are under attack — may be different. The movement kicked off shortly after the decision by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s administration on July 4 to tighten controls on exports of three chemicals essential for making semiconductors and flat panel screens used in smartphones and TVs. By choking off supplies of the chemicals — Japan’s market share for two of them stands at more than 90% — the Abe administration was essentially taking aim at the engine that powers South Korea’s high-tech economy.”
“USDA gave almost 100 percent of Trump’s trade war bailout to white farmers” [New Food Economy]. • Deceptive headline erases class: “The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has documented that the program has disproportionately helped wealthy landowners and a recent analysis by Donald Carr, a senior advisor for EWG, argues that the MFP has deepened the disadvantages of black and minority farmers.”
Politics
“But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature?” –James Madison, Federalist 51
“They had one weapon left and both knew it: treachery.” –Frank Herbert, Dune
“2020 Democratic Presidential Nomination” [RealClearPolitics] (average of five polls). As of July 30: Biden continues rise at 32.2% (32.0), Sanders flat at 16.2% (16.2%), Warren up at 14.3% (14.0%), Buttigieg flat at 5.6% (5.5%), Harris up at 10.8% (10.5%), others Brownian motion. Sanders opens a little daylight between him and Warren, for the first time in two weeks.

2020
Sanders (D)(1): “Sanders Calls Out CNN for Airing Pharma Commercials During 2020 Debate” [Truthout]. “Pointing to the PAHCF commercial — which is part of a six-figure ad campaign against Medicare for All — Warren Gunnels, Sanders’s staff director, tweeted, ‘If Medicare for All was on trial, the entire corporate media would have to recuse itself for a y-u-g-e conflict of interest.’”
Williamson (D)(1): “Marianne Williamson isn’t funny. She’s scary.” [Vox]. “In her book A Return to Love, Williamson wrote that “sickness is an illusion and does not exist,” and that “cancer and AIDS and other physical illnesses are physical manifestations of a psychic scream.’”
The Debates
“Only 7 Candidates Have Qualified for the Next Democratic Debate” [New York Times]. “The Democratic National Committee has set stricter criteria for the third set of debates, which will be held on Sept. 12 and Sept. 13 in Houston. If 10 or fewer candidates qualify, the debate will take place on only one night. Candidates will need to have 130,000 unique donors and register at least 2 percent support in four polls. They have until Aug. 28 to reach those benchmarks. These criteria could easily halve the field.” • The seven are: Biden, Booker, Buttigieg, Harris, O’Rourke, Sanders, and Warren. Castro, Klobuchar, and Yang are close.
“Can Someone Please Vote CNN Off the Stage?” [Bloomberg]. “Ten of the Democrats debated on Tuesday night. But the debate was dominated by Jake Tapper, Dana Bash and Don Lemon – CNN’s moderators…. ˛After Tuesday night’s event, I have to believe that there are plenty of people at the Democratic National Committee – and plenty of candidates and their staff – who are fed up with debates that put the TV stars first. I wouldn’t be surprised, especially if things go badly over the rest of the cycle, if both parties start thinking seriously about running their own shows in 2024.” • Yes, it’s always possible to make things worse. Why not go back to the League of Women Voters? The very last thing I want is the DNC exerting even more control over the process, and I would bet there are plenty of voters who think just the same about the RNC.
Obama Legacy
“Obama Presidential Center would have ‘adverse impact’ on historic Jackson Park, federal review concludes” [Chicago Sun-Times (DG)]. “The project would diminish the ‘the historic property’s overall integrity by altering historic, internal spatial divisions that were designed as a single entity’ by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the [Federal Highway Administration] concluded. It also concludes the ‘size and scale of new buildings’ would ‘diminish the intended prominence of the Museum of Science and Industry building and alter the overall composition and design intent of balancing park scenery with specific built areas.’ … The finding puts pressure on the Obama Foundation to find a way to ‘resolve adverse effects’ and turns up the heat on Mayor Lori Lightfoot to order the foundation to make those changes. ‘The Obama Foundation has yet to show any interest in compromising on any of this. It may take [Lightfoot] to bring them to the table,’ said Margaret Schmid, co-president of Jackson Park Watch. ‘It means there are lots of new obstacles facing this proposal. A big question is, does Chicago want to go on record as having allowed a project that has major adverse impacts on this important historic park or can the project be redesigned to be compatible with this historic landscape?’” • A classic permitting battle. Go forth and do likewise with your local fossil fuel infrastruture project!
