I just recently discovered your old Flight Rising art and oh my gosh !!! it’s so lovely! <3 the way you draw Mirrors really makes me want to get some more of my own. any chance you have some thoughts about what breeds Vasco & Machete would be?
Ah, thank you! I think mirrors are still my favorite breed, they have that hungry and desperate stray dog energy that I respond to. Too bad they tend to be sort of overlooked.
Off the top of my head, I think Machete would be a neurotic spiral? Or maybe a skydancer? I keep getting nocturne vibes from Vasco for some reason, but he wouldn't be a bad guardian either.

Sharing the sketch for March
welp I didn't finish this before the end of the month but I made some good progress. I draw terraces so quickly when in the sketch stage, then I go into rendering and have to redraw the same terrace 10 times because the perspective looks wrong.
please enjoy my barely sketched in skydancer as well lol

I sincerely think your style would go great with sexy dragon women. There is a trend lately where Rule 34 artists are drawing sexy dragons. What do you think?
I dont rlly draw things based on trends and I don't like to check r34 :(
-HOWEVER, I do think dragons anthros/scalies are cool (i'm just not the best at drawing them and i already have so many oc's to juggle PFF) I do play FlightRising (its like neopets but for dragons) so heres one of my Skydancer dergs anthro'd :) Her name is Naama

i have no clue why i have not drawn something like this until now

FR Fanart Stats
Have you ever wondered which FR dragons are the most popular to draw? No? Well clearly you're not a university student with looming deadlines, a severe procrastination problem and unlimited access to research grade statistics software let's dive in
Originally I was doing this to see which dragons I'd drawn the most for commissions over the years, but then I got curious generally about if the popularity of dragon breeds correlated with the amount of fanart produced. We artists are always fighting algorithms and trends, so this info may be useful to those of us looking to utilise them!
A brief intro/some disclaimers to the data:
I've only included modern breeds as they are more numerous than ancients on-site, have been around for less time (excl. Obelisks) and Excel was already protesting with what I had so I saved myself the headache. Look forward to the ancient breed sequel ahahahah :P that's a joke i'm not doing this again
For my 'tumblr popularity' data, I counted the breed of dragon of the first 100 featured in the '#flight rising art' tag. I excluded ancients and any unidentifiable breeds. Each individual dragon was counted in multi-image posts, unless if the dragon(s) in question were in a comic, series etc. in which case each unique dragon was counted once.
Assuming my personal commission stats are the least interesting to most people, but I'll give some background. I started doing comms in mid-2018, producing art at a relatively impressive volume (rip my time and motivation.) I do a lot less FR art now, but if we assume breed popularity has stayed consistent since then the only breed this should really effect are Obelisks as the newbies.
And then finally, on-site breed popularity. I used the dragon search feature on FR to identify the number of named, active dragons for each breed. Total dragons as of 27/01/24, if you were curious: 12,924,070! That's a lot of guys!!
I threw everything into percentages, then made a graph. it's got issues probably but my degree isn't in niche pixel dragon info and i was getting bored at this point
Tumblr media
I ran some stuff through statistical tests but they don't show anything remarkable that you can't see in the graph. Rstudio claimed a few more years from my lifespan for naught
Conclusions:
Skydancers and Imperials are crazy popular in all categories, but SDs are Tumblr's favourite
Obelisks and Ridgebacks do disproportionately well on Tumblr compared to their site popularity
Snappers and Bogsneaks are pretty unpopular across the board. I've never drawn either! But at least snaps are getting a bit of love on here
The popularity of Faes and Guardians on-site is not significantly reflected in fanart (excl. Guardian comms for me which is? an odd outlier??)
Mirrors and Nocturnes are not popular on Tumblr - found the latter interesting as I thought there may be lingering bias from NotN, but apparently not
Coatls, Pearlcatchers, Spirals and Tundras are pretty consistent between categories. Nothing really of note for these guys except for less people wanting me to draw spirals (good they're complicated)
I could draw a Wildclaw with my eyes closed and although that will not make me popular, it can make me money
Well that was a good use of 4 hours I'm going to write my essay now
and if you'd like to show your support for this cool art stats guy check out my main @lynxnothinks commissions are open thank you byeee

