terra merely shrugged at the older woman before staring at the other crews, her eyes caught the eye of the youngest from prowdmon.

dayoung grinned a few seconds later, "unnie i'm sorry, hi unnie!'' she retained her grin even after the older gave a slight pout.

last, but certainly not least, was the leader herself. clad in a monochromatic black muscle tee and pants ensemble with a pair of boots that made her taller than anyone else on the platform, to say that she looked regal was an understatement even with jungwoo just behind her.

she greeted each crew with a smile of her own, a classic cheshire-like yet motherly smile as a few familiar faces came into her sight. “hi everyone! i trust you guys have been taking care of yourselves, yes?” choruses of “yes” and other answers in similar fashion crowded the room.

“yes, professor!” a voice from want suddenly voiced out, hana grinned at the sight of chaeyeon from the roster. “-ah, good to see you!”

hana, bewildered by the set as her eyes stared up at every detail, missed the look on the oldest contestant’s face. jungwoo sat there staring at nothing but her face, waiting for the moment their eyes would lock so that she can see that smile again.

next to comment was YGX, “very strong competitors,” leejung pouted. “i heard one of their members really likes to battle as a hobby? if that’s so, then we’re screwed.”

“oh, you’re screwed alright.” korinne said with a smug smirk, leejung stole a glance towards the member with furrowed brows. “they really like to reply to the commentaries huh?”

hana, distracted by her members and the other crews’ chatting voices, decided to make a shushing sound and place a finger on her lips to signal silence. and like clockwork, all crews, with emphasis on her own members, stopped their chatting.

that caused PROWDMON’s attention to move to their group once again, “did they have a bet?” dahee giggled.

hana, although reluctant, sighed and nodded. “i’ll give your ten dollars later, you brat.” the sub-leader grinned and almost cheered in joy, doing a small dance in her place as she sang, “i got 10 dollars, i got 10 dollars.”

“wow, jackie is still weird as ever.” hyowon remarked, her eyes never leaving the girl’s figure.

과수원(Kajuen) 한일 듀오가 풍성하게 수놓는 사운드 속으로 | #21 INTERVIEW

최근 온라인을 통해서 국가를 초월한 아티스트의 콜라보레이션이 활발해지고 있다. 일본과 한국의 아티스트들도 메이저와 인디를 불문하고 교류기회가 늘어나면서, 작년 봄, 서울 출신의 안쏘(Ansso)의 음악 프로젝트인 멜로우 블러쉬와 도쿄에 거주하는 미야오우가 "온라인 뮤직 듀오", 과수원(Kajuen)을 결성했다. 음악뿐만 아니라 애니메이션과 아트워크를 만드는 다재다능한 두 사람이 음악& 비주얼을 제작한 첫 EP, <상념채색> 한국어, 일어, 영어 가사와 어쿠스틱한 사운드를 축으로 다양한 음악 장르가 어우러진 음악세계, 그리고 생생한 아트웍까지 독특한 세계관에 빠져든다. 올해 3월의 디지털 릴리스 직후부터 한일에서 반향을 얻어, 6월에는 LP판, 그리고 9월에는 카세트 테이프가 발매되었다. 놀랍게도 이들은 SNS를 통해 알게 된 이후 현재까지 한 번도 직접 만난 적이 없다고 한다. 또 개인의 일과의 양립도 있던 가운데, 리모트라고 하는 환경에서 어떻게 2명의 개성이나 센스를 융화시켜 간 것일까. 이번에는, 그런 그들에게 이메일 인터뷰를 감행. 결성부터 EP <상념채색>의 제작 에피소드와 피지컬 릴리즈에 대한 생각, 그리고 마지막으로 앞으로의 행보에 대해서 물었다.

과수원의 시작 - 개인의 활동과 만남에 대해 ★우선은 독자분들께 각각 인사 부탁드립니다. 미야오우 : 안녕하세요! 과수원의 미야오우입니다.🍏 Mellow Blush: 안녕하세요! 과수원의 멜로우 블러쉬입니다🍎