Stats Watch
Jobless Claims, week of July 27, 2019: “New claims are steady and low and consistent with strong demand for labor” [Econoday]. “This report together with this morning’s Challenger report point to decreasing layoffs and increasing strength for jobs.”
Challenger Job-Cut Report, July 2019: “Increasing strength in the labor market is the indication from Challenger’s job-cut count” [Econoday]. “Yet weakness in manufacturing and related equipment investment, not questions in the labor market, is what the Federal Reserve cited as central to yesterday’s rate cut and here the news is not upbeat.”
Institute For Supply Management Manufacturing Index, July 2019: “Extending a straight slope down, ISM’s index fell” [Econoday]. “This report, together with very similar results from the manufacturing PMI sample released earlier this morning, do support the Federal Reserve’s concerns over manufacturing and specifically confirm Jerome Powell’s remarks at yesterday’s press conference that business contacts in the manufacturing sector, citing global slowing and tariff effects, are reporting trouble.”
Purchasing Managers Manufacturing Index, July 2019: “Markit’s US manufacturing sample has been moving steadily from slowing conditions to nearly stagnant conditions” [Econoday]. “The lack of confidence is affecting staffing levels which for this sample posted their first reduction in six years. Production moved forward last month but at the expense of backlogs which edged lower.”
Construction Spending, June 2018: “The construction sector has been a stubborn disappointment all year, failing to show much life despite strong conditions in the domestic economy and favorable financing rates” [Econoday]. “This report brings up questions of possible contraction in foreign investment in US real estate and whether construction, like manufacturing, is being pulled down by global slowing and related tariff effects.”
Banking: “AI is a road to customer success—but banks need to create guardrails too” [American Banker]. “Customers today yearn for a personalized human experience tailored to their needs, wants, and expectations – whether they are in your branch, dialing into your call center, or contacting you over social media. Advanced technologies can help banks create such experiences.” • Yeah, I’m yearning for a personalized human experience delivered by a human.
Banking: “Digital banks are racking up users, but will they ever make money?” [Quartz]. “The UK has become something of a laboratory for newfangled digital banks, which are attracting thousands of new customers each day. But there are some big questions: Will bigger legacy banks eventually learn the fintech firms’ tricks? And will the so-called neobanks ever become profitable?… ‘I’ve heard of situations where core banking platforms are written in COBOL and the coders are starting to die out,’ said Michael Kent, CEO of money transfer startup Azimo and a founder of Tandem, a neobank. ‘They’re spending billions and billion and billions to try to fix that huge technical debt.’” • I’m sure writing everything from the ground up in Node.js will solve everything.
Credit: “Sorry, you’re not getting $125 from the Equifax settlement, FTC says” [MarketWatch]. “The Federal Trade Commission announced Wednesday that, due to an overwhelming response, cash payments aren’t going to be anywhere near $125 each, and urged consumers to sign up for the free credit monitoring offered as an alternative.” • So, if I have this right, I now have to give Equifax even more of my data, as compensation for the data they lost? More: “‘A large number of claims for cash instead of credit monitoring means only one thing: each person who takes the money option will wind up only getting a small amount of money,’ the FTC said in a blog post Wednesday.” • What kind of settlement is that? What was the FTC thinking when it drafted it? Wikipedia notes: “Most people get little benefit from paying for regular credit reporting.” Who on earth wouldn’t want the [family blogging] cash?
Housing: “LGBTQ-centric neighborhoods offer home price premiums, studies suggest” [Los Angeles Times]. “[G]ayborhood residents can cash in big — up to 294% more value for their homes compared with those in surrounding metro areas, as shown in the [Zillow] analysis of 36 housing markets, released in May.”
