Wayhaught EarperCon Panel Transcript
So, some people asked if Saturday’s Wayhaught Panel at EarperCon could be transcribed. I went ahead and did it. It isn’t perfect. There were a few moments where even with high-quality headphones, I couldn’t make out what they were saying bc the sound was so horrible, and they tended to mumble. But this is what I got. Feel free to let me know about any corrections. I hope this is at least a little helpful to those who weren’t able to make out the audio on the video. I tried to get the minute marks as accurately as possible to make it easier to follow along with the video.
Host: And now, because she’s currently taking a victory lap backstage—
Dom: It’s just me guys, sorry.
Host: It’s actually, uh…Wayhaught is broken up, I’m sorry to say…
Dom: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! WHOA.
Host:–Just waiting for Kat to come out.
Dom: She’s just making a cup of tea, I think…there she is.
*applause*
Kat: Did you announce…was I not there?
Host: Well you were about to be, but you just like…
Kat: Sorry, guys
Host: But we still had fun with it.
*soft chatter*
Host: Alright, so flash photography only for the first five minutes, guys.
Dom: Sorry we’re a bit late guys—
Kat: Yeah, we’re gonna talk about that
Dom: –the photos took longer than we expected.
Kat: We’re working very hard to make sure everybody gets their photos and stuff. So, we’re gonna make that happen. We’re redoing a few things.
*applause*
–1:00—
Dom: Do I smell?
Host: Um, yeah, sorry girl, sorry. No, okay, so, I decided to make things a little bit more interesting. Instead of coming up with questions of my own to start off this panel, I would ask your castmates for a question.
Dom: Oh my gosh.
Host: So, first, from one Shamier, he’d like to know what is Wayhaught’s dream first date?
Audience member: EarperCon!
Kat: Um…I-I think that we would go to a, uh, like a carnival.
Dom: *laughs*
Kat: Well, I guess not.
Dom: (????) through Rio, like I don’t really know—
–2:00–
Kat: No no no, I’m sorry, I should clarify, this might be a language barrier. Um, no, what I mean by a carnival is like with rides and stuff.
Dom: Oh!
Kat: Like a fair.
Dom: Oh…
Kat: What do you call that?
Dom: We don’t call it carnival. *to audience* Do we call it a carnival?
Audience: No. A fair.
Kat: So you’re thinking of like *dancing* Carnival
Both: *mumbling through laughter*
Dom: Okay, cool, I really like the fair. Yeah.
Kat: Wouldn’t that be fun? Come on…
Audience: Funfair.
Dom: Funfair. Yeah, I think that’d be really cute.
Kat: With like a ferris wheel, and they could have their first kiss on top of the—
Dom: Aw
Audience: Aww
Dom: So cute. Yeah, that would be really cool. You could take me to the fair anytime, babe.
Kat: What do you think?
Dom: Yeah, that’s great. I’d love to come. When are we going?
Host: All right, and then this one is from Michael. He wants to stir the pot a little. Yeah, if our ladies weren’t together, and they had to pick a guy from the cast.
Audience: Ooo
–3:00–
Dom: Classic. Classic from Michael. *pause* A guy from the cast?
Host: A guy from the cast.
Dom: *huffs*
Kat: I don’t know, like my first instinct is, is the person most like Waverly. V-V-Jeremy?
Audience: *applauds*
Dom: As in, we’re talking about our character?
Host: Yes.
Dom: Obviously.
Host: I mean, you can answer both.
Dom: No, no, no. Hm. I don’t…I don’t think Waverly would be into any of them. No offense.
Audience: *cheers*
Dom: Not at all, really. I mean, no…no
Audience: Good answer! Best answer.
Host: Alright, so. If now you finish your flashes, and let’s ask some questions. Get our hands up.
Dom: *humming*
–4:00–
Kat: Somebody yell out the first one. Oh, here’s a mic, here we go.
Questioner 1: So, this is not actually my question. This is Joe’s, but he’s not so confident in speaking anything else but sign language. So, I’m just asking for him. Um, he wants to know what’s the easiest and the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do in preparation for the show.