과수원 이야기를 하러 가기 전에, 개개의 음악 활동에 대해 묻고 싶습니다. 어떤 백그라운드부터 시작했을까요? 각자 들려주세요 미야오우 : 중학교 때 아버지 집 창고 깊숙이 잠들어 있던 베이스를 가지고 돌아온 것이 음악을 시작한 계기입니다. 고등학교 때에는 밴드에서 곡을 만들거나 라이브를 하거나 했었습니다. 대학에서는 건축을 공부했었습니다. 현재는 음악이나 드로잉, MV등의 작품의 제작을 하고 있습니다. 공간과 음악의 관계에 관심이 있기 때문에 그것을 다양한 형태로 표현하고 싶습니다. Mellow blush : 원래 그림과 애니메이션 일을 하고 있었는데 2016년경 대학시절, 제 애니메이션에 사용할 사운드를 제가 직접 만들려고 하던 중, DAW를 독학하고 작곡을 시작했습니다. 2018년 봄에 일본 넷 레이블(Local Visions)의 오너인 sute aca씨가 "앨범을 낼래요?"라고 제안해 같은 해에 앨범을 발매했습니다. 개인이 아닌 레이블로 음원을 발표한 건 처음이어서 기쁘면서도 신기했던 기억이 납니다. 그 후로는 솔로 앨범을 계속 내고 단편 영화 음악 작곡에 참여하는 등 다양한 시도를 하면서 개인적으로 엔지니어링이나 사운드에 대해 부족하다고 생각한 부분에 대해 공부해 왔습니다. 솔직히 아직도 제 음악에 대해 잘 모르는 부분이 있어서 프로듀서로서의 음악 정체성을 형성하고 있는 중입니다.

두 분은 어떻게 만나 과수원을 결성하셨나요? 처음에는 SNS를 통해 알게 되어 서로에게 조금 흥미를 가지고 팔로우하는 정도로 지내고 있었습니다만, 2020년 초 Mellow Blush가 <seasonal signals>라는 사계절 컴필레이션 프로젝트를 기획했을 때 미야오를 초대하여, 거기에서 개인적으로 연락을 하기 시작해서 아트와 음악 이야기, 일본과 한국의 문화 등에 대해 다양한 이야기를 나누며 교류해나갔습니다. 바로 그 때 코로나가 시작되어 사회적으로도 온라인으로 이행해 가는 시기에 과수원은 활성화되었다고 생각합니다. 그 후 미야오우의 'Yuragi'라는 곡으로 콜라보레이션을 하면서 서로 음악취향이나 보컬의 합이 잘 맞는다고 느꼈습니다. 그리고, 함께 음악 듀오를 하게 되어 2020년 4월 12일에 과수원을 결성했습니다.

결성 후, wai wai music resort의 「빛의 다발」 리믹스를 다루었는데요 그 경위도 궁금합니다. wai wai music resort의 에브리데 씨로부터 리믹스의 의뢰가 와서 원래 팬이었던 저희는 기쁜 마음으로 받았습니다. 어떤 곡으로 할지는 자유로웠기 때문에, 가사도 아름답고 멜로디도 우아한 「빛의 다발」을 선택했습니다. 과수원을 결성하고 받은 첫 의뢰였기 때문에 기억에 남을 거라고 생각하고 열심히 했습니다. 원곡의 코드 진행이 복잡해서 좀 힘들었지만...(웃음)

'핑퐁처럼 왔다갔다'

EP '상념채색' 제작 에피소드 『상념 채색』의 제작구상은 언제부터였습니까? 2020년 4월 과수원을 결성할 때 2020년 안에 EP를 만들자는 목표가 있었습니다. 당시 타이틀은 없었지만 둘 다 막연하게 이런 이미지의 앨범을 만들고 싶다는 생각은 하고 있었어요.서로 가지고 있던 데모곡을 교환하기도 하고, 잼 세션을 통해 새로운 곡을 만들기도 하면서, 점점 상념 채색의 이미지가 구체화되어 갔습니다.

어느 쪽이든 간단한 멜로디를 만들어 보내고, 다른 한 사람이 거기에 사운드나 어레인지를 거듭해 반복해 가는 「온라인 잼 세션」이라고 하는 방법을 취하면서 제작되었다고 하셨는데요, 제작 기간은 어느 정도였습니까? 곡마다 다르지만 상념채색 제작에는 6~7개월 정도 걸렸어요. 서로 본업이 있기 때문에 그 이외의 자유시간에 과수원 곡을 만드는 형태였습니다. '하루카' 빼고 거의 1곡당 1개월 정도로 해나갔던 것 같아요. 처음에는 잼 세션답게 단기간에 집중해서 완성시키는 스타일이었고 제일 먼저 만든 곡 '19시 어느 여름날'은 거의 하루만에 완성됐죠. 요즘에는 녹음에 대해서 좀 더 신중해지는 것 같아요. 역시 홈 레코딩이기 때문에 그 단점을 커버하고 장점을 최대한 보완하기 위해서 에디팅과 믹싱에 시간이 걸립니다.

