Something to Point out to Owl House Fans
The series wasn’t just cancelled because of gay, like I don’t doubt that was an aspect that made them want to but the thing that really put in the nail in the coffin is that it was a story driven serial show.
HEAR ME OUT
You can see a pattern in the shows Disney greenlit before and after the Owl House a shift that shows Disney sees no value in serial story driven animated series.
BEFORE we had Gravity Falls, Star vs, Big Hero 6, Rapunzels Tangeled Adventure, Ducktales, Amphibia and they were all advertised fairly heavily and all serial story driven works.
AFTER we got Big City Greens, Ghost and Molly McGee, and Hamster & Gretel, and these were the ones really pushed even when Amphibia and Owl House were airing, these are all episodic and comedy/slice of life series.
Its not hard to see that Disney does not see value in shows they can’t just place whenever and can’t advertise easily. And we can see some hints of this shift in the prior shows.
- Big Hero 6 tried to shift to a more episodic show in its last season
- Rapunzel’s team pitched a spin off based on a fan favorite character and wouldn’t require as much work to develop compared to a new series but they said no.
- Ducktales was also cancelled early as the series was intended to have 4 seasons one centering on each kid, this was kept on the down low but voice actors have let it slip that it was cancelled leading to the rushed third season.
- The treatment of Amphibia’s finales where Disney seemed to just want to get it over with.
- Finally the bane of my existence the Chibiverse. Were you aware that this art style originated in Big Hero 6? Cause it did and was only used for it at the start until Disney saw value in these shorts then expanded to anything they had the rights to, including shows they cancelled or disregarded including the Owl House, meaning they see value in the IP but not the actual show.
You also have to remember that the Owl House was an expensive show cause of it’s animation, like again the series following have much simpler animation they do flex now and then but it’s kinda obvious its cheaper.
So to sum it up The Owl House had
- a Larger budget
- Gay stuff that had to be censored in certain countries
- I believe no hard end area, like I know it had an end goal but not like Amphibia going going I need 3 seasons (not that it’d matter looking at Ducktales)
- And the company sees little value in serial story telling and is pushing for easier to promote and schedule episodic series.
And we should be upset cause its NOT just Disney, every outlet seems to undervalue serial story telling in animation now when there was a push for it just a few years ago, when an IP as safe as TMNT couldn’t get passed two seasons that should tell you something about the state of animation and media. So yes be mad about the cancelation but also be mad for all the other shows around it.
