“Technowizard!” Tuck declared, pointing up towards the glass ceiling. The ratty Hack-A-Thon tee-shirt and Star Wars print pants did not an imposing outfit make.

Sam’s avocado-coated face barely even looked up from her phone. “Lame.”

“The Finest Pharoah!” Tucker tried again, glaring straight down at Sam as he posed again— this time, with his other hand.

“Cringe,” was Sam’s bland contribution.

Tucker threw both his hands in the air in sheer exasperation, narrowly avoiding sending Sheila2 flying up into the air with them. “The— oh shoot— the Tech Menace! The Electric Enemy!”

“Makes you sound like a bit-rate villain,” Sam drawled, finishing out her level of tetris with perfect accuracy. She clicked off the phone before she could get suckered in. “Tucker, have you considered any good names? At all?”

Fair revenge was fair revenge, and Tucker didn’t want to waste his own pillow on vengeance. Using Sam’s bamboo-woven pillowcase against her facemask was fair game— and her shriek of rage over the smeared facemask was just desserts.

Tucker eventually lost, of course, smothered underneath the very same pillow he’d assaulted his friend with, but hey; he’d given it his all, and that was what mattered in the end.

Winning would be nice, though. You know. One day.

In the meantime, though, they were squatting in Sam’s greenhouse, reclining on air mattresses on recycled wooden palettes. It was kind of cold— Tucker was glad Sam had thought ahead and brought blankets— but there were no bugs, and there was no rain, even if there were frogs singing bleakly outside glass walls throughout the night.

Sam was good at pretending it didn’t bother her.

Tucker knew it had to, though. Sam was used to having things. Being comfortable. Having her bamboo toothbrush and toothpaste tabs at the ready, with her natural fiber blankets and her desktop computer and a credit card that would solve the majority of her problems.

Instead they had used the cheapest versions of everything at the dollarstore. Abrasive discount soap. Deodorant with added aluminum. They’d brushed their teeth at the spigot where the hose screwed on, and tomorrow they’d wash with the hose the same way.

Card could be traced. Tucker was the only one who’d been carrying cash in the moment.

Man, Tucker thought, tunnelling himself under his blankets. Running away sucked. At least the only thing Tucker had to miss was his parents. And his spare parts.

…He hoped his parents weren’t looking for him. The "proper authorities" had probably already informed them he was infected. They should…they should hopefully know that being gone was safer than being there.

Sam’s black-nailed thumb and green-coated face peeked at him from under the covers. Without his glasses, she mostly looked like a blob, so Tucker just waved. He wanted to be social. He wanted to be happy.

It felt like everything was falling apart through his fingers, and there wasn’t anything he could do about it.

“Hey,” Sam said. “If you want to charge your tech, I’m out of the plug.”

It was a sweet gesture. “Thanks,” was all Tucker could say. But he didn’t want to leave his cave.

Sam, of all people, knew what level of trust the gesture meant when Tucker gave his phone over to her. She didn’t say anything, but she didn’t have to; it was the same level of trust Sam was showing to him by letting them stay here, together, instead of apart, the way Jazz had originally planned.

Running away properly would have been safer. But here, in this moment, they were warm, and safe, and somewhat fed.

Tucker stuck his face into his pillow and thought It doesn’t get much better than this.

…Man, it was supposed to be roast beef dinner tonight. He was missing out!

“...I still think that Technowizard is a cool name,” Tucker grumbled to himself. Sam shot him a fond, if exasperated look.

“No.”

“Fine, bossy. What did you pick?”

Tucker thought on it. It…had merit, but… “You know people are going to shorten it to Foxy, right?”

Sam paused.

…She set her phone down with clear disgust. “Ugh. I hate that you’re right.”

“I’ll never let you down,” Tucker offered, very seriously. “I’m always right.”

Sam pulled the blanket back down over him until he squawked in indignation.

“Okay,” Sam’s voice came in muffled through their blanket barrier. “Maybe we can both hold off on names until we decide how we’re doing this, exactly.”