음반에서는 전체적으로 어쿠스틱한 사운드가 중심이 되는데 이 아이디어에 대해서 들려주세요. 어쿠스틱함은 처음부터 의도했다기보다는 자연스럽게 그렇게 되어갔습니다. 잼 세션 때 미야오우가 기타나 일렉트릭 베이스를 그리고 멜로우 블러쉬가 피아노를 치면서 점차 듀엣 보컬인 퓨전 포크라고 하는 방향을 가지기 시작했습니다. 그것을 기초로 편곡작업 때 신디사이저나 필드레코딩을 더하고, 약간 하이브리드의 색채를 띠는 곡이 만들어졌습니다. 청취자들로부터 스타일이 신선하다고 느껴졌다는 피드백을 몇 번 받아서 기쁘네요.

가사는 어떻게 제작해 나갔습니까? 주로 이미지 위주로 가사를 만들어 나갔어요. 예를 들어 어느 쪽에서 작사를 시작해 벌스 1을 만들면 다른 한 사람이 바통을 이어받아 벌스 2를 자유롭게 만드는 방법으로 진행했습니다. 가사 제작에 있어서는 특히 통화를 많이 하고, 조밀한 커뮤니케이션을 취해서 만들어 갔습니다. 서로 모국어가 아닌 언어로 노래했는데 어떠셨나요? 각각 들려주세요. 미야오우: 한국어나 영어로 노래하는 것은 정말 즐거워요. 일본어와는 다른 발음과 뜻을 알아가면서 동시에 노래한다는 것이 제겐 자극적인 일입니다. 한국어나 영어이기 때문에 가능한 리듬이나 뉘앙스를 의식하고 했습니다. 예를 들어 한국어와 일본어에서는 발음과 비슷한 단어가 많이 있는데 '상념채색'에서 나오는 일본어 '감정'은 그 직전에는 Mellow Blush가 부르는 '감정'과 의미도 같고 사운드적으로도 연결돼 있어요. 하지만 일본어에 없는 어감에 굉장히 고전했습니다. 발음이 잘 안 될 때는 Mellow Blush씨가 직접 발음 훈련을 시켜주었어요. 덕분에 조금은 한국어 발음이 늘었을지도 모릅니다. (웃음) Mellow Blush: 사실 전 모국어로 노래하는 것보다 일본어로 노래하는 게 더 좋아요. 한국어와 비교해서 일본어는 한음절 한음절 음이 깔끔하고 모국어가 아니기 때문에 느낄 수 있는 매력이 있다고 생각합니다. 한국어라면 듣자마자 머릿속에 의미를 알아버리기 때문에 괜히 부끄러워서 어쩔 수 없는 가사도 일본어로 들으면 더욱 음악처럼 들린다고나 할까. (웃음) 저는 예전에 영국에서 몇 년 살았기 때문에 영어는 할 수 있습니다만 일본어는 말하기와 듣기에 비해 한자가 약하기 때문에 미야오우가 쓴 일본어 가사를 번역기로 듣고 이해한 후 발음을 한글로 써서 노래를 녹음했습니다. 좀 더 음악적으로 발음해야 할 부분은 미야오우로부터 디렉팅을 받았어요. 예를 들면, '해의 시간'에서 '붉은 손' 부분을 'akaramu te'가 아니라 'akaraam te'처럼 발음하는 부분이라든지.

아트워크도 함께 제작했다고 하는데 음악제작과 같은 과정이었는지 궁금합니다.

「19시, 어느 여름날」이나 「사과의 꿈」에서는 미야오우가 스케치하고 멜로우 블러쉬가 그 스케치 파일을 받아 프린트하고 그것을 다시 트레이스 한 후에 페인팅 하는 방법으로 제작했습니다. 상념채색에서는 미야오우가 페인팅을 제작하고, 멜로우블러쉬가 디지털로 편집하는 과정에서 두 사람의 얼굴에 사진의 콜라주를 넣어 아트웍이 완성되었습니다. 탁구처럼 전체적으로 왔다갔다하면서 이건 이렇게 해보는 게 어때? 저건 저렇게 해보면 어떨까?'라는 식으로 의견을 모았습니다. 그런 점에서는 음악제작과 비슷하네요.

