Social Media Tips & Resources
Tumblr media
To make the most of your social media presence as a musician, it's crucial to optimize your profiles. When you implement the following strategies, you can ensure that your profiles effectively represent your brand, and attract potential fans, and industry professionals.
🔥 Craft a compelling bio that succinctly describes your music and includes a link to your latest promotional content. Whether it's a new track, album, tour dates, merch drop, or music video, provide a direct pathway for fans to access your most recent releases.
🔥 Determine the best approach to showcase your uniqueness and artistic identity through your profile. This can involve using a consistent visual theme, color scheme, or aesthetic across your social media platforms. It doesn't have to be perfect, but when you make a memorable impression on visitors, you create a strong brand image.
🔥 Update your profile picture across all platforms and ensure it is correctly sized for each. Use a high-quality image, that captures your personality and visually represents your brand. This picture will serve as the initial introduction to your page, so make sure it conveys who you are and what you have to offer as an artist.
🔥 Verification: While not necessary at all in the beginning, (some would argue it's not necessary at all, period.), as you gain more press coverage and establish a solid presence, you can consider pursuing verification on platforms like Instagram or Twitter. Being verified with a blue tick may enhance your credibility, making it easier for fans and industry professionals to find and trust your profile.
✅ Remember, optimizing your social media profiles is an ongoing process. Regularly review and update your bio, profile picture, and overall branding to stay relevant and engaging.
✅ Present a cohesive and professional online presence, and you will increase your chances of attracting new fans, industry connections, and opportunities within the music industry.

Dear Brother | Spec Ad | Johnnie Walker (2015)
Dear Brother tells the journey of two brothers hiking the wide valleys and rugged mountains of the Scottish Highlands. A journey to the place of their youth, their home.
The ad started as a spec project made by German students Dorian & Daniel and netted more than 800,000 views in its first 24 hours back in 2015 when it was first released.
Speaking to Adweek in 2015, Dorian said, "We wanted to create an emotional film that tells the story of two brothers that go back to the most important places of their youth.
"We love to connect emotional storytelling with great cinematic pictures. So we followed the two brothers on the paths of their youth through the Scottish highlands. We tried to integrate the brand. The story itself is based on the message "Keep Walking."

The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing have announced that they will present the 2020 Tony Awards this year after all, in a digital format. Details are scarce, but here's what we know: The newly determined cutoff date will be February 19, and therefore, the last two shows to open before the shutdown, West Side Story and Girl From the North Country, will not be eligible (the reason being they didn't invite enough voters to see them), nor will Six, which was supposed to open the night theaters closed.
Still, there are 18 productions and dozens of worthy actors and designers left to get nominated in 26 categories. Here, we look at the performers from the season, and explain the various Tonys rules for categories that may not seem particularly full. For a look at the eligible shows, click here.
Best Actor in a Musical
Eligible Artists:
Chris McCarrell, The Lightning Thief Aaron Tveit, Moulin Rouge!
Yup, there are the only two eligible nominees, which is, as far as I can tell, a first for this category. The closest similarity I could find was in 1970, when three actors were nominated. There's more of a precedence in the Best Actress category — back in 1995, Glenn Close and Rebecca Luker were the only two nominees, with Close winning for Sunset Boulevard (it looks like they deliberately chose not to nominate Megan Mullally that year for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying), and before that, Gwen Verdon and Miyoshi Umeki went head to head in 1959, with Verdon winning for Redhead.
There are a few options here. They could eliminate the category, which doesn't seem too fair. They could combine it with Best Actress in a Musical and create a nongendered category, which would look admirable and progressive, two qualities that are the complete antithesis of what the Tonys have proved themselves to be year after year, so this probably won't happen.
Or, they could add two more performers who had previously been ruled as featured: Daniel J. Watts, Ike in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, and Sean Allan Krill, Steve in Jagged Little Pill. But are these leading roles? You can make more of a case for Watts than Krill, and that's where problems may arise.
So unless they revise this previous determinations, combine acting categories, or do away with the whole thing altogether, it looks like either McCarrell or Tveit, both first-time nominees, are taking home their first Tony.
