Chewbacca

Chewie was my first Star Wars Action figure.

I had no knowledge of that Early Bird cardboard empty box set from Christmas 1977 that supposedly many kids got under their Christmas tree. I have no idea if my parents even were aware of it. I got a bootleg Force Beam lightsaber, Bigfoot board game and a stuffed Kermit the Frog for Christmas that year!

I remember going to a Dallas area Sears with my dad sometime in March of 1978. Goal was to order a “jungle gym” as I had outgrown my swing set. I guess a “jungle gym” was the step up at that point. This was later installed in the backyard by my dad and grandfather. The old swing set was sold in a garage sale. Probably would be considered a death trap today.

At some point during the purchase, I spotted a huge wired bin of Star Wars figures - not unlike a wired-bin you might see at Wal-Mart today with $5 DVDs or Blu-Rays. It was shocking, Mind blown. It was overwhelming to my young brain.

I recall my dad saying I could have one. 

I chose Chewbacca.

Why Chewie? I was always a taller kid in my class. A bigger kid. I think I identified with Chewie (and Marvel’s Thing). In fact, I’m certain that’s why I wanted him. 

I pocketed Chewbacca and carried him around all day. I pulled him out to show our neighbor Mr. Troubrough later that evening. He was an American Airlines pilot and politely feigned interest.

But back to that bin. That magical bin of figures. I never considered that I’d get the other figures left in the bin. I mean I was a fan at that point. I had a t-shirt. I’d seen the film twice. I might have had a puzzle. I was still only 6, and I just didn’t have that concept of a collection really in my mind. 

I always wondered years later if there might have been a vinyl caped Jawa or telescoping lightsaber Luke in that bin. Nobody at the time knew they’d be rare and exceptions to the norm. And if they were in the bin, who cares? If I’d chosen one of those for my first purchase my life wouldn’t have been changed. The same fate that awaited my collection would have befallen those rarities.