(The Roatuses may be in limbo right now, but I needed to write a warm-up with Archie to get my gears turning for the next drabble in the actual arc. So... here's a drabble that probably took place sometime in the past year)
Skydance
You’ve never understood the House of Restoration. It’s a church. They’re clowns. But they sure as hell ain’t subjugglators. Sure, on paper they’re clean––no mutants, empire-aligned––but no self-respecting purpleblood would run in a place like that. Whole city went to shit after the Reverend died, in your opinion.
You watch from across the street as a handful of children trickle out of the church, chattering amongst themselves and striding along with far too much confidence for your liking.
No lowblood should leave a church swapping friendship bracelets. Waste of a good cathedral.
You spit on the pavement to punctuate your disgust, eyes narrowing as the last of the children pour onto the street. A small girl takes up the rear, fidgeting with her oversized jacket and struggling to lay her bookbag comfortably across her shoulders. The fabric on her back seems to ripple, and your indignation swells.
No mutants my ass.
The freak’s got something under there, you’d fucking bet on it. Extra arms, or a pair of wings maybe. Whatever it is, shit’s not natural.
With a grunt, you push off of the wall you’ve been leaning on and grip the handle of the machete at your belt.
Shithole city needs cleaning up, yesterday. You’re light on your feet as you stride forward, energized by the impending hunt.
You step off the curb.
Your feet do not touch ground.
“Y’know, chief, I’m somethin’ of a pro when it comes t’ stupid decisions,” a voice rings out behind you. “And the one you jus’ made was real damn stupid.”
Offended, you twist to face the speaker and find yourself nose to nose with the Roatus brat himself, buggy eyes shining like beacons.
“You got the wrong guy,” you snarl, tensing as you prepare to draw your weapon.
It hardly makes it out of the sheath before the other clown plants a hand over your face and a wave of vertigo sends your head spinning like a top. The street blurs into a smear of color at the same instant that a rush of roaring wind explodes in your ears.
In less time than it takes you to blink, both you and your assailant have travelled from the city’s street to its skyline, hovering so high you can barely make out the bodies bustling on the road beneath you.
Your stomach drops like a stone.
“S’prolly in your best interest that I don’t lose my head up here, yeah?” The twerp emphasizes his point by tapping a middle finger against his temple, his eyes still shining with the use of his powers. “‘Cording to my pops, these things don’t work so good when I’m dead.”
A shuddering breath is all that escapes your lips. You’ve never been one to fear heights before now, but it’s hard to stay calm with your feet hanging hundreds of feet above the ground, nothing beneath you but empty air.
“S’matter, tough guy?” The Roatus kid grins, leaning back and crossing his arms behind his head. “Sounded like you were gonna clear some things up for me back there.”
“You’re crazy.”
He simply laughs in response, leaning back further to complete a revolution. Once his stomach is parallel to the planet, he stops and pretends to prop his head on his hands, kicking his feet behind him like a lovestruck child.
“I ain’t done shit to you,” you grit, fighting not to look down.
“No?”
“No!”
“Wasn’t you, then? S’been some other clown starin’ down our kids for the past two days?”
Your expression falls.
“It’s always the tough guys that flounder most when you catch ‘em out, y’ever notice that?” Roatus cocks his head at you, flicking open a small pocket knife and twirling it in his hand.
The wind whistles around you. You shiver slightly, buffeted by the cold, and try to keep your breathing even. It’s hard to tell whether the tightness in your chest is more from altitude or fear.
“Then again,” the other clown muses, “tough might be a bit generous.”
For the first time since you laid eyes on him, Roatus drops his smile, and your heart creeps into your throat. He presses the knife against your jaw, forcing you to crane your head back.
“You gotta be a special kind of coward to target children.”
Another gust of wind sweeps by, somehow colder than the first. You can barely hear his next question over its howling, even as he leans in to place his lips beside your ear.
“We teach a lot about embracin’ death here. D’you want the knife or the drop to do it?”

