Balens Cho (Hot Candles), Mach-Hommy (2021)
Tumblr media
The man doesn’t rest: Balens Cho is another release that should be the envy of any other rapper, swooning and blaring and looping with precision and purpose and eloquence. It’s as you’d expect of such a formidable auteur, of which there is no doubt Mach is.
Pick: ‘Lajan Sal’

Having dropped two of the best rap albums of 2021 (Pray For Haiti and Balens Cho), Mach stays making moves in 2022.  Pitchfork article, GQ feature - not sure too many folks foresaw this type of exposure for the talented Newark native back when he was independently selling his H.B.O. CD for $300 through Instagram.  What an incredible journey it has been so far...

Mach-Hommy - Balens Cho (Hot Candles)
(Conscious Hip Hop, Jazz Rap, East Coast Hip Hop)
A more streamlined effort than May's Pray for Haiti, Balens Cho is one of Mach-Hommy's most enriching albums even at just 24 minutes in length. Covering many of the same concepts as Pray for Haiti with a more urgent, personal lens, Balens Cho's definiteness is its strongest quality.
☆☆☆½
Rappers like Mach-Hommy always interest me so much: With the internet age and the acceptance of more left-field hip hop into the critical and mainstream circles, those who actively try and stray from those boundaries like Mach-Hommy garner attention even if their music isn't always the strongest. Mach's approach to this is one of the most extreme: selling his albums for exorbitant prices so that only the truest fans can access his work. If you can't pay, get ready to go Soulseek diving or pray that you have a friend who can lend you a ZIP file; Mach-Hommy doesn't always make his music the easiest to find. This is in part because of the deeply personal and thought-provoking topics his music tackles, often tied to his Haitian identity as well as the Haitian-American culture he grew up in. Listening to his work without the intimate cultural understanding one can only have with personal experience can make his music feel incredibly voyeuristic as a listener; like you're invading somebody's diary or therapy session. Recently, he's begun opening his work up to a larger audience: his last two albums now have been put on streaming services, and his magical 2016 effort Haitian Body Odor has been put up there after years of waiting, too. His production has become more expressive and rich as a result, too, with May's Pray for Haiti embrace of Griselda crew's boom bap revivalism pushing a far more punishing sound to his beats than before that carries over to Balens Cho. This is the rowdiest his beats have been in years, taking advantage of large-scale orchestration to let his points land with less bite than before. His storytelling is more skillful as he harnesses melody on SEPARATION OF THE SHEEP AND THE GOATS, putting space between each topic he explores in the verses. Astral finale SELF LUH is one of the smoothest beats of the whole year, samples covered in analog static and fuzz with a signature Conductor Williams whiskey aftertaste that keeps Mach's plea for empathy and care for your soul from turning saccharine. While about half of Balens Cho is composed of interludes, few of the actual tracks ever disappoint. While Balens Cho is a more accessible (dare I say fun?) Mach-Hommy affair, it still deals with the Haitian political climate and his personal relationships with it in the same way all his work does. Some may be bothered by the fact that many of his albums focus on the same themes, but they're never treated the same by Mach, nor do they start being that way on Balens Cho. He focuses particularly on the future here, using the past as a blueprint for it. For most, the idea that "all space programs derive from Africa" is an unfamiliar concept, but with a little digging into it you can quickly learn that constellations were given names by ancient African astronomers and that one of the oldest known astronomical sites was built in Egypt, it's clear that Mach-Hommy's worldview is one fully grounded in a reality most of the world simply hasn't accepted yet. WOODEN NICKELS, an ode to Mach's grandfather who offered many economic opportunities for success to other New Jersey Haitians, but never got anything back for it from them, Mach gets you to wonder where the line between taking care of your community and taking care of yourself lies. More than ever, the inviting sound of Balens Cho makes sure that listeners with an attentive ear come out with more questions than they do answers. Mach's music is scarred by loss and deprivation, but it's never held back by it. The people in his world are still destroyed economically by American colonialism, but that's not where the story begins and ends. He speaks of the brother-in-law who fled to Europe for safety, his grandfather whose graciousness was taken advantage of, and the mental toll of it all on Mach himself. These issues aren't just analytics for Mach-Hommy: every single event has a direct effect on him is as an artist today. He never tries to solve any of these problems single-handedly, knowing that's a fool's errand; Mach-Hommy's music is for those looking for the same answers he is, and the hundreds of perspectives that can be drummed up by listening to his music are his intellectual contribution to the efforts he fights for.

Last week Mach-Hommy released a new album called Balens Cho (Hot Candles), and it's a tight companion piece to Pray for Haiti, his superb record from earlier this year. BC is 13 tracks, a few of which are just brief skits that hint at shady business deals taking place in Haiti, while the songs themselves are more insular than anything on PfH. Highlight "Wooden Nickels" is the record's morose, understated centerpiece that finds Mach delving into the betrayals he endured from those that owed money and favors to his deceased father. The instrumentation is sparse, with just minor key piano chords and saxophone bleats piercing tbe mix at irregular intervals to punctuate the tribulations laid out in the narrative.
"Wooden Nickels" almost functions more as straight up spoken word than it does a traditional hip hop song, and although it's not as sonically engaging as the bulk of his work it features some of the most stirring writing of his to date "Anytime of day you will see that car parked/Still smell the perfume when we went to card shark/Those scenes play in my mind like a documentary/Everything else is just another faded memory". BC on the whole feels somewhat slight with respect to the scope of PfH, but it's just as consistent, cohesive, and compelling, and never comes close to sounding like a pile of leftovers from those sessions. As Mach's work has gradually become more immediate and available with each subsequent release it's also become more singular and striking.