This, of course, being their new life on the run— ideally, taking down the GIW and their hold on Amity Park, or in the short run, cutting and ditching in every effort to not get captured. Their plan so far wasn’t much better than “wait for Danny to get home from Space Camp”, but, you know…needs are as they must. Or something.

“How about Cryptid?” Tucker offered, poking his head out of his blanket hovel. His glasses were…somewhere, but no matter where he groped for them, his hands still came up empty. “Short. Simple. Lots of hard consonants. Easy to muddy up in an internet search with other information. They’d be looking for you and find, like, the Entfield Horror.”

Sam gave that thought its due while Tucker found his glasses. “It’s…better than Inviso-Bill for sure.”

Okay, that one was worth the laugh.

“You could try Technomage,” Sam tried out in turn. "It would be like naming a snake 'snake', since you’re going through magical puberty or whatever, but…”

Tucker snorted. Magical puberty.

…But.

She’d been the first to notice when Tucker hadn’t even needed to touch Edna (PDA of the month) to write her new programs in class. She’d taped over his stylus to prove it to him— and Tucker hadn’t even noticed with the weight of a phantom stylus in his hand as he coded telepathically. Realizing he hadn’t been tapping any of the buttons had been. Spooky.

His phone didn’t need a SIM card anymore. He was saving his family a lot on outgoing and ingoing calls, apparently, and the reported number of texts they’d had to pay for was a big fat goose egg.

Also, he was pretty sure someone was emailing him at the moment.

…He wasn’t sure how he knew. But. It kind of tasted like blue raspberry. It was probably Danny’s sister.

So. Um. the magical puberty thing hadn’t been too off track. It had certainly been less subtle than Sam’s newfound ability to speak with plants, but…at least talking to your flowerpots looks normal from the outside looking in.

Apparently lawn mowing day at school gave Sam real trauma, though. Finding her in the nurses’ office with her head buried under her denim jacket had been scary.

“Better than nothing,” Tucker begrudgingly agreed. He left his glasses wherever they were; he’d find them in the morning. “I mean. We technically don’t even need names. If we just start breaking their stuff, they’ll probably name us anyway.”

Sam laughs. The green on her face is gone; she likely wiped her mask off when Tucker couldn’t see. “With you hacking their stuff?”

“And you growing your freaky vines out of their gear,” Tucker added. “The…what’s the one. The one that ate that one house?”

Sam leans her head down onto Tucker’s mattress. Her clean, damp face swims into view. “Oh. The kudzu?”

“Uh huh.”

“Yeah, I can cultivate that— not here, since it grows so fast. Did you know Kudzu’s supposed to be eaten? People usually take it off the roadside in China for an easy food source. That’s why it overtakes so much stuff here: there’s no one taking on the role of its natural predator.”

Huh. Well, sounded like something Sam would know. Tucker wedged his pillow further underneath his head; Sam’s still had some goop on it, so he gave her his extra blanket instead.

Sam stuffed it underneath her head with no issue. Without her purple lip and filled in brows, she just looked like Sam— just like a girl in his class, who wanted to make the world a better place, and didn’t know how to do it.

Tucker wanted to do better too.

But they wouldn’t do it alone. They’d be better off with Danny than without.

“All we have to do is make it until Danny comes back. And then we can reconvene.”

…And then what?

“And then?” Tucker asked, a little too quiet.

Sam had never backed down from a challenge. She never would. “And then we kick ass.”

Well. When she said that, it was all so simple.

The lights clicked out in the greenhouse, and just in time— the outside started to burst with light and sound as agents tore up the road outside the Manson property.

The door was locked. The daisies at the door and the wispy strings-of-hearts would give them more than enough warning if the agents swept through.

It was bedtime, or good enough as.

Sleep wasn’t restful, but the quality of the night didn’t matter; it only had to get them to the next day.

In Which Albus Dumbledore Ruins Severus Snape's Life.

Where: Madam Malkins

Who: Open//

Severus tipped his head back against the nicotine stained wall and zapped a couple flies that were buzzing round the ceiling. It was 3AM and his insomnia was hitting him hard. A migraine was throbbing right between his eyes. They crossed as a fly buzzed particularly close to his hooked nose and he raised his wand- zap!

