The ASL brothers actually have the perfect plot and dynamic for a Zombie AU. They meet when they're young. On their own. In the middle of an apocalypse. Sabo sacrifices himself for them while they're running away from some zombies and they assume he got bitten and died. Luffy and Ace spend years mourning the loss of their brother and meeting new people. They part ways because Ace wants to do his own thing and join the Whitebeard Pirates (or, y'know, that's still how they call themselves. Don't think too much about it) and try to find more survivors while Luffy starts meeting new people (the Strawhats, ofc). Each of them has their own missions and people they've lost to the virus, but the thing they have in common is that they want to find a cure. Yadda yadda yadda. And then Ace dies saving Luffy's life. And it's not even because he gets bitten, he just protected him from some bastards that were trying to kill him. Not long after, he finds Sabo again because they find survivors who have made a pretty solid civilization and stable place to live in. You know that scene from TLOU where they say "so, communism" / "Nah, it ain't like that" / "This is a commune. We're communists"? Well, that's the crew meeting Sabo.