Dom: Oo
Kat: That’s a good question.
Dom: In preparation.
Kat: I feel like you would have a lot. Not in that way, just, you have done so many challenging things.
Dom: Yeah, but I wouldn’t say any of those. Like the ones that you’re thinking of.
Kat: Oh
Dom: Like singing and all of that stuff. That’s not where, where I would go at all with that.
Kat: The easiest and the…sorry, one more time. The easiest and the—
Dom: Most challenging.
Kat: The easiest to prepare for, and the hardest thing to prepare for?
Questioner 1: Yeah.
Kat: Okay.
*silence*
Dom: Um…
Kat: Um…
*Silence* Kat: You know what—
Dom: This is a really interesting panel you guys.
–5:00–
Kat: You know what I think? I think that at first our intimate scenes would be, were the most challenging—
Dom: Not that challenging for me…
Kat: No, but because I was so concerned with getting it all right and making it really great. But now I’m, I feel relieved when I see them on the call sheet because I feel so…I’m comfortable now, and it’s like, we just…we have our groove and…
Dom: *giggles*
Audience: *cheers*
Kat: But yeah, that’s one that switched.
Dom: Yeah, I’d completely agree with that.
Kat: Yeah?
Dom: Yeah…very good.
Kat: I guess you can go.
Dom: Um…
Kat: Did I take your own answer?
Dom: Sorry, no, I’m just…um…yeah…It’s a really good question, but really tricky! I don’t know…
Kat: What about, like, some of the emotional stuff?
Dom: Yeah.
Kat: Like with Mel and the—
Dom: Yeah, I think that’s, that’s the hardest for me. It’s always like—
Kat: *notices the screen behind them*
–6:00—
Kat: I didn’t realize that was up there. Was that up there this morning too?
Audience: Yep.
Dom: Um, I think for me, it’s always the stuff that I know is gonna mean a—mean a lot to people. So, like, all of the emotional stuff I get really nervous about before, like ‘What if it doesn’t happen? What if—’ you know, we shoot so quickly, so sometimes you just don’t have the time to get it where to where you want it to be. So you just have to really be in the right place, like, emotionally going into is. So I always get a little bit nervous with that stuff to be honest. Especially when it means so much. Like the baby stuff and the importance of that, of giving away the baby, and ugh, you know?
Kat: Yeah. You know what scene I had a really hard time with because of timing? We, the end scene where Waverly walks across the Purgatory boundary…
Dom: Oh, yeah. The wind…
Kat: We were shooting that in like a tornado. It was SO windy. And that was really, it was such an emotional scene that I remember feeling very frustrated that day–
Dom: Yeah
Kat: –because I felt like we didn’t have time, and that was really tough ‘cause like, my expectation for the scene—
–7:00–
Dom: Yes
Kat: I think it still turned out really beautifully, but I remember just being like, ‘Ugh! The wind!’
Dom: It’d be like…wooshhh
Kat: Yeah, yes, just a nightmare.
Dom: It was like, find your lips…
Kat: And we’re trying to be like really sincere about, but we couldn’t hear each other, we were like this close to each other.
*pause*
Kat: Um, that is fun.
Questioner 2: Um, hi
Kat: Hey!
Questioner 2: Um, thank you for coming here, first of all. It means a lot to all of the fandom. Um, my question is a two-parter. Um, so last night when we were talking about which guest stars we’d love to have in, and I said Ray because I would love to see him in it. Um, so part one is who would you like to see guest star, and number two, if you could guest star on any other t.v. show, what would it be?
Kat: Oh…
–8:00—
Kat: I wanna be on The Handmaid’s Tale so much. I haven’t even gotten an audition for it. So, if any of you—
Dom: You haven’t?!
Kat: I have not. They won’t see me. The casting director doesn’t really like me, I don’t think, but I want–and it shoots in Toronto, like that’s a really realistic, I really, and it starts now. *lowers voice* So if anyone wants to get on Twitter and, like, talk to the showrunners…um…That would be a dream.
