Founded by King Kalavarnadish (did I spell that right?), the city of Lop Buri has a history that goes back over 1,000 years. Despite small town charm and a stunning countryside, there seems to be very little in the way of tourism- most come as part of a day trip from Bangkok to feed monkeys at temple ruins or catch the sunflower bloom. We stopped on our way up to Chiang Mai, and our "half a day of sightseeing" became a day and night and another day when we discovered the train was full and there are apparently no buses going north. It was worth losing a day off of our itinerary though, as Lop Buri turned out to be one cool little city. The sunflowers were out of season, but we went anyway and got to watch the military doing parachute training. (I'm sure there is a technical term for that...) and walked around the beautiful and totally underrated "Peacock Temple", a temple just outside town that, like it's nickname suggests, is overrun with peacocks.
