sunwoo x reader
wc. 5k warnings: medical inaccuracies, death, illness, hospitals, overall just a pretty heavy piece genre can only be described as an absolute mess inspired mainly by san junipero but also slightly by charlie kaufman and wong kar wai
a/n: this is supposed to be told nonlinearly but like the creation of it was very messy so i have no clue if it actually worked, so good luck trying to make this piece make sense of this :)

act iii. scene iii.
Sunwoo sits and watches the sun shift from pink and blue to an impossible shade of green. And it’s then he knows that without a doubt Clara has ruined the color green for him. Because instead of marveling at the color of the sky, Sunwoo is reminded of the doors in her apartment building.
“Thought I might find you here.” The voice of a stranger who Sunwoo loved once upon a time says behind him. He tries like hell not to turn around. Not to lean back towards the voice and wait for your hand on his shoulder or your shin knocking familiarly against his back. He focuses on the waves crashing below instead. The roar of the water beneath him is deafening, but only if you let it be. He does, and he almost forgets that you’re behind him.
“Where’d you go?” You ask, now sitting next to him, tugging at the long grass.
“I’m right here.”
“And what about in there?” You bring a finger up and poke at the side of his forehead.
He turns to you, facing you in full. He takes in your features like it’s the first time all over again. And, oh, he wishes he knew before how many firsts you already had together. This is just another. This is just the first time he’s seen you in the past six months and remembered the thousands of times he’s seen your face before.
He studied your cheeks. The one he now recalls running the back of his palm over after you left for the Cloud.
He memorizes, for the millionth time, your eyes. He used to swear they were darker than they are, but then he saw them in the sun. He was dying back then; then he saw your eyes and you saved him. Just like that.
Mr. Choi was right of course. As he always must be. You and him are like an old married couple. Not like. You are. Almost were.
“I had lunch with Mr. Choi today.” He tells you.
You squint at him. “I know. It’s Thursday.” You pull out a piece of the grass. “What’d he make?”
“Ramen.”
“Was it good?”
“It was okay.”
“Too spicy?”
Suwnoo answers with a sigh, looking away from you and back towards the water. The deafening waves crash against the cliffside. “I know you looked at your file.” He finally says. You stop pulling at the grass. You still. “Mr. Choi told me.”
After he says it, there’s a silence that isn’t actually silent at all. The waves rage below his feet. The seagulls are there too, beneath, above, somewhere, everywhere. And then, of course, there’s you and Sunwoo, trying to be silent over the static in your heads and the machines you’re hooked up to in a universe far far away.
“Did he tell you about my file?”
He looks at you again. “No.”
“Oh.” You look away, brows furrowed, lick your lips, and then turn back to him. “So why are you upset?”
“After he told me, I went and I…”
“You didn’t.”
“I looked at mine.”
There’s another silence, except that this time it really is quiet. Sunwoo read once whilst in a rabbit hole of medical research that true silence only happens in a vacuum, where there is no medium for sound waves to travel through. This must be that. This place, the files, Mr. Choi and Mr. Chan, Clara and her apartment building full of green doors--it’s a vacuum. And they stick people in it then call it the Cloud. They call it extra time. But it isn’t. It’s nothing and he’s stuck in the middle of it. So Sunwo stares at you, straight through the vacuum of time and space you’re both lost in, waits for you to say something, and then waits for himself to hear it.
“You looked?” You finally say, voice folding in on itself.
“Yes.” Sunwoo’s own voice is barely there. You must be reading his lips which you’ve always been good at anyways.
“So you know now?”
“I always knew, and now, I remember.”
Tumblr media
act i. scene iv.
There’s been an accident.
That’s what they say when the sun falls out of the sky and the world starts spinning in the wrong direction. It’s how they show up at Sunwoo’s door painted in shades of blue and red, with authority in their arms and hands on their hips. How they prepare him for the looming moment where they rip past his skin, blood, bone to shoot a gun straight at his heart. I’m so sorry for your loss, they say leaving him with a bullet lodged somewhere between his left and right atrium.
And those are the four words that play over and over and over in Sunwoo’s head as he gets to the hospital. Those are the words that crawl inside his open chest and turn him blue and black with infection. There’s been an accident, he remembers, staring at the extraordinary measures taken to keep your heart beating and lungs beating. This is it. Except that the accident isn’t that you’re dying, but that you’re dying. It’s always supposed to have been him. He’s supposed to be the one stuffed with tubes and hooked up to monitors, the one whose life is hanging on by a thread, and you’re supposed to be the one that saves him. It all feels like a play that’s gone horribly wrong because everyone switched parts after intermission without telling him. At what point did you steal the role of dying protagonist from him?
We did everything we could, a stranger in a white coat says. Except that it’s not some stranger, it’s your colleague and co-worker because this is the hospital you work at and the hospital Sunwoo met you in. There was too much damage to the brain, they explain as the image of their tear-stricken face goes from your friend during intern year to the doctor who operated on you as your brain went dead.
“We have two options, right?” Sunwoo is far too familiar with surgery and all this. He knows from his hospital days what’s supposed to happen next. But apparently, things have changed since then.
“Actually, there’s a third option.”
Sunwoo doesn’t waste a second. He jumps out of the chair stained red from his bleeding heart and asks: “What is it?”
“We can upload them.”
Tumblr media
act iii. scene ii.
In fifty days of living in the cloud, Sunwoo has learned all about the people that he shares a building with. There’s Mr. Chan who lives behind a vomit green on the same floor as him and who hasn’t left his room since last January. There’s also Mr. Choi, who lives behind the emerald door and invites Suwoo over for lunch every Thursday. Clara lives upstairs, where the walls are painted in various shades of green--olive, seaweed, moss, hunter, shamrock, sage, and others that Sunwoo tries not to think too deeply about. He’s only met Clara once in the past fifty days and has no particular wish to see her again. He hadn’t expected her to be a kid. Cancer, you told him after their introduction in the lobby, poor girl was only seven. As said before, Sunwoo tries not to think about it.
And then of course there’s you behind the forest green door who has been slowly showing him all the good places. There’s the beach where you spent the day making seashell necklaces. The  cafe which serves its tea too sweet for him, but sweet enough to be considered your favorite. Sunwoo just gets the chocolate bread. You took him downtown. To a club. The tallest building. And to midtown where the amusement park is.
But his favorite place you’ve taken him so far is the cliffside above the beach, where the waves crash against the rocks in a way that can only be described as violent. That day you and him laid in the grass and stared at the clouds with your heads dangling just over the edge and water spraying the backs of your necks. That day you turned to him and told him you’re sorry. For what, he asked. I’m so sorry you’re sick, you said, but it’s nice to have you around here. I think in a sense, we’ve both been waiting for this. Then, you smiled and stole all of the blood from his body. So yeah, that day, that place--it’s his favorite.
Today, you take him on a hike up a mountain.
“Do you believe in an afterlife?” You ask him after having spent thirty minutes silently staring at the view from the best peak.
“One after this?”
“Yeah. I guess. Although, I’m not so convinced this counts.”
“I don’t know.” Sunwoo shrugs. “Maybe.”
“Do you think we’d be able to be with our loved ones in it?”
His chest lurches. “If there is one, yes.”
“Do you think it’ll be different than this?”
Sunwoo turns to you finally. “Why are you asking about this?”
You shake your head. “Nevermind. It’s a stupid question.”
He turns back towards the view. From here, he can make out Clara’s building. He thinks about her, about Mr. Choi and Mr. Chan, who he recently found out were once married but who haven’t spoken since Mr. Chan read his file in January, and he thinks about you and about him.
“I think,” Sunwoo says, loud enough so that you can hear after wandering a little bit away from him, “that whatever the afterlife is, if it does exist, it’ll be worth it.”
You turn to him, but don’t make any move to come near him again. “And if it doesn’t exist?”
“Then life will have been worth it.”
The corner of your lip lifts. “I like that.”
Sunwoo only nods at the sentiment, and after a long while, he builds enough courage to ask, “you’ve been here a really long time, haven’t you?”
“Time doesn't work as linearly in the cloud as it does in the real world. Sometimes it feels like I got here and then you arrived the very next day.” You turn back towards the view and exhale heavily.
“But yes. I’ve been here for an eternity.”
Tumblr media
act ii. scene i.
Before he actually sees you, Sunwoo feels you. Not you, in particular, but something in the distance, a presence in the corner of the room and a pair of eyes watching him from somewhere far away.
The scariest part is how much the feeling doesn’t actually scare him.
--
Two days after that, he starts to see you in the flesh. He tells himself that his mind is playing tricks on him, that the person he saw in the produce aisle wasn’t actually you at all and was just a stranger with the same hair.
He doesn’t go straight home from the store that day. Instead, he stops by the hospital and checks in on you, but even that doesn’t do anything about the fact that he sees a shadow of you behind the bed.
--
The day after that, you speak to him. Standing in the middle of his kitchen in broad daylight, you speak, you say hello, and the first thing Sunwoo thinks is that he’s dead.
You aren’t, you reply. You’re a zombie, he reasons, here for my brain. I’m not. A ghost. No. Are you, here Sunwoo falters, fear flooding out of his body to make room for the briefest blotch of hope that’s crushed almost immediately by you saying: I’m not alive, Sunwoo. You saw me in the hospital yesterday.
“So then,” he swallows, “what are you?”
I’m here. You look at him, stare at his face and without a sliver of doubt say, I’m here for you.
Sunwoo knows it’s impossible. You can’t be here. You can’t. And yet, you are.
Three years ago Sunwoo was told he had three months left to live, and he still remembers how impossibly you saved him from the brink of death. He remembers how impossible things happen all the time, and how impossibly possible it is that this is one of them. He steps towards you, touches your face, and feels the real, impossible thing against his hand.
“You’re here.”
--
On the fifth day of your haunting, Sunwoo finally has the sense to ask why.
Why what?
“Why are you here?”
I’m here for you.
“Stop saying that.”
But I am, you tell him. You asked, and that’s the answer. I’m a doctor, Sunwoo. I’m here for you.
Then, finally, he hears what you’ve been saying for the past five days. You’re here for him.
And the thing about doctors is that they’re there for you when you need them.
“I’m sick.”
Yes, you answer quietly, although it wasn’t a question.
“Again.”
I’m so sorry.
“You’re a hallucination, aren’t you?” Sunwoo’s shocked by how sad that makes him, how disappointing it is. “I’ve been hallucinating.”
Find me in the Cloud, Sunwoo. There’s something I want to say.
You’re gone by the time he gets to the hospital.
Tumblr media
act iii. scene i.
Sunwoo stares at the hall of green doors, eyes darting from door to door in an attempt to stare down the shades until they confess which one of them is tea green.
“Clara, the landlord, likes colors.” A voice says from behind him. “Every couple of months she repaints all of the doors in different shades of the same one. Before the green, it was yellow.”
Sunwoo turns around to face you. When your eyes find him, they go blank for the smallest of moments. You give him a look that goes right through him, turning him inside out like you’ve seen the underside of his skin. It irks him.
“I’m Sunwoo. I’m new.”
You gulp. “You’re here.” He doesn’t know what to make of the statement. Do all people in the cloud act like this? “Why?”
Sunwoo nods, maybe you’re not so weird as much as you just have a weird way of posing questions. “I was told I’m sick.”
“I’m sorry.” You say, frowning like you actually might feel back for him.
“Have you been here a while then?” You nod. “Can I ask how long?” You shake your head. Sunwoo doesn’t think too much about it. Instead, he returns your earlier question “Why are you here?”
“Brain dead.”
“I’m sorry.”
You ignore it and point to a door down the hall. “I’m forest green. You?”
“Tea green. But I can’t find-”
You tap the door in front of him. “This one, genius.”
“Oh.” He laughs awkwardly. “Thanks.”
Your mouth parts as if to say something, and your face goes blank again. He feels his skin turning itself inside out because of it. “Have you read your file yet?”
He shakes his head. “I just got here.”
You inhale, softening, and mutter an ‘okay’. You continue down the hall towards your door. Sunwoo is stuck in place. “I can show you around here, if you like. Take you to all the cool places.”
Sunwoo takes you up on it.
A forest green door slams shut down the hallway.
Tumblr media
act i. scene ii.
“Thank you for taking me out of the hospital.” Sunwoo says, exhaling. “I can’t remember the last time I’ve been to a park like this.”
And it’s true, he really can’t. He’s been sick for so long now, and has been through a multitude of treatment plans and too many surgeries. When you’re sick and have 9 surgeons turn you down after asking them to save your life, you forget the joy of being outside and feeling the sun on your skin. You were the first doctor to agree to the surgery. You’re the only doctor to have ever treated Sunwoo like he wasn’t dying, like he was actually going to live.
“You don’t have to thank me. This is good for me too.” You say, head resting against the park bench and eyes closed.
Sunwoo inhales, taking in the park with all his senses. A visceral sort of thing you learn to do as often as possible when you’ve been as close to death as frequently as he has. He feels the wood beneath his body and the grass beneath his feet. He feels the light on his skin and the wind pushing against his arms and nose. He listens to the kids screaming at the playground at the bottom of the hill and to the dogs barking within the dog park beside it. He takes all this in, relishes in it for the last time as a dying person.
You sigh. “One more surgery.”
“And then I’ll be done with this sickness.”
You smile. He pretends not to see. “And then you’ll be done.”
“Thank you for saving my life.”
“Don’t do that.”
“No. Seriously.”
You smile again, this time at him. Sunwoo doesn’t have to pretend not to see. “I haven’t finished saving it yet.”
He leans back against the bench and closes his eyes. “But you will.”
You tap on your coffee cup. “Honestly though, you did more work than me.” Sunwoo frowns while you take a sip. “The other nine doctors you called are good doctors, and they made the same judgement call I would have made for any other patient. No sane doctor would have agreed to treat you. But you were the reason I said yes. You had such faith that you were going to live and so much faith that I could do it that I believed you. I might be the one doing the technical saving, but you, Sunwoo, you’re the one who convinced me to do it. You saved yourself.”
He stares at you. The light hits your eyes like it’s finding a way to break through them. In truth, before Sunwoo got sick, he didn’t think he was scared of death, but he is. He’s terrified of it. Sunwoo realized it two weeks after his diagnosis and the day after he was wrongly told he only had three more months left to live. But now, for the first time since he was diagnosed, he doesn't feel so afraid of it. Despite how far he’s come and how close he is to beating this fucking illness, while staring at the light woven through your eyes, Sunwoo thinks he could live with himself if he dropped dead tonight.
That thought alone, is almost as terrifying as death used to be.
Tumblr media
act iii. scene v.
“I saw your ghost, you know.” It’s the first thing Sunwoo has said to you in over two weeks. “It wasn’t actually you though, was it?” You don’t even bother looking up from your cup of tea. Through the silence, Sunwoo orders a coffee.
“I didn’t know that.” The coffee turns lukewarm. “It wasn’t me.” You push an uneaten half of chocolate bread towards him. “It’s in your brain this time. Symptoms can include hallucinations.”
“Think you can still save me?” You can’t. If you know that much, you know he’s out of medical miracles, and that this time, he really won’t survive it. But it’s a joke. And you laugh at it.
“Definitely not. I never really liked neurosurgery.”
And all at once, he’s painfully aware of your friend somewhere in the real world that does like it but watched anyways as your brain died before her, split wide open.
“Anyways, how do you know all of this?” But what Sunwoo really wants to say is brains are killer. Literally. Figuratively.
“I’ve known since we...“ you hesitate, mouth stuck halfway through a word he can’t place. “After last time, I read your chart and looked at your scans.” Sunwoo nods. He expected as much. He doesn’t ask how you got them. “I’m sorry you're sick again.” You say to him quietly. “I’m sorry you’re dying.”
“I’m sorry you’re dead.” As soon as the words have left his mouth, he regrets them. Because you aren’t. And he knows you too well to think you’d look past the technicality.
You scoff, shake your head slightly, and with a spiteful smile say, “Can I say it?”
Sunwoo only sighs. “Let’s start over instead.”
You nod. He pushes the chocolate bread back.
Tumblr media
act iii. scene iv.
Mr. Choi was the one to recommend that Sunwoo give you and himself space. It’s been a month since you and him last spoke, since that moment hovering above the waves after he read his file and after he found out you read yours. He misses you, and has been for so long now. Mr. Choi was wrong. Sunwoo’s standing outside your forest green door to prove it.
You open the door before he can knock. There’s no shock in your voice when you say his name, like you’ve been waiting for this day, expecting it.
He looks behind you, at your apartment in Clara’s building that looks just like your apartment in the real world. The same one he cleaned out after you died, still filled with things he gave to your family or donated or took back to his place. He wants to crumble just looking at it again. “Can I come in?”
“It’s only been a month.”
And he knows what you mean by it. Three months is the recommended time off after reading one’s file. To reacclimate, they say, to process. But the insinuation that Sunwoo was supposed to go three months without seeing you makes him feel sick. The insinuation that after a year of being without you in the real world he was supposed to be without you here too, enrages him. Then he remembers how long you’ve been here, and how long you’ve been doing this and feels slightly murderous.
All he says is: “It’s been a lot longer than that for you.”
Your lip twitches. You lock and unlock the open forest green door five times before saying, “Are you sure?”
He nods. You let him in.
Sunwoo used to imagine what it would be like to meet you again in the Cloud one day. He imagined tears and hugs and kisses. He imagined i love you’s and i hate you’s and i miss you. He imagined the scenario more times than can possibly be considered healthy. But he imagined something. He was waiting for the day. Waiting for this day. But this moment, sitting at your round wood table while you boil water for tea, is nothing like the million different ways he imagined seeing you again.
And as you set down two mismatched mugs and take the seat across from him, he doesn’t even try to create one of them. “How long has it been since you read your file?”
You watch the steam rise from your tea for a long moment, then stand, grab the sugar and pour a spoonful of it into your tea. You take another spoonful and look at him expectantly. “Want some?” He nods, and you pour the sugar into his. You stir the tea then taste, then cringe, then add more sugar and then ask if he wants it. He refuses. You stir again. Sunwoo watches the whirlpool and waits the eternity it takes you to say: “I read it on my first day.”
You put the sugar away, satisfied with the tea’s sweetness while Sunwoo marvels at how long you’ve known and how silently you’ve been carrying the knowledge of you and him since he came. And that knowledge is what makes him finally remember one of the reasons he came. “Is there something you want to tell me?” You look up at him when he asks it, exhaling like you’ve been wanting to bring it up for so long now, which Sunwoo guesses isn’t as much of a simile as he thinks it is.
“Yes, actually. I…” you hesitate, flicking the mug as if the right words will come hopping out of the tea. Sunwoo watches for it. “I’ve just been here for a long time now, Sunwoo.”
“Two years isn’t that long.”
“Time doesn’t work the same here as it does down there.” You tell him tiredly. “It’s been decades.”
He doesn’t say anything.
“In the beginning, I didn’t mind the waiting. I knew you were on your way, but I just,” you hesitate, “I didn’t think it’d take so long for you to come back to me.”
Sunwoo covers your hand with his. “I’m sorry.” You twist your palm into it, squeeze, then pull your hand away. Sunwoo swallows. “I came as fast as I could.”
“I know. I waited.”
“Do you regret it?” Sunwoo’s terrified of what the answer might be.
You don’t give it. “That’s not what I meant.”
“Then?”
“I’ve been here for so long, and,” your head drops, voice breaking under the weight it carries, “it’s been so lonely.”
“But I’m here now.” Sunwoo says, leaning forward against the table. “You aren’t alone anymore.”
“I know you’re here. I know, and I thought that would fix it, but it didn’t. Seeing you in the hall that day was so bittersweet, because you were here but that also meant you were somewhere else dying. Because you were here and I still felt lonely.” You stop, chugg the remaining bits of your tea, and then wipe your cheeks. “Do you get what I’m saying?”
“No.” But it’s a lie. He does get it. He knows all about loneliness and the way it creeps inside, so slyly. The way it starts small and then grows, feeding on negligence, until it's too big for your body. He knows how it sits inside you, for all its enormity, and spills into everything. He knows how it lingers. How it has nothing to do with people or lack of them and everything to do with grief. Sunwoo knows all about loneliness. The day he read his file he felt a dam of it burst open within him.
“I’m saying that in the real world I saved you, and now it’s your turn to save me.” You gulp. “I’m saying that I want you to unplug me.”
It takes a moment for Sunwoo to even register what you’ve said, but when he does remember the life support that’s keeping your body alive somewhere in a universe far away, he doesn’t say anything. He just stands and walks out of your apartment.
Tumblr media
act i. scene iii.
“Doctor, please present.” The attending announces, stepping into Sunwoo’s room for rounds.
“Mr. Kim,” a resident starts, flipping open his chart, “was diagnosed 14 months ago and has gone through several different treatment plans. When he came to us, the illness had spread and was deemed inoperable and untreatable by several other physicians. Our treatment plan was aggressive and grueling but ultimately, effective. Sunwoo is 20 days post op from his third and final surgery. The surgery went extremely well with no complications and his vitals were excellent. He has been a model patient all throughout recovery, and according to our latest scans, he is also now illness free…”
Sunwoo doesn’t even bother listening to the rest.
--
“So, now that I’m no longer a patient, if I ask you out on a date, will you actually say yes?”
“Well,” you say, signing his discharge papers, “only one way to know.”
“What is it?”
You look up at him, smiling. “Ask me again.”
He does.
You say yes.
Tumblr media
act iii. scene v. take ii.
“I saw your ghost.” The first thing Sunwoo says after the last failed attempt.
You look up from your tea. “It wasn’t me.”
“I know.” Sunwoo orders another coffee. “But the hallucination was how I knew I was sick again. It made me feel like you were trying to warn me, like you were up here somewhere caring from a distance. Right after I pieced it all together you told me to find you here and that there was something you wanted to say.” The coffee turns lukewarm again. Sunwoo can’t bring himself to say it. You sigh and push the same piece of chocolate bread back towards him. This time, he takes a bite from it. And with a mouthful of chocolate bread, he cries, “I just got you back, and now you want to leave all over again.”
You frown. “I didn’t want to leave the first time, and it’s different now.”
“How?”
“I want to go. Isn’t that worth something?”
“And what about what I want?”
“Oh, Sunwoo,” you say, “I’m sorry you’re sick. The hallucination was you and your head, but for what it’s worth, I have been up here caring from a distance. I still…” you don’t need to say the words. He knows. He never had to doubt it. “I never stopped.”
“I’ve been thinking about what you asked of me.” Sunwoo tells you. He made the decision last week but today, right now, with your confession still falling through the air, is the first time he’s had the stomach to swallow it. “And I’ll do it. I will. I just need some time. You’ve had so long and in comparison I’ve had nothing.”
“Okay.” You say simply.
“How long can you give me?”
You smile. “You know I’d give you an eternity if you asked for it.”
“I’m scared.” Sunwoo confesses then. “I know it’s what you want, but selfishly, I don’t want to let you again. I don’t know if I’m a big enough person to do it.”
“I do.” You say to him, leaning forward against the table and looking straight through him. “I know because I was your doctor. I have cut inside your body, seen all your organs, and during surgery two, I held your heart in my hands. I felt it beating. So I know exactly how big it is, and I know it’s big enough for this”
Sunwoo feels the heart you worked so hard to repair bursting inside of him.
“God. Why’d you have to read your file so soon?”
You laugh. “I missed you. I couldn’t help it.”
And just like that, you’ve stolen the entire concept of fear from him.
“I’m ready.”
“What?”
He looks at you and feels the loneliness slither away.
“Ask me again.”