Dom: I don’t know about me. What would be my dream…I just feel so content with what I’m doing at the moment. I know that sounds really ridiculous, but I’m just like bring me back to Calgary now so we can film. Um…what would I like…sorry, sorry, um, I’ll keep thinking while you can talk about the other…
Kat: Um…guest stars…Well we—
Dom: I think—
Kat: Nope.
Dom: Nope.
*laughter*
Kat: No, no, go, go.
Dom: I’d kinda like to be in American Gods. I thought that was really interesting. Yeah. Really good actors.
Kat: Yeah, that’s a great show. Um…we keep on talking about Amy Acker on the show, that would be amazing.
–9:00—
Audience: *cheers*
Kat: That would be fun. Um…
Dom: Hm…any of you guys wanna come on? Join?
Kat: I think…I don’t know…yeah, I, it…*huffs*
Dom: *laughs*
Kat: You know what I’m doing, I’m trying to think and my realistic brain lights up,
Dom: Exactly.
Kat: But then my fantasy brain also like…
Dom: Yeah, but I think, like ma—like, overall it’s just like…Emily did just does such a good job with the casting that I don’t like wanna push anybody because I think that some of the best characters, like, I read them, and I don’t necessarily expect it to be who it is, and then it comes, and you’re like ‘Oh that’s a surprising casting for that role’ because of what you already like pre-empted in your head. It’s always back on. Do you know what I mean? And I think that’s what makes the show so special, like the inclu–inclusivity of all different kinds of people. So, yeah…leave it up to her.
Kat: Yeah, she’s, yeah…
*silence*
Dom: Next question…
–10:00—
Questioner 3: Hi guys
Both: Hey
Questioner 3: This is for Dominique, em…my, the most powerful scenes for me are always the ones with Wynonna, and because Wynonna and Waverly are just amazing, and what have you learned from Melanie for acting or just for anything like in general?
Dom: My god, what haven’t I learned from Melanie? I feel like that’s more of a question. Um…we…yeah, we talk about it all the time. That woman is, um…a true rare talent, like I know you guys can see it, but working with her is even more of an amazing experience because…it’s really hard to describe. I don’t know if there are any actors in here, but, um, when she looks at you, she really looks at you. And I think sometimes, it’s quite hard to describe, but when you’re playing a character, there’s often like a film in between you because you’ve got your character, so you’re not actually that person, and sometimes it feels…*to Kat* you know when you’re working with someone and–
–11:00—
Dom: –it just feels like they’re not quite looking at you?
Kat: *softly* Do I ever look at you?
Dom: No, you always look at me!
Kat: Okay, I was like, oh my god…
Dom: No, as if…but that’s different. No. But, um, sometimes it’s like, you know, you pre-empt what you’re gonna   *makes a ‘p’ sound*   I feel like I’m beatboxing.   *Adjusts microphone while mumbling*   like a pro, you guys.
Kat: *mumbles away from mic*
Dom: Because I’m really articulate. Um…no, but when *winces and adjusts mic again* No, but when she—here you go, I just gonna stand back a bit.
Kat: Yeah.
Dom: Can you hear me? Yeah, um, but when she looks at you, she really looks at you, and she always, uh…throws things at you that, when you’re not expecting it, so it, you have to be present in the moment, like you have to be…open to be affected, and…she just works in a really raw and organic way and isn’t scared. And I think that the main thing for me when I first came to Calgary was like, I think you made a big ole mistake for bringing this little British girl from England—
–12:00—
Dom: –like, do they even know that I’m English? Um…so nervous that, you know, it just seemed like such a big leap for me. Um, and…as well, just, look I was in just a very different place than I am now just confidence wise and whatever, and she really promotes what, like, when on set, just like have no fear. And that is something that like also correlates into my own life, just in general. It’s so important, and I try so hard to just get rid of fear because it’s like, always the thing that holds us back, right? Every single person probably can relate to just being, like, scared, and theref–therefore you don’t do thing that you probably should do because you’re scared. And I think that that was the perfect thing she does in her acting when she just goes in and she just goes, ‘fuck it’. Oops!