The more things change, Severus thought, the more they stay the same. He'd been sat on his poor excuse for a bed with it's poky springs and thin, stained, mattress since he was a boy zapping at flies in the summer. He watched a couple of them land along the edge of a brown water stain on the ceiling. They started to fuck. Severus sneered at them- little perverts. He thought about zapping them too but then he decided to have a shred of mercy and at least let them finish first. He thought also about fixing the water stain but then- why? The house was a piece of shite with all of it's piece-of-shite memories. It might as well stay that way. It's wasn't worth his effort or his magic to improve it.

Severus laid his wand aside on his leaning bedside table. The ashtray there was a chipped avocado green relic from the late '60's and was positively overflowing with cigarette butts and ash. Severus reached for his pack and his lighter. He hung a cigarette between his frowning lips and lighted it with the cracked plastic Bic. He could have well lit it with his wand but there was something more satisfying about clicking the Muggle lighter. He continued to click it idly as he smoked and grew bigger, more purpley, eye bags just for the hell of it. He blew the smoke in rings up towards the fucking flies.

Just then a tapping noise came against his window.

Severus rolled off the creaking bed and walked lazily to the window. It was the distinct tapping of an owl but who would be owling him at this time of night? Or rather, morning. Severus rubbed his eyes once and then opened the window. It wasn't an owl- it was a phoenix.

Severus was immediately on high alert. He intercepted the letter from the phoenix's ankle and motioned for it to perch on the edge of his desk while he read its offering.

My Dear Boy,

It's been quite a long night and I was just having tea before bed when I remembered I ought to owl you. I was curious if you'd seen that job opening in the Daily Prophet today. I have attached a copy of the posting and I suggest you consider it very strongly. The war may be over but the battle between Light and Dark is an ever continuing theme in the wizarding world, and in many of our lives- yours especially, I think. I really would hate for you, Severus, to get into any trouble after I've gone to such lengths to spare you from Azkaban for your original affiliations during the war. If there is any way that you might repay such kindness, dear boy, it is by keeping your nose clean. I think it would do you well to have Minerva looking after you- keeping you on your toes as it were. I believe you must grow, and you must learn, Severus, from the foolish mistakes of your not-so-distant past. And what better place to grow, and to learn, than at Hogwarts?

Severus sneered at the letter. What was the old man on about? Hogwarts? And how dare he suggest that Severus needed someone- Minerva McGonagal- to mind him as though he were a child?

Severus' black gaze darted to the Dark Arts tomes that were currently stacked, one of them opened, on the edge of his desk. Fawkes was, in fact, perched upon them as if to further highlight his perceived misdeed of studying something that most people simply misunderstood. Severus rolled his eyes and sighed.

He unrolled the copy of the Prophet which had been sent with the letter and pawed through the pages until he reached the jobs postings.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is currently accepting applications for the following positions: Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Potions. Experienced and interested persons may owl Headmistress McGonagal if interested.

Severus' migraine pounded harder.

Severus knew this 'suggestion' of Dumbledore's for what it was: an instruction. A demand. Severus wasn't meant to think it over, to ponder it and reject it because he would never, ever wish to teach a classroom full of eleven year old dunderheads. Severus, who had recently completed his Mastery in potions- and was now the youngest qualified potions Master in England- was expected to apply for the potions position, to be awarded the position, and to take it with a smile on his dour face all so Headmaster McGonagal could keep a bloody fucking eye on him.

Severus paced his little room in a seething rage.

The old man was deciding his path in life for him and he hated it. He stubbed his cigarette too hard in the ashtray, grabbed his wand, zapped the fucking flies with far too much force and blew a small hole in his ceiling.

Then, dutifully, because obviously he had no real choice in the matter, Severus sat down at his desk and using a ball point pen and a scrap of paper from a composition book, Severus wrote a quick letter.

Headmistress McGonagal,

It is I, Severus Snape. I am, against my will, applying for the Potion's position. I'll have you know that I am mean, nasty, and completely unfit for teaching. I will gladly eat quaking first years for breakfast. Do not hire me. I'm one knut short of becoming a mad man. If forced into this position I will assuredly snap.