Best Actress in a Musical
Eligible Artists:
Karen Olivo, Moulin Rouge! Elizabeth Stanley, Jagged Little Pill Kristin Stokes, The Lightning Thief Adrienne Warren, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical
There are a variety of Tonys rules when it comes to the number of slots in a category. If there are nine eligible nominees, there will be five slots. If there are fewer than nine, there will be four slots. But I can find nothing about four or fewer eligible nominees (see above), which leads me to believe that if the Tonys keep everything traditional, this will likely be the lineup.
But even if they do combine the Best Actor and Best Actress category, we all know who's probably going to win.
Best Actor in a Play
Eligible Artists:
Ian Barford, Linda Vista Andrew Burnap, The Inheritance Brian Cox, The Great Society Charlie Cox, Betrayal Jake Gyllenhaal, Sea Wall/A Life Tom Hiddleston, Betrayal Samuel H. Levine, The Inheritance Jonathan Pryce, The Height of the Storm Campbell Scott, A Christmas Carol Michael Shannon, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair De Lune Kyle Soller, The Inheritance Tom Sturridge, Sea Wall/A Life
With more than nine potential nominees, this category will have five slots. It's interesting to note that there are three men from The Inheritance here. Back when that was announced, everyone looked at the ruling askance: in a full season, they would probably cancel each other out. But now, all three actors from The Inheritance actually have a great chance of getting nominated.
Still, determinations for Grand Horizons and A Soldier's Play have not yet been made, and we can assume that James Cromwell (Grand Horizons) and Blair Underwood (A Soldier's Play) will land in the leading category, with David Alan Grier, who was also above the title in the latter, being placed in the featured category.
Best Actress in a Play
Eligible Artists:
Zawe Ashton, Betrayal Eileen Atkins, The Height of the Storm Joaquina Kalukango, Slave Play Audra McDonald, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair De Lune Mary-Louise Parker, The Sound Inside Marisa Tomei, The Rose Tattoo
Determinations have not been made for Grand Horizons and My Name Is Lucy Barton, but we can assume that Jane Alexander (Grand Horizons) will be placed in this category, as will Lucy Barton's sole performer, Laura Linney. Even with those two additions, this category only has eight eligible nominees, so there will only be four available slots.
The featured acting categories are where it gets dicey every year, since anyone who's not ruled as a lead can be featured. Therefore, all four featured acting categories have more than 9 potential nominees, so they will each have at least five slots (more if there are ties). Here are many of the options.
Best Featured Actor in a Musical
Eligible Artists:
Danny Burstein, Moulin Rouge! Antonio Cipriano, Jagged Little Pill Jorrel Javier, The Lightning Thief Derek Klena, Jagged Little Pill Ryan Knowles, The Lightning Thief Sean Allan Krill, Jagged Little Pill Tam Mutu, Moulin Rouge! Sahr Ngaujah, Moulin Rouge! James Hayden Rodriguez, The Lightning Thief Ricky Rojas, Moulin Rouge! Daniel J. Watts, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical
As mentioned above, Krill and Watts landed in this category automatically because they're listed below the title. Their respective producers can repetition to have them considered as lead. Without them, it's going to be a Moulin Rouge!-heavy category.
Best Featured Actress in a Musical
Eligible Artists:
Kathryn Gallagher, Jagged Little Pill Celia Rose Gooding, Jagged Little Pill Robyn Hurder, Moulin Rouge! Dawnn Lewis, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical Lauren Patten, Jagged Little Pill Sarah Beth Pfeifer, The Lightning Thief Jalynn Steele, The Lightning Thief Myra Lucretia Taylor, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical Skye Turner, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical
We can see three Jagged nominees and two from Tina to round out the category. Tough call.
Best Featured Actor in a Play
Eligible Artists:
Eddie Arnold, Betrayal Ato Blankson-Wood, Slave Play Grantham Colman, The Great Society James Cusati-Moyer, Slave Play' Emun Elliott, The Rose Tattoo Sullivan Jones, Slave Play John Benjamin Hickey, The Inheritance Paul Hilton, The Inheritance Paul Alexander Nolan, Slave Play Jim True-Frost, Linda Vista Troy West, Linda Vista
This list will exponentially grow when they make determinations for A Soldier's Play and Grand Horizons. We can expect that actors like David Alan Grier, Jerry O'Connell, Nnamdi Asomugha, Billy Eugene Jones, and McKinley Belcher III (A Soldier's Play) and Michael Urie, Maulik Pancholy, and Ben McKenzie (Grand Horizons) will fit in here. Not to mention the remaining male ensemble members of The Inheritance, The Rose Tattoo, and The Great Society.