Audience: *Applauds*
Dom: Sorry…
–13:00—
Dom: Yeah, but um, and I think that if we can all just adopt a little bit of that in real life as well, it just gets you a long way, right? So I think that that’s the main thing I’ve learned from her.
Kat: Well said.
Dom: Oh, thank you. Especially the part where I was going, ‘fu—’
*audience chatter*
Dom: Hello
Questioner 4: This is going to be the quickest and the silliest question of the entire thing.
Dom: Great
Questioner 4: Pickles…you love them or you hate them?
Dom: Can I just quickly say that did anyone know—okay this is gonna, right, probably a lot—
Kat: The quickest and the…
*Laughter*
Dom: Did anyone know, you know gherkins?
Audience: Yeah
Kat: No.
Dom: Did you know that they’re cucumbers? I only found that out like two days ago.
Kat: What?
Dom: A gherkin, you know, uh, what do you call it?
Audience: Pickles.
Kat: Oh, that’s a pickle? *to Dom* You call it a gherkin?
*Audience chatter*
Kat: Baby pickle? Yeah.
–14:00–
Dom: They’re cucumbers
Kat: Yeah, all pickles are cucumbers.
Dom: Baffling, you guys. I had no idea. Don’t know how long.
Kat: The big ones, the little ones, all of them. All cucumbers.
Dom: Cucumbers…Anyways, so that was not answering your question, but I was, I’m sorry, I thought everyone would be like, ‘What???’, and I was gonna be like, ‘Yeah!’, but no. Um…I…I’m gonna be in the middle. I sometimes like them, and I sometimes don’t.
Kat: Me too!
Dom: Oh really?
Kat: Mostly, I’m like…sometimes I’m really craving a pickle.
Dom: Oh yeah–*laughs*
Kat: But sometimes, I–*laughs*
Audience: *laughs*
Kat: Why you call it a pickle?
Dom: Yeah, like, in the mix, you know what I mean? Like only certain things, like back in the day we did cheese, not a cheese (??)
Kat: Oh, I was thinking the cheez-wiz, and my whole…
Dom: Ugh, no, you need (???) it. Cheddar, where granny’s from, get one little slab of cheddar.
Kat: Cracker?
*both laugh*
Kat: Sounds good.
Dom: *to questioner* What about you? Do you like pickles? Yeah? That’s good.
–15:00—
Questioner 5: Hi.
Kat: Hi.
Dom: Hello.
Questioner 5: Um, I think we all loved the story of Melanie’s improvisation with the rat smoothie. Um, do you have, do you remember any line, improvised line of yours, even if it didn’t make it to the final cut?
Dom: Oo, I don’t have a memory of any of that stuff. *to Kat* Do you?
Kat: Oh…I don’t…no, I don’t…It’s really hard to remember because often times it’s so off the cuff, and sometimes I’ve h–I don’t remember if it was written or not…But like, no, you know what I mean? Sometimes I can’t remember if that was something we adlibbed, or…
Dom: Mhm.
Kat: But Melanie does it quite a bit.
Dom: All the time.
Kat: Yeah.
Dom: It’s, like, constant. I don’t know how she does it, every time different.
Kat: Yeah
Dom: She just has like that brain that you know can think very quick. I’m not so quick.
Kat: Not as quick as you thought
Dom: As you can see.
–16:00–
Kat: Yeah.
Dom: Uh……..Um…
Host: Well just to expand on that, then, how about is there any scenes you shot that didn’t make it into the final cut that you wish did?
Dom: There…There was, oh, didn’t get shot, but there was a scene between, so you know, uh, in the alternate universe
*small child in audience makes a noise*
Dom: *mimics the noise* She’s like, um, at the end of the episode, ‘We’ve got a wedding to plan,’ to, to Jeremy. And there was a whole scene the next episode where they were like chatting over coffee–
Kat: Where they had the wedding?
Dom: No, no, no, chatting over coffee and discussing like wedding plans and stuff which was so cute.
Kat: With Jeremy?