Night Shift - One Shot
a/n: back at it again with another Halloween themed fic! This was inspired by an ask requesting Harry and Y/N both work/meet in the ER. Slight twist on it, but I hope you like it! Reblogs and feedback are super helpful! (not proofread)
Warnings: friends to lovers, smut at the end
Words: 6.8K
Tumblr media
Becoming a doctor took a lot of hard work dedication. Countless sleepless nights, a large debt to pay back, finding a hospital to become a resident in, and countless seminars to go to, to make sure all practices were up to date. At first, Y/N hated working the graveyard shift. She rarely got to see friends or family, she was getting minimal amounts of sleep because, let’s face it, sleeping during the day never worked out the way you wanted it to. However, she stopped minding it so much when one of the nicest nurses took his turn on the overnight shifts.
Nurse Styles was usually the voice of reason. He could calm any patient down, and the kids in pediatrics loved him. He always had a lollypop ready to go. All of the nurses took turns with the different shifts so it was fair for everyone. He had heard of Dr. Y/L/N, but had never met her. She was newer to the hospital, a white coat, but still baby-faced. Harry really enjoyed being a nurse, he didn’t want to be the person in there doing surgery, but he liked being able to get things started, and ease someone into the more difficult things. He had a way of administering bad news, and easing the pain from it. His broad shoulders were perfect for crying on, and if it was a kid he needed to prep for getting their appendix out, he held their hand the entire way to the operating room.
Y/N was just getting in, putting her things in her breakroom cubby when Harry walked in. He smiles at her, and she smiles back as he also puts his things away.
“Chilly out there tonight.” He says as he puts his scrubs on over his long sleeve under armor. She only looked for a second, his arm muscles were certainly defined. “I don’t think we’ve properly met yet, I’m Harry.” He extends her hand and she takes it.
“It’s nice to meet you, I’m Y/N.”
“Well, Y/N, lucky for you I’ll be your nurse for the next couple of months.”
“You seem a little too chipper about working overnight.” She chuckles as she gets her white coat on and stethoscope around her neck.
“I don’t mind it.” He shrugs. “A lot of the other nurses have spouses and kids they rarely get to see, so it’s only fair I take my turn on the overnight stuff. I usually take it this time of year anyways.”
“Why’s that?”
“The Halloween crazies start trickling towards the end of September. Think the staff likes having me as extra muscle or whatever.”
Her face pales as she looks at him. She had completely forgotten about Halloween. Last year she worked during the day, but she had heard about all of the nonsense from the entire weekend. Drunk people needing their stomach pumped, car wrecks, people on drugs, etc.
“So, what’s your specialty? You’re not a surgeon are you?” He breaks her from her trance.
“No, I’m not a surgeon, just a regular old doctor. I almost ended up in maternity like a lot of female doctors, but it wasn’t for me.” They both walk into the main area so they can get briefed for the night.
Harry says hello to the other nurses at the desk, and he takes his seat to login into the computer. There was another doctor on the overnight shifts, Dr. Gilles, and Y/N really couldn’t stand him. He was one of those doctors who was sort of rude to the nurses because he had been at the hospital for a while, but he was handsome so a lot of them didn’t even care. He would flirt with Y/N when he’d get the chance, but she didn’t really like it. She’d seen Scrubs, she didn’t need the drama that comes with hooking up with a coworker. Not to mention the guy was, like, forty, and she was only pushing thirty. To some that may not be a big age difference, but it weirded her out nonetheless. It weirded her out more when he’d catch her flirting with some of the younger nurses.
“Evening everyone.” Dr. Gilles. “He says as he walks up to the desk. “Quiet so far?”
“Pretty much.” Nurse Halleran says. “Hope it stays that way. You’ve got a couple of people you just need to check in on.” She hands him a few charts and he nods as he takes them. “How are you, Dr. Y/L/N?”
“Good.” She says as she looks over her cuticles. She feels his eyes burn into her, and she fiddles with some of the pens on the desk. “Nurse Styles, back on the graveyard, huh?”
“Yup.” Harry says with a fake smile. He also did not like Dr. Gilles. He felt protective over the other nurses, and none of them felt uncomfortable by Dr. Gilles, but he was a married man who openly flirted with people, and that kind of behavior just didn’t fly with Harry. “Dr. Y/L/N, one of your patients needs their vitals checked. Young thing, coming down from a bladder and kidney infection.”
“Alright, let’s go.” Harry hands her the chart and she looks it over as they walk to where the patient was sleeping.
Bethany Martin, ten years old, bladder and kidney infection. Another doctor wanted to size her up for an appendix removal, but it was Y/N that discovered that it wasn’t the child’s appendix. The girl had told her the pain had moves from the front of her stomach, to her side, and then to her back. She got major brownie points from the administration for making that catch.
Her and Harry slowly go into the room. Her father was sleeping in one of the fold out chairs provided. He wakes up when he hears the door open.
“Hello, Mr. Martin.” Y/N whispers with a smile. “We’re just going to check on Beth’s vitals, see how her fever’s doing, alright?”
“Sure thing, thank you.” He stands up and goes over to his daughter to help her wake up a little.
“Hmm.” The girl slowly opens her eyes, and then she smiles when she sees Y/N. See, Beth was scared that she was going to get cut open, so she was beyond grateful that she didn’t have to have surgery. “Hello.” She says sleepily.
“Hi, sweetheart, I need to check a few things, would that be alright?” Y/N asks.
“Yes.”
“Hi, Beth, how’s your IV feeling in that hand?” Harry asks her.
“It’s itchy, Nurse Harry.”
He smiles at her. A lot of the kids would call him that instead of Nurse Styles, he thought it was sweet.
“Think we should switch it to your other hand then.”
“Why’s it in her hand and not in her arm?” Y/N questions.
“We had a tough time…this one likes to pull away.” Harry explains and winks at Beth which makes her giggle.
Y/N let’s Harry switch out the IV. She lets Beth hold her hand as she winces from the needle. Once he’s done, Y/N checks everything else. She has Beth roll onto her stomach so she can feel around her back.
“I haven’t been as achy.” Beth says as she gets settled on her back once more. “It still hurts a little though.”
“Mm, I bet. Took us a bit to figure things out with you, but you seem to be doing a lot better. Should only need to be here for another few days. We’ll come back to check on you later this morning.”
“Thank you.” She snuggles back into her blankets and slowly falls back asleep.
Mr. Martin thanks Y/N and Harry before they leave, and she they both go to wash their hands at one of the sink stations.
“Nurse Harry, huh? Do all the little girls call you that?” Y/N smirks.
“Why, jealous?” He bumps his hip to hers before grabbing a paper towel to dry his hands. She rolls her eyes at him, and he chuckles. “The kids just tend to call me that, I don’t mind it.”
“It must ease them a bit more to be on a first name basis, I should remember that. I hate seeing kids in pain, I’m glad she’s doing better.”
“I know it sucks, but I actually like working with the kids more. They at least listen to us. Some of these adult patients…they fight us on every little thing sometimes.” They make their way back to the desk.
“Dr. Y/L/N?” Nurse Stevens says to her. “I’m going on a coffee run, would you like anything?”
“You’re an angel, yes”, she reaches into her pocket for some loose singles, “just a regular with a little cream, no sugar, thank you.”
“Harry?” She says to him.
“Brought my thermos, but thanks Ellie.” He smiles at her and she nods before going on her way.
“She’s the best, I’ve worked with her during the day before.” Y/N says to Harry.
“Yeah, Ellie and I came on together.”
“Oh, really?”
Harry hums his response as he types some notes into the computer. Harry and Ellie had a bit of a past, nothing serious, but they had hooked up on occasion. Being a nurse meant working a lot of long days, and that left little room for a social life or companionship. They may or may not have taken advantage of the beds in the room adjacent to the breakroom a few times, but that was a year or so ago. She had started seeing someone, so they ended things amicably.
“Why just the cream and no sugar?” He asks to change the subject.
“Well, for a while I was doing the keto thing, which is absolute rubbish and I never should have done it, but I got into the habit of not adding sugar to things. I don’t like the taste of black coffee, it’s too bitter, so the cream helps. I don’t miss the sugar, in fact, I can’t stand really sugary drinks in general.”
“Why’d you do the keto in the first place?”
“Oh, I was looking to lose some weight before a wedding I had to go to. I was a bridesmaid so I just wanted to look nice in the pictures, you know? It works when you stick to it, but as soon as I stopped I gained most of it back. Deprivation diets are never a good idea, and I knew it, but did it anyways because it was a quick way to do things.” He goes to say something, but decides against it. Her head tilts as she can tell he’s withholding something. “Go ahead, tell me as a doctor it was stupid of me to jump on a fad diet.” She sighs and leans on the tall desk.
“No, I was just going to say…” He blushes slightly. “Well, I just feel bad that you thought you needed to lose any weight because you…well…you must know how beautiful you are as is.”
She stands up straight. She literally just met this man tonight, what was going on? Just as she was about to say something, Ellie comes back with the coffee.
“Here you go.” She smiles.
“Oh, thank you.” Y/N takes the coffee. “I’m gonna go take a walk to the other nurse’s station, see how they’re doing. Page me if you need anything.”
Harry watches her walk away and he groans with his head in his hands.
“Don’t tell me.” Ellie smirks. “You have a crush on Dr. Y/L/N…shocking.” Ellie giggles and rolls her eyes.
“I just met her, I don’t have a crush on her. But I may have just said something inappropriate.”
“You?!” Ellie was shocked. “Harry, you’re, like, the nicest person I know. What did you say?”
“I just told her she was beautiful.”
“It’s not like it’s a lie, she’s rather pretty. Seems to take care of herself. It’s not an easy thing to do, especially on these shifts.”
“I know! It just felt weird after I said it. I don’t wanna be like Dr. Gilles, you know?”
“Please.” She scoffs. “You’re nothing like him.”
Y/N does her nightly rounds, checking on her various patients. A few people come in that need to be checked right away, but other than that things were quiet. Around six in the morning she and Harry go to check on little Beth again.
“Definitely only need you here another couple of nights. Keep getting those fluids in, and this fever will go away in no time.” Y/N says.
The girl nods at her tiredly before falling back asleep. Y/N helps out with some last minute patients before going to the breakroom to change. Harry was in there taking his shirt off. She tries not to stare as he pulls a sweatshirt on over himself. She wouldn’t have minded a few more moments to examine his tattoos. She knew he had a few just from his left hand alone, but shit, he had them all over his chest and stomach!
“Well, see you tonight. Hope you can get some sleep.” Harry says to her.
“Same to you.” She smiles and goes into her locker.
“I hope, uh, I hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable earlier in the night…” He rubs the back of his neck.
“You didn’t, it’s fine…I’m just one of those people that has a tough time taking a compliment. Um, it happened to me in school a lot too, like, if someone told me I was smart or something, you know?”
“Okay, I just wanted to make sure.”
“I appreciate that, Harry, thank you.”
He nods and heads out. On his way home he realizes he’s far too awake to be able to fall asleep, so when he gets into his flat he takes a sleeping pill, and nestles down with a cup of tea while he watches a little TV. Once his eyes feel tired he heads to bed, getting cozy under his blankets, and eventually passing out.
Y/N does something similar. She definitely takes a sleeping pill before jumping into a warm shower. She pulls her blackout curtains, and gets into bed. Her eyelids feel heavier and heavier as she listens to a podcast, and she slowly falls asleep.
//
Things went on like that for the next couple of weeks. Harry would often assist Y/N on her rounds. He liked that she wasn’t one of those snooty doctors that discounted the nurses, she really seemed to value their opinions, even consulting with them when she needed to. They became fast friends too, often eating together or taking coffee breaks at the same time. She learned that Harry was a couple of years younger than her, and he had been at this hospital for around five years. He explained he liked working at a hospital rather than a smaller practice so he could help more people, and she said she felt the same way.
“Maybe when I’m, like fifty, I’ll settle and open up my own practice. But only because I might not have the same spring in my step.” She chuckles as they both sit and enjoy some coffee.
“You can really sprint when you need to! You were incredible when that guy came in with that allergic reaction the other night.”
“I was internally freaking out the whole time to be honest with you. I was glad to have you there to help me intubate him.”
“Feel like I can do that with my eyes closed now.” He laughs and finishes his warm drink. “I hate to be one of those people, but you’re looking a little tired tonight.”
“Oh, that’s because I never left this morning. I worked all day, took a nap, and then got right back on it.”
“Y/N, that’s not okay. You can’t do your job properly if you’re tired.”
“I know, but we were short staffed, and I was only going to stay a couple of hours, but I got wrapped up with a couple of people. I’m fine, honest, I’ll have a good sleep when I get home later.”
“Shit like that used to happen to me all the time. I’d work sixteen hour days, and then they’d yell at me because I was getting so much overtime, and I’d tell them to hire more bloody people then. It was infuriating. Then you think the place is gonna fall apart without you when you finally do get some time off.”
“Literally! I think that’s why I got stuck here for so long. I have the next couple of days off, though, so I’m looking forward to that.”
“Yeah? Any big plans?”
“No.” She scoffs. “Not unless you consider binging a fuck ton of television while eating a gallon of ice cream big plans.”
“Depends on the show, what’s on the docket to be binged?”
“I’ve been meaning to sit down and watch Ratched. I’ve heard some mixed reviews, but I’m just so intrigued.”
“Mm, nothing better than a show about a crazy nurse.” He rolls his eyes.
“Aw, feeling a little misrepresented?” She smirks.
“Maybe a wee bit. Let me know if it’s worth the watch, though, yeah?”
“Definitely.” She finishes up her coffee and sighs. “Back to it I suppose.”
“Go lay down if you want, we’re not busy.”
“No, it’s fine. I’m catching a second wind.” She stands up and shakes her body out. “See, awake and ready to-“, her beeper goes off, “Shit, some teenagers were just brought in.”
They both hurry out of the breakroom, and go to where they’re needed. Three teenage boys were laying in hospital beds, clearly in pain.
“Alright, what seems to be the problem here?” Y/N says as Harry works on taking their vitals.
“We…fell off the water tower.” One of them says.
She sighs and starts checking for bumps and bruises. She doesn’t ask why they were there, she was sure their parents would rip them a new one for that. A few sprained ankles, and one broken wrist, but nothing too serious otherwise. Y/N gives her instructions to Harry, and tells the boys they’ll need to switch off between aspirin and ibuprofen to help with pain and inflammation. Harry gets the broken wrist into a splint and sling, and gets the others settled as well.
“Isn’t this a little backwards?” One of them says to him after Y/N’s left. “Isn’t she supposed to be the nurse?”
“Well, considering that she went to school for a lot longer than I did, and probably has a lot more knowledge about the body than I do, I’d say she’s supposed to be the doctor.” Harry says.
“Isn’t it weird being a male nurse though?”
“M’not a male nurse.” He makes some notes on the laptop he was using. “I’m just a nurse.” He closes the laptop and looks at the three of them. “Your parents should be here soon, hope you lot feel better, and be safer out there.”
It wasn’t the first time Harry got a comment like that, and it wouldn’t be the last. He didn’t go to school as premed and then go off to a fancy medical school. He majored in Allied Health in uni, and passed all his tests. That was it, and that was all he wanted to do. There was nothing wrong with that. He was proud of himself. He hoped Y/N was proud of herself too.
//
Flu shot season was in full swing, and there were usually a couple of days a year the hospital did walk-in appointments so people could come in easily to get them. Harry had picked up a shift to administer them. Y/N had come in to be on call so one of the other doctors could have the day off. She smiles when she sees Harry in the cafeteria at lunch.
“Hey, you.” She says as she sits down. “Weird seeing you in the daylight.”
“Could say the same to you. What’s all this about? Don’t tell me you’re working another triple…” He raises an eyebrow at her.
“No, I swapped shifts with Dr. Jollas so she could have the day with her kids. What are you doing here today?”
“I’m on for the flu shots. It’s an easy enough shift to pick up.”
“Get a lot of people in for that?”
“Sure, tons.”
“That makes me happy to hear.” She sighs.
“How were your couple of days off? Did you watch your show?”
“I only watched about two episodes…there was a lot more gore than I was expecting.”
“Y/N…you’re a doctor…”
“Yes, and I can handle small amounts of blood, especially when I’m in the moment helping someone, but there was literally a scene where they were showing how lobotomies were done and a scene where this kid cut off his own arms, so it was a bit much for me. Not something I should be watching alone, anyways.”
“That’s gross.” Harry grimaces. “Don’t blame you for not getting through it.”
“So I ended up just re-watching The Office for the millionth time. It was perfect.” She chuckles. “Are you working all of Halloween weekend?”
“I am.” He nods. “I hope you’ll add some flare to your outfit. The kids like it when we do.”
“Some flare, huh?”
“I have these scrubs that have pumpkins, ghosts, and black cats on them.”
“Hm, I’ll have to think about what I can add. I have some earrings with witches on them, that could be fun.”
“As long as you get into the spirt somehow. We all decorate the nurse’s station and everything. Ellie usually brings in cupcakes too.”
“Speaking of her…” Y/N leans in a bit. “Did you catch the rock on her finger? I’m happy for her and all, but she said she’s only been with her fiancé for eight months. It’s a bit fast.”
“Well, they were casual before they made things official. She was, uh, seeing a couple of people, and then he asked her to get serious and she did.” He shrugs.
“Oh, I see.” She nods and sits back. “I’m not judging or anything, I mean, I guess when you, you know.” She takes a bite of her food, and then leans back in. “Can I ask you something?” She whispers.
“Always.” He leans in as well. Harry be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy a spot of gossip, and Y/N had become his new favorite person to gossip with. It didn’t take them long to become the two bitches that are always talking shit about everyone else.
“Do people use the bunk room to bone?”
His face flushes, and then he clears his throat.
“Why would you ask me that?”
“Because you know everything about this place! I wish it was a singles only room because I swear I saw Nurse Halleran and Dr. Gilles coming out of there, and only one of the beds looked used.”
Harry makes a disgusted face and rolls his eyes.
“I feel bad for whoever he’s married to.” He shakes his head. “Scumbag.”
“Nurse Halleran’s married too! I could never do that. I mean, I’ve been in relationships before, and maybe I’ve thought someone else is attractive, I can appreciate a pretty face, but I would never cheat on my significant other. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.”
“Same here. That’s, like, the ultimate betrayal. How do you even come back from that? I get that our jobs can make for lonely lives, but make the time count at home when you can.”
“Does he have kids?”
“No, I think that’s why he doesn’t feel bad about it. She has two kids, though, I don’t know, I only talk to her about work things if I can help it. I miss some of my girls from the day shifts, like, Shauna is super nice and has this really warm smile.”
“Feel like she’s the hospital granny.” Y/N smiles. “I like her a lot too, the few interactions I’ve had with her.”
“How long do you think they’ll keep you on the night shift for?”
“I have no idea, think I’m just paying my dues as the new doctor. I’m getting more used to it, it’s not too bad. If it goes through summer I can drag my bum to the beach and sleep there.” She laughs and so does he.
“Might have to join you for that, I love getting a good tan.”
“It’s a date.” She says, more so as a joke, but from the way he looks at her he may have taken it a different way, so she clears her throat and laughs it off. “Anyways, I better get back to it. Nothing worse than being in the middle of eating and the beeper going off.” She stands up. “Have a good one, Harry.”
“You too.” He watches her walk away, and he sighs.
//
On Halloween, Y/N goes in a few hours early because she was told they let the kids go around the halls to the different nurse’s stations to trick or treat, and she really didn’t want to miss out on it. She puts on her witches earrings, and some spooky pins for her coat, and out she goes. She stops off at the store to buy some extra candy, and puts it in a pumpkin shaped bucket. She smiles when she sees Harry behind the desk already in his Halloween scrubs.
“Excellent effort.” He says, and then taps his finger over his mouth in thought. “Could use a little something extra, though.”
“Yeah? Like what?” She sets the candy down on the desk and he walks around it.
“Follow me.” Y/N follows Harry into the breakroom, and he pulls a bag out of his locker. He has her go into the unisex bathroom wither, and she sits up on the counter for him. “I’m working a double today, I did some face painting earlier for some of the younger kids. Sort of a way to give them a costume for when they walk around.”
“Harry, why don’t you just solely work in pediatrics?”
“Because I did some face painting for the elderly too, now hush. I need to concentrate.”
He takes what looks like a black sharpie out of the bag, but Y/N recognizes it as liquid eye-liner.
“What exactly are you going to do with that? Give me cat eyes?” She chuckles.
“No, you dolt, we’d need hours for that. I’m just gonna draw a little spider web on your cheek, alright?”
“Okay.”
Harry had never been this close to her face before. She got a nice whiff of his cologne, and she liked being able to see the few freckles he had. She notices now he’s painted his nails black and orange, he must really like Halloween. She closes her eyes as he starts drawing on her right cheek. His eyebrows were furrowed in concentration. A slight gasp leaves her lips when his other hand grips her chin to tilt her head.
“Still just me, don’t worry.” He chuckles. “Don’t get jumpy on me.”
“M’not, sorry.” She sucks her lips into her mouth as his hand moves to the side of her neck. Y/N may or may not be a little touch starved.
“Almost done.” He says just as she was opening her eyes back up.
“Harry, has anyone ever told you how pretty your eyes are?”
“Shut up.” He scoffs, and finishes up. “All done, tell me what you think.”
“I mean it!” She says as he backs away enough for her to hop off the counter and turn around in the mirror. “Oh, excellent job. I especially like that you drew a little spider dangling from the web.”
“It’s my signature detail. Now you look perfect.” They look at each other through the mirror. “We should probably get out of here before someone thinks we’re boning.”
She bursts out laughing at that.
“Good one.” She says and shakes her head.
“It wasn’t that funny.” He mutters as he puts the bag back in his locker.
“N-no, it wasn’t.” She clears her throat. “Sorry.”
“Stop apologizing.” He nudges her shoulder and they walk back out to the main area.
The trick or treating was a lot of fun, and the kids seemed to have their spirits lifted. Then shit got real when the drunk people started coming in, the people the police had to bring in for psych evaluations, and the people that had too many edibles. It was crazy busy, Y/N had been running around all night. She was given the okay to go lay down for about thirty minutes since she had come in early. She stops short when she sees Harry laying in one of the bunks. He was laying on his side with his arms crossed over his chest. She quietly slips into one of the other bunks, and takes a deep breath.
“You’re awfully loud.” He says.
“Christ! I was quieter than a mouse!” She says, and turns to face him. He opens his eyes and grins at her. “Ah, you were just fucking with me.”
“Obviously.”
“Busy out there tonight. I mean, I expected it, but still.”
“I know.” He yawns and stretches out. “I’ve been in here too long, I need to go back out before I get groggy.” He swings his legs over the side of the bed and slowly gets up. “Have a nice snooze.”
“Thanks.” She chews her bottom lip for a moment. “Do you have any makeup wipes? I’d hate to wake up with a smudged web.”
“Oh, sure, one second.” He leaves momentarily and comes back in with a wipe for her cheek. Instead of handing it to her, he sits on the edge of her bunk, cups one of her cheeks in his hand, and uses the other to carefully wipe off the drawing. Her eyes flutter closed and she sighs. “There.” Her eyes open back up and she smiles softly at him.
“Thank you.”
There was something brewing between them, they could both feel it. He’s about to lean in to kiss her, but he hears the click of the door open, and stands up immediately. It was another doctor who was I desperate need of a snooze. Harry leaves, and Y/N tries to relax enough to fall asleep.
They don’t see each other again until the morning when they’re both getting ready to leave. He chews on his inner cheek, trying to work up a little bit of courage.
“Y/N?”
“Yeah?”
“I’m sure you’re probably tired, but…I have these, uh, pancake stencils where you can make pancakes look like pumpkins or ghosts…I thought maybe we could celebrate surviving Halloween together, but I’ll understand if you’re ready to just crash or-“
“I’d love to have breakfast with you.” She smiles as she closes her locker. “I’m gonna go home and shower. Text me your address, yeah?”
“Alright.” He smiles and watches her walk out.
//
Y/N takes a very quick shower so she can freshen up. She wasn’t sure what might go down between them. She felt like she was getting to be a little too old to just be hooking up with someone, but Harry was really great, so she decides to just go with the flow. She heads to his flat after he sent her his address, making sure to buy some orange juice as something to bring over.
He lets her in and she can’t get over how cozy he looks in his sweatpants, graphic tee, and cardigan. She was in a pair of leggings and a sweater.
“It smells so good in here.” She says.
“Thanks, I made some tea too if you want something warm.”
She nods and he pours her a cup. They giggle over the pancakes, and Harry confirms that Halloween is definitely one of his favorite holidays. The two decide it might be fun to watch a Halloween movie, but naturally after a long sift, they fall asleep together on his sofa. She was nestled into his chest with his arms wrapped around her. She would have slept longer, but she woke up to the sound of him snoring. She shuffles a little, but accidentally knees him in the groin, waking up immediately.
“Shit, I’m so sorry! I didn’t realize I was laying on you like this.”
“It’s fine.” He says as he reaches for himself. “I’m good.” He knuckles at one of his eyes, keeping his other arm around her. He looks at the TV screen and sees that something else had come on. “Slept through the movie…”
“Guess we got a little too comfy.” She looks up at him. “Forgot how nice it was to cuddle with someone.” She mumbles tiredly.
“We could…go to my bed if you want, have a proper cuddle.”
“Would you spoon me if we do that?”
“Yeah, if that’s what you want.”
She nods yes, so he manages to pick her up, and carry her to his bedroom. She almost didn’t want to let go him when he sets her down, but all is good once he slides in next to her, pulls the blankets over them, and he wraps himself around her. She sighs as his pelvis aligns with her bum, and his arm wraps around her waist.
“Good?” He asks.
“Mhm.” She wiggles against him to get even more comfortable.
“Don’t do that.”
“Why not.”
“Because I’ll get excited, and that’ll make things awkward.”
“Define excited.”
“You know exactly what I mean, Y/N.” He sighs.
“I wanna hear you say it.”
“I’ll get hard, and it’s already difficult enough to control that around you, so-“
“You can press it against me if you want, I don’t mind.” She looks over her shoulder at him.
“You’re serious?”
“If I wasn’t I certainly wouldn’t have let you carry me to your bed.” She rolls onto her other side to face him. “I like being your friend and all, but I’ve done this with someone who’s just a friend before. I…I feel like we almost kissed earlier…”
“We did. Can we try again now?”
“Please.”
His hand slides to the back of her neck and he pulls her closer to him. His lips still tasted like the syrup they put on their pancakes, and she likes it more than she really should. Her tongue swipes along his bottom lip, and he opens up for her. Their tongues swirl around each other, and she tugs him on top of her as she turns onto her back. One of his legs goes between hers, and she grunts when she feels his thigh right on her. She wraps her arms around his neck as their tongues still mold together.
She slips her other leg around his waist so he could lay full between her. He groans into her mouth as he grinds himself against her. A soft moan leaves her lips when she feels how hard he is. She could feel herself throbbing for him. He sits up a little, just to get his cardigan off, and her hands slide up his stomach under his shirt. He shudders from her touch, and he just takes his shirt off too. Her eyes widen as she can finally look over his tattoos.
“This is beautiful.” She says as her fingers trace over the butterfly on his torso.
“Thanks.” He smiles and gets back down to lay on her chest to chest as he kisses her.
He kisses from her lips, along her jaw, and to her neck, all while she’s grinding herself against him. One of his hands finds her hair and he yanks her head to the side so he can get better access to her neck. He licks over the spot just below her ear, and he sinks his teeth in. He sucks on her soft skin, and her mouth falls open. She normally wasn’t super into biting, but whatever he was doing felt really good. When he pops off her she puts her hand over the new bruise.
“That’s definitely gonna leave a mark.” She says to him.
“Kind of the whole point.” He smirks. “Maybe Dr. Gilles will leave you alone if he thinks you’re already getting it from someone else.”
“Not very professional though, is it?”
“That nice white coat of yours will cover it. Wear your hair down for a few days, no one will notice. Or maybe they will, oh well. I’ve never much cared what other people think.”
“That’s because you’re not the one walking around with a mark on your neck.” She pouts at him.
“I could be if you wanted to give me one.”
She bites her bottom lip to contemplate just about every little thing that’s going on between them. She had her legs around him, she was in his bed, and he was shirtless sucking marks into her neck.
“Are…are you going to fuck me?” She asks.
“Do you want me to?”
“Kinda.” She giggles. “You’re, um, really sexy, Harry.”
“Well, that’s very nice of you to say, but ‘kinda’ isn’t exactly a yes, Y/N.”
“Could we maybe just…touch each other? Below the belt?”
“Yeah, we can do that.”
He rolls them both over so they’re on their sides facing each other again, and he pulls her leg up over his hip. She reaches for him first, skimming her fingers along the band of his sweatpants before dipping her fingers him. His breath hitches as she palms him over his boxers.
“You’re okay with this?” She asks him.
“Very.” He grunts. “Go for it.”
She nods and slips her hand inside his boxers, wrapping her hand around his warm cock. She bites her bottom lip as she runs her thumb over his tip, which was already leaking precome, and she slides it down his length.
His hand grips her ass before sliding it around to her front, and pulling her leggings back so he can get his hand in. A moan leaves his lips when he feels her wetness through her thong. He pets over at first, teasing her a little, but she squeezes him a little too tight, and that was signal enough to get the show on the road. He tugs her thong to the side, and runs his fingers along her slit before dipping his middle finger inside her. She squeezes around the intrusion, and then she relaxes a bit for him.
Harry slides another finger inside her, and works them in and out as his thumb takes care of her clit. He leans in to kiss her as they work each other over. She sucks on his bottom lip as she pumps his slick cock in her hand. He finds himself bucking into her grasp, but neither seem to care since she was grinding against his fingers. He curls them up inside her, and that’s when she starts breathing heavily.
“Oh, shit.” Her mouth falls open and she starts pumping him faster. “Fuck, oh my god, H-Harry, it feels so good, don’t stop.” She was nearly gagging for it, and it shocked him to see her falling apart like this just from him fingering her.
“Y/N.” He moans and presses his forehead to hers. “I’m gonna come.”
“M-me too, shit.”
She feels her hand become warm and sticky as she comes around his fingers. She tightens around him to make it last as long as possible, and then she catches breath. She doesn’t want to make a mess of his sweat pants, so she takes her hand out slowly, keeping as much of his come in her palm as she can. They make eye contact, and she licks her palm clean. He does the same by sucking his fingers into his mouth.
“You’re, like, a little kinky.” She chuckles and so does he.
“You literally just did the same as me!”
“I was trying not to make a mess of your sheets!”
“I can wash ‘em.” He laughs more, and then tucks some hair behind her ear. “Tell me what you’re thinking.”
“I’m thinking you like me a little more than I thought.”
“A lot more, actually. You like me too?”
“Yeah.” She smiles. “I like you, Harry.”
“Thank god, I didn’t want this to be awkward at work.”
“Just don’t try to get busy with me in the bunk room. I will not contribute to that.”
“Listen, when you’re tired and desperate, it’s not such a bad place to get frisky.”
“I’ll take your word for it.” She rolls her eyes. “Could I use your bathroom quick? And then if you don’t mind, I would actually love to sleep a bit more.”
“Of course! And yeah, that sounds good.”
She uses his bathroom, and he cleans himself up. He offers some pajama pants a tee shirt, and she happily accepts. She changes and crawls back into bed with him. He spoons her, and rubs at her side, giving her a kiss once in a while on the back of her neck. As she falls asleep in his arms she thinks she had never been so thankful to work on a holiday in her life.

