Japanese Gaming Glossary
I always find the differences in lingo between different parts of the gaming world fascinating, so here's a non-comprehensive list of all the Japanese terms I've discovered so far; lemme know if there's any others I'm unaware of and I'll throw them in there
Bakage (バカゲー) - Literally "stupid game;" a game that is outright ridiculous or nonsensical in terms of its premise or aesthetics, though may be perfectly fine in terms of gameplay quality.
BGM - Short for background music, always used instead of "OST".
Belt Action (ベルトスクロールアクション) - Beat 'em ups, named after the levels which are scrolled horizontally, like a conveyor belt.
Block Kuzushi (ブロックくずし) - Literally "block breaker;" a game where a ball is bounced off a paddle to break blocks above, in the vein of Breakout.
Dot Eater (ドットイート) - A top-down maze game that typically involves avoiding enemies and collecting items, in the same vein as Pac-Man.
Eroge (エロゲ) - Short for "erotic game"; a title that features erotic, if not outright pornographic content.
Exploratory Action (探索型アクション) - 2D action games with a honeycomb map that require the player to explore, and return to previous areas; known in the West as metroidvanias.
Gaiden (外伝) - Literally "side story"; a common suffix in game titles, typically used to denote a spin-off (e.g. Resident Evil Gaiden, Fire Emblem Gaiden, etc.).
Game Center (ゲームセンター) - An arcade, sometimes shortened to gesen (ゲーセン).
Invader Game (インベーダーゲーム) - An incredibly early 2D shooter, in the same vein as Space Invaders.
Kinetic Novel (キネティックノベル) - A visual novel with no choices or branching routes; a linear story that plays out straight with no agency on the player's part. Was conceived as a brand by the visual novel developer Key, but has become a proprietary eponym for the entire subgenre.
Kusoge (糞ゲー) - Literally "crappy/shitty game;" games of incredibly poor quality and polish, though many have something of a cult following because of these traits.
LaserDisc Game (レーザーディスク ゲーム) - A game that runs on a LaserDisc, typically interactive movies following in the wake of Dragon's Lair. Typically shortened to LD Game (LDゲーム).
Nukige (抜きゲー) - Literally "masturbation game"; unlike eroge (see above) which has elements of eroticism, nukige is strictly pornography and has no real emphasis on gameplay.
Nurugame (ヌルゲー) - Literally "lukewarm game"; derogatory term for a title that is exceedingly easy, or intended for a casual audience.
Omake Mode (おまけモード) - A Bonus Mode, or side mode that is separate from the main game. Usually features a different playable character or style of gameplay, and is typically unlocked.
Pasokon (パソコン) - Short for personal computer, or PC. A game released for computers would be a pasokon gemu.
RTA - Short for "real time attack"; the Japanese term for speedrunning.
Sound Novel (サウンドノベル) - Predecessor to the visual novel subgenre; text is displayed across the entire screen, rather than in text boxes, and with a heavy emphasis on sound design. Is a copyrighted term by Spike Chunsoft, but has become a proprietary eponym for the entire subgenre.
TATE Mode (縦モード) - Literally "vertical / portrait" mode; a setting that allows the game to be flipped for a vertically oriented display. Common for arcade ports.
Zako (ザコ) - Literally small fish, or small fry. Weak, non-boss enemies that typically appear towards the start of a game (e.g. Waddle Dees from the Kirby series).