Dom: Yeah, and Varun and I were so excited like, ‘Yes! This is going to be so much fun!’ And then it was like, and…cut. So, it was like, oh, so close.
Kat: There were scenes with—then again, I, I forget them because we don’t address them.
Dom: I also find that because, when, when I first started up last year, um…
–17:00—
Dom: I always thought it was amazing, how you just keep everything in, you really do it. And Emily was like are you mad? We cut stuff all the time. And I had, I could absolutely never tell.
Kat: Yeah.
Dom: Like, just cause it looks so good–
Kat: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dom: –that you just expect it to be, like, just how it was prepared. Hm…don’t know.
*Giggles*
Questioner 6: Hi, sorry, just bear with me for a minute. I…It’s a two-parter, okay? So like this year, I don’t know, but a lot of people kind of noticed that Waverly and Nicole shared like jewelry. Like, there was a necklace, a deer necklace that she had, that Waverly had in 1x12 that Nicole wore in 2x07. And then there was another one that Nicole wore in 2x08 that Waverly…
*Laughter*
Questioner 6: That um…
Nicole: Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Questioner 6: That Nicole wore, that, sorry, that Waverly wore in 1x02 and then 1x06.
–18:00—
Questioner 6: So, I was wondering if that was like in—you guys? Or was it just like the costume department just sort of—
Kat: Dropping the ball?
Questioner 6: Yeah
*Laughter*
Dom: You are very observant.
Kat: Did you notice…did you notice the rings, too?
Questioner 6: Yeah, I did.
Audience member: And the necklace.
Kat: And the necklace. It was another one. What did it look like again?
Questioner 6: It was the two, it was two.
Dom: The what?
Questioner 6: It had like this gold thing, a gold one.
Dom: Gold one.
Questioner 6: It was the one she wore at the baby shower. The pink–
Dom: Hm?
Questioner 6: It was the one she wore for the baby shower in the pink jacket.
*silence*
*laughter*
Kat: Well, my first thought was, ‘I was wearing a necklace?’
Questioner 6: Yeah, you were wearing it.
Kat: I’m gonna go look for that.
Questioner 6: Okay
Kat: No, but I think…I, I, I think they’re so on the ball that they—
Dom: *Scratches nose*
Kat: Do I have something on my nose?
Dom: Oh, no, no, I was…
Kat: Um, that they, I don’t think it’s a mistake.
Dom: Yeah.
Kat: I think one time with the rings…
Dom: I…yeah…
Kat: There might have–
Dom: Can we tell a story?
Kat: –been a mix up.
Dom: Yeah, there was (??)
Kat: Oh? Seriously? I genuinely…
–19:00–
Dom: So, one day, so at the beginning, they put out, um, *to Kat* was I not–
Kat: Well…
Dom: Now I’m nervous.
Kat: I might not know. Do tell…
Dom: The way it works, when you go to work is that when you wear a new outfit, so you’ve done the costume fittings already, so like we’ve picked out the things that we think we like, and we got like, some options that don’t get used, and like, you know, depending on the day and what the scene is and all that stuff. So it’s set in your room when you get in. So you go in, blah blah blah, you don’t *turns to Kat* I tell long stories.
Kat: It’s good. You’re very (???)
Dom: But then, there’s like a…kind of a jewelry box that opens up, and it’s got lots of different options that are in it. And you kind of, well, she lets me choose to match up my jewelry to see what I like. It is fun. And, uh…and one day, they had accidently put one of…
Kat: I didn’t know this.
–20:00–
Dom: Yeah, one, a ring that Nicole had worn. I said, ‘Oh, I love that. Lovely.’ And so I put it on, and she said, ‘Oh, shit, no, that’s not your ring.’ And I was like, ‘I think…I think…’ I just thought that it was a really cute idea that they had like matching, like kinda friendship rings, like you know what I mean? And it would be a thing. So I thought, and I, I was gonna take it off, but I actually thought, have we got a spare one? So that we could both have it in our wardrobes because I actually thought that would be a nice idea.
Kat: Yep.