halo, spartans, and rvb deep lore
so
Tumblr media
you wanna incorporate spartan lore into your rvb fic
okay then, first thing’s first: what you have to know, first and foremost, about the spartans (beyond a genuinely stupid amount of backstory) is that everything about the SPARTAN-II Program (not to be confused with the original ORION Project, or the subsequent SPARTAN-III or SPARTAN-IV Programs) from start to finish is fucking buckwild
tw: child abuse, kidnapping, mental abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, human experimentation, human rights violations, medical experimentation, child soldiers, slavery, murder, torture, ptsd, war, genocide, psychosis, non-consensual body modification, suicide (i missed that one, sorry), let me know if i missed anything
ORION Project (retroactively termed “SPARTAN-I Program”)
okay so picture this, it’s 2494. humans have been out there, colonizing space for a good couple hundred years. there’s a Unified Earth Government. there’s a United Nations Space Command. everything still runs on capitalism, and the military is basically the government. now up until now, because Capitalism, earth and its closest neighbors (the Inner Colonies) have been demanding more and more from the poorer and sparser working class Outer Colonies with diminishing returns for the Outer Colonies because space capitalism, and it’s been getting progressively worse and worse for decades. it’s very star wars, slow decay of the republic, because CAPITALISM IN SPACE, folks! so, 2494, after decades of trying to negotiate better conditions and compromises with a government that doesn’t listen and doesn’t care, finally the demands for independence start pouring in in earnest. these demands are, of course, denied, with prejudice. fighting breaks out; it’s unofficial war. the Insurrection. unbeknownst to you, humble average joe trying to live your life without GODDAMN SPACE CAPITALISM, the unsc (specifically ONI, the office of naval intelligence, which is basically the space CIA, who does all the really shady shit) saw the writing on the wall a few years before and put restarted the efforts to biochemically augment regular soldiers for more effective use. super soldiers, ya dig?
(full disclosure: they’ve been trying this for years, decades, like a century and a half or some shit but it never really worked out and last time they tried it, in like 2321 or some shit, they scrapped it and shove the initial volunteers back into regular duty and they all ended up mysteriously dying.)
so, super soldiers. stronger, faster, enhanced sight and hearing, enhanced brain function, the works. and work it does, sort of. the first 65 test subjects are a success, and deployed in 2496 because the Insurrection is picking up steam and actually winning battles and taking control of new territory and using spies and just basically freaking the shit out of the military. another batch goes into the works. things get worse. bombings continue, insurrectionists grow bolder, spies become harder to root out, civilians get caught in the crossfire, hatred for the unsc continues to grow. at its height, there are 300 active duty ORIONs, and they’re good at what they do, but it’s not enough. because of War and also Science, the ORIONs also become a game of diminishing returns, most of them growing too traumatized, too jaded, too sympathetic to the insurrection, or too sick (physically, mentally, and even genetically) to continue. 2502: the leader of the Secessionist Union is assassinated by the ORIONs, the Union falls apart but the Insurrection only gains strength from a martyr, and honestly when does any military actually stay smart and efficient? the ORION Project is quietly retired in 2506 and the remaining 165 active duty ORIONs reintegrated back into regular unsc.
(another quick aside here: the Insurrection refers less to any specific group of insurgents and more of the overall cause of independence from earth imperialism. the Secessionist Union was the most visible, organized, and effective of the bunch, having gather about a dozen world initially to all petition for sovereignty from the Unified Earth Government.)
(fun fact: ODSTs (Orbital Drop Shock Troopers) were modeled off of the ORIONs and became the most badass and effective soldiers in the UNSC, barring SPARTANs themselves.)
(another one: due to all the biochemical and genetic fuckery, the ORIONs who didn’t develop ridiculous scary physical/genetic health problems, or completely understand mental health problems, really did kind of end up like captain america-y super soldiers and continued serving well past when a baseline human would have retired or just gotten Too Old For This Shit. Avery Johnson, a notable and dare i say Iconic character from the Halo franchise, was an ORION and that led him to surviving: all of the ORION Project fuckery missions, the Harvest incident AKA: When Humans Met Covenant And It Went Poorly, the Fall of Reach AKA: When The Covenant After 20 Years Of War Found And Glassed Earth’s Next-Door Neighbor Signalling The Beginning Of The End Cuz When They Found Earth It Was All Gonna Be Fucking Over, the Battle of Installation 04 AKA: Halo 1, and the first Battle of Earth and the Battle of Installation 05 AKA: Halo 2. he was a key leader in the Human-Covenant Alliance following the Great Schism and participated in the Battles for the Ark and Installation 08 AKA: When The Elites Realized Their Religious Leaders Were Full Of Shit And Started Their Own Rebellion And Teamed Up With Humanity To Stop The Flood From Spreading Or The Halo Installations From Firing And Wiping Out All Sentient Life In The Galaxy AKA: Halo 3. also, the biochemical fuckery kept the flood, aka: space zombies via spores, from infecting him. the monitor, also known as epsilon’s ball-form, shot and killed johnson with his lazer face at the end of halo 3. i cried. this badass motherfucker survived like legit 55 years of war to be taken out by an a.i. who can’t wear pants having an existential crisis.)
SPARTAN-II Program (spiritual successor to ORION Project)
2510. shit’s been fucked for awhile. the Unified Earth Government and the United Nations Space Command have been fighting an unofficial civil war for like 15 years. people are Tired, they want the war to end, but they don’t want to admit that they’re in the wrong, so they decide to throw more firepower at the problem. enter Dr. Catherine Halsey, a motherfucking 18 year old civilian child prodigy scientist, I DIDN’T EVEN FUCKING KNOW THAT SHE WAS THAT FUCKING YOUNG WHAT THE F U C K, walks up to the Vice Admiral of ONI (remember, Space CIA, alllll the shady shit) and says “hey i got an idea let’s try super soldiers again but this time it’s Worse” and ONI fucking agree because ONI is Fucked Up and i fucking Hate them, fuck ONI. anyway, it’s “spartan episode 2: attack of the clones” up in here. oh, you think i’m kidding? you think i jest?
“the first problem is,” says arrogant petulant 18 year old catherine halsey who’s never been told no a day in her life because she’s just So Smart, she’s Emily Grey up in this bitch but without the perky attitude or respect for people’s wishes when they say they don’t want a robot arm, “the problem with the orions was that the genetic fuckery y’all did was done all willy-nilly, y’all didn’t even make sure the soldiers would be compatible. now you’re got avery johnson, real like Captain America, running around but also orions who retired and had children need to give their kids special injections on the regular to keep their genes where and doing what they’re supposed to be. so you gotta genetically test all your subjects before you fuck with their dna.”
“okay, that makes sense,” says oni, “go on.”
“right so the second problem is,” says halsey, who will eventually become pretty much the worst that Humanity has to offer to the Universe, in my opinion, “that some of your knock-off super soldiers developed a little touch of the ol’ ptsd, or caught some Feelings about the insurrection maybe being Not Wrong, so we gotta make sure to brainwash—i’m sorry, did i say brainwash, i meant indoctrinate—all your slaves—i mean subjects!—in Military Values and Warfare because who wants super soldiers with empathy. so they’ve gotta be pretty young, which ties in nicely with the genetic component which requires they be prepubescent. neat, right?”
“brainwash children,” oni replies, nodding and making notes, “got it. anything else?”
“ah ha!” says halsey, whom i hate possibly more than any other fictional character across the board. “so! after we find these really genetically specific children who are all in the single digits, all possessing not only genetic but superior physical and mental capabilities, and after we kidnap them and replace them with flash clones—which, i’ll remind you, are illegal to create because flash-cloning speeds up the development of the cloned fetus to such degrees that they almost unfailingly develop compounding biological and congenital defects that cannot be corrected us thus almost all of them end up dying awful painful deaths—so we abduct the children and replace them with clones almost guaranteed to die quickly, ruining untold hundreds of lives in the process, we’ll physically, mentally, and emotionally abuse them into compliance and ruin any chance of them functioning in society by turning them into child soldiers. and then! and this is the really fun part, and then when they’re fourteen we’ll subject them to the most despicable violations of their body that i can possibly concoct using chemical, biological, and physical let’s call them ‘augmentations’ to make them grow obscenely large and strong without their consent because they’re slaves—soldiers!—and really who needs consent or ethics or basic human rights, amirite?”
“entirely,” oni says, nodding in agreement. “so what’s the survival rate on that, by the by?”
“hmm?” asks halsey, distracted by her own fucking evil brilliance, “oh right yeah well you originally okayed that i steal 150 kids from their parents but then i added in that whole flash-clone bullshit to soothe my own almost non-existent conscience so you bumped it down to 75 and then, like, 30 of them won’t survive the augmentation process at all, and then like a dozen of them will become so painfully and tortuously disabled that we’ll just kick them out of the project—you guys can find a use for those wash-outs, right?—and like a couple of them will probably kill themselves so like…” halsey trails off, counting her fingers silently. “33, maybe? did i count that right? yeah so like between thirty and thirty-five i’d say. less than half, to be sure! that’s cool right?”
“…….sounds good to me!” oni agrees enthusiastically, because they’re irredeemable pieces of shit. “what happens next?”
what happens next, dear readers, is that after all the children are kidnapped when they’re six years old in 2517, they’re treated like *waves hand in above direction* THAT, until 2525, when the planet of Harvest was discovered by the Covenant. you know, that alien coalition that decides to wipe humanity out of existence for Religious Reasons. i won’t get into the politics of the covenant because even after all of this i think that’s Too Much, but suffice it to say that the leaders of the Covenant were Full of Shit and They Knew It Too. so, harvest happens, and Covies go on a decades long rampage, and the insurrection doesn’t so much die as it gets sort of pushed to the side because Genocidal Aliens. so the Covies are glassing planets left and right—despite the Cole Protocol which states that any UNSC or civilian ship must not make any direct slipspace jumps from Covie engagements to any human populated planet because they can track slipspace vectors and calculate where you’ll come out, and also if you have to evacuate then you damn well wipe all your data and activate the ship’s self-destruct so they can’t find more humans to mercilessly murder—and with the addition of Genocidal Aliens to the mix, the SPARTAN-II Program speeds the fuck up and introduces Project MJOLNIR.
MJOLNIR Power Assault Armor, a high-powered 1000 lb. combat exoskeleton system designed not just to protect, but to enhance the already substantial physical capabilities of the spartans (all now somewhere in the upper six-foot range, to my memory) and to house fully-formed smart a.i.
(a.i… are a whole ‘nother deal. quick an dirty version: a ‘dumb’ a.i. is programmed like any other and can continue on as it is pretty much as long as its physical contain can. a ‘smart’ a.i., on the other hand, is based on an actual human brain but due to the limited nature of its processing matrix, the longer it operates, the less ‘space’ it has in its ‘brain’. a smart a.i. times out around seven years, sometimes before, because it literally thinks itself to death. once it times out, they call it rampancy. remember that term? yeah, it’s cuz season 10 talked about the four stages of rampancy, which can be compared to human psychosis, at which point the a.i., having been gathering incomprehensible amounts of data for seven years, begins to break down and dip into, kind of, debilitating amounts of emotion. sigma wanted to achieve the meta phase because it was the closest he could find to being human again, but he needed all of the fragments collected again because merging together might make them a full a.i. and thus closer to achieving, or i suppose, regaining full personhood.)
right anyway mjolnir armor, the distinctive halo armor, makes spartans absurdly strong and difficult to kill. not invincible, but damn fucking good. the spartans, along with the ODSTs, run of the mill marines, the cole protocol, and human refusal to just lay down and die pretty much holds the line against total annihilation by the Covenant for *checks watch* twenty-seven goddamn years. for twenty-seven years the Covenant sprinted around the galaxy squashing every human colony and settlement they could find but couldn’t find earth or much of the inner colonies. two, three generations of people who never knew anything but war in some form or another is pretty fucked up, guys.
anyway so, fast forward through, Yikes, All Of That to 2552. 2552 was a big year yall. ngl, like twelve huge battles all happened pretty much concurrently right now, but wrt the spartans: the Covenant found Reach, which was pretty much Earth’s next-door neighbor (and, incidentally, where all the spartan ii’s were “trained”) and they found it right when all of the spartans had been recalled back to it for a super secret mission. most of them died. john-117, master chief, and his buddy (i……wanna say linda?) made it off the planet with cortana the a.i., kickstarting the first halo game, while a little group got up to their own crazy space-magic shenanigans that i……i honestly can’t even get into right now, i just can’t, it’s all so fuckin weird and spans like seven books and i honestly don’t remember most of it. so, master chief and cortana the a.i. who is based on halsey’s brain because jen taylor is a hell of a voice actress, go to halo and meet the space zombies and stop halo from firing and killing everyone by blowing it up and that’s basically halo 1 for you. same thing happens in halo 2, except now there’s alien politics and you also get to play as a sangheili soldier who comes to the startling realization that his religious leaders are Full of Shit and starts a civil war. halo 3 is all the crazy shit happening on earth and also more alien politics and honestly i enjoyed that game least so i don’t remember much of it tbh. like i said, most of the spartans die on reach, but john and his buddy who might be linda live, as well as a little handful, one of whom is definitely named fred.
SPARTAN-III Program (AKA: "Make the units better with new technology. Make more of them. And make them cheaper.“) (god everything about this universe is so fucking buckwild)
the spartan ii’s were a resounding success but there literally being less than three-dozen kinda cut down on their usefulness, and also halsey refused to train a second batch of spartans because of her goddamn “age requirement” and like i’m not complaining that more children weren’t abducted and experimented on but halsey really was a fucking moron really just out here to stroke her own damn ego, jesus fucking christ. not, of course, that the spartan iii’s were MUCH better, mind you. so, 2531, six years into the war with the covenant and an equal amount of time without a second batch of spartan ii’s, this asshole called ackerson goes, “pfft, i can make more of these fuckers and i can make them cheaper and i won’t have to kidnap kids, who’s with me?”
and ONI said, “wait we’re not kidnapping anymore?” and it looks kinda put out cuz it likes that shady shit.
“nah,” says ackerson, waving a hand, “we’ll just recruit orphans from glassed planets who have a grudge against the covenant. like, ya know, eight and nine years olds and shit. it’ll be fine.”
so the first batch of spartan iii’s was produced in 2531: alpha company, 300 strong, all of whom survived the augmentation process at the age of twelve because it, like, got refined and dulled down a little or something, it’s been awhile. so alpha company is doing good, real good, trained by a the guy who trained the spartan ii’s and even one of the spartan ii’s themself.
(kurt-051, also known as kurt ambrose, real name kurt trevelyan because the spartan program literally fucked him up so bad he couldn’t remember his family name so ackerson just fucking gave him one, oh my gooood. anyway, so kurt was the leader of green team and they were sent on a mission but ONI fucking, they fuckin sabotaged his jetpack so that it malfunctions while in space so that he’s presumed dead but actually ONI just abducted him so he could train the spartan iii’s without halsey knowing about it because MILITARY POLITICS I GUESS?)
right anyway so alpha company, they do good, they do good, and then nine months after deployment in 2537 all of them (with a few exceptions who got pulled out to do other shit in other branches) get wiped out in Operation: PROMETHEUS, a mission to destroy a Covie shipyard or whatever. ONE-HUNDRED PERCENT CASUALTY RATE. okay, so, this is fine, we’ll try again. 2539, beta company, 300 strong, we’ll train them even harsher than the spartan ii’s were, drill them even more on unit cohesion. what happens, can you fucking guess? 2545, DING DONG, YOU ARE WRONG, same thing fucking happens in Operation: TORPEDO. only two survivors of that massacre, and the handfuls who weren’t sent on the suicide mission en masse.
in halo: reach, the game that bridge halos 3 and 4, carter, emile, jun, and thom (who was the original noble six, whom you, the player, replace in-game after he dies) are spartan iii’s from alpha company. kat and the player’s character, spartan-b312, are from beta company. jorge is an og spartan ii. there were also rumors of a couple different teams of iii’s helping evacuate civilians from reach at the same time. the LONEWOLF Headhunters were also spartan iii’s: basically two-person assassin teams.
(also, just to clarify, because the appeal of spartan iii was that it was cheaper, not all, and not even many, of the spartan iii’s were issued mjolnir armor, because making a single suit cost as much as making a full battleship. because space capitalism.)
alright, so, gamma company, third time’s the charm. 330, average age of six years old, all of them survived augmentation in 2551 and were shipped out only a few weeks after the fall of reach, so around december of 2552/january of 2553, maybe. NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT PROJECT CHRYSANTHEMUM! Project CHRYSANTHEMUM was the name given to the NEW AND IMPROVED biological augmentations given to gamma company. you wanna know what makes them new and improved? why, fucking up your brain to make it wayyyyyy more aggressive, resistant to shock, and more able to access the “animal part of the brain in times of shock”! i mean, when you hear “depresses higher reason centers of the brain over time; requires regular doses of [special meds] to be taken to avoid uncontrollable aggression” doesn’t that just fill you with confidence and positivity and something that isn’t homicidal rage?? so yeah in addition to having the body of an adult olympic athlete at fucking twelve years old and stupid fast and three times as strong as a normal soldier, now your brain can’t regulate itself! isn’t that fucking dandy! take your smoothers kids or you might just murder everyone in sight!
delta company was scheduled to be a thing but was likely never put into practice. why they went out of order on the naming i’m not sure.
the spartan-iii program was disbanded after the end of the human-covenant war in 2553 and the remaining spartan ii’s and iii’s were folded into Spartan Operations, which was a brand-spanking new military branch designed specifically for oversight of spartans because…
SPARTAN-IV PROGRAM (AKA: And Look At That, We’re Back To Consenting Adults)
2550. listen yall. shit. shit’s fucked aight? has been for awhile. and like maybe, maybe super soldiers in walking tanks is too much to ask for? maybe just regular super soldiers, but ones that are already full-grown? yeah let’s go back to the drawing board on that one. yeah let’s just do some unauthorized testing—whoops! 10% survival rate, that bites. let’s just, uh, not tell anyone about that—
“hey there,” says lieutenant commander musa, former spartan ii candidate who was tortuously disabled by the augmentation process and carries a grudge the size of pluto against catherine halsey.
“we weren’t doing anything!” shouts oni, because fuck you, oni.
“i wanna help make more spartans,” says musa. “i hate halsey with every fiber of my being but spartans are doing good work, important work, and i wanna help them do it but only if they’re consenting adults.”
oni looks at that latest batch of spartan iii’s who, due to circumstances, had to go off their smoothers during a planetary battle and freaked out everyone and their mother. “yeah good call.”
so with ackerson dead and halsey fucking finally arrested for war crimes, musa and jun (spartan iii and only survivor of noble team from halo: reach) take the lead on the spartan iv’s, the candidates of which are pooled from fully-grown human adults in a variety of military branches, from grizzled veterans to promising young soldiers with experience under their belts.
2553, the first batch of 145 iv’s is live, include My Girl Commander Sarah Palmer who kicks ass and takes names. 2554, second class is initiated. SPARTAN-IV Program is headquartered in a dedicated facility on Mars; spartan iv’s are trained in a top-secret facility orbiting an unnamed dwarf planet.
as previously mentioned, spartans gain their own military branch, Spartan Operations, and remaining ii’s and iii’s are offered to be folded into the new branch. many accept, but some decline in favor of non-combat roles. hundreds of spartans are assigned to the UNSC Infinity, literally the biggest fucking ship in human history, i love it so much it’s great. in halo: 4, a big part of the plot is that john was missing for like four years and when he’s found again there’s this fuck-off big ship filled with people calling themselves spartans who are also fuck-off big but also Strangers. anyway i love the spartan iv’s and anyone who didn’t like spartan ops or halo: infinity are cordially invited to me in the fucking pit.
SO! i’ve been at this for literal hours and am going to bed now! hope you learned something helpful, i’m sure i forgot a lot of shit, not even including all the shit that i left out on purpose because it’s two in the goddamn morning.