수록곡중에서 좋아하는 곡을 각각 들려주세요. 미야오우: '파레이돌리아(Pareidolia)'를 좋아합니다.이것은 멜로우 블러쉬의 데모부터 만들기 시작한 곡으로 잔잔한 어쿠스틱 사운드 속에서 노랫소리가 대화처럼 들려오는 곡입니다. 밤의 고요한 때에 들으면 마음이 후우 하고 떠나갑니다. 가사도 마음의 무늬를 노래하고 있어요. '해의 시간'도 좋아하는 것 같아요. 비교적 밝게 들리는 곡이지만사실 지금의 사회 상황, 즉, 밖에 나갈 수 없는 조금 슬픈 마음에서 생겨난 곡입니다. 과수원의 곡은 어떤 곡도 조금 애절함을 내포하고 있다고 생각합니다. Mellow Blush: 타이틀곡 '상념채색'에 가장 애착을 갖고 있습니다 제작하는데 시간이 많이 걸렸기도 하고 곡 후반부에 처음으로 랩을 했고 믹스할 때 수정을 많이 했었고 서로 열심히 했던 기억이 있어요. 그 때가 딱 이 맘때쯤이었는데 개인적으로는 당시의 정취도 가지고 있어서 좋아하는 곡입니다. 또 하나는 미야오우의 데모로부터 만든 「소엔」을 좋아합니다.신비롭고 애틋한 느낌을 정말 좋아해요.

LP, 카세트 릴리스에 대한 생각 3월에 디지털 릴리스를 거쳐서 6월에 LP, 그리고 9월에 카세트 테이프와 피지컬로 릴리즈 한 것에 대한 감상을 각각 들려주세요.

미야오우: 피지컬 릴리즈는 너무 기뻐요. 바쁘게 시간이 흘러가는 현대와 스트리밍의 시대에 '손에 닿는 것'으로서 음악을 즐긴다는 것은 시간이나 장소, 사람 등 여러 가지를 천천히 생각하는 일과 같다고 생각합니다. 그것은 매우 기분 좋은 시간이고 그런 의미에서도 저는 아날로그로 음악을 듣는 것을 좋아합니다.

Mellow Blush: 과수원이 디지털로 릴리즈하고 나서 뭔가 마법처럼 ‘LP를 만듭시다’, 그 다음에는 ‘카세트를 만듭시다’ 라는 요청이 온 것은 둘 다 전혀 상상하지 못했던 일이어서 꿈만 같아 너무 기뻤습니다.

LP, 카세트 테이프를 손에 넣은 분들께 메세지를 부탁드립니다.

우리의 음악이 아날로그 형태로 제작되어 청취자가 직접 앨범을 들어준다는 것은 어떤 의미에서는 과수원을 소중히 여겨주고 있다는 생각이 듭니다. 음악부터 아트웍, LP나 카세트 테이프 디자인까지 직접 제작했기 때문에 저희에게 있어서 앨범을 실물로 받았을 때의 감회가 남달랐던 것 같아요. 정말 감사합니다.

"진짜 과수원에서 공연해봐도 재밌겠다" 가까운 장래에 서로의 나라를 자유롭게 왕래할 수 있게 되어 직접 만나게 된다면 무엇을 하고 싶습니까? 각각 들려주세요.

미야오우 : 여러 곳에 다니면서 이야기도 하고 음악도 하고 싶어요. 하루 종일 곡을 만드는 것도 하고 싶네요. 한국에 가면 서울 동대문의 DDP에 가고, 그 후에 같이 삼겹살을 배불리 먹고 싶어요...한강에서 자전거도 타고 싶습니다. 멜로우 블로쉬씨가 일본에 오면 맛있는 밥을 먹거나 소중한 장소로 안내하고 싶습니다.

Mellow Blush: 한 번도 본 적이 없는데 채팅이나 전화로 이런 저런 얘기를 하다 보면 미야오우가 일본에 있는 동생 같아서 직접 만나도 지금같은 텐션으로 장난스럽게 이야기 할 수 있을 것 같아요. 저는 일단 미야오우랑 잼세션을 약간 놀이처럼 재밌게 해보고 싶어요. 음악 말고는 그와 함께 한국 또는 일본에 있는 미술관, 관광 명소나 맛집을 가보고 싶습니다. 언젠가 진짜 과수원에 가서 과수원 공연을 해보고 싶다고 농담을 한 적이 있었는데 그렇게 되어도 재미있을 것 같습니다.

마지막으로 앞으로의 활동에 대해서 들려주세요.

앞으로도 음악도 만들고 애니메이션도 만들 예정입니다. 코로나가 수습되면 라이브와 전시 등을 할 수 있으면 좋겠다고 은연히 생각하고 있습니다. 지금은 YouTube에서 과수원 라디오와 Vlog 등을 올리고 있기 때문에 괜찮다면 봐 주세요.
