NEW TRACKS: The Strokes — “At The Door” and “Bad Decisions”
The Strokes have made some of the best rock songs of the 21st century, thanks to their ability to create timeless music that is half groundbreaking, half nostalgic. Although the New York quintet have been preoccupied with side projects and family lives, which resulted in only 26 new Strokes songs coming out in the 2010s, they have amassed an increasing fanbase over the years.
At a Bernie Sanders rally that the band performed at on February 10, they premiered a video for their new song titled “At The Door,” which was officially released the next day.
“At The Door” combines the atmospheric energy of two great Strokes cuts from the songs “Call it Fate, Call it Karma” and “80’s Comedown Machine” on the album Comedown Machine. The song also features the Daft Punk synth sounds that Julian Casablancas played in the song “Instant Crush.” “At The Door” possesses incredible and impassioned vocals from Casablancas, whose melody will stick in the listener’s head. It is a great somber record that reintroduces the band after four years of no new music, and seven since their last full length album.
“Bad Decisions,” an additional new Strokes single, has an energetic and catchy chorus. The outro consists of intense vocals alongside frantic guitar work from Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. The track pays homage to the classic songs “I Melt with You” by Modern English and “Dancing with Myself” by Billy Idol (who receives a songwriting credit). Much like how “Last Nite” had an intro that borrowed heavily from “American Girl” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the song uses a familiar musical template to create a brand new rock song that reinvigorates the genre by leaning into the past.
Over the past couple of weeks, Strokes fans have been showered with great news. A new album titled The New Abnormal, produced by Rick Rubin, is coming out April 10, and tour dates are being added constantly.
Casablancas made a direct admission of their musical silence at a massive show in Barclays Center this past New Year’s Eve: “Yeah, we’ve got a new album coming out soon. 2020, here we come. The 2010s, whatever the f*** they’re called, we took ‘em off. And now we’ve been unfrozen and we’re back. If you really love someone, you’ll be frozen with them.”
“At The Door” proves that The Strokes continue to be innovative, and “Bad Decisions” proves that they can still make modern classic rock songs.

ALBUM REVIEW: The Archer - Alexandra Savior
The Archer, released on January 10th, shows Alexandra Savior moving on from her songwriting partnership with the Arctic Monkeys frontman to create a fantastic new sound on her sophomore release.
The record starts off swinging with the somber piano interlude “Soft Currents.” These lyrics pierce so deep into the human condition that listeners should pay her directly for a free therapy session. The heavy and chugging “Saving Grace” works alongside sinister guitar work and a poignant falsetto giving the song multiple layers of mystic charm.
Other highlights are “Send Her Back” which has musicianship straight out of the Amy Winehouse playbook, but with a beautiful Savior touch that makes it much more than an homage. “Can’t Help Myself” starts off sonically like a walk on the beach that quickly builds to a passionate embrace towards your lover in the distance. “Howl” has a bass and vocal combination that’s psychedelic euphoria with backing instrumentation that pairs beautifully  Savior’s calm and cool charm making it a clear highlight.
The Archer does an incredible job of not only improving on Savior’s songwriting talent from her solid 2017 debut Belladonna of Sadness, but by also perfectly balancing thematic, organic, and vintage sounds in a beautifully packaged 31 minutes of alt-pop bliss.

ALBUM REVIEW: The Black Keys - “Let’s Rock”
The Black Keys’ comeback album may not be as loud as the title suggests, but that doesn’t stop the guitar from shining through and leaving an impact.
Ohio duo The Black Keys have returned after a five-year hiatus with a deliberate attempt at returning to their rock roots.
Some critics have unfairly judged “Let’s Rock” for playing it safe, but it’s never a bad idea to make an album that focuses on your strengths from time to time. It would be one thing if the songs were boring or uninspired, but the band is playing with a passion and swagger that makes almost all of the songs infectious.
The pay off is most rewarding when they play to their strengths. “Every Little Thing,” for instance, wouldn’t sound out of place on their heavier albums from the 2000s.  Additionally, “Tell Me Lies” is a beautiful Fleetwood Mac-inspired number, “Go” — the album’s catchiest track — has a chorus to which you can’t help but sing along, and “Breaking Down” brings out the sitar, an instrument that has sadly been given little to no respect in the 21st century.
While the record does have a few speed bumps, overall, it still delivers. The Black Keys may not have released the album of the year, but they have delivered one of the best guitar driven records of 2019.

