okay what's up my malina stans
more naming headcanons (+kid headcanons??) because i know if the love of my life and i were both in need of new names, i would really, really over think it (+I just love coming up with kids names).
When they realize they have to change their names, Misha at first tries to come up with their names. And as sweet as it is, they don't actually use them because who in their right mind would let a little kid pick out their names?
---
Alina hasn't got a clue what name to pick. None of the names she thinks of feels like it suits her. Svetlana? Melania? Ingrid? She was given the name Alina by her parents and she hates to part with it.
So she keeps asking Mal for his opinion, but he's not very helpful because he's just like "Well, what if I just call you my dearest and my love and sweetheart for the rest of your life?" and she's like "MAL THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WHO MIGHT NEED TO ADDRESS ME, YA KNOW?" (which he doesn't quite believe).
But it's her name, and Mal just wants to let her her to pick it so that it's hers. But she keeps asking him anyway because she wants his opinion. And maybe a part of her wants him to help name her because then the name will feel more special. Not just that she picked a random name, but that it was given to her and belongs to her. Belonging is important to Alina.
So she casually suggests a bunch of names just to test them and she lets Mal scrunch his nose at a few because she's not really a Tanya or an Oksana to him--but he insists, whatever she picks is fine by him as he will still be calling her "beloved."
Anyway, she hears the name Karine (Care-een) while they are travelling to wherever at the end of R&R. And she quite likes it, but she's not 100% sure. But Mal thinks it's a pretty name and it suits her. Except they both agree it's prettier with an A at the end, and close enough to honor her given name. So she becomes Karina.
The name and variants of it have several possible meanings including "sweet", "dear one/beloved friend", and "pure/without shame" ...All of which applies to her wonderfully.
But to Mal, she is still "my heart" and "cherished"
---
Mal does actually intend to use the name Misha chose because he's a big softie. And because "hey Dmitri isn't such a bad name, really. It kinda suits me."
But the first time Alina has to call him by his new name in front of someone, she starts to call him Mal and stops at "Ma-" and that's when she calls him Maks. As soon as they're alone, he teases her about it.
"MAKS?!" "I panicked. What was I supposed to do? pretend I forgot your name is supposed to be Dmitri? How obvious did you want me to be?" "How about saying 'this is m...y husband, Dmitri?" "Husband?" "Well, not yet, obviously." (she grins) "...but we are travelling together and trying not to draw attention." "I could call you my brother." "Don't you dare. We might gets stares if you start saying that and then I do this." (he bends to kiss her, she concedes the point) "The point is you didn't have to come up with Maks." "Just think of it as like.... MAXimum. The most. That's you. You're superlative. The best of the best." "Superlative? Yeah? I kinda like that. Maybe I'll keep it." (He did.)
---
For their wedding vows, they realize they need to pick out middle names and a last name.
They play around with anagrams of their last names, trying to come up with something vaguely related to a meadow). They can't quite settle on something like Orzekov or Orzemov (zem coming from zemlya meaning land, referring to the meadow? idk) or Olenski (Olen meaning deer). Or maybe something like Kuyanova in honor of Ana Kuya. Then Mal asks her if he could give her the middle name Mila, meaning "gracious and dear", and she agrees. Her full name literally means "sweet/unashamed/beloved friend, gracious and dear." which is exactly what he wants her to know he sees in her. And he knows the name change is a bit hard on Alina (she already had one identity crisis learning to be a Grisha, so she likes familiarity with herself) so he absolutely lavishes the full name on her, making it become precious. Karina Mila is now like a pet name. Beauty, beloved, cherished, my heart, Karina Mila.
Alina then returns the favor and gives him the middle name Klemont, because it means "merciful and gentle." Making his full name Maks Klemont, "the greatest of men, merciful and gentle." The meaning is dear to her too... but she would still prefer to call him Mal. Because to her, the simple name Mal is the most comforting, heartwarming word on earth. The beauty is in the simplicity of recognizing her best friend as he is and all the meaning encompassed in one simple name.
Because it's so important that the new names stick without any slip-ups, they make a strict rule to only use their new names, even in their own home. And over time, Maks and Karina Mila become natural and familiar names to them.
But every now and then when they are the very most alone, in their most intimate moments, he lets himself whisper "Alina" so that she never forgets he sees her and knows her better than anyone else. And every so often she whispers back "Mal" to remember where they come from and how long she has loved him.

BONUS! Kids head canon!
They adopt Misha of course, but they also have twins!
Anatoli Viktor ("sunrise, victory") is the oldest. He sometimes goes by "Tol" and he likes to read and learn how to build things with his hands. He's not rude, and in fact his heart is quite kind, but he is not much of a talker. He loves to read scientific theory and then put it to practice. He is a bit too neat and tidy to love hunting trips with Mal, but he appreciates the knowledge. No one knows it, but part of Mal's heritage passed on to him. Not the tracking powers nor second life, but the latent ability to amplify a Grisha's power.
his twin sister is Anastacia Dora ("new life, gift"). She goes by Stacia most of the time. She's very friendly and outgoing like Mal in the first books, full of life. She loves to explore and enjoys going on hunting trips with her dad. But she loves playing with and helping the kids at the orphanage too. She has such a big heart. She actually wants to be the headmistress at the school someday, or at least a teacher. She's a born leader, charismatic and passionate and loving.
the youngest is Evania Vera ("peaceful faith"). Or simply Vania. She is the fairychild. She loves drawing and writing songs, singing out in the meadow while she is collecting herbs and flowers all alone. She's the sweetest creature the world has ever seen. She can't bear to go on hunting trips with her father, although she loves to go on walks in the woods with him. And she is a Grisha healer, although she is given the option not to go to the Little Palace, and she chooses not to until she is older and wants to train so she can save lives.
if anyone is interested......... I can do potential kid pics. :) :) :)
No, I'm not even obsessed with this. Not at all. This is perfectly normal :) :) :)
