Frogs, French fries and frivolity
5 May 2020 - alphabetical post #7
Frog Hollow Reserve in Endeavour Hills was an easy choice as the venue for my “F” parkrun after completing the first five runs from A to E. It was mid November and some fine weather had finally arrived. The Frog Hollow parkrun is a favourite because it features a fast, flat course, as long as it is dry. In very wet weather, it can be frustrating to find that flooding has occurred.
At the briefing, we were fascinated to hear that eastern banjo frogs could be found in the reserve wetlands. They are also known as pobblebonk frogs, named for their distinct “bonk” call. Although feeling fairly fatigued from my chemo, I had enough faith in my fitness, compromised though it was, not to fear bonking in the race, sorry, run (because parkrun is not a race).
I was familiar with the course, having run it once before in 2017 when I was in fine fettle, setting an M60 age group record which miraculously still stands. This run would be far different, as I was now doing less than 20 kilometres per week, down from 80 kilometres per week pre-cancer when I was running frequently and feeling fighting fit.
But I was focussed on putting my best foot forward given the favourable conditions and fast course. From the start, a few fleet-footed runners at the front of the field, one of whom was female, flew out at a fierce pace. I was fortunate to find a fellow member of the Melbourne Midday Milers, Ross, to run with. Initially I had to force myself to keep up, but then I settled in and went with the flow. I felt fairly comfortable with my form at around four minute k’s.
During the fourth and fifth kilometres, we both faded a bit, but fired up with a furious final surge to the line. It was good fun. I ran 20:31 and Ross was rewarded with a PB. The fast female ahead of us won the race, or if you prefer, was the first finisher in a non-race. Afterwards, it is fair to say that I didn’t feel flash and was too fragile to run any further in a warm down.

Following some friendly post-run banter and a dog walk, Candice and I decided to forego coffee and instead find somewhere to get some French fries to eat (well, that’s a fib, but never let the truth get in the way of more F words). For driving music, we had either the Fleet Foxes or Foo Fighters to choose from, but as a Tom Petty fan, I first played his fabulous song “Free Falling”.
I hope that you have read this frivolous post without flinching too often, and will forgive me for using a farcical number of F words.
Course ratings: Course - out and back plus lake lap, one bridge crossed twice, flat, fast ***** Surface - concrete path ***** Setting - Frog Hollow Reserve wetlands and sports fields ***** Social index - friendly volunteers, pleasant conversation in the sun *****
This post’s F word count: 107 (an alphabetical PB).
Next post will be brought to you by the letter G.

I took a little walk around the garden while the sun shone briefly, and spotted a little friend chilling in the bathtub pond. Heshe barely moved, unlike the mosquito larvae and other, smaller water creatures. Hopefully a shehe Banjo frog turns up and tadpoles appear in due course. 🤞🏻 #frog #australianfauna #australianfrog #banjofrog #pobblebonk #backyardwildlife #watercreatures #naturephotography #gardening (at Moyston, Victoria, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRa2OnQroqt/?utm_medium=tumblr
