favourite games (1/2):
may 5th, 2015:
cgy vs. ana
this game is probably my all-time favourite game in flames history. in the second series in a row where the flames were the underdogs in a season full of comebacks and late game fights for their lives, they pulled off yet another comeback, and what was their eventual last one of that season.
the resilience of this roster with their never-give-up attitude was something to behold on its own.
johnny gaudreau, in his rookie season at the time, ties the game up with 19:40 on the clock and 20 seconds to go.
mikael backlund jumps off the bench on a delayed penalty call against the ducks and stands beneath the right side of the offensive blue line. he cycles the puck back and forth with dennis wideman and tj brodie and eventually shoots through a screen.
the puck is in the net past frederik anderson. the goalie who, with minutes left in the third, appeared to allow a sam bennett goal slightly, but completely, past the red line, but was given a break by the refs and conference room in toronto when it was called “inconclusive” and was disallowed.
when asked what was going through his mind when scoring the game-winning goal, backlund states that during the series in vancouver, coach hartley had a heart-to-heart conversation with him, telling him to be a little more confident and shoot the puck. he saw the opportunity.
this season was the season johnny gaudreau, who was drafted 104th overall in 2011 and fresh off of winning the hobey baker, singlehandedly came in and dragged the flames out of a 6-year playoff drought, was robbed of the calder memorial trophy and bob hartley won the jack adams award.
here’s to better times ahead for this team.