Where I've Been the Past Couple Days
Hello guys! Now I don't post too many personal things here, but this is something I didn't know and it almost cost my life
Tumblr media
As a young woman, I thought UTIs were something that was very common among girls my age because we don't quite know how to take care of our "down there" hygiene, don't know how to clean up after sex, etc. Well turns out I was wrong. If you let a UTI go on for too long it can make the infection spread to higher places like your bladder or your kidneys. Fun fact: the infection can spread to other places like your lungs 🙃
Because I didn't think a uti was a big deal, I let it go on for 2 weeks, had the infection spread, spent the past 3 days in the ICU, and during my initial visit to the er I actually passed out and was unresponsive enough for them to call a code on me.
So yeah kids. If something seems minor and like you can take care of it at home, go to the doctor in case because it could be a major infection that will cause you hell 🙃🙃
This has been my public service announcement
~Admin Red
***EDIT
I was discharged this morning so I'm perfectly fine now! I just figured I should get that out there because no one ever told me that a UTI could result in things like that, so I figured I would try to help anyone else who gets them regularly like I do to realize the dangers of them. Part of my condition was an allergic reaction to some medicine I was taking as well so it was just two "minor" things that resulted in me almost... Well ya know. I didn't know how serious my situation was until I was discharged and my mom told me what happened the first night I was there because all I remember about that night was arriving in the hospital and passing out after about an hour. The rest is a blur, I don't even remember the pain of getting three IVs injected into my arms and one into my neck.
I am kind of grateful for this situation happening because it will help me improve as a writer for certain experiences because I went through it.
BONUS: I sassed the doctors the whole fucking time tho. I might have been dying but I do remember sassing the doctor when she said she had to put an IV in my neck, when I literally filled an entire vomit bag, and when I was getting transferred to ICU. I don't remember the pain of being stuck but I remember a nurse tilting my bed upside down and wiping my neck off. When I asked if she was putting an IV in and she said yes I go "oh yaaaaaaaaay." Even on death's door ya girl still jokes✌️
***EDIT 2
They found a 1-1.5 cm cyst on my left ovary while I was in the hospital and they asked me to get it checked up on. For those of you who don’t know, many young women get one during their “time of the month” due to the weird up and down hormones young women get. Anyway, because I was on my time atm when they first found it, they scheduled an ultrasound to see if it was still there when I wasn’t during that time. I still have it. I’ve been told it’s not something extremely serious to be worried about, but it could be the reason for my sudden weight gain last year. I kept a steady weight for most of my life, only losing 3 lbs when I tried to lose weight, and suddenly I gained 30 lbs within 6 months without majorly changing my diet or workout routine. Initially I thought it was from my hypothyroidism, but ovarian cysts can also cause that. I’ll try to keep y’all updated on my health because damn has it gone downhill over the past couple years.
***EDIT 3
I have had two different appointments with a gynecologist since then and the cyst is still on my ovary. They had a hard time finding the right one to check if there was one there, but we still know that it’s on my left. My first appointment, I got the ultrasound because apparently we need to test something 3 different times to see if it’s there even though it’s been there every time we’ve tested but was unable to talk to the doctor because some lady started having her baby. During the next appointment he said that it’s still there so I am now going to be on two birth controls, one for birth control purposes and one for fixing cyst purposes. I was told to call him if the pain from the cyst ever gets any worse. I’ve only been on medicine for almost two months, but I feel like I should call the doctor. I’ve gotten my period, including what started today AFTER IT ENDED LAST WEEK, 4 times since I started my medicine. It happens every other week for about 5 days and the pain on my left side is slowly getting worse every time.
On a bright note I haven’t had a single hint of a uti since I went into the hospital and actually take care of myself now.