NEW TRACKS: Tame Impala - “Borderline”
In the years that have followed Tame Impala’s 2015 breakthrough album, Currents, Kevin Parker has shared his psychedelic sound with big name rappers such as Travis Scott and Kanye West, collaborated with Mark Ronson and Lady Gaga, and been covered by Rihanna on ANTI. This begs the question: What can Kevin Parker do next to match that success?
“Borderline,” the second single released this year from Tame Impala's yet to be officially announced follow-up album, finds Parker going back to his signature funky bass groove swagger. However, this time around, the production is more natural and organic, resulting in the instruments all being clearly heard in the mix. By adding bongos and woodwinds to the track, “Borderline” stands apart from not only other Tame Impala songs, but also typical ones made in 2019.
With beautiful falsetto, a repetitive and groovy rhythm section, and a chorus that will undoubtedly get stuck in your head, it appears that Tame Impala already have a song of the year contender under their belt.

ALBUM REVIEW: Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride
In recent years, Vampire Weekend kept a relatively low profile. Rostam, a primary songwriter alongside lead singer Ezra Koenig, left the group in 2016 to pursue his passion of producing. Bassist Chris Baio and drummer Chris Tomson focused on musical side projects, and Ezra worked on his Apple Music radio show, Time Crisis, as well as created the anime Neo Yokio with the help of Jaden Smith, Jude Law, and Susan Sarandon.
The Billboard 200 number one album and critically adored Modern Vampires of the City was released all the way back in 2013, and the wait for a follow up was incredibly brutal for hardcore fans. Mitsubishi Macchiato (the original working album title) was teased to audiences as far back as January 2016. Finally, after six long years, the band is back. The release of the tracks “Harmony Hall” and “2021” in January of this year reminded everyone that Vampire Weekend are still capable of making amazing music.
Father of the Bride (FOTB) is eighteen tracks long, giving fans much to unpack. Thematically, the record is centered on maturing as an individual while being in a relationship. Danielle Haim (of HAIM), now known as the Captain Marvel of the Vampire Weekend Music Universe (VWMU), plays the role of significant other on FOTB. She appears on about half the tracks as either a featured or background singer.
While some listeners might not like this Fleetwood Mac-esque male/female singer dynamic, most people can agree that Danielle enriches the album beyond anyone’s preconceived beliefs.
When it comes to the music itself, there are too many jams for the casual listener to not find at least one to listen to repeatedly this summer. “Harmony Hall” is an instant standout thanks to its very timely lyrics and vibes reminiscent of The Rolling Stones circa 1969. “Hold You Now” and “Big Blue” both give off a George Harrison feel due to Phil Specter-inspired production and the incorporation of slide guitar.
The two songs featuring Steve Lacy of The Internet are beautifully melodic pop perfection. “Unbearably White” is Vampire Weekend’s rendition of soft rock – a genre that few fans of the band probably listen to – but by adding Titanic-sounding woodwinds to the background as well as extremely poetic lyrics, the listener can do nothing but swoon.
Vampire Weekend is doing their best job of keeping the rock genre modern and relevant in a time where other genres are becoming more and more dominant on the mainstream scale. They hit number one again with this record. Basically, these Vampires are bringing life back to the alternative rock scene.

Top Tracks: “Harmony Hall,” “Unbearably White,” “Sunflower,” “Flower Moon,” and “Jerusalem, Berlin, New York”
