Hoppa Alba Hoppa
In the fifties the English café became a continental coffee bar with espresso changing tea. In The Golden Disc Harry and Joan (Lee Patterson and Mary Steele) convert Aunt Sara's decrepid café into a coffee bar (to encompass a document shop and a recording studio) eventually selling a young singer (Terry Dene) to No.1 inside the tune charts and cashing in on the begin of the rock and roll era. Unconsciously, it's far a picture of the past due fifties in Britain. It throws in a cornucopia of track styles, the manufacturers obviously try to section all. There is folk, instrumentals, skiffle, jazz, ballads and rock'n'roll. As a chunk of musical history it's far outstanding in capturing the sensation of changing times.
The fact that prime-time television or cinema could result in hysteria and phenomenally growth sales of rock'n'roll music was now not unknown. That said, the complete concept of those early pop musicals were in particular created for economic benefit in a failing film business with audiences that had dropped off because the late forties.
The opening song Dynamo by using Sonny Stewart's Skiffle Kings stretches from ambient diegetic to performance mode (through a dissolving montage of nightclub neons from one espresso bar into another) as the tune abruptly modifications from a studio recording to stay performance. This courageous musical edit did not idiot everyone. 'You can be annoyed through the way it every so often fades the music before the artists have quite finished' says Nina Hibben in the Daily Worker, (15/3/58)
Campbell Dixon's person view of the time sees 'a strange world of frenzied exhibitionism and phoney, cautiously 호빠 cultivated hysteria. He is aware of it exists... because the young playwrights guarantee us its big, and I'm sure it's far, idea just what its large of, besides own family forget about and bad teaching, I've virtually no idea. All that worries me here is that I locate it quite numbingly dull.
The change of the coffee bar throughout a musical number is sort of a religious transformation. The Gaggia espresso device is delivered into the newly refurbished espresso bar ceremoniously carried on a timber plinth like a pharaoh's mummy. It is located within the position of font on a bar serving as the altar. The jukebox pervades as the church organ and the Espresso espresso serves ritualistically as a relaxed form of communion. These easy traits are indicative of the brand new trend: the blood of rock'n'roll in religious undertones. The owner cannot believe the amount of coffee inebriated because the coffee bar begins to be successful.
The attractions of the espresso bar; that bizarre amalgam of pine, caffeine, bamboo and bullfight posters, were legion. The coffee bar offered teenagers a warm, welcoming assembly place. Not a determine in sight. They had been places you could hang approximately for an evening, spend a shilling on a espresso, go in at nine and pop out at eleven, and no one bothers you.
Terry Williams (as Dene turned into born) labored as a record-packer, who had a desire to sing at office parties (his Presley imitations were properly received) and become found by way of manufacturer Jack Good of 6.five Special. As Terry Dene, he almost had decent hits, however his cover of Marty Robbins' White Sport Coat turned into a larger hit for some other British group, and his second unmarried became overshadowed by means of a Sal Mineo version. Nevertheless he became an overnight sensation along with his Elvis impersonation.
Terry Dene's part within the film is overshadowed with the aid of his disastrously brief career (that could have matched any of the opposite artists mentioned). Scandal and his incapacity to address drink within the track clubs led him to be the primary UK rebel. In his documentary he bemoans that the ballads Decca pressured him to file had been no longer what he changed into about, he changed into a rock'n'roller while he played live. 'Girls swooned over him, boys wanted to punch him.' says manufacturer Jack Good inside the biopic of Dene's lifestyles.
After various tantrums regarding panes of glass and mirrors being drunkenly smashed, he lost the respect of his fans. The alcohol delivered out a violent streak in him that became now not there whilst he changed into sober. A slight and mild natured person from London's operating magnificence Eastend (Platchet), he was faced with National Service (following in Elvis's footsteps). The other soldiers taunted him and within 48 hours he had had a fearful breakdown and left the navy in disgrace. The press of the day scolded him for his pointless scandals and lack of ability to perform his obligation for his country.
