It wasn't a greatly kept secret that Emperor Nero blamed all of the Christians for the Great Fire of Rome - amongst many more other things - and for that every secret, very 'accidental' meeting between him and Isabelle was even more dangerous. Not only because she was coming from an influential, rich family and Matthew was from a significantly poorer one, on top of everything - he was a gentile. And an orphan, as of two years ago. He knew, deep down in his soul, that what they were doing was futile and soon, maybe any day now, she would come to their secret meeting place and say that she was engaged to someone powerful, someone who could give her the life she deserved. For now, Matthew was just glad that day was not today. "I brought you something," the young man greeted, instead of a proper 'Shalom', like he knew it was the custom to say.
