my three self-insert-adjacent kids! love the symmetrical ruler. charlie’s eyes are so fucking big here, this was supposed to be a little stylized/exaggerated and they DO have big eyes but my god. it’s too late i’m not going back and fixing them

anyway, talking about them all under the cut

i haven't talked about them HERE yet is the thing so here we fucking go. i think this first post will primarily be origins plus design talk, and i'll reblog this another time with personality discussion.

so as we know, charlie started off purely as my avatar to use in video games, when i wanted to play a game the way I'D make decisions without actually playing myself. so like first runs for new games before i get into 'okay now i understand this universe and want to make an OC that actually fits' territory or 'okay now i want to play this other OC in this universe' territory. my first design for them was this doll maker thing below from 2018!

i don't know where their heterochromia went and i'm a bit too attached to the blue eyes now but i've been considering bringing it back. it's a fun design. but, again, going back to their original purpose as VG Kid, not every character creator is going to let me give them different colored eyes, so that's challenging. HOWEVER... i did venture away from that somewhat. charlie has grown into their own thing outside of a simple stand-in for myself. a lot of their growth started with playing them in outer worlds and cyberpunk, as i started developing them for AUs for those worlds. nowadays i do still see charlie as kind of a self-insert, but more than anything they're just a kid of mine.

here's some older art of them!

drawn in 2019, these are the first saved drawings i have of charlie. the intention behind these was that i wanted to make some comics about experiences i've had without just drawing myself, and charlie made sense to do for that. i never ended up actually trying out that project but! charlie got their start here. the three-dot freckles were there from the start. despite the monochrome palette here, they were intended to have brown hair like i do, which is why charlie's hair is naturally brown and they just bleach it. REALLY weird seeing them with tits tbh but again, they were just a stand-in here, and i had tits at the time, though in the first one they're wearing a binder.

drawn in 2020, getting a bit closer to their current design. once i added color i immediately forgot the heterochromia in favor of the bright blue eyes. their outfit is supposed to be reminiscent of a sunflower here but i like that i'm associating them with yellow this early on.

feb 2021, basically charlie's current design here! plus sunny, their crimesona in gta au. i got rid of the ombre tips and visible roots pretty quick for simplicity's sake. the arrangement of their ear piercings changes all the time because i constantly forget if it's two up top or two on the bottom, but the piercings aren't Critical to their design imo.

moving onto parker and the first time i drew them

march 2021, drawn as a companion piece to a cyberpunk charlie headshot i did. i can't exactly pin down when/why i made them, though their creation came shortly before my second run of cyberpunk and i found comments i made about them accidentally being 2P charlie. so since that's an early idea i had that i ran with, that's bascially their start. it's fine. anyway yeah parker is 2P charlie, meaning i used charlie as a base of reference and went the 'opposite' in a lot of traits. they were also intended early on as being a possible video game second run kid, like i did with them in cyberpunk.

their design hasn't changed too much from the start. short black hair, deeper/darker blue eyes than charlie, same eye bags that charlie had gotten by that point. resting sad face.

they got lip and eyebrow piercings here, though that's also something i forget to add sometimes.

see, forgot the piercings here, though this is hunger games AU so i can argue that they'd be less likely to get them at that age/in that situation? anyway. the strands of hair around their ears turned into those little tufts at some point.

finally, rhys!

rhys went through some design changes, which we'll get into. they were intended as a 3P charlie from the start, which has... more nebulous rules than a 2P kid, in my mind. basically rhys is still a self-insert, but while charlie became more idealized, rhys is more... average? rhys is just a dude. charlie's very much a protag, while rhys is intended to be closer to a normal person. as well as having more of a balance of my positive and negative traits, where charlie gets mostly positive and parker get a lot of negative. i also made rhys to smooch the daycare attendant in fnaf security breach so there's that bit of lore.

ANYWAY design! moving away from blue eyes to gray, since mine have been described as both. rhys was also more masc-presenting to start, and had been further along their T journey.

emphasized the little bit of hair at the top more, still keeping the facial hair at this point but getting a feel for their style. which IS similar to charlie's, but less likely to show skin. rhys is also more likely to be seen in regular-ass clothes with a few wild outfits thrown in. i consider charlie a fashion kid where rhys just has a couple Fun Looks, y'know?

decided i didn't like the short hair so started trying out longer hair. they also got the hair tufts by the ears here. can't get away from drawing hair tufts, they're just FUN DESIGN

and got rid of the facial hair here. it was partly because it wasn't fitting in this particular drawing for me, and also because i decided i wanted rhys to more follow my transition journey rather than be ahead of it. i'll experiment with them more as things go along for me.