The Golden Disc took him to achievement, which become quick lived, and he soon became portrayed because the 'bad boy' of British rock'n'roll. This left him jobless after his demobilisation. In 1964 he then located solace in Christianity and proceeded too produce gospel records.
The movie finale sees Mary Steele and American Lee Patterson launch a document agency and make a nation-wide hit with Dene's first report. A massive British enterprise nearly ruins them, but an even bigger American agency large-heartedly steps in and saves the day. As Nina Hibbin says in the Daily Worker (15/3/58) 'It's speculated to be a British film but its message is "Good vintage Uncle Sam".' This is in contrast to Expresso Bongo 'which is a rarity: a British film-musical of which we may be proud of and America envious.'
Expresso Bongo 1959 The Manager
A rowdy elegy to British kids culture inside the fifties Expresso Bongo 'plunges a savage paw into the mess that is display business.' It is a film spoof of The Tommy Steele Story, (written by means of Wolf Mankowitz), taken from the West End musical of the same name. So enter Bongo Herbert, the 'unbroken road Arab' as defined by his sensible supervisor Johnny Jackson (Harvey) into a lifestyles of Penny arcades, Prostitution, spaghetti, espresso coffee, garlic sausage, neon, parmigiani and salt beef and the whole plethora of necessary beatnik paraphernalia of props that shrouded the movie from tip to toe.
'In 1959, show business is entertainment of the morons, by way of the morons, for the morons. And you get not anything for nothing'.
This factor of view is put forward in Expresso Bongo. It may seem exaggerated but changed into no longer some distance from the fact in its portrait of Tin Pan Alley and Soho, wherein 'stars are made and broken by the chequebook' as Anthony Carthew found out in his scathing file wherein he also claimed 'This vicious story of display business may be very close to the truth.' John Waterman speaks of 'the penalty of writing a bitingly topical e-book or play or musical is that by the point the movie appears it may have lost some of its teeth.' Whatever the outcome it changed into his impression that 'in a single day making a song successes are not the subject of public interest as they had been 18 months ago, in the stage play.' Perhaps this comment spells the stop of the pop years, which are well known to be between 1956-1960, after which period the Beat Boom commenced which led to the 'British Invasion' of British Pop tune into the American charts. This started with the achievement of the Beatles in Richard Lesters Hard Days Night (1964).

Those gloved hands of his halted, fingertips hovering just barely from the screens. There was no denying that through all that he’s done, there was no amount of success in returning to that time. He had failed finding a way to save Grace from her fate. It was a fact through proof and logic, one he’s grown to accept.
“Let’s put this into perspective, shall we? This should be easy for you, since the trials you went through are... relevant to this.”
The screens dropped away, giving rise to a newer set of windows littered with ridiculous amounts of data. A few held graphs, but some displayed curious models. He swiped his hand over them, forcing them to turn and show their lengthy reports.
Tumblr media
“The reason we cannot return to that time isn’t because it’s merely misplaced,”       He openly mused, gently using the back of his hand to guide a cube dynamo away from being too close.
“You must’ve noticed it right away, that you could only jump back in time to a certain point. Even as you progressed, no matter how powerful you had gotten. It always halted at the same point and never went any further.”
A familiar, mesh image of a nasod was slid down. Dynamo. The reason they were in this damnable mess to begin with.
“Unfortunately, it was a misunderstanding. This little nasod never time traveled to begin with. Our whole life, our existence was ripped from that point of time and placed elsewhere along the ‘disc’ of time,” Another screen, detailing the heart rattling data dropped down, “Meaning that with how things are... We now never existed at that time. Only where we were put.”

We’ve had Tangerine for a year, and…
I love this bike.
Fun with the whole family
Will it fit?
Fits… Metrofiets!
…which is good, as it’s been a bumpy ride.
But let’s go back to the start.
Okay, we’ve had the parts for a year. When we first spotted Metrofiets’ closing sale, we’d been shopping around for an electric-assist bakfiets, and… well, we already loved them. A few friends have Metrofiets and they’re dreamy, but a bit pricey. With a closeout deal, however… we couldn’t pass it up. We’d been talking to Alex at Electric Lady about options. Should we do it? “It could be fun,” he said, bursting into his infectious laugh.