Bruising Waters Pt. 3
Let There Be Keith! (Lance and Keith get their own section because it’s the longest bonding moment; I swear these two are going to be the death of me)
Link to AO3 (for full fic directly)  Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4  Part 5
“Alright my boy, I need you to wake up now so I can check you over!”
Lance groaned as Coran’s chipper voice assaulted his ears.  The fins on his head twitched irritably.  “Ugh, come on Coran.  What time even is it?  5 more minutes, please.”
“Why, it’s rather early morning as you paladins would say!”  Coran hummed as he started setting various instruments up.  Lance groaned and tried to bury himself further into his sponge pillow, tail flapping weakly in the water, splashing a little towards Coran in protest.  He rolled a gurney next to Lance’s tank.  “Hmm, yes, I think Allura’s probably the only one awake right now.  Though, Shiro should be joining her soon!  Now, up you get!  I’ve let your gills sit long enough.  The medicine I’ve been giving you will only do so much, you know.  I think your motor skills are back enough to give them a thorough cleaning.”
Lance sighed, but finally rolled over and consented to let Coran help him onto the gurney.  A couple of blankets and pillows were already set out for him on the makeshift bed.  He settled into them as they soaked up the excess water, dampening slightly but not in an uncomfortable way.  Coran handed him some small towels, hot water, and an altean salve with instructions to be careful with his neck.  Lance smiled fondly at Coran’s nagging.  He set to work while Coran took his vitals and checked the infection.
Lance winced as he gently cleaned the flaps with the water, then dabbed the salve Coran had given him onto his gills.  His face twisted in disgust at the sticky, crusted fluid that caked the insides of the sensitive flaps.  He pulled the cloth away, hissing in pain.  His gills ached.  The lightest touch sent a shock of pain pounding through his neck and skull.  He grit his teeth as he continued to clean, turning over the events of the past week in his mind while Coran worked.
It had been about a week since he’d first collapsed in the shower and taken to the pods.  He’d been in the healing pod for a day, then slept fitfully for 3 more days before waking up to Coran and Allura.  It had been another day before he saw Hunk, and the next day was when he was there for Pidge.  Between the sedatives and infection, Lance hadn’t had much time to take care of his scales or fins himself.  As far as Lance was concerned, he’d slept enough in the past week to last a month.  It was getting irritating.  Coran told him that Shiro and Keith were both in the Medbay regularly, but so far Lance had yet to be awake for either of them.  He huffed, annoyed at the thought.  Lance gently peeled back another flap, stroking the sensitive fins and hissing sharply.
The medicine Coran had running through an IV stuck in his right arm was helping his gills, but he was right.  They needed a thorough cleaning.  The medicine had removed the build-up in his throat, but bits of the gooey substance had crusted in his gills and the skin around them was still tender and inflamed.  Lance sighed.  The good news was, he was well enough that he wouldn’t be sleeping all day.  According to Coran, he could start cleaning his gills every morning and evening.
Lance yelped at a particularly tender spot on his neck, dropping the towel and whining pitifully.  Coran frowned at him in sympathy, “I’m sorry Lance, but better late than never.”  Lance grimaced but reached down to pick up the cloth he’d dropped.
“Yeah, I know.  That still doesn’t make it any easi-”  Lance cut off, blinking as he heard the door to the Medbay slide open with a soft hiss.  His jaw dropped when he saw a familiar figure nervously step into the room.
“Keith?”  Lance gasped.  A grin broke over his face as Keith made eye contact with him.  He waved enthusiastically, beckoning Keith over.  Keith’s eyes widened, surprised at seeing Lance awake.  He returned Lance’s bright grin with a small smile of his own and walked over, hands pressed into his pockets.
“Hey!  I thought you’d be busy training this early in the morning!”
Keith flushed and shrugged.  “I mean, normally, yeah, but..”  He rubbed the back of his head, embarrassed.
Coran popped up behind Keith piping in.  “Oh no!  Keith has been in here every morning waiting for you to wake up.  We told you the others have been worried.”  He gave Lance a reprimanding look.  Keith flailed his arms slightly, rocking forward at the sudden proximity and volume.
Lance burst out laughing at Keith’s startled expression.  He shot Lance a dark scowl.  It was a few seconds before he calmed himself down, chuckling.  Lance smiled sheepishly at Coran once his laughter had subsided.  “Okay, Coran.  Yes, I get it.  I know.”  He laughed.  Keith frowned at the exchange, eyes flickering back and forth between them with a puzzled expression.
Coran nodded, satisfied and left the room.  Lance turned his attention back to Keith and smiled.  “So,” he drawled, leaning back “What have you been up to this past week, my man?”
Keith snorted.  He sat down in the chair next to Lance, crossing his arms leisurely and kicking one leg up to bounce his foot against his knee.  “Allura’s been working us all on different missions or training.  Says we need to keep morale up for everyone; act like nothing’s wrong.”  He scowled.
Lance swept his eyes over Keith, taking in his expression.  “Were you,”  Lance sucked in a breath as Keith glanced at him.  “Were you really in here so often?”
Keith uncrossed his arms and fidgeted slightly.  “I- Yeah, I was.  Coran’s right.”  He said softly, “We were worried about you.  I- We care about you.”  Keith looked away.
Lance paused, “I know we’ve already talked about the whole Garrison thing before.”  He laughed, sucking in a shaky breath.  “Yeah, that was an embarrassing conversation.  It’s not everyday you’re forced to tell your self-proclaimed rival that the reason you act like an idiot is because of petty jealousy.”
Keith scowled.  “You’re not an idiot.”  He seethed, face reddening in anger,  “Okay, maybe the jealousy was dumb.  But Iverson was a load of crap, and so were those other teachers!  You’re plenty talented and vital to our team-”
Lance broke Keith off, waving his arms in Keith’s face and stifling a giggle.  “Keith, Keith woah.  I know dude.  I agree.  I just, you know I consider us good friends, right?  Like, I tease you a lot, but I’ve never actually hated you.  Not even at the Garrison.  In fact, I’d hope we’re pretty close.”
Keith’s shoulders loosened and he sank back against the chair.  He smiled softly at Lance.  “Yeah, I know.  And same, for me, I mean.”
Lance smiled, happy.  “That’s good to hear, Mullet.”  He leaned back into the pillows, picking up the salve and dabbing at his neck again.  “Hunk’s already told me all the latest gossip.”  He smirked, wiggling his eyebrows at Keith who groaned goodnaturedly.  Keith smiled, but Lance could see the edges of it didn’t quite reach his eyes.  Lance’s grin faded.  He hummed, thinking for a moment, then put the medicine and towel down in his lap with a sigh.
“I really should apologize.”  Keith blinked at him in confusion.  “Pidge said I snapped at you when I was, you know.”  Lance gestured vaguely, then continued.  “Anyways, my mom would absolutely have my tail if she found out I’d snapped my teeth at a member of my pod.  So, I guess it was good she wasn’t here to witness that.”  His fins drooped.  “Sorry about that.”
Keith hesitated, then reached over placed his hand tentatively on Lance’s.  “We know you miss your mom Lance.  It’s okay to miss your family.”  He squeezed Lance’s hand.  Lance glanced gratefully at Keith with a watery smile.  He sniffed and wiped at his eyes.  “It was, really scary seeing you like that Lance.  It must have been even worse for you.  Especially without your family here.”
Keith absent-mindedly rubbed Lance’s knuckles as he croaked out a ‘Thank you.” and composed himself.  His face twisted in confusion as Lance’s words flashed by him again.  “Wait, pod?  What do you mean?”
Lance laughed, flashing Keith another watery smile, eyes glossy with unshed tears.  “It means I did have my family here.”  Keith just blinked at Lance.  “Pod is our term for ‘family group’.”  He explained.  Keith’s eyes widened in understanding, then his face split into a wide grin.
“You’re our family too, Lance.”
“Your space family, you mean.”  Lance snickered as Keith rolled his eyes.
“Fine, I’ll humor you because you’re sick.”
Lance gasped, bringing Keith’s hand to his chest and clutching it between his own.  Keith yelped at the sudden motion.  “Bro.  That’s more than even Pidge would do!”  He sniffed dramatically,  “This is such a beautiful bonding moment.”
Keith huffed grumpily, tugging his hand away.  “You’re never going to let that go, are you?”
“Nope!”  Lance smiled happily, eyes light and warm.  Keith smiled back, content.
Lance broke eye contact and cleared his throat.  He picked up the cloth and grimaced before starting on his gills again.  “I’m sorry you had to see me like that.  From what Coran described, it couldn’t have been fun for any of you.”
Keith shuddered, closing his eyes.  He didn’t think he’d ever get Lance’s screams out of his head completely.  “Yeah.  I just, I hated seeing you in so much pain.”  Lance tensed but continued working, biting back the urge to hiss at the stinging in his gills as he listened to Keith.  “I had no idea what was going on.  I just knew that your legs were covered in blood from wounds you’d caused yourself, and you were convulsing and burning, just screaming.”  Lance gently lifted a few fins from his tail and hesitantly placed them against Keith’s leg.
“You seemed to be searching for something, too.”  Lance cocked his head at Keith’s words.  Keith looked embarrassed.  “You made these sounds after you transformed, cries like I’d never heard before.  It was like you were seeking us…”  Keith gazed past him, eyes clouded and distant.
Lance’s face flamed, mortification burning in his gut.  What??  He sought out Keith and the others like a, like a guppy!  He made a silent pact as Keith shook himself and turned to Lance.  His eldest brother was never allowed to know about this.  “Sorry,”  He whispered.
Keith shook his head, eyes clear once again.  “It wasn’t your fault.”  He leaned back, watching Lance’s ministrations in fascination, eyes tracking Lance’s claws as they deftly cleaned his gills.  He glanced to the other side and frowned.  “Um, Lance?  I think you missed a spot, up near the back.”
Lance grunted, wincing as his claws scraped a particularly tender area.  “Yeah, I can sort of feel it, but not well enough to find it without scraping myself.”  He bit off a yelp and lowered his hands, panting.  Keith rushed up to stand by him, hands reaching out then pulling back, then reaching out again, as if he wanted to help but was unsure what to do.  He stood there, fidgeting and unsure.
Lance was exhausted.  He just wanted this cleaning to be over already so he could sleep.  But he still had the upper gills to do on both sides, and they were the most sensitive.  Lance gazed forlornly at the medicine in his hands.
Keith’s hands twitched.  “Maybe, I could point out the areas to you?”  Surprise flickered in Lance’s eyes before he tilted his head, contemplating Keith’s suggestion.  Keith pressed on, “Then you wouldn’t have to search the spots out with your claws so much.  I could tell you where to put your hands, and maybe, that would help reduce the scratching?”
“Maybe, but…”  Lance’s eyes flickered to the cloth, then to Keith, and away again.  A rush of emotions swirled through his eyes.  Keith could tell he was contemplating something important, but he had no idea what.  So, he just waited patiently for Lance to come to a decision.  Lance sighed, murmuring, “I don’t know if I have the coordination to follow your instructions any better than my own senses.  And it needs to be done.”  He bit his lip.  The indecision faded and he locked eyes with Keith, expression serious.
“Keith.”  Keith straightened up.  “Do you think, if I showed you how, “  Lance bit his lip, sighing deeply, “That you could do it for me?”
“What?”  Keith squeaked.  He wanted to help Lance, but what if he hurt him further?  Keith wasn’t exactly known for being gentle.
Lance grimaced, “Look, I don’t like people touching my gills.  It’s, well, in my culture it’s a pretty big deal.  A huge deal.  It’s a serious sign of trust between pod members because our necks and gills are so vulnerable.  That’s why Coran didn’t clean them.  But, I really need this done, and I’m completely drained.”  He lifted his head, and Keith froze, mesmerized by the sudden intensity of Lance’s gaze.  “I trust you, Keith.”
Keith’s mouth dropped open and he felt his body go slack.  He could feel tears prickling behind his eyes but he pushed them down, swallowing hard as he stepped forward.  Gently, Keith took the salve and cloth from Lance’s hands.  Lance turned to his side, hesitating for a split second before pulling his fins back and arching his neck so Keith could see the crusted film and the inflamed spots better.  “Be careful.”  He whispered softly.
Keith couldn’t bring himself to speak.  He just moved into position and began tenderly wiping away the white flecks he could see in Lance’s gills.  Lance flinched, tense, then relaxed by degrees as Keith continued his soft strokes.  His nimble fingers made quick work of the first side, softly dabbing at the swelling areas and making sure the coating of the salve was thorough.  When he was done Lance flipped over, now facing Keith; his eyes closed.  Gingerly but quickly, he moved through the rest of Lance’s gills.  He finished the top row then checked over the others, making sure Lance had gotten everything.  When Keith was satisfied, he stepped back and began putting the medicine away.  He disposed of the cloth then turned back around.
Lance was watching him, eyes shining.  “Thank you.”
Keith’s heart swelled.  He smiled, warm and soft as he returned to Lance’s side.  “You’re welcome.”
Keith fidgeted again, hands twitching.  Lance tilted his head curiously.  “There was one other thing I wanted to talk to you about.”  Lance nodded, gesturing for him to continue as he settled back into the blankets and pillows.
Keith sat down and bit his lip.  Lance had trusted him, he could at least give him this in return.  Keith straightened, hands pressed against his legs and locked his eyes on Lance.  “I just wanted to let you know that the whole, “half-human thing”?  I get it.  I mean, it’s not the same.  Our lives have been pretty different, and I’m not trying to say that I know exactly what you’ve been through.  But, I understand the fear.  The need to hide.”  He bit his lip.  “I’m here for you, Lance.  If there’s ever anything you want to talk about.  Your heritage, fitting in with people, maybe feeling, torn between two worlds.”  He looked down at his shaking hands and clasped them tightly.  “Or, if you just wanted to talk about your family, even.  I’d love to hear more about them.”  He felt a smile ghost across his lips, and Keith lifted his head to lock eyes with Lance, earnest.  “I just, I need you to know that I’m here for you.  That I care about you, Lance.  You can come to me about anything, anytime.”
Lance was staring at him with wide eyes and mouth hanging open, tears rolling silently down his cheeks.
Keith began to panic.  “Lance, are you okay?  Did I say something wrong?  What’s-  Oof!”  He was cut off as Lance reached out and yanked him out of the chair to sprawl over him on the bed.  Lance gripped him hard, smiling so wide that his cheeks hurt.  “You’re amazing.  You know that, right?”  His fins pressed against the back of Keith’s calves and his arms enveloped Keith, hugging him tightly against his chest.
Keith froze before collapsing into the hug.  He pulled his legs up, shifting into a more comfortable position.  Keith snaked his arms around Lance, clinging just as hard.  “I’m glad you’re okay.” he whispered, pressing his face into Lance’s shoulder and melting into the embrace.
Lance grinned, burying his smile deeper into Keith’s hair.  “Me too.”