I'm working on the Nameless books and it's going very well but I've run into a problem 🤔ᴴᴹ what shall I name Nameless for the very end of the game, where Eri finally remembers his name? Because I'd like to keep it as accurate to the original game as much as humanly possible. But the only name that Nameless has is either Bear or the one that the player gives him. To my knowledge, there isn't actually a canonical name given to Nameless, but I feel it wouldn't do the game justice without including the scene in which Eri remembers Nameless' name. So I've come up with a few options:

Option 1: I go with the name I gave Nameless when I first played the game. The pros of this are that it is Nameless' name that I did give him. A downside of this is that my first doll was a baby girl so he's got a girl's name 🤔ᴴᴹ it might suit him tbh tho, idk

Option 2: I choose a name which had something to do with his name in the game files: Bear. Maybe the Korean word for bear or a different name that means bear or something..

Option 3: A name that means Nameless/empty/etc

Option 4: A name that references him being Eri's first doll, so something that means "first" or "original" or "eldest"

Option 5: My personal favourite - a name that calls back to him being a teddy bear but not just calling him straight up bear. Do you know the origins of the teddy bear? I explain:

Former president Theodore Roosevelt was once out hunting but couldn't find any bears to hunt. A bear was caught for him and tied up for him to shoot, but Roosevelt refused to shoot it.

This story reached the news and Clifford Berryman made a comic about it:

A toy maker saw this comic and, inspired, made "Teddy's Bear", the first teddy bear!

This is the story of the teddy bear. After the first one was made, it became very popular and was mass produced and so now we all love teddy bears today!

So I thought that for Nameless, I could name him something that references the origin of teddy bears, Teddy Roosevelt's name - something like Theo or Rue

I don't really know if I'd go with the name Theo since I want it to be accurate to the original game and I'm not sure if a Korean kid would name their teddy something like that? So I thought of changing it to Teo but we already have both a Teo in a different game and a Tei in this game so I don't really like that..

But I do really really like the idea of calling him Rue instead

Option 6: This is one that I've just thought of, as I was writing this post. I could choose a name that doesn't reference him specifically but something else of importance in the Cheritz games; such as Angel or Dandelion or the name of a character from a different game or something referencing Eri's grandpa/family or even the Wizard. I really like the sound of Angel tbh, the number 1004 occurs a couple times across the games

Option 7: I dig deeper into the game and find out if he has any other sort of canonical name.. Perhaps there's concept art of him with a different name? There's not much I can really do in the way of this but if anyone knows anything that might elude to a name of his I would love to hear it

Option 8: I ditch the whole idea and leave the scene.. Nameless is nameless, that's kind of the point of him, and it'd be a slight injustice to him to give him one specific name when the fact that he doesn't have one means that he is a beautiful blank slate for individual players to project their own childhood toy onto. I wouldn't really like to do this but it is an option

Option 9: Something I haven't even thought of yet. Pls help. Struggling. 😅 I'm really leaning towards Rue, Angel or Dandelion/something similar but am definitely open to suggestion!!! Persuade me!!!! ^^

1: What was your first cosplay?

Irene Adler from Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia (badly done tbh).

2: Favorite thing to cosplay?

Harley Quinn and Star Wars villains/antiheroes. Complex characters in general, especially ones that require some acting.

3: Have you ever been in a panel at a convention?

I wish!

4: How many people do you think you met because of cosplaying?

Pretty much everyone I know and, like, all of my friends except one or two.

5: What do you think makes a ‘good cosplay’?

Passion for the character and the costume. Attention to detail. Spending time on it because that is how you really get into it. Not being an asshole to people around you, especially less experienced or poor cosplayers.

6: Have a cosplay blog?

Your standing in it, ha.

7: Ever done a group cosplay?

Yes! You can find them in my *group cosplay tag.

8: Couple’s cosplay?

9: When did you start cosplaying?

2011. But dressing up has always been one of my favourite things to do.

10: Would you consider yourself good at cosplaying?

I have grown a lot as a cosplayer & costume maker and at this point, I would say: yes, I’m good at it.

11: Which cosplay took you the longest time to make?

The Winter Soldier.

12: Shortest time to make?

The first 24-hour-version of Endor!Leia that I am currently remaking.

13: Do you like Genderbent/AU cosplays?