We went for it. All we’d need would be a motor, and… oh yeah, some parts.
It would take a while to come together.
First, for some color. Since we had a raw steel frame, we got to choose our own color, and Seattle Powder Coat has some special sparkle options!
The sparkle really pops!
Meet the very last Metrofiets box bike: Tangerine!
Seattle Powder Coat did a nice job.
It turned out great!
Tumblr media
Then we had a few conversations and negotiations on what all would go together. We wanted lots of gears, but a front triple just wouldn’t fit on the Metrofiets huge diameter seat post tube, so 10 gears will do. With the assist, it would be plenty.
Alex and Bike Swift recommended a new monster 1500 watt MAC motor, but we’d be waiting longer than we wanted. As regular bike riders, we went with the 500-watt Bafang rear hub motor which still has the power we’d need, and would get us riding sooner. I’m not saying we won’t upgrade someday…
Our friend Shirley offered a battery she had used for a previous motor setup on her Metrofiets… which turned out to be seriously high-powered and badass. I’ve run the battery completely out only once, and was smart enough to ride it uphill before it did. The bike is pretty darn heavy, so I wouldn’t recommend this.
Four-caliper hydraulic disc brakes would bring it all to a swift stop.
With a plan, we gathered the bits and got to work.
Frame on the stand at Electric Lady, ready to go!
We also insisted on a dynamo system for the lights, despite having a huge battery which could easily power such things. This way, the lights stay on even if the battery runs out!
Fenders and a waterproof canopy round out the build for northwest weather. BlaqPaks makes great waterproof covers, the new version of which has nifty magnetic latches.
Tumblr media
There are a few more details: a dropper-post, USB charger, and a serious rear rack.
That’s enough for now, gotta go for a ride. Let’s save some drama for next time!
Family Biking: The Tangerine Story We've had Tangerine for a year, and... I love this bike. ...which is good, as it's been a bumpy ride.

Aspire-Revolutionising Vaping
Aspire have been around pretty much since the start of vaping.  Their dedication to producing quality products time after time is unparalleled, how many products have you even owned in your lifetime?  Every time there is a new breakthrough in innovation, Aspire have always been there ahead of the pack.  So much so that Aspire has become vaping, ask any vaper where they started and they will tell you the Aspire Nautilus or the Atlantis.  However when you look back over the years, you can see Aspire have not only been there, they have truly changed vaping every single time.  So I want to take a journey into the past, to see exactly why Aspire have revolutionised vaping from the very early stages of vaping and how they continue to stand out from the crowd.
      Where It All Started
Aspire back 2013 were an emerging company who were finding their feet in the slowly growing vaping market. They released high quality products that were popular but none really stood out from the competition. Vaping was in its infancy and people knew how a tank worked, how a coil was meant to be made and what experience you get from vaping. Until this point the market was starting to stagnate, many products morphed together and for better or worse, there wasn’t really much choice. This changed however with the release of arguably the most important product of the vaping industry, the Aspire Nautilus. Aspire took what everyone knew about vaping and gave back something that blew its competition out the water. Featuring a brilliantly constructed tank, coils that gave long life and excellent flavour and overall performance, the Nautilus didn’t just become popular, it became THE tank to own.  So many vapers can say the Nautilus started them off on their journeys, including myself but the impact that the Nautilus tank had has been unrivalled. It dominated the MTL market for years, finally usurped by its follow up the Nautilus 2. So many people can owe their vaping hobby to the Nautilus and even now it stands out among its peers as still the best on the market in its class.
