hi! i was hoping i could get your opinion on something. i know you go to pomona, and i was just recently accepted into 2 of the claremont colleges! i am between those two and an instate school where i'd pay 7k/year. although the instate school is 77% white and v conservative; i'm a gay poc. i don't qualify for any money from claremont, but i think i could pay loans off. i want to go into biomed research. in your opinion, what is the 5c life like? is the full tuition worth it? thank u!!!
im very biased because in all honestly, when i compare my life and lifestyle at a 5c college to the experiences of my friends at other colleges, i feel like i have a really good deal going for me, and any major complaints i have are more general to the institution of higher learning, and not anything my college is specifically bad at when compared to most other colleges
first: the 5cs *are* super diverse, but moreso scripps, pitzer, and pomona- hmc and cmc are still a little less diverse in terms of ethnic distribution and what have you, but 1) still pretty good and 2) youre around the 4 other colleges and have access to 5c resources for poc
im doing neuroscience rn and if youre doing biomed assumedly you’d have to be a cell/molecular bio major or a pre-med major; both are pretty strong majors at pomona, but not at hmc. the other three colleges have a keck institute for their science majors that i cant attest to being exceptionally good cause ive never taken a class there, but im sure given the endowment of those three colleges combined itll still be a strong program. you can also take classes at pomona for certain requirements if you want, i think.
i think if you *think* you can pay debt off and you want to be in a college environment youre likely to enjoy on a day to day basis moreso than youd enjoy, say, a conservative environment where you’d deal with micro and macroaggressions pretty frequently, please come to a 5c! cmc is our more “right” college, and its still only like, 30% conservative.
5c life is honestly #amazing. not everyone has this experience of course- i have friends who came here expecting to be better off from their mental illnesses, say, and that didnt happen because the colleges remain an academic space that put strain on their students. however im a neuro major and as such have a very busy schedule and im still happy with my time scheduling- its better than high school for me
the classes are good, the professors are easy to get to- my largest class is 24 people, my smallest last semester was 12 people- and get research opportunities with, the weather is wonderful if youre into the sun, theres so many things to do in the surrounding areas, theres clubs and events always that are interesting (screenings of important movies, like moonlight/hidden figures/13th in public spaces to make them accessible to all, activist spaces), theres a lot of general resources that are available to you, you can ask for money from the school for many things if you provide good reason (glasses! laptops!).
im very happy at pomona, i feel like im going to my dream school. lmk if you have more questions! you can message me !!