Best Featured Actress in a Play
Eligible Artists:
LaChanze, A Christmas Carol Chalia La Tour, Slave Play Irene Sofia Lucio, Slave Play Andrea Martin, A Christmas Carol Annie McNamara, Slave Play Sally Murphy, Linda Vista Caroline Neff, Linda Vista Lois Smith, The Inheritance Chantal Thuy, Linda Vista Cora Vander Broek, Linda Vista
This category will also probably include Priscilla Lopez and Ashley Park from Grand Horizons. The nominees can go in any direction, but I'm fully expecting the legendary Lois Smith, who could very well turn 90 before these awards are actually presented (her birthday is November 3), to take home her first-ever, long-overdue Tony.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Lost Daughter’ Casts Ed Harris, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and More (EXCLUSIVE)
The full ensemble cast of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s star-studded drama “The Lost Daughter” has come into focus, as the film has just successfully wrapped production in Greece.
Ed Harris and “The Haunting of Hill House” breakout star Oliver Jackson-Cohen are among the additions to the film, Variety has learned exclusively, adapted from the acclaimed novel by Elena Ferrante. They are joined by Dagmara Dominczyk (“Succession”), Jack Farthing (“Love Wedding Repeat”) and Alba Rohrwacher (“Daughter of Mine”).
Those stars round out the previously-announced Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, Jessie Buckley and “Normal People” heartthrob Paul Mescal.
Gyllenhaal is adaptive screenwriter and director on the project, which successfully completed production amidst coronavirus shutdowns around the globe. She is producing with Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman-Keren, through their company Pie Films, and Charles Dorfman.
Endeavor Content and Dorfman, through his Samuel Marshall Productions, are the financiers, with production services from Faliro House Productions (“The Lobster,” “Before Midnight,” “The Founder”). Endeavor Content is handling worldwide sales on the project.
Harris recently starred in “Westworld” and has the upcoming “Top Gun: Maverick.” He is represented by CAA and Ziffren Brittenham. Dominczyk plays the head of public relations at Waystar Royco on “Succession”  and has starred in “The Count of Monte Cristo,” “Rock Star” and “Higher Ground.” She is represented by Industry Entertainment and Innovative Artists.
Jackson-Cohen recently starred in “The Invisible Man.” He is represented by Management 360, Hamilton Hodell and Hansen, Jacobson. Farthing is represented by Independent Talent Group. Rohrwacher is repped by UTA, Julian Belfrage Associates in the UK, Above the Line in Germany, Artmedia in France and Do MGMT in Italy.
Gyllenhaal is an Oscar-nominated actress whose credits include “Secretary,” “Sherrybaby,” and “Crazy Heart.” She most recently starred in and produced three seasons of the HBO drama “The Deuce.” Her portrayal of Candy earned her a 2018 Golden Globe nomination and a 2019 Critics Choice Award nomination. “The Lost Daughter” marks her feature directorial debut.

Black LGBTQ+ playwrights and musical-theater artists you need to know
Tumblr media
These artists are producing amazing, timely work.
By Marcus Scott Posted: Friday July 24 2020, 4:56pm
Marcus Scott is a New York City–based playwright, musical writer, opera librettist and journalist. He has contributed to Elle, Essence, Out, American Theatre, Uptown, Trace, Madame Noire and Playbill, among other publications. Follow Marcus: Instagram, Twitter
We’re in the chrysalis of a new age of theatrical storytelling, and Black queer voices have been at the center of this transformation. Stepping out of the margins of society to push against the status quo, Black LGBTQ+ artists  have been actively engaged in fighting anti-blackness, racial disparities, disenfranchisement, homophobia and transphobia.