Shipping: “The world’s biggest shipyards are forging a new landscape for buying and building ocean vessels. The impending mergers of the shipbuilders in South Korea and in China will create two behemoths that will control around 46% of the global market among the world’s top 10 yards” [Wall Street Journal]. “That will give the combined Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. and the merged China Shipbuilding Industry Corp. and China State Shipbuilding Corp. weightier control of the global market for ships over smaller competitors.”
Manufacturing: “Airbus SE is trying to speed up its supply chain while rival Boeing Co. is just hoping to get part of its production line moving at all. Airbus increased its quarterly profit more than fivefold despite bottlenecks that have hobbled the company’s ability to step up the delivery pace… Airbus has been struggling to produce more of the largest version of its A321 single-aisle aircraft, and delays in deliveries have aggravated airlines’ capacity issues caused by the grounding of Boeing’s 737 MAX” [Wall Street Journal]. “Airbus increased its deliveries by 28% in the first half of the year to 389 planes but still must deliver about 500 jets the rest of the year to meet its financial targets. Airbus may face pushback from parts suppliers. Slower traffic growth has suppliers to both Airbus and Boeing getting cautious about supporting higher aircraft production.”
Fodder for the Bulls: “The Next Bailout May Come From Consumers” [Conor Sen, Bloomberg (FluffytheObeseCat)]. “Now that we know the saving rate is at 8.1%, rather than 6.1% as believed a month ago, we can see how different this environment is for households versus the past two cycles. In December 2000, on the brink of the 2001 recession, the saving rate was 4.2%. In December 2007, as the great recession was beginning, the saving rate was 3.7%. The saving rate would have to fall by around 4% — equivalent to around $750 billion i.. n annual consumption — before households would find themselves as tapped out as they were then…. With the saving rate high relative to the last 25 years, households aren’t in the position where they need to save more. So if an economic shock originated elsewhere — if corporations or the government found themselves needing to save more — households could spend more.” • The comments are interesing: “Too bad all that saving is only in the top 10% of incomes,” “The problem with the suggestion that savings rate is up… up for who? We have auto loan defaults higher than ever. There is a disconnect between who is saving and who is not… my guess is the savers are not spenders and will not spend us out of an economic slowdown.” What do readers think?
The Biosphere
“Life is tough” [Aeon]. “Extremophiles tell us that everything we think we know about the fragility of life is wrong. Life is indeed extraordinary, not to mention precious and deserving of reverence – but not in any sense miraculous. The word extremophile didn’t exist until the 1970s. It entered wide circulation only after 1979 when the US Navy’s submersible Alvin revealed ecosystems prospering in deep-ocean hydrothermal vents. The Alvin scientists discovered organisms living in superheated water and largely metabolising hydrogen sulphide, which until then had been thought toxic and incompatible with life…. Extremophiles are in a sense antitheological and a cure for life-worshipping mysticism, another nail in the coffin that proclaims living things to be divinely created because they couldn’t possibly derive from natural processes. They also expand the possible playing field within which life initially evolved.”

First Philly, now these. Summer heats up the pipes, or something?
“Kentucky gas explosion: One person killed, 5 injured” [CNN]. “A gas explosion rocked a Kentucky community Thursday morning, leaving one person dead and lighting at least six homes on fire, according to local authorities…. Gilliam said authorities believe the explosion was the result of a rupture of a 30-inch gas transmission pipeline, but it will take time to definitively determine the cause.”
“Explosion, fire at Exxon Mobil Baytown plant injures 37” [Houston Chronicle]. “A fire at an Exxon Mobil plant in Baytown Wednesday morning injured 37 people and sent a plume of smoke over a Houston-area chemical facility for the fourth time since April. It was the second fire this year at an Exxon Mobil facility in Baytown. The company’s operations in the east Harris County city have a history of environmental violations stretching back to 2013. The cause of Wednesday’s fire was not immediately known, although the company said the blaze began with an explosion.”