Depends. I like genderfluid cosplays, where it’s like … basically you just don’t bind and maybe change a few things, but you don’t make it sexy to make it feminine or change from pants to a skirt or put boobplates on things. I think cosplay always also should be about feeling comfortable and if you don’t like to “crossdress” then you shouldn’t have to. There are also more overtly genderbent cosplays that are fine because they show creativity and the ability to adapt things and reinterpret them. I don’t like the term genderbent because it’s pretty cissexist, and I genuinely do like to think of gendebents as basically trans headcanons? So within that realm I like them, I just don’t like the often transphobic and misogynist connotations that a lot of genderbent versions carry. So it really depends on the cosplayer and I personally do them rarely.

With alternate universes it also depends. On the one hand, it gives you a lot of freedom to make up your own stuff. On the other, you usually have to work harder to make sure your costume is still recognizable as the character you’re portraying. The general rule of thumb is that if I like the AU, I probably also like the AU cosplay. I mostly enjoy to make them though with characters that are very recognizable due to certain tropes & symbols, and characters that already exist in many versions in canon.

14: List all of your cosplays.

That is a pretty long list. I’m gonna put a link if you really wanna read it.

15: Are you currently working on something?

I finished Harley (except that I still come up with stupid trinkets to add), so now I am only working on Leia! After that I will start on Revan, I hope.

16: Would you, if given the chance, cosplay at school/work?

Eeeeeeh, tough question. I don’t think so, since I like to keep my work and private life seperate and cosplay is pretty private to me. My colleagues know about it and I’ve shown them a few pictures, but arriving at work in full cosplay is a whole different deal.

17: Do any of your IRL friends cosplay?

Most of them either do or did.

18: What does your family think of it?

I hope that at this point they are quite positive about it. My mum seems to understand it is basically the equivalent of me dressing up as a kid and that it’s harmless and fun and a good outlet for me. I know my brother once accused me of losing my grip on reality, but I explained it to him and I suppose he understands now? In general it’s one of those things they just take as me being a weird person with weird hobbies and that’s okay because it’s true tbh.

19: Do you consider cosplay an art?

Definitely!!

20: Have you ever had to get help with a cosplay?

I use all kinds of tutorials and often ask my cosplayer friends for advice. They have also helped me before with cutting my wigs, doing my make-up and other stuff I’m not so great at. I have received a lot of help especially from @agent-without-ok-days and @mimicrysquid, who are both incredibly talented and sweet.

21: Least favorite thing to cosplay?

I don’t understand this question. If I don’t like it, I don’t cosplay it.

22: Ever been in a cosplay contest?

I’m too self-conscious and I often lack the time to enter, but I really would like to.

23: First con that you cosplayed at?

Sherlocon 2011.

24: What’s your definition of ‘cosplay’?

Asdjhjsdfghfjdf, god, wow, that is? Really hard?? Uuuuuhhhh … if I have to explain it to others, I usually say something like “It’s where you dress up as characters from media and then take pictures together and maybe act out small scenes and basically just have a good time together”. As for what it means for me personally, I think it is the perfect combination of crafts and performance art; it’s a great creative outlet and a way to meet like-minded people, and what I like about it most that others interact directly with your art. You’re not on a stage or uploading music to the internet or putting a picture in a museum. You get to carry something special into a mundane, everyday setting and people get to experience it first-hand and it just makes normal events a bit more extraordinary.

25: Favorite tumblr cosplay ask blog?

I like @cosplay-refs quite a lot.

26: Ever cosplay an inanimate object?

I don’t think I have, but I would if the option presented itself and I had a good idea.

27: Who is your cosplay headcanon of your favorite character?

That would have to mean I have a singular favourite character and a singular headcanon about them, which I don’t.

28: What is your ‘Cosplay First Aid Kit’ (what you use to repair a cosplay)?

A small sewing kit (thread, needles, scissors), different types of glue and tape, samples of the paint I used for the costume, replacement buttons/sequins/whatever is stuck on there, stain remover. I usually forget something important though.

29: Would you go pro?

I don’t think that is a reasonable option with my bad health (and lack of fame).

30: Who is your favorite professional cosplayer?

I’m not sure if any of the cosplayers I like are “professional”, and I am not a big fan of most of the really huge names in the community (you know, like the ones on that cosplay TV show). But here’s some more or less influential faves that I follow on Facebook:

I thought for sure the second kill would be to keep Angie quiet about the culprit, so it’d make more sense for it to be the same one. But maybe Shinguuji just doesn’t care if they vote for the wrong person and they all die???

I think I understand Ouma’s role much better now. He’s the annoying kid who’s going to seem misleading and a liar, but is lowkey pointing everyone’s attention to what is important in a very backwards way (that works mostly)
