Dazai Holiday Week Day 5

Emergency Heating
Dazai, Atsushi and Akutagawa are on holidays for the winter. Following a power outage, which shut down the heating system as well, they’re forced to use other ways of keeping themselves warm.
Mostly the fireplace and, well, Atsushi.
“Uh, guys!”
“What is it?”
“Well — uh, I can’t get it to work?”
Silence. Then:
“What do you mean, you can’t get it to work?” Akutagawa asked.
“I mean, I can’t get it to work,” Atsushi snapped back. “I think it’s broken.”
“Broken, what—” Akutagawa moved closer, illuminating the place with his phone’s light. “What did you do?”
“Excuse me?”
“It worked perfectly well for almost a week, and then you get your hands on it and it breaks.”
“You’ve got some nerve—”
There is a knock on the door, and they turn to look back at Dazai, standing in the doorway. “Why are you fighting, and why isn’t the electricity back yet?”
“It’s not working,” Atsushi told him. “I keep turning it on and off, and trying to turn the lights on, but...” He grimaced, before sending Akutagawa a glare: “And I’m not the one who broke it!”
Dazai tried to turn the light on as well, with little success. The shook him head, still flicking the switch up and down. “Well, I guess we will have to do without lights until we figure show to get it fixed.”
“Yeah.” Atsushi nodded. “We’ve got our phones, right? As long as they have battery, we can use them.”
“There is a flashlight in the kitchen.” Akutagawa sniffed. “We can use that too.” Then, he shivered, and sniffed again, tugging at his sweater’s collar.
The soft click and clack of the switch stopped. “The heating is electric,” Dazai declared.
"No wonder it’s so fucking cold.”
Atsushi elbowed him.
They left the cabinet, and went back to the house living room. Atsushi passed Akutagawa his scarf, which he quickly wrapped around himself.
“So, now what?”
“Maybe we should call the owner?” Atsushi suggested, eyebrows drawing together. His eyes glinted in the bright light of their phones. “She would know how to fix it.”
“Weeell,” Dazai started, making a face. “We won’t be getting our deposit back if we do that—”
“We are not getting the deposit back whether we call her or not,” Akutagawa cut. “We abandoned that idea yesterday morning when you set fire to our breakfast.” He stood suddenly. “I’ll call her.”
He covered his nose with Atsushi’s scarf and put his coat on. “Outside has better phone reception. I’ll be back. Eventually.”
“Tell her I say hi!” Dazai said, almost cheerfully. Once Akutagawa was gone, he turned back to Atsushi. “To be fair, that flame was really impressive.”
“You left a burn mark on the kitchen ceiling.”
“Exactly.”
Atsushi let out a resigned sigh. “If you say so” He stood as well. “I'll go looking for that flashlight. I see better in the dark than you do.”
He disappeared towards the kitchen. Dazai shuddered, and wrapped his arms around himself. It was the middle of winter, in a mountain village, and a quick look at the window showed him a darkening sky.
It was, in Akutagawa’s own words, fucking cold.
A few minutes later, a light, larger than the one from his phone, shone in the living room. “I found two flashlights — any news from the owner?”
“Nope, Ryuu is still outside!”
“He better not catch a cold.” He handed one of the flashlights to Dazai. “I found two,” he said again, and Dazai took it from him. His fingers brushed against Atsushi’s.
“Atsushi, you —” He put the flashlight on the table, and grabbed Atsushi’s now free hand, squeezing it tight, eyes wide and shining. “You’re so warm!”
“What — well, you’re not!” He tried to free his hand from Dazai’s grasp.
“Let me use your hand! It feels so good!”
“Please don’t say it like that!”
“What are you doing?”
They froze, head turning to Akutagawa, who had just come back in. There were wet tracks on the floor and he dusted some melting snow off his coat.
Then, he shrugged, turning his phone’s light back on. “She told me there was a town wide power outage.”
“Told you I didn’t break the electricity!”
With a sigh, Akutagawa nodded. “No, Atsushi did not, in fact, break the electricity.” Ignoring the other’s victorious smile, he went on: “The power won’t be back until at least tomorrow morning, but it might happen again next week. It happens regularly during this season. All the other houses in the area have gas heating.”
“That explains the low price. She could’ve told us.”
“Well, she didn’t.” He hurriedly took the coat and scarf, the wet clothes not keeping him as warm as it should. “She also said we could use the fireplace.”
They turned, as one, towards the corner of the room, where the fireplace was. The hearth was unobstructed and there were still soot marks from the last time it was used. Beside it was a small pile of fire logs.
“I have a lighter,” Akutagawa added. “It’s in my backpack.”
“You have a lighter?” Atsushi raised an eyebrow. “What for? You don’t smoke—”
“It's in case I ever feel compelled to commit arson.”
Choosing not to acknowledge that remark, Atsushi smiled and clapped his hands together. “Great! We could also move the couch a bit closer, that way we will be both warm, and comfortable!” He picked up a log. “Ryuunosuke, could you get that lighter please?”
“Sure.”
While Akutagawa was upstairs getting his lighter, and hopefully not committing arson, Dazai helped Atsushi move the couch. By the time they were done, Akutagawa had come back with the lighter, and was busy putting the wood on fire.
“And it’s done,” he announced. He brought his hands closer to the fire, feeling its warmth starting to spread. “It might take a few minutes for it to really take but once it does, we will be fine.”
Dazai pulled the blanket off the couch and spread it open. “Time for a cuddle up!”
“Do we really have to?”
“Come on, Ryuu, we’ll warmer!” He beckoned him to come over, and Akutagawa rolled his eyes, though he complied. “Besides, we don’t want you getting sick,” he went on, “you’re sensitive.”
“I’m not sensitive,” he protested, sitting by him. “I just get sick easily.”
“Right, right.” Dazai made a small but strangely enthusiastic movement with his hands. “Move over a bit, Atsushi gets to be in the middle!”
“Why would I be in the middle?”
“Because you’re warm,” Dazai reminded him. “You’re the only one of us who never gets cold feet at night! We need you in the middle.”
“Here I thought the two of you just liked shoving your cold feet against my legs for fun.” He still took the spot assigned by Dazai.
The blanket covered the three of them. Along with the warmth of the fire, the temperate was perfect, and they quickly settled into a comfortable silence, leaning against one another.
“It’s not so bad, don’t you think?” Dazai remarked.
“I still hope the power comes back tomorrow.” Atsushi wiggled a bit. “If we do this every night until the end of the holiday, you guys are going to end up crushing me.”
“I don’t care.” Akutagawa pushed himself closer. “You’re warm. Like a furnace.”
“Seriously?” He sighed. “Between that and the fire thing, sometimes I wonder which one of your is the worst.”
“It’s Dazai.”
“It’s Ryuu.”
“Why am I even dating you.”
Dazai laughed, resting his head on Atsushi’s shoulder. “Because we’re adorable.”
“You’ll be even more adorable when you get your cold feet off my leg!”
“Never.”