“Boom Goes the Plastics Industry” [Sierra Club]. “Facing intensifying global efforts to curtail the use of oil and gas for transportation and energy—and at the same time seeking markets for the torrent of oil and gas from the US fracking boom—the fossil fuel industry is looking to plastics as a lifeline. Today, 14 percent of oil and 8 percent of gas is used for the manufacture of petrochemicals, the essential feedstock of plastic production. The International Energy Agency predicts that by 2050, 50 percent of the growth in oil demand will be related to petrochemicals… ExxonMobil and Saudi Aramco, among the world’s largest fossil fuel companies, are betting big on plastics. … The American Chemistry Council reports that since 2010, plans for 333 new chemical-manufacturing projects have been announced in the United States, representing more than $200 billion in capital investments; the industry association notes that “much of the investment is geared toward export markets for chemistry and plastics products.’”
Guillotine Watch
“Backlash at barefoot Prince Harry and ‘hypocrite Greenerati’: Eco-warrior elite who turned up at secret climate change Google camp in 114 private jets, helicopters and mega yachts are mocked for leaving their own carbon footprint” [Daily Mail]. • As usual, the Daily Mail headline tells the entire story, but for more detail: “A host of A-list celebrities faced an angry backlash today after they travelled to a climate change conference in Italy in a fleet of supercars, expensive yachts and more than 100 private jets…. h The event, created by Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, sees some of the world’s wealthiest business leaders and tech gurus discussing various issues in morning sessions before relaxing in the Italian sunshine in the afternoon.” • Poor optics! The guest list is amusing, too.
“Where the Wealthy Go in Private Jets, From Bahamas to Barbados” [Bloomberg]. “Private jet flights climbed almost 10% last year, according to an analysis of 30 island destinations by real estate broker Knight Frank and aviation adviser WingX. Private jets flew to islands in the Americas almost 30,000 times, making them the world’s top hub for non-commercial aviation, led by the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and the Cayman Islands… The Philippines, Maldives and Bali were the top destinations in the Asia-Pacific region, which saw private-jet arrivals increase more than 80%, reflecting a wealth boom in which China minted a new billionaire roughly every other day.”
“Harvard has the highest number of ultra-rich alumni — by an insane margin” [MarketWatch]. “Harvard is in an Ivy League of its own, with more than 13,650 estimated [Ultra-High Net Worth (UHNW)] alumni worth $4.769 trillion — more than double the figure for Stanford…. Wealth-X reports that almost 80% of this group made their own fortunes, rather than inheriting it. In fact, most of the UHNW alumni (84%) were self-made…. [J]ust 244 of the 2,153 billionaires in the world are women, and women account for just 6.6% of Fortune 500 CEOs.”
“Jeffrey Epstein Hoped to Seed Human Race With His DNA” [New York Times]. “On multiple occasions starting in the early 2000s, Mr. Epstein told scientists and businessmen about his ambitions to use his New Mexico ranch as a base where women would be inseminated with his sperm and would give birth to his babies, according to two award-winning scientists and an adviser to large companies and wealthy individuals, all of whom Mr. Epstein told about it. It was not a secret. The adviser, for example, said he was told about the plans not only by Mr. Epstein, at a gathering at his Manhattan townhouse, but also by at least one prominent member of the business community.” • Lifting the lid on elite networking and money-grubbing. Epstein’s Harvard sweatshirt is prominently displayed in the photographs that accompany the article…
Class Warfare
“As Alaska’s budget uproar rolls on, a top Dunleavy adviser has seen it before” [Anchorage Daily News]. “But say the name “Donna Arduin” to an Alaskan these days and they’re likely to know exactly who you’re talking about. Arduin has been in the spotlight since Gov. Mike Dunleavy hired her as his top state budget executive shortly after his election in November, at a salary of $195,000. Her reputation preceded her: Arduin, 56, has an almost 30-year career as an itinerant ‘budget fixer’ of sorts, working for a series of Republican governors to balance state budgets, often by instituting drastic spending cuts…. “I joined government to shrink it,” Arduin said in a profile published in her Duke University alumni magazine in 2006. (The profile ends with Arduin whispering under her breath “get a job” to a panhandling man.)” • She sounds nice. The same alert reader who submitted this link also sent this note about the Alaska ferries:
I am one of the ferry passengers who has been stranded due to the shutdown of the ferries. I am currently on an island which is only accessible by boat and plane, and since the government-operated ferry is out of service, and there is no private ferry which can get me closer to my destination, plane is the only option. I have booked a flight ticket out, which will be my first time on an airplane since 2014. I am in a better position than many of my fellow passengers. Many other passengers have vehicles, which cannot be moved by airplane. Some of them were also riding the ferries to get medical care not available in their home communities, and are concerned about being able to make their doctor’s appointments. Some of them are also going to take a much bigger financial hit than I will. Of course, those of us who are not Alaska residents (or who are leaving Alaska) will not need to deal with this situation anymore once we manage to leave Alaska. The coastal communities of Alaska will continue to feel the repercussions as long as there is a loss of ferry service, especially if the severe budget cuts make the loss of ferry service permanent.