The success of Jeremy O. Harris’s Slave Play, Donja R. Love’s one in two and Jordan E. Cooper’s Ain’t No Mo’—not to mention Michael R. Jackson’s tour de force, the Pulitzer Prize–winning metamusical A Strange Loop—made that phenomenon especially visible last season. But these artists are far from alone. Because the intersection of queerness and Blackness is complex—with various gender expressions, sexual identifiers and communities taking shape in different spaces—Black LGBTQ+ artists are anything but a monolith. George C. Wolfe, Tarell Alvin McCraney, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Robert O’Hara, Harrison David Rivers, Staceyann Chin, Colman Domingo, Tracey Scott Wilson, Tanya Barfield, Marcus Gardley and Daniel Alexander Jones are just some of the many Black queer writers who have already made marks.
With New York stages dark for the foreseeable future, we can’t know when we will be able to see live works by these artists again. It is likely, however, that they will continue to play major roles in the direction American theater will take in the post-quarantine era—along with many creators who are still flying mostly under the radar. Here are just a few of the Black queer artists you may not have encountered yet: vital new voices that are speaking to the Zeitgeist and turning up the volume.
Christina Anderson A protégé of Paula Vogel’s, Christina Anderson has presented work at the Public Theatre, Yale Repertory Theatre, Penumbra Theatre Company, Playwrights Horizons and other theaters around the U.S. and Canada. She has degrees from the Yale School of Drama and Brown University, and  is a resident playwright at New Dramatists and Epic Theatre Ensemble; she has received the inaugural Harper Lee Award for Playwriting and three Susan Smith Blackburn Prize nominations, among other honors. Works include: How To Catch Creation (2019), Blacktop Sky (2013), Inked Baby (2009) Follow Christina: Website
Aziza Barnes Award-winning poet Aziza Barnes moved into playwriting with one of the great sex comedies of the 2010s: BLKS, which premiered at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 2017 before it played at MCC Theatre in 2019 (where it earned a Lucille Lortel Award nomination). The NYU grad’s play about three twentysomethings probed the challenges and choices of Millennials with pathos and zest that hasn’t been seen since Kenneth Lonergan’s Gen X love/hate letter This Is Our Youth. Barnes is the author of the full-length collection of poems the blind pig and i be but i ain’t, which won a Pamet River Prize. Works include: BLKS (2017) Follow Aziza: Twitter
Troy Anthony Burton Fusing a mélange of quiet storm ‘90s-era Babyface R&B, ‘60s-style funk-soul and urban contemporary gospel, composer Troy Anthony has had a meteoric rise in musical theater in the past three years, receiving commissions and residencies from the Shed, Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre, Atlantic Theater Company and the Civilians. When Anthony is not crafting ditties of his own, he is an active performer who has participated in the Public Theater’s Public Works and Shakespeare In the Park. Works include: The River Is Me (2017), The Dark Girl Chronicles (in progress) Follow Troy: Instagram

Timothy DuWhite Addressing controversial issues such as HIV, state-sanctioned violence and structural anti-blackness, poet and performance artist Timothy DuWhite unnerves audiences with a hip-hop driven gonzo style. DuWhite’s raison d’être is to shock and enrage, and his provocative Neptune was, along with Donja R. Love’s one in two, one of the first plays by an openly black queer writer to address HIV openly and frankly.  He has worked with the United Nations/UNICEF, the Apollo Theater, Dixon Place and La MaMa. Works include: Neptune (2018) Follow Timothy: Instagram
Jirèh Breon Holder Raised in Memphis and educated at Morehouse College, Jirèh Breon Holder solidified his voice at the Yale School of Drama under the direction of Sarah Ruhl. He has received the Laurents/Hatcher Foundation Award and the Edgerton Foundation New Play Award, among other honors. His play Too Heavy for Your Pocket premiered at Roundabout Underground and has since been produced in cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Des Moines and Houston; his next play, ...What The End Will Be, is slated to debut at the Roundabout Theatre Company. Works include: Too Heavy for Your Pocket (2017), What The End Will Be (2020) Follow Jirèh: Twitter
C.A. Johnson Born in Louisiana, rising star C.A. Johnson writes with a southern hospitality and homespun charm that washes over audiences like a breath of fresh air. Making a debut at MCC Theater with her coming of age romcom All the Natalie Portmans, she drew praise for empathic take on a black queer teenage womanchild with Hollywood dreams. A core writer at the Playwrights Center, she has had fellowships with the Dramatists Guild Fellow, Page 73, the Lark and the Sundance Theatre Lab. Works include: All the Natalie Portmans (2020) Follow C.A.: Twitter

𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍:  art.