P.S. If the old man insists that you hire me then at least consider me for the DADA position so that I might be cursed and die within the year. It will be a great relief for me and half the wizarding world can throw a real rager that that slimy, awful, Ex Death Eating scum Severus Snape has met his demise. The prat had no business teaching children anyway.

Severus practically threw Fawkes, letter attached to his ankle, out his bedroom window and into the night.

Severus got the fucking job- for Potions. His life was officially over.

Talk as he might about eating children for breakfast he was really quite full of dread at this idea of his new life as a bloody teacher. He knew from experience how horrible school children were and he was barely older than the seventh years. As it were there were students who would still remember him from school- would remember how horribly he'd been bullied and humiliated, and Severus had no desire to try and teach the little urchins especially when they'd have absolutely no respect for him. Imagine teaching a room full of Gryffindors as a known ex-Death Eater.

Severus Snape hated his life.

He came into Madam Malkin's glaring and half expecting her to throw him out- to refuse to work with 'his lot'. His black eyes practically bored holes through the kind Madam Malkin who did not throw him out on his bony arse after all.

“Teaching robes?” she said, while taking his measurements, “Merlin, but you're thin. Eat a sandwich, dear.”

Severus ignored the comment on his scrawniness.

“Teaching robes, as impossible as that is to believe,” Severus snapped, “me- they've hired me.”

“I'm sure you'll do fine,” Madam Malkin said.

“I'd like to be dressed as though I'm attending a funeral,” Severus said, rather dramatically, “my own, specifically. I want to make sure the little snots are intimidated by me. Merlin knows there won't be any other way to cow them into obedience. Brats, all of them.”

Except his snakes, of course.

“I want to look like death itself,” Severus said, still on a roll with the dramatics.

“That won't be difficult with your complexion,” Madam Malkin said, “are you sure you're well?”

“Not at all,” Severus quipped. He thought about how short he was- and how the older students would find him someone easy to run over if he doesn't nip that right away. He would need to purchase boots with heels, possibly spelled to make him appear a bit taller, and then he would learn to loom. Height be damned.

He was in a very foul mood and stewing over all of these things as Madam Malkin continued to measure him. It was then that the bell over the shop door tinkled and someone else walked in.

Grateful

Our friends are leaving today. They arrived in the states back on June 6th, but didn't start staying with us until June 14. They are going to stay with another family in Ontario, since their flight back to the midwest starts from Ontario airport.

While they are here, "they" being mom, dad and a 14 yo son, we give up our bedroom and let them stay in it, while we sleep on air mattresses in the second bedroom/studio. But whatever inconvenience it might be, I consider the trade-off worth it because of the time I get to spend with them. I took off 5 of the 9 working days they stayed here so I could just hang out and talk.

The mom is from Japan, so we tried our best to get her some Japanese food before they go back to Missouri, where apparently it's more difficult to find.

The son, who was small last time they were here four years ago, is now taller than I am. They also mentioned that it's tough to keep him fed with his growth and wanting to work out. So we made it our mission to make sure he didn't go to bed hungry.

I made some big filet mignon's the first Thursday night they were here. Then we went to my favorite pizza napoletana place, Fuoco, on Saturday with some mutual friends.

Made my tacos for them on Sunday night- which consists of homemade corn tortillas, grilled chimichurri marinated flank steak, green onion, cilantro, avocado, and some salsa. In my personal opinion, the best taco's I've ever had, but that's according to my particular tastes, so I won't guarantee everyone else thinks the same thing.

We went to a Japanese restaurant on Monday night, a Japanese Ramen restaurant on Tuesday night and the other nights they had other engagements with different people they knew.

But it was good to have them here. They will be back for two weeks after returning from the Midwest, but they have an Airbnb they're staying at for that time. Though I believe they'll be here for the last day before they head back to Cambodia, so we'll see them one more time.

We also watched 5 episodes of a Japanese comedy on Netflix. Like I said, we were trying to get mom as much Japanese as we could before she left for the midwest.

But overall, the conversations are what I'm most thankful for. I won't get that for another 2 years at least, since they alternate their yearly visits between Japan and the US. But I'm always grateful for their friendship and how much I learn from them when they're here.