“Labor of Love”‘ [The Baffler]. “”Full Surrogacy Now,” the rallying cry, is a radical demand for the dissolution of notions like ‘biological parents’ and their opposites, (underpaid) (hired) (invisible) gestational surrogates. ‘We are the makers of one another,’ [Sophie] Lewis writes. ‘And we could learn collectively to act like it. It is those truths that I wish to call real surrogacy, full surrogacy.’ …. The problem, in Lewis’s view, isn’t that women are risking their lives and paid shockingly low wages to bear the offspring of others, efforts which are considered ‘generous’ instead of ‘a job,’ before being erased from family histories entirely. The problem is that we haven’t spent any time considering what the fact and endurance of surrogacy from at least the transatlantic slave-trade days to the present might say about unwaged pregnancy. After all, pregnancy is—well, labor.” • Hmm.

Readers: Water Cooler is a standalone entity not covered by the annual NC fundraiser. So do feel free to make a contribution today or any day. Here is why: Regular positive feedback both makes me feel good and lets me know I’m on the right track with coverage. When I get no donations for five or ten days I get worried. More tangibly, a constant trickle of small donations helps me with expenses, and I factor in that trickle when setting fundraising goals. So if you see something you especially appreciate, do feel free to click this donate button:
Here is the screen that will appear, which I have helpfully annotated.
Readers, I have redesigned the image above because the composition of your Water Cooler donations has changed. For the last few months, donations have shifted to monthly donations in smaller amounts, with very few one-time donations in larger amounts. While I’m very happy to have enabled small contributions (Luke 21:1-4), the lack of larger contributions has cut into the trickle of funding from Water Cooler that I really do depend on. In other words, your contributions are way down. (Readership and comment counts have not fallen, so I don’t think Water Cooler editorial content as such is the issue, though do feel free to drop me a line if you have thoughts.)
So, I redesigned the image to emphasize one-time donations, while still enabling smaller monthly donations. And if you’ve been waiting for a good excuse to contribute, perhaps last night’s debate coverage will provide an excuse!
If you hate PayPal, you can email me at lambert [UNDERSCORE] strether [DOT] corrente [AT] yahoo [DOT] com, and I will give you directions on how to send a check. Thank you!