middleground au bc i am alexraven trash
i.
the first thing alex decides when he sets foot back on american soil is that he is never, not for his life, getting on a plane again.
the second thing he decides is that he’s going to find raven.
ii.
“how was vietnam?” she asks, in the out-of-the-way diner in nowhere, california that they’re sitting in.
“hot,” he tells her.  “and --- loud.”  and there were bodies in the trees and the jungle sang with birds until it didn’t and the napalm smelled like laundry detergent mixed with diesel fuel and the dirt crawled with bugs the way it does everywhere but you never notice it until your face is pressed to it and you’re praying you won’t die.  the dog tags around his neck ( his own now, not christopher summers’ ) hung heavy some days and mosquitoes never touched him because of his fever blood and his captain knew he was a killer and a mutant and never said a word about it until it was time to go home.  “how was america?”
“you looked good in your uniform, soldier,” raven replies.
he doesn’t want to give her the satisfaction.  he tries not to give her the satisfaction.  but despite his best efforts he flushes.
“ha!” she crows, pointing.  the diner turns to stare at them.  alex only goes redder.
iii.
“do you know where they were going to take you?” she asks him, lying on the hotel bed across the room from his.
“take me?”
“after vietnam.”
“oh.  no.  --- where?”
“i don’t know yet.  i was asking if you knew.”
“they just told us ‘home.’”  not that he had believed it.  not after the fifth time it was said and he noticed what they all were.
raven’s face goes dark.  “home,” she says.
iv.
“alex,” she says when he gets back from his early morning run.  he does two a day now---can’t sleep past six, so he runs, runs again before he goes to bed so he can actually fall asleep.  “do you know there’s labs?  for mutants?”
it’s sudden.  he half expects her to say, next: that was where they were going to take you.  but she doesn’t.  “yeah,” he says.  he knows his answer won’t surprise her.
“i found one,” she says, after he gets out of the shower.  she’s lying on his bed in the motel room, naked and blue, and he grabs a shirt out of his bag and disappears back into the bathroom to put it on.  when he doesn’t answer, she continues.  “a lab.”
“yeah?” he says.  he doesn’t look at her.  he focuses on his belt.
“yeah.  i’m going there.  tomorrow.”
“where is it?”
“arizona.”
“if we start driving now, we can probably get there in two days.”
she smiles at him.  her teeth are so white against the blue of her face that alex ends up nearly blinded.  he drops onto his bed.  she stares at the ceiling.  he does too.  there’s a crack running along it, his bed to hers.  “let’s go buy a car.”
“i have a car.”
“a car that won’t break down in nevada.”
it’s alex’s turn to snort.
v.
arizona is a shitshow.
they get a couple of kids out alive---they don’t know about the rest of them, because they have to leave them.  raven is busted up.  took most of the punches, dealt most of them out.  her knuckles are swollen.  her feet are bleeding.  her body is covered with bruises he can’t see under the feathering scales covering it.  in the motel room she sits across the room from him and lets him clumsily slap bandages onto the hands of one of the kids, who burned them on the door alex melted on their way out.  she ties her own bandages.  one of the girls is sitting in the corner crying.  her brother’s still inside.
“we have to go back,” alex tells her quietly, alone in the room two days later.
“we can’t,” she says, and he’s starting to get angry but then he sees the muscle in her jaw working, the clench of her fists.  how much it hurts her to say this.
“not right now,” he agrees.
“not right now.”
vi.
here’s how it goes.
they make plans in hole-in-the-wall restaurants and motels with holes in the walls.  alex pretends to be a journalist and distracts clerks long enough for raven to steal permit blueprints and waits in the car with first gear waiting to go while she slips into the bases and checks to make sure the plans aren’t lying.  they fight over the stained showers in the mornings.  they watch the news on the grainy tvs at night.  raven teaches him intelligence-style recon.  alex teaches her how to fold her socks tight enough that she can fit an extra weapon in her bag.
after arizona they develop a better system. raven uses someone else’s face to get in the front door while alex parks the car two miles out and waits for 45 minutes.  it’s a 15-minute run to the building, and then he rips open the back wall to draw security while she breaks into the lab.
they meet in the middle of the building.
here’s how it goes.
alex the long-range weaponry.  alex the wrecking ball.  raven the infiltrator.  raven the scalpel.  the two of them sitting in the car in the parking lot in front of their motel room, tallying wounds.  raven always comes out bleeding, purple with bruises.  after norfolk she lets him support her the twenty feet from the car to the room.  after orlando she starts pretending to fall asleep in the car so he’ll carry her in without making her ask him to.
vii.
alex doesn’t kill.  people die because of him, probably, because sometimes he brings down the side of a building on their heads and sometimes they fuck up and can’t protect everyone.  but he doesn’t kill, not exactly, and raven pays, because that means she has to.
she doesn’t complain.  he doesn’t explain.  they silently agree not to talk about it.
“i’m sorry,” alex says after fort meade, breaking the agreement.
“don’t,“ she tells him.  “just.  save it, alex.“
“let me help you --- ”
“go for a run.“
viii.
in meridian raven makes alex laugh in the middle of swallowing a mouthful of water, and the liquid burns its way up through his sinuses and drips down his face from his mouth and nose all over his food.
“oh my god,“ raven says, watching him sputter and cough.  “that is disgusting.“
alex hits the table with his fist and points at his throat indignantly, shoulders shuddering.
“you are not dying,“ raven informs him.
he keeps coughing into his eggs, giving her a reproachful look across the table.
“yes, it would kill me to pretend to be concerned,“ she says, even though that wasn’t what he was going to say.  “you’re still going to eat that, aren’t you?“
“i hate you,“ he wheezes.  “probably.”
ix.
“how was vietnam really?“ raven asks, lying against alex’s side and eating half a burger while they watch coverage of war protests in dc.
“i hated it,“ he says.  “i feel a lot better about... this.“
she points at the tv.  “you want to go to one of those?“
“i don’t think they’re gonna want me there.“
“let’s go anyway.“
x.
things go sideways again when they go back to arizona.  when alex is powered up and firing bullets can’t really touch him; they explode before they get too close.  but neither of them has any special resistance to bullets at short distance, and raven catches one to the side while she’s in the process of disarming one of the guards.  the blast doesn’t register with him over the rest of the chaos, but when she doesn’t come to help him release the limb restraints on the test subjects, he realizes she’s still standing in the door of the lab room, leaning into the wall as red drips to the floor beneath her, the fingers of her hand wrapped loosely around the grip of a stolen gun.
“no,“ she says when he starts towards her, and waves the gun. “go away.  i’m --- i’m covering the door.  keep going.“
alex swears and starts tearing at the cuffs.  a gunshot sounds by the doorway.  he doesn’t look back.  knows it’s her gun. “can everybody walk?” he asks.  silence.  “good.  we’re gonna lead you out.”
“i don’t think she can walk,“ says one of the boys from the end of the room, pointing at raven.
“she can walk,“ alex tells him.
“go,” raven says, when he starts herding them past her.  he stops.  “i’ll cover the rear.”
“rav --- mystique.“
“go,“ she repeats.
alex goes.
he gets them past the destroyed wreck of the fences he burned through on his way in.  “run,” he says, and turns around.  “run, okay?  just --- run, don’t stop.  there’s a car two miles out, there’s money in it.  run.”
they start running forward.  he starts running back.
“you are so stupid, alex,” raven tells him when she sees him.  “you are, you are --- “
“i’m so stupid,“ he finishes, and drags her upwards, wincing when she makes a strangled noise of pain.  her blood is all over his hands.  he lifts her into his arms, and she’s heavy with muscle, but he starts walking.
“i’m going to kill you,” she tells him, and squeezes off a shot over his shoulder.  he can’t check to see if it hit anyone.  “i told you to go.”
“just cover the rear,” he says.  “you said you were going to cover the rear.”
xi.
“raven, we need to go to the doctor,“ alex tells her.
she doesn’t reply.  there’s blood all over the motel sheets, and the backseat of the car, and his shirt is black, but it’s sticking wetly to his chest.  his heart is pounding in his chest, and he thinks he’s starting to panic.  he doesn’t do so well with this much blood.  he doesn’t do so well with the knowledge that maybe raven is going to die tonight.  he doesn’t know what life without raven looks like, these days.
“raven,“ he says, voice cracking like he’s still fifteen and going through growth spurts.
her skin seems chalky under the blue scales, somehow.  her eyes don’t open.
“raven.“
nothing.
xii.
the first few nights after alex carries raven into a vet’s office an hour before opening and starts begging, he checks into a different motel every night, traveling north in tiny steps.  they break into utah on thursday and he runs out of pain medication on friday.  he watches the news alone while she dozes through the infection fever.
they’re out of money.  next friday they’ll be out of antibiotics.  after they get to salt lake city alex sells the car to solve those problems and starts looking for a job.  he doesn’t know how raven has been getting their money before this.  he’s never asked, and she’s never shown any inclination to tell him.  he’s pretty sure it wasn’t like this.
then again, he’s pretty sure raven wouldn’t’ve gotten into the situation he’s gotten them into in the first place.  the news in arizona is reporting mystique’s presence.  he can’t help but think he’s really fucked up.
“would you have done this?” he asks.
“i would have listened to me when i said to go,” she tells him.
he doesn’t know whether or not to believe her.
xiii.
they stay in salt lake city for three months.  raven uses his face when they’re not together, because they’re looking for two people, not one.  when they are together she switches between a number of men’s faces, because they’re looking for a woman and a man.  he works a construction job.  the wound in raven’s side knits together, and then smooths over, a dark, raised knot on her side, mostly hidden by the scales that close over it.
“next time,” she says, “leave me.  i had a plan.”
“next time,“ he tells her, “don’t get shot.”
xvi.
“if you take me to the vet’s again,“ she says on the way to tacoma, washington in a new, beat-down sedan that has one green door and one blue door, “i will kill you.”
“i saw it in a movie,” he replies.  “it seemed like a good idea.”
“was it in a movie about a bank robbery?“
“ --- i won’t do it again, okay?“
xv.
“no new leads,“ says raven, and climbs into bed next to him, draping herself dramatically over his chest.  “they’ve gone to ground.“
“if i pretend to know what that means, will you get your elbow out of my solar plexus.“
“it means we spent too long in salt lake city,“ she answers, appearing not to have heard the second part of the sentence.  “i need a new string to pull on.”
“talked to magneto recently?“
“no.  but i’m sure he knows it’s me.“  destroying the labs, she means, and he knows it.  it’s been four years, and twelve labs.  thirteen if you count arizona twice, which he does.  she’s been so careful to keep his face off the lab cameras.  disabling them before he gets in.
she hasn’t asked for anything from him that he hasn’t volunteered.  she’s left the door open for him all this time.  he could walk away.  have this little terrorist half-decade of his life be nothing more than a phase that he gets to leave if he decides he doesn’t like it anymore.  he rests his chin against the top of her head.  there will be no grand gestures to show her he doesn’t regret it, because he can’t change faces like she can and it’s stupid for them to start showing his.
“if anybody had a lead...”
raven hums against his neck.  “maybe.”
he doesn’t regret it.
xvi.
in the early days of planning, alex dreams in blueprints.  as they get closer he breathes the knowledge of pain that isn’t his.  by the night before they go, he never knows how to sleep, remembering the faces of the people they’ve broken out together.  the hollows of their cheekbones.  the bruises on their thin arms.  the track marks on the insides of their elbows, the drugged stupor in their eyes.
he knows raven doesn’t sleep the night before either.  after a while they stop pretending.  they spend the nights before they hit a lab sitting on the roof of the car, staring at the stars above the motel parking lot in whatever state they’re in.
xvii.
life inside a 300-sqare-foot room runs like this --- alex wakes up plastered to raven’s back and crawls out of bed, trying not to her up.  he pulls on running shoes and tries to be quiet when he sneaks out the door, but it always creaks, and she always sits up and gives him a look.  when he gets back she’s always in the shower, so he sits on the spare bed and does cooldown stretches while she makes him wait.
they bump shoulders on her way out of the bathroom and his way in.  in a 300-square-foot room they bump shoulders constantly.  she yells at him through the shower door about taking 45 minutes.  he puts mustard on his eggs and she tells him he’s gross, but she’s started dipping her fries in milkshakes too.
life in a 300-square-foot room runs like this --- most of the day they don’t say anything and in the evenings when they’re watching the news they talk about nothing.  after they turn the news off they go to sleep with alex’s palm resting over the nearly-invisible bullet scar.
xviii.
“hit the floor,” he says, as his chest begins to glow.
“oh my god, havok, get over yourself,” she says, and swings around a corner and out of sight, ignoring him.
xix.
there are no photographs from the years on the road.  they always have to be ready to peel out at any second, leave everything behind if necessary, and they can’t leave behind a camera full of photographs in a motel room too close to the scene of the crime.  so there’s no way to prove they were ever at a vets against vietnam protest or in a lab in nashua that’s a smoking hole in the ground these days or a roadside diner in montana where raven won a free meal by eating a steak the size of her head.  there’s no proof alex ever owned a mello yello shirt or any proof that raven burned that shirt, ostensibly because there was blood on it but really because it was fucking ugly.
“remember dc?” she asks.
“i still have the scars from dc,” he says.
“they didn’t beat you up that bad.”
xx.
“be more excited,” he imagines her saying.  he doesn’t look at her.  two sundays ago they woke up in a motel room in oklahoma with her drooling into his neck but today they have to pretend they haven’t seen each other since vietnam.  he doesn’t think he can keep a straight face if he looks at her.
they don’t say hello.  he keeps trying to look at other people.  hank.  charles.
when he finally catches her eye, she winks at him.