I'm thinking of maybe doing some re-imaginings of some dragon breeds just like how I did a re-imagining of the deities, that might be a fun way to stoke my art brain back up! Making a little poll with some of my faves/ones I might have an idea for, but of course feel free to suggest as well!

I decided to draw one of my skydancers today and used an upscaled sprite for reference. Less than 5 minutes in I realized how freaky they actually look. Like their heads are way longer than I thought they were. Their skulls are weird especially on the forehead. Their necks are even weirder because they go from big to small to big again. They only have 3 claws on each limb, I thought they have 4. They're more muscular and dinosaur like than dainty and graceful. No wonder no one, not even FR artists, draws Fiona on model

I finally finished a drawing of my dragon, Radio! It’s my first time drawing flaunt and it didn’t make me wanna rip my hair out as much as I thought it would. The hat is a simplified version of the one from the skin, Apiarist’s Dream.
Lore ramblings under the cut
Despite growing up surrounded by a particularly brutal group of wildclaws, Radio is a timid pacifist. He prefers flowers and gardening to other dragons and didn’t have many friends growing up. His best friend was his older sister, Vex, until she mysteriously disappeared one stormy night. Even though she was a high achiever and naturally good at combat, she was never arrogant and defended Radio at every turn. Everyone was sure she was fine, but he didn’t think she would leave without a word under normal circumstances. So he departed on a quest to find her and along the way he was joined by a gaoler searching for a similarly disappeared dragon, a strangely docile shade fragment and a skydancer with unclear motivations.

REBLOG MY ART. I LIKE REBLOGS. I EAT THEM NOM NOM.
Design notes under the cut! :D
The first of many fr! designs, we have Eclair! An aberration turned skydancer Eclair is a little bit freaky, he’s got three eyes and no feelers. He can also eat meat lol. I knew I had to make him light flight, liking relics is literally in the description. He currently lives on the border of ice and arcane, in the parfaedia!
breed notes : I think that skydancers need more bird like traits, so I changed up the feet and tail to resemble a birds, I think that those tweaks make them a little more fun! Also aberrations are so fun to draw bc I just go wild.

🍑 and 🍉 for the ask game!
🍑Show off an expensive regening project
hmmm, if we're talking regening and not just gen1 gening, i definitely have a few! the most iconic one i have is Singularity, i think.
she started off as basic/basic/basic, and i went ham to get her all gem genes and a user accent. i think she still looks so snazzy to this day

🍉Favorite dragon breed to draw
i admittedly don't do a ton of art anymore, but i loved drawing skydancers! i'm a big fan of their curly little head feathers/whiskers.

Hi I am back with more Flight Rising art!!
I spent way too long on this and honestly a lot more effort than I feel like I should have but you know what? That doesn't matter, this was a gigantic learning experience in and of itself as well as likely the most proud I've ever been with a FR drawing so.
Here you go >-<
Tumblr media
This is @/ARCTAL0N on Flight Rising's dragon Cynar!
As you can tell I had loads of fun with the metal and jewelry. I'm actually surprised I didn't get stuck on the pose for a while because I keep choosing Skydancers and then regretting it lmaoo
Then when I finished the metal, everything else looked flat and lazy in comparison, so I ended up going all out on like everything. I still feel like the mist, or smoke, or whatever that is could have been a lot better, but I think that's a lesson for another day because I barely learned how to make metal look good.
I still think the head feathers don't look feathery enough but that's okay, at least they don't look flat.
ANYWAY enough of my rambling, enjoy!!