    Revolutionising Vaping
After dominating with the Nautilus, vaping had finally moved up a few gears and was finally starting to become more than just a smoking cessation tool, it was becoming a hobby for people. However before the year was out, Aspire were ready to change vaping forever and give birth to the industry as it is known today with their brand new release, the Aspire Atlantis.  It was the very first sub ohm tank on the market and it blew away perceptions of what vaping could be. Featuring bigger clouds, more flavour and the same excellent coil life, the Atlantis truly did change the game completely for so many vapers. It is amazing to think now that vaping back then was blown away by its release, no-one thought vaping could be bigger and better but Aspire were there to prove anything is possible and they were continuing to push boundaries in vaping. The later release of the Atlantis 2 improved on every aspect of the original and provided much better airflow, better and bigger coils and even introducing Temperature control coils to vapers, it was the choice of many at the time and it stood tall for a long time.
    Continually Innovating
2015 saw the release of Aspire’s follow up tank, the Triton. The tank although great quality didn’t prove to be as popular with vapers with the Atlantis 2 released a few months prior and still dominating the sub ohm market.  However with the Triton, Aspire proved they were always innovating ideas and changing what was possible. The Triton proved to be the first top fill sub ohm tank on the market that was readily available. No more having to open up the whole tank to fill, Aspire developed a way that made it so much easier to vape with and as a result completely changed the way tanks were designed from that point on. Sub ohm tanks from this point on looked to copy Aspire in this way but they remained the masters of their own craft and the release of the Triton 2 improved in every way and offered vapers a genuinely excellent sub ohm tank alongside their ever popular Atlantis.
    Changing Perception
In 2016, Aspire still extremely popular with their Triton 2 and Atlantis 2 tanks went back to the drawing board.  Much like 2 years prior to this, everyone knew how a sub ohm tank worked. Everybody new how the coils were meant to be designed, how the top fill worked and what it was meant to look like.  Then Aspire came back with something that changed this perception completely and released the Aspire Cleito. Before now the coil sat at the bottom of the tank, other companies looked in ways to improve vapour travelling up the chimney. The Cleito however went one step further and delivered the vapour straight to the vaper’s mouth instead turning the chimney into the coil. The idea was again revolutionary as it took what was possible and smashed it. What was the end result is arguably another one of the biggest selling products of all time and one of the most popular. The Cleito improved on sub ohm tanks in every way and opened the door for creativity and thinking outside the box.  It changed the way its top fill worked to make it easier again for vapers and it again become a staple in most vapers collection, a day to day tank that provided a quality vape.
    Pushing the Boundaries
For a long time, the Cleito and Cleito 120 proved to be extremely popular tanks long after their release.  It was a testament to their quality that they were big for so long, even now vapers stick by their trusty Cleito for a lovely quality vape.  But in December 2017, Aspire were ready to release their next big idea, one again that changed perception on how a sub ohm tank is meant to work.  With the release of the Skystar kit, the Revvo tank again took expectation and blew it away.  The first disc coil tank with the Arc coils and a top coil design rather than bottom, it provided a whole new way to perceive vaping and the intuitive wicking design as a result meant dry hits and leaking were a thing of the past.  Even featuring a fill valve at the top, taking the original top fill of the Triton, the Revvo tank not having to be opened to fill was amazing.  It made vaping cost effective and easy, giving vapers a quality vape at the same time.  Even now Aspire still have no equal in disc coils, they were the first and still very much remain the best.
    Birth of A New Generation
Around 5 months after the launch of the Skystar kit, Aspire had another trick up its sleeve that again paved the way for the future of vaping.  Squonking had came from its infancy and was starting to become popular with more advanced vapers.  The perception at the time was that Squonking was only for the pros, it was very exclusive and it put many vapers off the idea of ever trying it.  Then the Feedlink released, featuring a semi regulated safe design for any vaper to enjoy and doubled up with the only stock coil squonking tank to date with the Feedlink Revvo Boost, Aspire had taken the market and turned it up to 10.  It gave vapers another option in how to vape and it was again Aspire at the heart of it.  Continuing to push the limits of possibility, the Feedlink to date still is a very popular product through its excellent construction and ease of use for vapers.