Tar Sands Math
Tumblr media
Learned some shocking things about the Alberta tar sands* this week.  You know the tar sands - that which has been dubbed “the most environmentally-destructive project on Earth.”  But most Canadians think it’s also an economic necessity that drives the country’s entire economy, and certainly Alberta’s.  So much so that their federal government was happy to buy a $3.5 billion dollar pipeline to help get the dinosaur juice to far-flung markets.  That, of course, is over-and-above the $3.3 billion dollars the country provides in annual subsidies to the fucking oil & gas industry??? OK.  $3.3 billion in taxpayer subsidies to the oil & gas industry + $3.5 billion to buy a goddamn pipeline nobody wants.  $6.8 billion dollars down the oil & gas drain in one year.  But hey, it’s necessary because oil & gas are hurting right now with the drop in oil prices, right? 1) Wrong.  In 2017, right when oil prices were in the middle of the slump, the five biggest tar sands companies - who together own 46% of the oil reserves contained therein - made a combined profit of $13.5 billion dollars!  What?  Excuse me?  Why in the hell would Canadians provide $3.3 billion in tax subsidies to an industry where the top five producers made an average $2.7 billion profit each during an oil slump?     Well, ok, but think of all the jobs they create!  That’s gotta count for something, right?  Surely all those tar sands jobs are worth the subsidy we give to the industry and also worth the 70 megatonnes of carbon emissions the tar sands creates annually as the least-efficient, most-polluting way to extract oil (which, BTW, represents 10% of Canada’s total carbon emissions).   2) Wrong again.  The total number of jobs that are dependent on the tar sands?  22,340 jobs.  Which turns out to be fewer than are employed in green energy in the country these days.   Let’s think about these numbers for a second.  Canadian taxpayers pay $3.3 billion annually + another $3.5 billion for special deals like the Keystone pipeline purchase bailout to keep an industry running that is responsible for 10% of the country’s carbon emissions, even though that industry clearly does not need the subsidy, since the five biggest companies in the industry posted an average profit of $2.7 billion during an oil price slump.  All of this is justified in order to keep 22,340 Canadians employed in the industry, at a cost-per-job of $147,717 per job (= the $3.3 billion annual subsidy divided by the number of tar sands jobs out there). If we shut down the tar sands tomorrow and instead created 22,340 jobs in the green energy sector that each paid an annual salary of $100,000, it would save Canadian taxpayers over a billion dollars annually and drop our carbon emissions by 10% overnight.  Let an industry posting $13.5 billion in profits during a downturn subsidize itself!  Put those new green jobs into projects converting Alberta to a 100% green electricity grid and create a bonus 5-6% drop in Canadian carbon emissions.   Think about that last idea for a second.  Alberta is abundant in wind & sun.  Edmonton gets as much sun as Miami; Calgary gets as much sunlight as Rio de Janeiro.  If we taxed the profits of the five biggest tar sands companies at 50% and then put the resulting $6.75 billion into converting Alberta’s electrical grid to 100% green energy, the province could close all of its coal-fired power plants in less than six years and reduce it’s annual carbon emissions by at least 15% (and Canada’s by 5-6%).  And those five biggest tar sands companies?  They would still walk about with $1.35 billion in profits.  Each.   Let’s look at it another way: the total combined profits of the 32 tar sands companies out there is likely $30 billion per year during this period of low-oil prices.  Which means we could bribe these 32 companies to cease operations, keep the oil in the ground, and refrain from releasing 70 megatonnes of carbon emissions for an annual cost of $30 billion.  So, what have we learned?  We’ve learned that we could shut down the tar sands completely and reduce Canada’s carbon emissions by 15-16% while keeping all 32 tar sands companies profitable & replacing every lost tar sands job with a green energy sector job at a salary of $100,000 by focusing those jobs on converting Alberta’s electrical grid to 100% green energy.  All that for the cost of  $32.2 billion/year.  $32.2 billion =   9.4% of the 2019 Canadian federal budget.  Or: 6% of Germany’s federal budget. Or: 2.3% of the UK’s federal budget.  Or: 1.1% of the U.S. federal budget. Or: .8% of China’s federal budget.
Are we going to choose to do the responsible thing, dramatically reduce carbon emissions, and keep everyone employed and the corporations profiting from killing us all profitable but not killing us all for the price of a fraction of the budget of any one of the world’s largest economies?  Or are we going to continue to speed towards mass extinction? *yes, I know that the friendly people at the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers would prefer that I use the term “oil sands” instead of tar sands.  No, I do not give a fuck what those fuckbags think and I hope they, as a lobby group activating promoting the total destruction of the environment and the extinction of all life on the planet for the short-term benefit of their benefactors’ bank accounts -  all immediately choke to death on their own vomit.

Comparing The East-End vs. The West-End In November
TorontoRealtyBlog
Well, there are a couple of items to address at the onset of today’s blog.
First, I’m certainly opening myself to more suggestions by responding to a Friday-commenter’s request for a blog post with exactly what he/she asked for.  What can I say?  The suggestion made me realize that by only providing the November data on “holdbacks” for houses on the east side, I’m merely telling part of the market’s story.