Dom: That’s the story.
Audience: Aww
Questioner 7: Okay, so at DragonCon this year, you met a girl called Amy. And she gave you, she got you to give a groupchat called “Sudbury Itchies” a shoutout
Dom: Oh yeah!
Questioner 7: And I'm actually in that group chat along with--
Dom: Hello.
Questioner 7: Along with Libby, wherever—there she is, there. So I just wanted to let you know that we are actually, like, real people, so I like I’m gonna give you the names of everyone in the groupchat.
Dom: Whoa.
Questioner 7: Is that okay?
Dom: Yeah, do it.
–21:00–
Questioner 7: Okay, so there’s…there is Lief, there’s Amy, there’s Lily, there’s Molly, there’s Dakota, there’s Lindsey, there's Tatia, there’s Nora, there’s Chris, there’s Sage, there’s Pie (?), there’s (??), and there’s our newest member which is Anika, and there’s Julianna which actually owns the Screaming Goose. That’s—
*Both tilt their heads*
Audience: Laughs
Questioner 7: Amy told you about it? The Screaming Goose that Amy told you about? Yeah?
Dom: Yeah.
Questioner 7: I just wanted to let you guys know that we are--
Kat: *whispering to Dom*
Questioner 7: You know the Goose? Amy told you about the Goose? No? Okay, well, I just wanted to tell you guys that we are really, really grateful—
Both: Aww
Questioner 7: –for you guys. All these people are literally like my best friends and like my family, so it’s all down to you guys, that you brought all these 16 people together. So, I just really wanted to thank you.
Kat: That’s awesome.
Dom: Thank you so much. It’s not all down to you guys. It’s because you guys go out of your way and decide to—
Questioner 7: Oh, and there’s Tai. I forgot my friend, Tai.
–22:00–
Dom: It’s just…I’m always so happy to hear when people get together and stuff because like just so you have that fit in, you know what I mean? Like you’re going to meet amazing people, and I’m so glad to hear that…so good for you guys.
Kat: Awesome.
*Applause*
Questioner 8: Um, I was just wondering, your characters have inspired so many people here, I was just wondering how your characters have inspired you in your everyday life?
Dom: Be braver…be braver. Go with your heart. Always…I know it’s so silly, but…
Kat: I think, um, like just to care less of what people think. Stay, and stay true to who I am, and, and to not…not wo—I think as I get older, too, every year, I just care less in a good way. You know, I just, priorities, and what’s important. I think Nicole has a really good sense of what’s important, and really what’s not. Yeah.
–23:00–
*Applause*
Dom: *Whispers*
*Laughter*
Dom: You made it. I’m proud of you.
Kat: You regret taking that job, don’t you?
Mic Guy: I ain’t paid enough for this.
*Laughter*
Questioner 9: So my question’s for Dom. You have kissed the three girls on the show.
Audience: Woo!
Kat: True.
Questioner 9: Which I’m sure the majority of people in here also want to do. But the real question is, who was the best?
Kat: Nice.
Dom: Who do you think? Come on. That’s not even a shadow of a question for that *points to Kat*
Audience: *Cheers*
Dom: Of course…also, imagine if I was like, ‘Mel.’ That would’ve been (??).
Kat: Well, to be fair, those girls didn’t really get a chance. They were—
Dom: Yeah, to be fair, and like, we discussed this the other day, and it’s like, it…
*giggles*
Dom:…it’s very different when we kiss because we really got like—
–24:00—
Dom: –a knack for it now, you know what I mean? We’ve been practicing it. *mumbles* It’s easy. And the other two were like more of a peck, you know what I mean? They weren’t really like a…*pause*…a snog.
Questioner 10: Hi
Dom: Hello.
Questioner 10: First of all, I just want to say thank you for being so supportive of the lgbt community. It means a lot.
Audience: *Applause*
Questioner 10: My question is for both of you. How do you feel about having a fanbase that is like 99% female.
Kat: It is so great.
Dom: It’s like the best thing in the whole wide world.
Kat: Yeah.