    The Future
It has been exciting to see Aspire continually revolutionise vaping over the years and there is no reason why it can’t continue. In between the big releases, they have continued to produce excellence with the Breeze pod systems still a top choice for most vapers, the Dynamo giving a beautiful looking dual 21700 device and even the new Tigon kit giving vapers choice of how they want to vape.  The kings of the vaping industry, it doesn’t look like it will stop any time soon and Aspire have proven to be the one company who you look forward to see what their new release is, for the moment they want to change perceptions of possibilities again.  Others may want to compete, but there is only one company out there continuing to Aspire for greatness.

It’s easy to buy a bike, but it’s often a lot harder to actually ride it. Bikes have a lot of advantages over cars, but ease of use is not one of them. If you don’t have a strong biking habit, a lot of excuses can and will creep in. “I don’t want to wear different clothes.” “What if it rains?” “I need to stop by the grocery store and don’t want to carry my groceries on my handlebars.” Let these excuses win often enough and your bike will end up in the dusty corner of the garage or basement until you sell it on craigslist for $50.00.I worked at a bike shop, and I built up a commuter bike to remove as many inconveniences as possible, so all I had to do different to take my bike instead of my car was throw on a helmet on and maybe a jacket. While my coworkers were bragging about how they reduced the weight of their bike by 20 grams, I was adding kilograms to mine to make it more suited for running errands in all kinds of weather. I’m sharing my process on how to remove as many excuses as possible and make your bike as convenient as a car, so you will be prepared to take your bike out in more situations without a whole lot of extra planning for every single trip.Couple things to point out: Most of what I’m going to recommend here is adding accessories to your bike to make it more convenient. So some of these suggestions will get a bit expensive. I am also linking to a few websites, including amazon, to better show you what I am talking about. These are not necessarily specific endorsements. If I don’t mention a particular brand, then it is probably just the first search result I found that looks like it meets my criteria. I do not have an affiliate program with any of these websites and I am not receiving any sort of compensation from them. And of course, all the information here does not replace actual research on your part or advice from a bike shop. I will point out any tricky situations I am aware of, and all of these accessories are designed so the handy home-user can install them easily. A lot of these accessories don’t come with instructions, so look up a tutorial online before installing. And if you don’t feel confident in your DIY skills, take it in to a bike shop for installation.First some essentials: I’ll get into specific issues with bike commuting and how to fix them in a minute. But before you start adding optional accessories, here’s a couple things every serious cyclist should have on hand:Helmet: Duh. Always ride safe. If you haven’t been happy with helmets previously, consider going to a bike shop and getting a nicer one that will fit better.Pump(s): Check your tires at least once a week. Biking on low tires takes a LOT more effort. I’d recommend a nice floor pump with a gauge, and a frame pump in case you run into trouble on the road.Patch kit/spare tube/tire levers: If you’re going to be biking for reasons other than leisure and need to be somewhere on time, make sure that a nail or shard of glass won’t bring your day to a screeching halt. Keep either a patch kit or spare tube with you, and learn how to take the tire off BEFORE you have to do it in a real-life scenario. Also make sure you know how to use your frame pump beforehand too.Tools (optional): Buying accessories for your bike can be expensive. Paying your local bike shop to install them will be more expensive. Most accessories I talk about here will go on with normal hand tools. EVERYTHING ON THE BIKE WILL BE METRIC! The most common tools you will need for these accessories are 3,4, and 5 mm Allen keys, various wrenches from 8mm to 15mm, and some screwdrivers. If you are planning to do bike maintenance yourself, a great place to start would be getting a good set of metric Allen keys, sizes 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10, and metric wrenches, sizes 6-17. There are more specific tools out there, but these will get you started.Chain lube: The most missed maintenance issue is chain lube. You should be lubing your chain once a week. This will keep the chain from squeaking but also extend the lifespan of the chain and your gears. Make sure you use a bike specific lubricant like this one. Spray lubricants like WD-40 can actually blast