Henry  was  raised  during  the  high  age  of  Italy’s  Renaissance  art  and  as  such,  Henry’s  own  art  often  reflected  that  which  sought  to  capture  the  experience  of  the  individual  and  the  beauty  and  mystery  of  the  natural  world.  Henry’s  early  devotion  to  painting  saw  his  artwork  somewhat  sheltered,  a  world  seen  through  the  eyes  of  a  young  man  who  had  little  experience  in  the  real  world,  while  technically  gifted,  his  pieces  lacked  emotional  depth.
During  his  time  traveling  with  Christina,  his  artwork  saw  a  clear  growth  not  only  in  his  practiced  skill  but  in  the  feeling  that  he  was  able  to  portray  within  his  pieces.  Like  most,  Henry  admired  Da  Vinci,  Michelangelo  and  Raphael  and  his  works  often  depicted  religious  imagery,  combining  aspects  of  the  holy  and  the  sinful.  However  it  was  only  after  Christina  turned  Henry  that  his  work  began  to  take  on  shapes  and  forms  that  were  his  own.
Henry’s  Renaissance  art  would  often  be  described  as  dark,  morbid  or  disturbing,  bordering  upon  heretical  with  numerous  depictions  of  mortals  alongside  demons  and  monsters.  Yet  Henry's  work  would  also  be  described  as  enchanting  and  sensual,  walking  the  fine  lines  between  violence  and  sex.  Due  to  Henry’s  constant  movements,  as  well  as  his  later  imprisonment  by  the  Spanish  Inquisition,  few  of  his  artistic  pieces  survived  the  15th  and  16th  centuries  and  it  wasn’t  until  the  18th  century  that  Henry  revisited  his  love  for  painting.
While  his  art  technique  and  style  evolved  with  the  times,  there  would  always  be  hints  of  Renaissance  within  his  pieces  even  as  he  engrossed  himself  with  Romanticism  but  prizing  the  intuition  and  emotion,  over  rationalism.  Henry  would  begin  experimenting  with  Impressionism  which  portrayed  overall  visual  effects  instead  of  details,  and  used  short  brush  strokes  of  mixed  and  unmixed  color  to  achieve  an  affect  of  intense  color  vibration  against  a  dark  canvas.  Romanticism  would  be  one  of  his  favourite  styles  of  art  as  it  combined  realism  and  surrealism  allowing  him  to  depict  the  colours,  textures  and  emotions  that  he  experienced  and  wished  to  convey  through  his  pieces.  Henry’s  aeriel  perspective  impressionism  is  the  art  style  in  which  he  almost  always  falls  back  on  and  are  his  most  prized  pieces  that  he  rarely  allows  to  be  seen  by  the  public.
Over  the  19th  and  21st  centuries  Henry  has  experimented  with  textured  abstract  expressionism  and  combining  tenebrism  and  illustration  to  merge  his  interests  of  fine  art  and  illustration.  His  artworks  always  carry  with  it  an  undertone  of  something  almost  sinister  or  dangerous,  like  peaking  into  the  eyes  of  some  old  predator.  They  compel  a  sense  of  hypnotism  and  an  instinctual  feeling  of  danger  while  simultaneously  eliciting  feelings  of  sensuality  and  excitement.  While  his  art  style  has  shifted  and  changed  over  the  centuries,  the  feelings  his  pieces  invoke  have  not  and  Henry  finds  it  highly  amusing  whenever  critics  compare  his  recent  pieces  to  his  older  pieces  under  different  alliases.
Henry  prefers  to  work  with  oil  paints  as  the  textures  and  the  ability  to  change  and  shift  his  work  at  will  before  finalizing  it  on  his  own  terms  rather  than  on  the  drying  of  the  paint  is  preferable  but  he  does  dabble  in  charcoal  art  and  abstract  portraiture  that  is  his  most  sought  after  pieces  of  work  in  present  time.
