Ripped From Today’s Headlines!

I have been deputized by the CEC to register voters. I have a badge. I took a vow. My name is on a roll somewhere.
My status is good for twelve months.
About three weeks ago, I attended a training session on the far side of town. Our county’s election commission has an operations center out east.
The staff was friendly and professional. Since I had done some voter registration efforts recently, I was familiar with their work. I did need the finer details the pros shared.
One finer detail - for deputy registrars, “the failure to return the forms to (the CEC) by the voter registration deadline is a Class E Felony”.
One of the commission staffers manages the schedule for us to attend voter registration events around the county. I can volunteer for whichever ones I want to attend. 30 June was one of those days.
The sun came up blazing hot Saturday morning. I left home, and did a touch-and-go at the local university hospital. A friend of mine was serving at a mens’ health summit. My friend’s wife is an M.D., and her practice supported the summit.
After mingling and gathering info, I headed off to my registration event. It was located in the office of an apartment complex in the northeast part of town.
The complex looked to be in good exterior shape as I drove around. I soon arrived at the leasing office, and talked a bit with the assistant manager.
The staff and customers were friendly. But, given that Independence Day is nigh, I got scant traffic. I got one applicant, and six folk who updated their addresses.
Today (Monday), I went to the downtown office of the CEC. The folk there are also quite helpful, and seemed happy to see me (especially once I showed my badge). I dropped off the forms, offered my thanks to the ladies, and headed back out into the summer heat.
It’s the start of yet another adventure. We have a county general and federal primary election on 2 August. Between that and the national federal election on 6 November, there’s plenty of work left to do.
I enjoy being a part of the process. To me, this is one way to have an immediate impact on one’s local environment.