contaminants INTO your chain’s bushings, and if you’re not careful, they can get elsewhere and cause trouble. If you have disc brakes, be especially careful of getting anything on the rotors or brake pads. I once had to replace $60 worth of brake parts on a brand new bicycle because the customer got careless with WD-40. Apply the lube by hand and wipe the excess off with a non-linty rag.The weather When I vowed to ride my bike more, I had a long and wet June while I waited until I could afford a new bike. That meant a lot of days pedaling in the rain and daydreaming about all the accessories I would get to make riding in rain easier. Here’s what I got, in order from highest to lowest importance:Wet lube: In the essentials, I recommended dry lube. It works great, but it does wash off easily, so if you are going to be biking in wet weather, it’s good to use wet lube. It’s thicker, more viscous, and keeps the water out of the chain bushings. Since it stays on your chain more, it does attract dirt more. So I recommend wiping your chain down after your ride and relubing it with dry lube before too long.An impermeable saddle: If you’re thinking of biking in wet weather, think about that when you choose a saddle. Most regular saddles have no problems with rain. It’s only leather and perhaps the fuzzy gel ones that can be trouble. Consider that before throwing down for a leather Brooks saddle. In a pinch, you can throw a plastic bag over your saddle, but that takes away the aesthetic appeal a bit.Rain coat: Pretty obvious, but while you can get away with just a regular coat in the rain if you’re just running from the car to the store, you will get absolutely soaked if you do the same on the bike. If you’re buying a new rain coat, consider getting a hi-visibility one. With a little bit of digging you can find some reflective options that won’t make you look like you should be directing traffic. Also look for one with vents, since you’ll be exercising while out there and a rain coat can’t keep you dry if you’re sweating under it.Fenders: Keeps the rain off your back and knees. You can get a clip-on rear fender for pretty cheap that works well, but if your bike is there to get you around no matter the weather, it’s worth considering shelling out for a permanent set. Short of grabbing a rain coat, there’s no extra step before hopping on the bike. If your bike has disc brakes, make sure the fenders you get are disc brake specific. Your fenders should come with specific installation instructions.Waterproof pannier: Make sure any panniers you get are waterproof. Again, it just eliminates one step and one excuse to keep you from hopping your bike if there’s a light rain. See the Running Errands section for more details.Lights: I researched several different lights when building up my bike. My goal was to have lights that would always be on my bike, with no risk of theft. In the end, after weighing all the pros and cons, I stuck with a conventional set of headlights and taillights. If you are going to be biking at night, I’d recommend something with at least 450 Lumens for the headlight. Anything less and you’ll be relying on streetlights to see your path. Most places in the U.S. require the lights to blink to be street legal. You can buy theft-proof bike lights but the brightest light they have is 300 lumens, which in my opinion not bright enough for biking at night or in really bad weather. I’ve tried solar powered lights that need a special tool to be removed. The manufacturer’s website claims you can charge them up during the summer and ride all through the winter, but I barely managed to get them fully charged to survive a single round trip biking to work in the day time and biking back at night. And the light isn’t strong enough to light your path. I’m curious about lights that use your bike wheel as a generator, but they don’t work with disc brakes. Probably the best bet would be to get a dynamo hub and build up a wheel around that to your permanently mounted lights. Then you can have light anytime you’re moving without ever having to think about it and with no chance of someone swiping your light because you forgot to pop it off. It would require building a wheel from scratch, which in parts alone would have cost as much as the rest of my bike. That was more than I was willing to do/spend, so I just went with a 700 lumen headlight and have to remember to bring it with me.Cycling cap: A small brimmed cap that has a low profile to go under your helmet. Helps keep the rain out of your eyes, and doesn’t add much hassle. Just put it on before donning your helmet.Running errands: Right now, I take my bike to the grocery store 60% of the time. But an average bike right off the sales floor isn’t equipped for hauling even a small amount of groceries, and if you don’t want to ride back home with your knees banging the shopping bags hanging from your handlebars, you’ll need to add some accessories to your bike