Arisia 2023 marked my return to in-person con-going after a three-year plague hiatus. While I found Arisia 2021 to be a strong effort at a virtual edition of my favorite con, it was still a relief to be in the same physical space with my fellow panelists and the audience, this weekend.

I had the honor of being on GoH Andrea Hairston’s Wakanda Forever panel on Sunday morning, and it was the sort of panel one dreams about as a program participant: a stimulating, informed conversation amongst experts in diverse facets of the topic, and an engaged, passionate audience from whom we received some truly productive and thoughtful questions and comments.

On Sunday evening, I had the pleasure of being on the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4: Too Much of a Good Thing? panel, which also featured a lively conversation and great audience, and both panels left me thinking on the journey home today about where our conversations could have gone had we more time on the spot. 

For now, I simply want to acknowledge how many present were making our first return to a social sphere that was important in our lives, pre-pandemic, and how weighty that return felt. It was wonderful to see familiar faces, and exchange long-awaited hugs, and to attempt to resume rituals that felt at once familiar and wholly strange, with time elapsed and precautions observed. I hope all of us found our grooves by the end. I know that I was feeling a little rusty about the whole business throughout, but it seemed like our collective enthusiasm for assembling in this community again helped smooth a lot of ways. If I missed you, I hope I see you next time.
