Man arrested over threatening social media post against Bhim Army chief
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's silence on this incident shows that he is patronising crime in Uttar Pradesh, said the Dalit leader.
AMETHI: A man has been arrested in connection with a threatening post on social media against Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Azad who was shot at by unidentified assailants two days ago, police said on Friday.
A bullet grazed Azad’s abdomen when unidentified assailants opened fire at his car in Saharanpur district’s Deoband on Wednesday. The car used in the attack has been recovered while the Bhim Army chief was discharged from hospital on Thursday.
In a statement on Friday, Amethi’s Superintendent of Police Elamaran G said that taking cognisance of the death threats to Azad on the Facebook page ‘Kshatriya of Amethi’, the police on Thursday registered a case under section 506 of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
Vimlesh Singh (30) was arrested on Thursday in connection with the post.
Prima facie, Singh was not found to be involved in the attack on Azad, but preventive action was taken to maintain peace and order, the police statement said. Advance legal action will be taken if any new fact comes to light during the investigation in the case, it said.
Six days ago, a post on the Facebook page claimed that Azad would be killed by the Thakurs of Amethi in broad daylight.
On Thursday, another post on the same page said that Aazad has been shot in the waist, but “next time he will not survive”. It also warned of a massive agitation if any innocent Rajput is implicated in the attack against the Bhim Army chief.
Talking to reporters after being discharged from Saharanpur District Hospital on Thursday, Chandra Shekhar Azad accused the Uttar Pradesh chief minister of turning a blind eye towards incidents of crime in the state.
“Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s silence on this incident shows that he is patronising crime in Uttar Pradesh,” he alleged.

Samajwadi MLA Thrashes BJP Leader's Husband In Police Station
According to Samajwadi Party MLA Rakesh Pratap Singh, Deepak Singh arrived at the police station and verbally abused him while he was sitting on a protest there.
Amethi: A police station in Uttar Pradesh played host to a brazen beatdown of a BJP leader's husband on Wednesday, with policemen struggling to overpower his attackers, including an MLA of the opposition Samajwadi Party.
Samajwadi Party legislator Rakesh Pratap Singh assaulted Deepak Singh, the husband of Rashmi Singh, a BJP municipal election candidate, inside the Gauriganj Kotwali police station in Amethi district, a video recorded by a witness showed.
The incident took place in front of dozens of policemen who struggled to keep Rakesh Pratap Singh and his supporters off Deepak Singh.
According to the Samajwadi Party leader, Deepak Singh arrived at the police station and verbally abused him while he was sitting on a protest there. This made him lose his temper, he said.
Rakesh Pratap Singh said he had been on protest because Deepak Singh and his supporters had assaulted some of his supporters, but the police had not taken any action.
In the midst of the protest, Deepak Singh arrived at the Gauriganj Kotwali police station and was heard loudly abusing the Samajwadi Party legislator and his supporters.
A senior police officer said the situation suddenly got out of hand and the police had little time to react when the two political opponents came face-to-face out of the blue.
The issue has now been resolved, and legal action will be taken against both individuals, with cases registered against them, he said.