before biking your groceries home isn’t a gigantic pain in the ass.Rack: Pretty simple. Putting a rack on your bike massively extends its utility. You can hang a pannier (more on them later) from the rack instead of using a backpack, keeping your back sweat-free. With the addidion of a bungee cord or more permanent strap system, you can hold things on top of it. If your bike has disc brakes, you may need a wider rack to accommodate the extra wide axle. Also, some bikes with unusual geometry may require extra-long bars for installing the rack. This and the folding basket below are probably the trickiest accessories to install, and where you might be better off having them professionally installed.Folding basket: This was a major piece of the puzzle for me. I didn’t want my bike permanently widened out with a pair of baskets off the rack. But I also wanted to be prepared to stop and do some shopping on my way home without worrying about how I would carry everything. The folding rack was the perfect solution. When I need it, it unfolds in a couple seconds and I can put stuff in it. When I don’t need it, or space is tight, it folds up quickly and it’s more or less unnoticeable off the side of my bike. It means I can make unexpected stops while on my bike to pick up a few things without having to double back in my car later. I have this Wald one, and it’s very nice. It was quite a pain to install though. Be prepared for a bit of frustration if you go the DIY route. This was the one part of these accessory installs that I used a power tool.Pannier: I mentioned this one a bit under weather. The one I have and love is this Banjo Brothers waterproof pannier and backpack. It nearly effortlessly turns from one to the other and since it’s waterproof I can take it every time. The first time I biked to a shopping mall, locked my bike up, and turned my pannier to a backpack and went shopping, I felt like a goddamn superhero. This flexibility takes a lot of anxiety out of running errands on my bike.Water bottle cages: Pretty self-explanatory. Carry water with you when you bike. I have 2 mounted, one on the down tube at a diagonal, and one on the seat tube vertical. I can carry my coffee mug in there without spilling too much. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice your second cup of coffee just because you want to bike in.Compact shopping bags: Not really sure what to call these, other than the brand name I know, Chico Bags. They fold up into a small size and unfold quickly. You can get sling ones to go over your shoulder, or the smaller ones easily go into the folding basket. Just a good thing to with you for unexpected stops.Kickstand: A lot of people are surprised when bikes don’t automatically come with kickstands. And for a lot of people, a kickstand doesn’t make sense for the kind of riding they do. I am using my bike to commute, and am more interested in convenience than weight. I got a two-legged kickstand for added stability. Keep in mind, not every single bike will accept every kickstand. If you get one with a top plate like this standard one that every bike store carries, it will work for 90% of the bikes you would expect to take a kickstand. If you bought a $5,000 tri bike with areo bars and bladed spokes for reduced wind drag, you’re not going to get a kickstand on there, sorry. Also, kickstands come in a set length and may need to be cut down with a hacksaw to fit your bike. You should be able to turn the handlebars all the way from left to right without the bike falling over. If you don’t feel comfortable measuring and cutting a kickstand, consider taking it to a bike shop.Clothing/comfort: A pair of cushioned bike shorts makes a ride a lot more enjoyable. But they’re also a lot less comfortable for anything else you’re doing. Unless you’re going to bring a change of clothes with you, bike shorts aren’t a practical piece of attire once you step off your bike. It’s not necessary to get spandexed up to ride the bike, but casual clothing does present some barriers to biking. Here’s a couple common issues and how I address them.Comfortable saddle: We’re not talking about a carbon fiber road bike with skinny tires and aero bars here, we’re talking about a commuter bike. Hopefully you figured that out while installing the fenders, rack and folding basket. Saddles come in all shapes, sizes, and materials. And second only to making sure you have the right sized bike, this is the single most important element for your comfort. Find a saddle that makes sense for the type of riding you do, and if that means it’s a gel-cushioned saddle, then go for it. Find one that doesn’t rely on the cushioned posterior of bike shorts to let you ride comfortably.Pedals/Shoes: This is a big one. If I had to stop and consider what kind of shoes I’m wearing when deciding to ride or drive, it would cut down my biking drastically. Here’s a secret: most bikes are sold with the cheapest pedals available. Even