The History of the Rescue Aid Society an essay by Albert E. Chairmouse, Current Director and Chairman of the Rescue Aid Society (1994-present).

If you happen to live in a Magick friendly town, or happen to have some connection to Magicks, you may well have heard of the Rescue Aid Society. It is considered, by most, to be a myth or conspiracy, but in fact, it is neither. The Rescue Aid Society has existed for thousands of years, taking on various shapes and forms. Over the many years that the Rescue Aid Society has been shaping itself into the organisation you are now being inducted into, we have extended our reach around the globe, watching over and protecting Magick populations from Albania to Zimbabwe. We strive to always do what is right, and hope that you will help us in our mission.
Our story begins in 405 B.C, in Ancient Greece. Alexander of Euboea, a simple farmer, found a lynx resting in one of his fields. His first response was to call the local soldiers to kill the beast but, upon noticing that it was wounded, Alexander stopped to help. He healed the lynx as best he could, and coaxed it into a shelter typically used to house goats in the night. When Alexander went to check on the lynx, he found that in its place lay a man, naked and lean-looking, with the same healing injury sported by the beast. The man explained; he was Antipoles, formally of Thesally, and he was a shape shifter - he could move between his lynx and human skin as he pleased, but having been injured, he had been too tired to transform again to seek help. He had been sure that he was about to die, until Alexander came to his aid. In return for saving his life, he offered to help Alexander on his farm.
We know this, of course, because Antipoles documented all of it in writing. It is also important to bare in mind that Greece has always been a relatively Magick-friendly country, and though certain communities drove Magicks out, they tended to be a minority. Still, after this event Alexander's farm was known as a safe haven for Magicks. As he took on more lands, he began to house Magicks and Mundus alike. Anyone who came to him looking for work or shelter was greeted with a warm bed and a hearty meal, in exchange for work.
When Alexander died a few decades later, the people he had housed continued the upkeep of the farm and its values. The farm is thought to existed until the Roman occupation of Greece, when it was taken over by a Roman philanthropist, Cassius Insaletius. There are few records from this time, but it is known that with the rise of Catholicism in the Roman State and across the empire, the farm was dissolved, and the handful of Magicks who still lived there split into small groups that moved out across the globe.
A small faction settled in Rome, helping Magicks who were being persecuted or driven out by Catholics, giving them a home for a short while before they could be sent elsewhere. They formed so called "underground" academies for Magicks to learn to control their powers, and taught willing Mundus how they could help Magicks. These Mundus then spread, forming communities in what would later become France, Spain, England, and many other European Countries. They entered local communities, helping to barter partnerships between local Magicks and Mundus, aided by the harsh grip of Christianity that had been forced upon these communities. The alliance led to the conquering and dissolution of the Roman Empire and, for some time, peace.
The evidence of Magicks and Mundus working together in this time is visible in etchings by the tribes themselves, but involvement by what were then known as the AAS (in Latin, Alexander Autem Sectatores - the Followers of Alexander) comes mostly from accounts of historians in the Renaissance, who wrote down songs and spoken poems that had been passed down for centuries.
After this time, a period of peace ensued, and with it the AAS mostly disbanded. There was some Magick upheaval after the Crusades, but there is no reference to the AAS being revived. It is not until the Renaissance period, again, that we begin to see some kind of group forming. In England, a small group of philosophers began to call themselves the AAS, using the mantle to advocate pro-magicism, despite the ongoing witch trials across the country. Some factions of the AAS did aid accused witches in this time, helping them to Ingary, though many, sadly, were put to death.
The Rescue Aid Society as we know it began to take shape with the birth of the Industrial Revolution. As the British Empire began to expand and Victoria took the throne, Magicks were pushed further and further into the fringes of society, and to help them was strictly not done. It is in this time that the RAS took on its current name, and slipped into the shadows. Most Historians, in fact, believe that the AAS and the RAS were two separate bodies, with the RAS rising as a response to Victorian Policy. In fact, they were one in the same, though the RAS took up far more action than the AAS of the previous few centuries. They found housing and employment for Magicks, helping them build lives for themselves in towns and cities, where they could make their own way.
Though we do believe that small groups of people with Alexander's influence spread to Asia and Africa, it is mostly believed that the globalisation of the Society occurred with the improvement of ocean travel, and the beginnings of commercial flights. As travelling became easier, the Society began to make itself more available to countries were crimes and atrocities against Magicks were more common. Agents were recruited from all over the globe to help, going undercover, and doing their best to save as many lives as possible.
With the second world war, agents of various countries were pulled into their own national armies, and only a few managed to avoid the draft. They made their new head quarters in New York, after the London head quarters was destroyed in the Blitz. The few remaining Agents worked to make sure that Magicks in the midst of war were not discriminated against, halting mass killings and imprisonments. It is also during this time the RAS began recruiting women, and at the end of the war, there were more female agents on staff than males.
Since the end of the second world war, the Society has functioned mostly as it does now, working more on high priority cases, in more dangerous locations. Our agents have spies and soldiers, and conduct their business undercover. The Society are known in most Magick towns, and are thus referred to in various ways, so that our identity may remain a secret. We look now to you, new recruit, to do your best to help Magicks, as the ancestors of the Rescue Aid Society have done before you.
