Just finished reading this book A History of the World in 100 Objects by Neil MacGregor, and now I’m going to have to make a pilgrimage to the British Museum. This book uses 100 objects from their collection to forensically carve out new truths about human history to reveal a world that is quite different from the perspectives taught in school, particularly in regard to finance, community, trade and population. This book has reawakened my love for museum studies. #arthistory #arthistorynerd #arthistorybabes #arthistorystudent #arthistorysnap #arthistorymajor #arthistoryjokes #arthistorytraveler93 #arthistorynerdalert #arthistorymemes #arthistorylesson #arthistoryforkids #arthistoryfeed #arthistorydog #arthistorycourse #arthistoryclass #arthistoryapplied (at British Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj53cjHOaau/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Did you know... Lemons 🍋 have been in portraits since the 15th century with varied symbolism. Christians viewed them as a symbol of fidelity. Citrus fruits in general represented marriage and love. However, lemons have often been used in still life paintings throughout the centuries. Early on, they were seen as a symbol of wealth and luxury. It wasn't until the 1400s when there is documented evidence of Central European trade routes which involved exotic fruits. They were once a luxury only made available to royalty, but were still an expensive commodity even into the 1800s. So next time you see lemons in an early still life painting, remember the painter is basically pointing to his baller status lmao. #🍋 #arthistory #arthistorylesson #historiadelarte #art #lemons #lemons🍋 #stilllife #selfie #selfienation #loveyourself

This comes from dangling from the ceiling– I'm goitered like a Lombard cat (or wherever else their throats grow fat)– it's my belly that's beyond concealing, it hands beneath my chin like peeling. My beard points skyward, I seem a bat upon its back, I've breasts and splat! On my face the paint's congealing. Loins concertina'd in my gut, I drop an arse as counterweight and move without the help of eyes. Like a skinned martyr I abut on air, and, wrinkled, show my fat. Bow-like, I strain toward the skies. No wonder then I size things crookedly; I'm on all fours. Bent blowpipes send their darts off-course. Defend my labor's cause, good Giovanni, from all strictures: I live in hell and paint its pictures.
Michelangelo Buonarroti, in describing how difficult it was standing to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling. (And no, according to his recounts, he did not lay down to paint it. Charlton Heston did, Michelangleo didn't.)