Questioner 10: Do you find it strange?
Dom: Strange?
Questioner 10: Or did you expect it?
Dom: Um, I….had no idea—
–25:00—
Dom: –like hadn’t predicted who would watch our show to be completely honest with you. I thought it would be a really, really mixed bag. I’m extremely happy there are lots of women in here, and I think it just shows that we need more shows with strong female representation because everybody in this room is like, has the same view on it. It’s just like, thank god, finally, they’re writing these amazing, strong female characters. Um….it’s just great. *mumbles*…you know what I mean? It’s just always positive. Um…
Kat: Yeah–
Dom: Girl power.
Kat: –overwhelmingly positive.
Dom: Peace.
Kat: Yeah. It’s, and it’s a nice, it just feels safer in a way. Um…I have a lot of actresses who are very jealous.
Dom: Yes.
Kat: They’re like, ‘it’s not fair!’ I just think, um…I, I-I also want to say on this, um, kind of note, I think it’s so important as—
–26:00—
Kat: –we’ve seen this huge turn in media towards female dominated, this huge push in Canada, especially, to get female writing, females directing, and I think, I think too it’s really important that we never…alienate men in that way. Because I think, it’s just this side note that I just decided I wanted to bring in the world, but I feel like if we’re gonna move forward with our, um, progressing more women on screen, more diversity on screen, we have to include everyone in the conversation, because I think it’s about, it’s about creating a dialogue and understanding of, you know, my life experience may be different than yours, but let me share it so that you understand and I understand where you’re coming from, and I think, I think that we can’t risk, I think it’s important for us all to remember that making female dominated stuff does not mean excluding half of our population either. I think if we’re going to make progress, we need to keep the discussion open.
Dom: Yeah.
Kat: Does that make sense?
Audience: Yes
–27:00–
Dom: And I always love it when you got guys that come to the shows because like, you’re the real heroes because you’re the ones supporting these wonderful women. They really are the ones that make…
Kat: Yes. They’re awesome feminists, and I love that.
Dom: Recruit more guys.
Kat: Yeah.
Host: Alright, so we have to get wrapped up, guys. I’ve got one more question for you.
Kat: *mumbles*
Host: I know, but especially with the (??)
Kat: I know, I’m sorry—
Host: But um, just about the, as we all know, during The 100, there was a recent quite controversial death. Um, and then you guys came out and basically said, ‘we will not be another lesbian killed by a bullet.’ Did you guys sit down, did you have a writers room kind of conversation about how important it was for you to kinda step into that role, and be the focus of that kind of attention?
Both: Nope.
Host: Or was it just really, like blindsided.
Kat: No, what happened, *to Dom* sorry, did you–
Dom: No, you go.
Kat: What happened was we shot that scene with Willa at the end of ep, uh, season one, and…I had no idea that that was going to be a thing—
–28:00—
Kat: –Um, I think we shot that scene before, no…the Lexa thing happened, but um…um…we shot that scene bef—*to Dom* it was before something big happened. It was written before–*to audience* Was there something else?
Audience: It was written before Lexa.
Dom: It was…
Kat: It was, it was before.
Dom: It was.
Kat: Okay, so it was written before Lexa.
Dom: But…obviously, I mean Emily was aware of the trope.
Kat: Emily, yeah, Emily was super aware.
Dom: But we, we put our hands up to say that this has taught us so much. Like we genuinely at the beginning, didn’t really understand the true importance of this relationship for so many people. And we just, we just cared outside of that, do you know what I mean? Just like as people, you know? So we wanted to do it with respect always, to make sure it was a beautiful relationship, and all of those things, and then, yeah, like you said, that came out afterwards—
–29:00—
Dom: –And Emily was like, oh god…because, well, I mean, yeah, it was just a part of her wonderful story telling. It wasn’t anything that was meant for that.
Host: Fantastic. Thanks for that, guys. Thanks everyone for coming out. We’re now moving on to the meet and greet with you guys.
Kat: Great.
Host: Yeah, and then after that, lunch, so…thanks for coming, everyone.
*applause*