Car insurance question?
Im 16 and about to get my license. For a first car, I'm looking to get a used 04-06 Pontiac Grand Prix. Of course, I want to get the V8 GXP trim compared to the base V6 trim. But my parents say that the insurance on a V8 for a 16 year old male driver would be rediculous, which I know. But how much more would it be to insure a V8 Grand Prix compared to a V6? And would taking a defensive driving course or something make a considerable difference? Thanks for any advice.""
What do i need to know about individual health insurance?
I'll be transition from a perm position with benefits into one that is contract base (6 months) and no benefits so I want to get some health insurance through private insurance. What health insurance can I get as a low income american college student?
Hello, I am a nineteen community college student living in North San Diego, California and I live with my parents. I make less that $1,000 a month working part time and going to school full-time. I get financial aid from my school, but only for the classes, not the books. My father, the only other worker in my family, makes roughly around $32,000 a year. We barely make the rent each month and barely have enough for gas. About when I was sixteen, I was diagnosed with Gallstones and was urged to better my choice of eating. Of course as a Mexican-American, I wasnt about to give up my Carne Asada or burgers so I continued my vices which led to various, and very painful gallstones attacks over the past couple of years. Now I am no longer able to eat anything without feeling sick to my stomach. I was cut out on all junk food and have pinned myself to a grilled/boiled chicken only and greens diet. I don;t eat any red meat and make sure to have fresh made fruit/vegetables smoothies. Yet, for the past four days, Like i said i haven;t been able to pass anything. I am currenly runng every morning. My father thinks I have an ulcer. So, straight to the point, I am a low-income college student with no money left over at the end of each month and I need to go to the doctor's immediately. I am an american citizen but have no health insurance at the moment. I need surgery to remove the gallstones, but first have to go an have a checkup. I was wondering if there was anyway that i can get covered? My mother applied for medi-cal but we havent heard anything in over four months and its a LONG process. Can Anyone please help me!""