For  visual  representations  of  Henry’s  art  style/vibe  consider  :
15-17th  century,  Artemisia  Gentileschi  and  Giovanni  Baglione
18-19th  century,  Samuel  Colman  and  John  Martin
19th-21st  century,  Nicola  Samori  and  Eric  Lacombe

New Post has been published on http://literaryends.com/hgblog/oscars-2021/
Oscars 2021
There wasn’t a chance I was going to try and prediction nominations this year given all the rules changes and expanded eligibility rules (no screen release necessary). Heck, even the Hollywood Stock Exchange (HSX) didn’t bother to hold their annual trading on the nominations. But, now that they are in, I’m willing to try and predict winners.
While there were some odd gaps and snubs, there are some nicely competitive categories. The big question is how much Netflix-hate and politics will play into the results. With rare exception, there are few winners that could be selected that wouldn’t be worthy in the following lists, but when choosing “the best” things always get a little dicey.
And with that preamble, here are my first impressions and some thinking out loud. I’ll post a final call before the night as per tradition.
Actress in a Leading Role
Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman) Frances McDormand (Nomadland) Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman)
What a great range of talent and styles…which only makes prediction that much harder. However Frances McDormand has been buzzed about for months now. And while Davis and Day delivered amazing performances, Mulligan is still my favorite for the levels and tightrope. Only Day challenges it for me, but she had less of a plot to work with some ways. My guess is still McDormand.
Actor in a Leading Role
Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) Anthony Hopkins (The Father) Gary Oldman (Mank) Steven Yeun (Minari)
Boseman, regardless of performance, is likely to get this on the upswell of loss alone. For me, Oldman was the more complete and believable character and performance.
Actress in a Supporting Role
Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy) Olivia Colman (The Father) Amanda Seyfried (Mank) Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari)
Yuh-Jung Youn stole Minari. And Seyfried was luminescent in Mank. I’d bet on Seyfried if Minari didn’t have such growing support and if we all didn’t need such a good laugh (which Youn delivers). Colman was wonderful, but her performance doesn’t quite gel without the rest of the ensemble, by design. And though Bakalova has been gathering accolades, she’s much younger than Youn and has “plenty of time” in the voter’s eyes to prove herself.
Actor in a Supporting Role
Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7) Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) Leslie Odom, Jr (One Night in Miami) Paul Raci (Sound of Metal) Lakeith Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah)
There is no good answer here. Cohen truly captured Hoffman in a way that deserves to walk away with the statuette. But Odom navigates a complex problem with savvy and Stanfield delivers an oily and complex man with conviction. As much as I’d like this to go to Cohen on the merits, I think Odom is the likely winner here.
Adapted Screenplay
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm The Father Nomadland One Night in Miami The White Tiger
There is no perfect choice in this group. All have their challenges. One Night in Miami is probably the front-runner, though there may be a surprise in here.
Original Screenplay
Judas and the Black Messiah Minari Promising Young Woman Sound of Metal The Trial of the Chicago 7
Again a great list, but Promising Young Woman was the most impressive of this list for me, especially as a first feature. However, Trial may get this due to Sorkin love (and not undeservedly).
Directing
Another Round, Thomas Vinterberg Mank, David Fincher Minari, Lee Isaac Chung Nomadland, Chloé Zhao Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell
Best Picture
The Father Judas and the Black Messiah Mank Minari Nomadland Promising Young Woman Sound of Metal The Trial of the Chicago 7
There are times I’m glad it isn’t up to me. There is no question that Nomadland is the front-runner, whether it should be or not. For the record, I don’t think it should be in this list. Mank is by far the best crafted and fully complete vision delivered. Promising Young Woman is the most surprising and delicately crafted. The Father is unique and clever. Judas and Trial are incredible windows into events and people of the past. Sound of Metal and Minari are peeks into worlds you most likely aren’t familiar with. But Nomadland has somehow grabbed the attention. It may still fall to split votes or political tides, but of this list, it is among the weakest films in my opinion.