Secondly, the idea that I have an “east side bias” isn’t fair.  In fact, I’ve sold more homes on the west side than on the east side this fall, and this year.  The only reason I go to the east side quite often as a “default” of sorts is because it provides us with a great representation of the market.  There’s always ample data (ie. sales, and you’ll realize that as soon as I lay out the data in today’s blog), and the price point represents what a majority of freehold-buyers are looking for.
In terms of which area I prefer, I assure you, I have no preference.
So with that out of the way, let’s get to the meat and potatoes of today’s blog.
On Friday, I posted statistics about sales on the east side in November, and paid specific attention to which houses had “holdbacks” on offers (ie. the most common strategy for selling a freehold home, by under-pricing and setting an offer date).
There were a few takeaways, depending on exactly what you’re interested in.
But rather than rehash those now, I figured I would re-run the same ten “questions” about the market, referencing the west side this time, and then see how the data compares to the east side.
For your reference, I have chosen to look at freehold sales in W01, W02, W06, W07, and W08.
I didn’t want to look at W06, since it’s really pushing the boundaries of what one might consider “Toronto” or “the core,” but if we’re looking at areas of W08 that push the western boundary (ie. Markland Wood, Eringate-Centennial), then we may as well look at the whole lot.  We’ll break it down into “prime” locations later on.
1) What percentage of sales were for houses with a “holdback” on offers?
36.1%.
Of the 122 homes, forty-four had a holdback on offers.
Compare this to the east side, which saw 50/100 with a holdback on offers.
I do believe that this is because there are specific locations on the west side which do not partake in the holdback strategy (for reasons we’ll get into), but for now, let’s follow the same outline as Friday.
2) Of the 44 sales, how many were via bully offer?
Five.
That’s 11.4%.
I find this very interesting, consider the data for the east end on Friday showed that 6/50 sales were via bully offer, or 12%.
We might not have a lot of similarities between the two areas by the time this is done, but I think you could argue a good case that the “bully offer acceptance rate” in the city of Toronto is around 12%.
3) How did the bully offer prices compare to the rest?
The average sale-to-list ratio for the 5 bully offer sales was 113%.
The average sale-to-list ratio for the other 39 sales was 109%.
Compare this to the figures of 115% and 114% respectively in the east-end areas we looked at on Friday, and I see even more of a pattern!
First, consider that there was a “premium” via the bully offer in both areas.  And while 1% vs. 4% might seem like a gap when compared together, in the context of the overall percentages, I consider there to be a nominal difference here.
Second, consider the average sale-to-list ratios, east-versus-west: 115% vs. 113% for properties sold via bullies, which again, is a rounding error.  And 114% vs 109%, which shows a gap, but nothing significant.
4) Was there a pattern among the houses bullied?
Unlike in Friday’s east-end analysis, where 5/6 properties that sold via bully offer were under $1,000,000, and thus a pattern could be identified, there is no pattern in the west end.
The list prices of the five properties that sold via bully offer: $699,888, $849,000, $1,290,000, $1,499,000, $2,498,000.
And these were in four different communities.
Not really.  But perhaps we could try to find one.
5) What was the average sale price for the houses with no offer date?
97%.
The figure for the east-end in Friday’s blog was 99%.
No real difference here, except that there were a handful of really, really low sales, ie. 88% of list price (a figure we almost never see), and we didn’t see anything like this on the east side.
6) Did any of the houses without offer dates sell over list?
Yes, this time it was 7.
7 out of 44, or 15.9%.
This is about two-thirds of what we saw in the east-end, as 12/50 houses over there sold for over asking, with no offer date.
It’s also important to note that the highest sale-to-list ratio here in the west end, for a property that sold over asking without an offer date, was 112%.  This was 127% in the east end.
But the average sale-to-list ratios line up well: 107% on the east side, 105% on the west side.
7) What was the difference in timing for those listings with/without holdbacks?
The average days on market for properties with a holdback was 9.6 days.
The average days on market for properties without a holdback was 21.0 days.
These numbers were 6.8 and 18.9 respectively on the east side.