Will damages to my rental car go to my car insurance if I was not the one driving?
I have terrible luck lately. Two weeks ago I totaled my car (my fault) and I have a rental until tomorrow. Rental is from enterprise and paid for thru my car insurance. On my rental agreement I did not list any other drivers, and since it was paid for by my car insurance the guy crossed out the extra insurance and just asked me how much my car insurance deductible is and wrote that down($250). Today, I looked at the agreement and I actually hadn't signed it when I rented the car (even though there is a place for me to sign)...hmm...(?) SO, last night I was drinking and my boyfriend was not so he drove us home- in my rental. A car hit the rear driver side of us and it caused a dent and some paint damage. Called the cops, the other driver lied and nobody cited. I DO NOT want my insurance to know, since I just totaled my car. Boyfriend has full coverage, can it go on his? or will it go on mine? Can we just pay for it in cash & not use insurance? Its minor, fix before I turn it back in ?""

Fraudulent car insurance claim against me?
hi my problem in a nutshell is my vehicle was hit in the rear while it was parked, when i confronted the driver we had an argument and the police were called no offences were committed and the police left after me and the other driver exchanged names and addresses. A month or so later i received a claim for neck injuries to the driver and his 2 passengers for approximately 20,000 for an accident that he said i drove into the rear of him which was totally false, i have witnesses which include the police officer who attended to the fact that the other driver hit my parked unattended car, i have lost my no claims bonus and i applied for a job as a driver which i did not get because of this pending claim, my insurance company have tried to contact the other driver who has not answered for a number of months and when i spoke to my insurance company i was informed that the other parties insurance company does not have the full story i.e they have not been told that he hit my vehicle and i have witnesses to prove that i am at a loss because i have been told it can take 3 years for the claim to close if the other driver does not answer any of the correspondence he receives. any advice please""

Can I sue my Auto Insurance Company?
In 2005, as part of our divorce agreement, my ex and I decided to keep the same auto insurance but under separate policies. We had been with this company for years. My policy was on auto pay meaning that the payments were taken directly from my account. He walked in to pay his. About 6 months after the divorce, I was pulled over for a routine traffic stop and was told I was driving an uninsured vehicle. Without insurance, my registration was also invalid. Both tickets totaled 1K. My car was taken into impound. I checked and found the officer was correct. On good terms with my ex, I told him what happened. He said for the past 6 months, each time he went in to make a payment, the girl HIS was already paid. Realizing what had happened. They were applying my payments to his automobile. I was furious. I notified the agent who initially did not want to accept blame, but since the payments were automatic and my account number was on each payment they took, they were responsible. The error was compounded by the fact that the cancellation notice went to HIS address (how dumb was that!) So I had no way of knowing that I was cancelled. I was without a car for 2 weeks and lost my job. After much haggling and many sleepless nights of wondering what to do without a job or a car, the insurance company finally admitted blame, paid the impound fees of $1,250.00. The agent also said they would handle the 2 tickets totaling 1K. FAST FORWARD TO 2010 in my state, the county did a scofflaw sweep and I was summoned to court with over 5 thousand other delinquent drivers to address unpaid tickets. The order was come to court by April 30th or be arrested. Realizing this had to be a mistake, but fearful of the law, I stood in line for over 5 hours in blazing heat, then sat in court another 5 hours waiting for my day in court. I was immediately threatened with arrest because the 2 tickets were not paid. Up to that moment, I had no idea the insurance company had not paid the 2 tickets. This time, not only was my insurance and registration cancelled, my license was suspended due to the age of the infraction (5 years). In front of the judge, I called the agents' office only to be told by the secretary that they had no intention to pay the ticket. Paying to get the car out of impound was enough. When the judge heard this she was shocked and let me off with a promise to pay in 5 days. She made me promise not to drive. With no way to get home but drive, I took a chance, and was pulled over. The officer informed me that due to the vast number of outstanding cases, tags bearing our county name would be targeted for a while (talk about a police state!). I showed him my documents from the court and headed home. This is a nightmare. Would I have a case if I filed suit against my insurance company for failing in their fiduciary responsibility to a 16 year client in good standing? By the way this company is one of the largest in the country.""

Will it be cheaper to pay the $1000 fine for not having insurance then to purchase insurance?
There is no incentive to buy insurance...just a whip if you don't. Maybe a small example; Dude and his girlfriend, who voted for Obama, are a young couple living in an apartment. They own an old car that they are always trying to keep running and Dude has bounced off of a couple of jobs while his girlfriend is looking for a part-time that she can hold on to. They can't afford the payments on a new car or health insurance. Dude gets a new job but time is running out. It's coming up on tax return time and they NEED that f'n money! I am 26 years old, in California. I have had Allstate for almost 2 years now, and every 6 months my rate increases. It went up $200+, and I have not had any tickets/accidents/claims, and I have not moved. When I asked them about this, they just said they are adjusting their rates due to zip code. Seems like bologna to me. Has anyone else had this problem? Which insurer do you recommend?""
Question about getting your own insurance?
A friend of mine recently just got his license and he tried to go on his mother insurance who doesn't have any insurance. Well, she tried to go on her own and they said that she had to put every single person who has insurance on, which will cost like 500 dollars per person!! Anyways, will it be possible for him to get his own, and will it be cheaper? Also, his father has his license suspended but that was at least 2yrs ago or so. Do they have to know about this or is they way to keep it from them. And, Do you have to put money down when getting insurence?""

Why is there a huge difference in insurance quotes if all info is the same?
I'm shopping around for insurance quotes because I thought my car insurance was too high. Progressive gave me a very low quote, which I was happy about. It was what I thought I should be paying compared to friends I've talked with. All the other quotes from the other insurance companies were in the same price range and very high. I began to worry that Progressive had some incorrect info, so I called them back, we went over all the info again, and everything is right. They even emailed my quote to me and it's all correct. Should I be worried that the quote is so low or is Progressive just being competetive?""
""Why do all of my friends get cheap car insurance, but not me?""
ok so my problem is, I am currently on a provisional license (in the UK of course) and literally all of my friends that are driving currently are getting insurance for less than 2k a year. (male, 17 years old, living in west cumbria, same as me) and that is with the same cover I am looking at... comprehensive cover as a named driver on a parents car. I have tried everything, even looked at the same cars and the qoutes are still almost double. this does not make sense... why the bloody hell do i have to pay 3500 quid a year for a poxy 500 quid car when all my mates only pay 1500 a year on the same thing!!! my postcode is ca28 by the way, which is a grade c postcode area for insurance, same as my friends. they seem to use aviva, i got a qoute from them, 300 a month, they got 150 a month. even those that have passed their test get cheaper insurance than me. please help. ste""

Old bmws? Insurance? Cali driving age?
Hey, im 14 from California and will be 15 in september. I was wondering if anyone knew any nice older bmws, i like the e46 m3 and stuff but i was wondering if there were some other nice powerful ones i should know about. I dont want to spend more than 18k on the car itself. My next question is how much insurance usually is, i know its more expensive for a sports car but how much? The insurance doesnt factor into the 18k for the car, i was just wondering. And last, what is the absolute minimum age for driving in cali? My school is too far to walk or bike ( like 8 miles) and i cant really get a ride, i usually end up taking a city bus then walking 2 miles but the bus runs late a lot and im tardy for school. I say that because i heard there are special permits to just go and from school. Please reply of you know the answer to any all these question thanks!""

A question about car insurnace?
Hello, I just paid my car insurance......the lady said I should get my own insurance so I can start getting my own discounts , I am 30 years old and both my sisters (32 and 28) are on my mom and dad's insurance plan too, we get a multi line and multi car discount that adds up to about $40 dollars every 6 months for me.....I was in a hurry so I didn't really ask why but was wondering about it after I left.....I pay $112 every 6 months so $40 extra would be kind of crazy wouldn't it? Just wondering why......thank you.......""

What should I do about Car Insurance in New Jersey?
I live in NJ. I am 19 years old. I have had some problems in the past with my license. I have hit 2 Deer, had 2 2-Car Accidents, and have 3 Speeding Tickets. There was a period of 90 in which my license was suspended for these violations. I have been clean for a year now. Allstate has jacked my premium this year from $6K to $8K for 6 months. I wanted to change insurances. I tried to get Geico and Esurance but they won't insure me, even with my granddad on the policy as a primary. Esurance was going to cover me on Sunday along with my granddad, but today I called to give them my credit card # and someone different from the person I originally talked to on Sunday said that they cannot insure me. I have been without Insurance for a week now b/c I thought I was going to be with Esurance. What should I do now? How bad is it that I have been without insurance for 5 days? Should I go back to Allstate? Another thing I was thinking was dropping my insurance all together.""