International Feature
Another Round (Denmark) Better Days (Hong Kong) Collective (Romania) The Man Who Sold His Skin (Tunisia) Quo Vadis, Aida? (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Another Round is the most familiar title, but Collective and Skin are currently gaining recognition. I’m hoping to see them all before the day of reckoning, but for now I’m going with Another Round based solely on press and buzz.
Original Song
“Fight For You” (Judas and the Black Messiah) “Hear My Voice” (The Trial of the Chicago 7) “Husavik” (Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga) “Io Sì (Seen)” (The Life Ahead (La Vita Davanti a Se)) “Speak Now” (One Night in Miami)
I honestly just don’t care enough to have an opinion yet. Suspect, though, that it will be Fight For You or Speak Now.
Original Score
Da 5 Bloods, Terence Blanchard Mank, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Minari, Emile Mosseri News of the World, James Newton Howard Soul, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste
Soul is the score to beat, no pun intended. All were solid, but Soul’s already snagging awards for its score and that is likely to continue, and is certainly worthy.
Documentary Feature
Collective Crip Camp The Mole Agent My Octopus Teacher Time
Don’t know enough yet here to discuss the possible outcomes.
Documentary Short Subject
Colette A Concerto Is a Conversation Do Not Split Hunger Ward A Love Song for Latasha
Don’t know enough yet here to discuss the possible outcomes.
Live Action Short Film
Feeling Through The Letter Room The Present Two Distant Strangers White Eye
Don’t know enough yet here to discuss the possible outcomes.
Animated Feature Film
Onward Over the Moon A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon Soul Wolfwalkers
All entertaining, but Soul is the walkaway here. It is a full look at a difficult subject, done in an inventive and effective way.
Animated Short Film
Burrow Genius Loci If Anything Happens I Love You Opera Yes-People
Don’t know enough yet here to discuss the possible outcomes.
Cinematography
Judas and the Black Messiah, Sean Bobbitt Mank , Erik Messerschmidt News of the World, Dariusz Wolski Nomadland , Joshua James Richards The Trial of the Chicago 7, Phedon Papamichael
Judas, News, and Trial are all cut from the similar cloth of classic cinematography. Judas and Trial also have the added skill of mixing in historical or seemingly historical footage. All are done very well. But Nomadland and Mank are more stylistic and more characters within the story. Mank is, by far, the most impactful delivery of the group, and the most artistic, but I am not sure that it can overcome its stream-only origins. I can also see Judas walking with this as a consolation prize.
Film Editing
The Father Nomadland Promising Young Woman Sound of Metal The Trial of the Chicago 7
The Father and Promising Young Woman are neck and neck for me in this category. Nomadland was very harsh in its edits, causing the flow to falter rather than flow. Trial has some clever editing to tell the story, but it felt more driven by the necessities of the script than the editor. Father may get this if folks don’t want to give it Production Design. Nomadland is likely to take it as part of its potential tsunami.
Production Design
The Father Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Mank News of the World Tenet
You couldn’t have put together a list of more different films that relied on their production design, and all done excellently. Three are period pieces, but Mank is highly stylized, while Ma Rainey’s and News are more invisible. But The Father tells its story through the production design and Tenet creates an entire world and mythos. Honestly, The Father should get this, but Tenet may get this as one of its few opportunities for the gang of Nolan.
Costume Design
Emma Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Mank Mulan Pinocchio
Ma Rainey’s, hands down for me, for the range of economics and cultures it covered. As wonderful as Mank’s were, the Black and White aspect mutes the magic of what was done. Mulan was just a bit too forced, as was Emma, though that latter would typically win this category.
Visual Effects
Love and Monsters The Midnight Sky Mulan The One and Only Ivan Tenet
Yeah, Tenet. No question.
Makeup and Hairstyling
Emma Hillbilly Elegy Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Mank Pinocchio
Mank. Makeup and hair for black and white photography is a bear and this was done flawlessly and on a huge scale.
Sound
Greyhound Mank News of the World Soul Sound of Metal
As wonderful as Soul is, Sound of Metal uses sound (beyond just the music) as more of an essential character and story element. It also is one of its few chances this year, so think this may be where it gets its nod.
NOMINATIONS BY FILM
Provided just for reference, but certainly interesting to consider when considering who has the attention of the voters. Only films with 2 or more noms are listed.
