Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #140

Today we will cover another NPC (in this case a pair) before I start delving into fish past...since, all that’s left aquatically in ACNH are NPCs and villager species I stupidly missed...oof. But today we will talk about Lottie, and by extension her brother, Lyle. Lottie appears as the Happy Home Paradise CEO in the paid DLC that was just released. Both Lottie and her brother are River Otters, which is different from Pascal’s Sea Otter, and of course I will explain...as well as share the bad news I mentioned...

So, yes, Lyle and Lottie are river otters, for which there are quite a few species, and we’ll get to that in a moment. Otters are mammals - so, warm-blooded, fur, milk, live babies, the whole thing - and they are part of the Family Mustelidae, the weasels, badgers, wolverines, and etc. short, carnivorous fluffy bois. All otters are distinct from other mustelids in that they are aquatic, whether fresh or marine. Now, Pascal is also an otter, a sea otter, which is different from a river otter, in more ways than just where they live.

River otters are actually much smaller than sea otters and their fur it less dense. Not only that, but though both types love to swim, the River Otter can be found in fresh and saltwater, as well as on land when it’s resting. Sea Otters are only found in saltwater and they rarely ever come to land - they will even sleep while floating on the surface! River Otters and Sea Otters also swim differently, with River Otters swimming in the way you would expect a dog to, belly down, while sea otters float on their backs when they aren’t diving. Lastly, where Sea Otters only have one pup at a time, River Otters can have litters of two to three. 

Anyway, pinning Lyle and Lottie down to species was a bit hard, as it is for NPCs who are much more stylized than the creatures you fish or dive for. Lottie is also pink which...isn’t a normal color for otters. So, I’m going with proximity, and wouldn’t you know it, there is a Japanese River Otter, Lutra nippon. 

Here’s the kicker though - it’s extinct. 

As of August of 2012, the Japanese River Otter was officially considered extinct after no one had spotted one officially since 1979. Overhunting spelled doom for this animal, as well as the pollution and habitat destruction that seems to come with river-living near humans. Once considered an outlying subspecies of the Eurasian River Otter (Lutra lutra), it was found to be a distinct species some time after it’s extinction in the 1990′s! It’s still hotly debated, but the JRO is still considered a Japanese treasure and is still the official animal symbol of Ehime Prefecture.

Considering ACNH has no problem including relatively recent extinct animals (looking at Dodo airlines), it doesn’t shock me that this would be included. However, Lyle and Lottie could also just be generic river otters, and I’m blowing this out of proportion...as one does.

It’s weird to me how Lyle in Animal Crossing is apparently an otter, like is that canon now? I was always under the impression that he was a weasel because weasel’s are “sneaky” animals and in Wild World he’s always trying to scam you with his fake insurance, plus it’s implied that he used to work with Redd whose a fox another sneaky animal. He also looks nothing like the other otter in the series, Pascal, but I suppose that could be because Pascal is a sea otter while Lyle is a river otter.