To be honest, and this might sound like absolute lunacy, but I see a pattern among the west end listings where many of them aren’t updated or marked “sold” for 2-3 days after the offer date.  I suspect perhaps the agents run a different show out there?  That’s generalizing, but save for the top dogs in High Park and Bloor West Village who are on the ball (I checked…) I saw a lot of fly-by-nighter agents taking their sweet time to update listings on the west end.
So maybe that explains why, when most of us hold-back offers for exactly seven days, we’re seeing 6.8 days on the east side, and 9.6 days on the west side.
Or maybe I’m making something out of nothing.
Also interesting is that the average DOM for properties without a holdback on offers is only 2 days, or 10%, more on the west side.  That’s still within a reasonable range of difference, in my opinion.
8) What was the difference in average list price?  Any inferences to be drawn with regards to strategy?
The average list price for houses with a holdback on offers was $1,060,450.
The average list price for houses without a holdback was $1,323,470.
These numbers were $930,180 and $1,202,276 respectively on the east side.
Once again, see a pattern here when we look at east versus west!
On the west side, the average price of a house without a holdback on offers was 24.8% higher than the average price of a house with a holdback.  And on the east side?  29.6%.
24.8% vs. 29.6%.  Again, we’re looking at a very comparable range!
And as with the east end, we see that the more expensive a house, the less likely there’s a holdback.
On the west side, only one of the 18-most-expensive homes had a holdback on offers.
59 houses were listed under $1,000,000, and 25 of those had a holdback on offers – 42.4%.
63 houses were listed over $1,000,000, and 19 of those had a holdback on offers – 30.2%.
This absolutely bucks the trend from the east-end data, where we saw a whopping 70.1% of homes priced under $1M result in a holdback on offers, against only 22.9% of homes over $1M.  I suspect this is because of a few very weak areas, which I’ll address shortly.
9) Was there any difference in listing strategy by house type?
90 houses were detached, and 29 had offer dates – 32.2%.
32 houses were semi-detached or row-houses, and 15 had offer dates – 46.9%.
As with point #8, the west end sees far less difference here than the east end.  71.1% of semi-detached or row-houses on the east side had holdbacks on offers.
10 Any difference between E01, E02, and E03 themselves?
There were 16 sales in W01, and 6 had holdbacks on offers – 37.5%
There were 27 sales in W02, and 18 had holdbacks on offers – 66.7%.
There were 28 sales in W06, and 7 had holdbacks on offers – 25.0%.
There were 10 sales in W07, and 3 had holdbacks on offers – 30.0%.
There were 41 sales in W08, and 10 had holdbacks on offers – 24.4%.
As I suspected from the onset, W06 (Mimico, Long Branch Alderwood, New Toronto), and W08 (bordering Mississauga to the west, Eglinton to the north, and Humber River to the east) are just not in the same league as the areas closer to the core.
And consider that of the 10 properties in W08, out of 41, that had holdbacks on offers, the six-lowest-priced properties were all included in those 10.
The same isn’t true of W06.  There are all kinds of detached bungalows selling under-asking.
As a refresher, here is a map of the West TREB districts:
So there you have it, folks.
I see a lot of similarities in terms of how the market works, ie. the percentages of bully offers, the sale-to-list ratios, the corresponding difference in list price for houses with different listing strategies, et al.
I actually find these similarities exceptionally interesting!  Some of them point to a highly efficient market, one where you could probably come up with a highly-predictive model if you put enough time into it.
As for the differences, I think that in a nutshell, we can say that the east side is busier than the west side, and that even takes into account the prime areas like Roncesvalles, High Park, Junction, Bloor West Village, and Kingsway.
Of course, much of this depends on price as well.
Can you compare a $1,800,000 house in High Park to a $950,000 house in Danforth Village?  Should we expect these houses to be sold in the same way, with the same strategy?
Note that I said the east side is “busier” than the west side above, I didn’t say “hotter.”
I might argue that the east side is, in fact, hotter.  But that’s completely subjective, and the higher demand would be based purely on the lower price point for homes that area closer to downtown, ie. Danforth Village versus Mimico.
So thanks to my reader for the suggestion, and I hope this helps some of you add to your bank of market knowledge.