fancy bike shop bikes are shipped with cheapo pedals. Some, like $5,000 road bikes, aren’t shipped with any pedals at all, because they know that pedals are one of the first things serious riders replace. That means if you haven’t installed new pedals, your bike is probably equipped with cheap pedals that aren’t designed for the kind of riding you do or the shoes you will wear. Sometimes, just upgrading to a pair or metal pedals with more grip might do the trick. There are also systems with toe cages that will let you strap your feet in. I find these to be more of a pain than they’re worth. If you’re not going to strap your feet in for every ride, they’re a hassle as the added weight makes the cages naturally hang upside down. There’s also clipless systems, but those involve special shoes and cleat systems which are more complicated than the type of riding we’re discussing here. If you’ve ever seen someone in biker gear in the store or coffee shop and they click with every step like they’re wearing horseshoes, those are clipless shoes. What I recommend is a platform pedal like these I have a similar pair on my bike. They work and feel just like a normal bike pedal. Designed for winter adventure biking, the large pins grip effortlessly onto every kind of shoe for an effortless connection. I can ride my bike while wearing my heavy-duty safety toe boots without any problems. Some of the ones I saw on Amazon are just as cheap as any other pair of pedals. I would recommend at least getting metal ones.Pedals come in two standards, ½” and 9/16”. This measurement is the diameter of the spindle that screws into your crank. Kid’s bikes and BMX bikes are usually ½”, adult bikes are almost always 9/16”. Make sure the pedals you get are the correct spindle size. Swapping out pedals is fairly easy, every pedal I encountered will come off with either a 15mm wrench or 6mm Allen wrench. One thing to watch out for is the left pedal is reverse threaded. It will unscrew to the right and tighten to the left. Remember it with this simple mnemonic: Your left foot goes on the left pedal and it tightens to the left. Any pair of pedals you get will have the left and right clearly marked. Double-check it before installation to avoid an expensive problem.Outerwear: Naturally the weather will be a bigger impact on your day if you’re biking rather than driving. Nice days are nicer, bad weather days are worse, and even the moderate days can be a bit challenging when you’re kitting up for some bike-based errands. If it’s one of those days where you can’t decide on short or long sleeves, biking can make these decisions even more difficult. Chilly days get chillier once you start pedaling at 10-15 miles per hour, but bundle up too much and you can overheat. The real problem here is the wind of your own passage. A fluffy sweatshirt can keep you warm when you’re walking along, but wind can blow right through it. I recommend a light windbreaker like this one I found in REI’s Outlet. It will keep the wind off, but is light enough to keep you from overheating on those days where the sun is playing peekaboo. An added benefit of paying a bit more for bike specific gear is they’re often designed with high-visibility stripes for extra safety. It’s far from fashionable, but you can get a hi-vis vest pretty cheap. They’re lightweight to not really impact your ride and can be easily stowed if you want to stop catching everyone’s eye once you step off your bike.Gloves: Everything I just said about jackets also holds true for gloves. A moderately chilly but otherwise beautiful day can turn into a miserable bike ride if your hands, one of the most sensitive parts of your body, are cold from the wind. Fingerless bike gloves are nice on long rides for added cushioning, but won’t keep your hands warm on inclement weather days. I recommend having a pair of full-finger gloves ready as well. You can get bike specific ones, or a pair of thin full-finger gloves that you can slide under the bike gloves, or you can just get some generic gloves and they can work fine too. The key thing here is comfort and flexibility. You still need to be able to use your brake and shift levers in whatever gloves you go with.I won’t go into detail about winter biking, since I don’t bike much in the cold. But your local bike shop will be thrilled to help you get gear to stave off your latitude’s worst weather.Biking around town instead of loading into a car can be a great joy and often a way to relax in a way that cars don’t allow you to. I love the ease of which I can use my bike without a lot of anxiety about whether I would be better off taking my car. I’ve cut my car traveling down by a third, and I never have to worry about unexpected problems or being asked to grab a gallon of milk on my way home. I hope that if you have read this far, you will also enjoy a greater amount of freedom with your bike and find yourself biking more often. via /r/LifeProTips
