And again, another poem in English about Greek Muses. This time, I praise Urania, Muse of Astronomy and my preferred Muse. I love studying Astronomy in general (didn't go to college because I needed to work and it's a full-time course in Brazil), and I just can't simply not writing about Her. #lucavalheiro #authorialpoetry #englishpoetry #lgbtauthor #greekmythology #ancientgreece #muses #urania Image credit: Jean Louis Tocqué, "Allegoric portrait of Urania, Muse of Astronomy", 18th century, public domain. --- Urania Lu Cavalheiro (@lu.cicerone.cavalheiro) Licença CC-BY-SA 4.0 Internacional How wonderful are those stars of yours Ethereal souls shining from true past None of them meant to for eternity last Painting the dark void with many colours No words can describe the magic hours I have spent babbling about that cast Although they were gone way too fast Leaving in my memory their celestial tours Urania, my majestic Muse of Astronomy Hear my call on all those dark nights Teach me your secrets about authonomy For Yours truly is a beautiful, rare sight You share to us mortals with parcimony Making our petty lives a little more bright (em Olavo Bilac, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp7wioJrhLh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

And there we go again... Another poem in English about a Greek Muse. This time, my verses sing about Erato, Muse of love and lyric poetry. She is my second preferred Muse (after Urania), because I love lyric poetry and I find a love poem much more amusing to read than, let's say, a long epic about how a warrior killed a dragon. I know, I know, ancient Greeks were very found of epic poetry – main source of their theology is epic poetry and they considered literate only ones could recite Iliad from memory, after all –, but that isn't my cup of tea. There's a long time I haven't written anything in English. As a Brazilian, I know my country needs culture more than a lot of things – specially after four years of far-right wing on power – but I do like writing poetry in English. Shorter words and phonetic syllables means easier time for rhyming and calculating verses' metric. That said, let's look at poem itself. Calliope is the Greek Muse of eloquence and epic poetry. There's no consensus about her parents: Hesiod said Muses are daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, Titan goddess of memory, but Alcman and Mimnermus places them as daughters of Ouranos and Gaia, therefore as old as Titans themselves, at least. She isn't the sole Muse presiding over poetry: to Thalia is attributed comedy and pastoral poetry; to Melpomene, tragedy; to Erato, love and lyric poetry; and to Polyhymnia, hymns and sacred poetry – looks like ancient Greeks truly loved poetry in general. In this poem, Calliope presents herself as a Muse to a new poetess. As obvious as it sounds, I'm not talking about myself – I have a bigger preference for Erato, after all. But nothing can impede Calliope from taking a poetess' hand and write down her verses, so there I am. #lucavalheiro #authorialpoetry #englishpoetry #lgbtauthor #greekmythology #ancientgreece #muses #calliope Image credits: IA art generated by DreamStudio Lite by Lu Cavalheiro, "Woman into the Void", 2023, public domain. --- Calliope Lu Cavalheiro (@lu.cicerone.cavalheiro) Licença CC-BY SA 4.0 Internacional On all dreamscapes I've dreamt of None stands weirder than Her house A spaceless hut of solid nothingness Floating in ether – or lack of thereof She stood beautiful in a open door And offered me a warm cup of tea It sounded better of the void of sea That cold outside were standing for She told me her name but knew mine And promised I won't never be alone 'Cause her verses in me would shine She is Calliope, I am her Chosen One In waking land her verses on my spine Will flow instead thin life on my bone (em Olavo Bilac, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp6LkMILCdF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