Drabble: The Warrior’s Guild
Dragons in this story: - Crisis - Loki - Technically the rest of these too
Characters in this story are Anthro
Crisis walked up to the top of the hill outside the Hewn City, observing the large fields around them as he did. It was at the edge of the clan territory, watching over the Emperor’s Wake in the distance. It was a warm afternoon, and the breeze coming in from the Sea of a Thousand Currents was nice and cooling in the sun. Crisis wasn’t wearing his armor today, but rather a brown cotton jacket, nothing underneath. His chest scars were on full display, both the battle scars, and the surgical ones. He wasn’t alone either, the clan’s warriors all following him up there. He stopped at the top, his mane flowing in the wind. “This is where I shall plant the foundations of our new purpose.” He spoke to his clanmates. The Shade that once had tried and failed to claim him was flowing along his wings and neck. He drew his sword, plunging it into the soil. “From this day forward, we shall not only pursue justice, but also aim to raise the future warriors of these lands. Teach them to be better than the warmongering warriors of the past!” The clan cheered to his declaration, the warriors all raising their fists in support. He took a deep breath, pulling the blade up again. He pulled a seed from a pouch, dropping it into the hole. “Let this tree be our symbol. A sign of unity, and of home.” He closed the hole with his tail. “Now lend me your magic, and give the seed what it needs to grow.” Every warrior put their hands on the ground, channeling their powers into it. Seconds later, a cherry blossom tree sprouted up from the soil, the trunk growing thick and solid, branches unfurling and going into bloom. Crisis turned around, facing the tree. “It is done. Call the Construction Crew. This shall be the centerpiece of the Guild Hall, and the Dojo.”
Crisis was sitting under the Cherry Blossom Tree in the atrium garden of the Clan Hall, meditating. A year had passed since the founding of the guild, and they had taken in quite a few aspiring dragons hoping to become warriors. He sensed someone walk in, remaining in his pose as his eyes remained closed. “Ah, Loki.” He spoke. “Settling in well, I hope?” The young skydancer had recently been taken into the dojo. He had been found wandering the lands aimlessly, picking fights needlessly. The metallic obsidian skydancer stopped before him. He didn’t respond. Crisis sighed. “Troubled, are we?” He had a concerned tone. “This is a Warrior’s Dojo, is it not?” Loki asked. His tone was rather impatient. “That is true.” Crisis opened his eyes now. The radiant gold iris was surrounded by a black sclera, tiny tendrils of Shade making them almost seem like a sun. His gaze shifted to the skydancer before him. Loki shook his head. “Then why don’t I get any sword practice?” He crossed his arms. “No duels or anything. Just lessons about meditation, gardening, medicine?!” “Tell me.” Crisis stood up. He was looming over the Skydancer quite a bit. “What does it mean to be a warrior to you?” “It means to fight with superior skill and might!” Loki bragged. “To win at all costs!” Crisis sighed. “Then show me this skill.” Loki gleamed at this. Didn’t have to ask him twice. He reached for his blade, drawing it. The sound of metal clashing with metal rang out, once. Loki’s blade went soaring through the air, landing behind Crisis, who was sheathing his own blade again. Loki was stunned, knocked on his back and with a cut across his left cheek. “W-what?! I didn’t even see that!” “Because you lack discipline.” Crisis stretched. “Your form is sloppy, your resolve weak. You lack focus, and you absolutely lack understanding.” He knocked the tree with his tail, catching the single twig that came falling down. “To be a warrior is more than just about fighting. It’s about protecting life.” He offered the twig to Loki. Loki blinked, a bit unsure. “B-but...” “You wish to be a warrior?” Crisis remained calm. “Then be prepared to learn the way of the warrior, the way my guild is willing to teach it.” The skydancer took the twig, studying it. “Plant that where you see it fit to be. Nurture it. Let it grow.” Crisis explained. “A warrior who cannot nurture life, should not be allowed to take one either.” Loki nodded, listening now. “But, where.” “Wherever you see fit.” Crisis had a tendril of Shade recover Loki’s blade. “Most plant theirs where they will eventually call home, so they have something familiar to return to.” Loki sheathed his blade too, drying the blood off his cheek. “I. Understand.” He bowed, before heading out. “Thank you, Master Crisis.” Crisis settled back down, starting to meditate again. He could sense the sapling get planted not far from the guild hall, and he knew he had made the right choice. Because just a few years later, it would grow to be a great tree, and Loki would become a formidable and honorable warrior within the guild.
