#ai is a great tool if you want to make a mass marketable thing that will offend the least amount of people and say nothing of interest

I rarely post personal stuff on here but irl I'm a writer whose work covers tech and AI quite a bit and with the WGA strike ongoing, I really want to stress that the reason Hollywood execs and higher-ups think they can just replace writers with chatgpt or have someone come and edit AI generated text is because they already think writing is that easy.
these people look at their shows, movies, etc as marketable (re, profitable) content so all they are watching for is "okay this show performed badly" and "this movie performed well" and I can promise you in a boardroom the quality, the time and effort that went into the actual writing is NEVER discussed as a contributing factor when it comes to the difference between those two things.
That's also the reason tools like chatgpt seem like magic to these people, because they've devalued the act of creation and everything that goes into making something that resonates with its audience, so naturally something that can scrape the entire digital world and spit something out that falls in line with what you asked seems like a wizard's spell, because they ALREADY think of writing as an afterthought, something where they just go "I need a show that appeals to the 16-24 age range" and writers can just fill in the blanks and they won't have to PAY PEOPLE for that.
There's a vast difference between art and content, and if you want to see more of the former, you should be furious they're trying to replace writers with what is essentially a programmable template generator. Pay your writers.

For what it's worth, I'm not going to purge my blog or move to another platform. That would accomplish nothing and truthfully I'm not that worried for the integrity of my art. Considering the volumes at which the AI tech operates, I'm barely a drop in the bucket - and a very low-market-value drop at that.
My gripes with generative machine-learning art have more to do with the basic thesis on top of which the tech is built. It is a "tool" that seeks to remove humans from the act of creation for the profit of large content-churning corporations. It solves no problems because humans do not have a problem creating and being creative, unless you see it as a problem that a human - a sometimes slow, inefficient and costly human - is involved. And while we're all having fun laughing at the apparent un-intelligence of the so-branded artificial intelligence, I think it's short-sighted to dismiss the worries that these "tools" will narrow down the job market. These tools are developed by coders and have coding-based workflows, making a job market demanding the skills to use them prospectible for only the types of people who can adopt that approach. All of that, in my mind, makes the whole concept of the thing inherently misanthropic.
So, I am disgusted that Tumblr is apparently actively seeking to partner with this tech. It's great they are giving us the tools to opt-out, but it's also clear that doing so is just a business decision. They say they're already discouraging scraping, but I honestly doubt that's them being concerned for the little guy. To sell tumblr as a data source they need to gatekeep it in order to have something to sell. But to also have an enticing product, they need to be able to promise a lot of data for the partner they choose to sell to. Masses are passive, so if people were opted out by default, that would likely mean most would stay opted out and therefore the data is a less valuable product to sell. So, make it opt-out by choice to secure a wide data pool, pay a little lipservice about how you want to empower people with the choice and hurray, you can sell your data for big bucks while also feeling good about not being as big of an ass as you could. This is maybe a bad faith reading of the situation, but I just can't trust a big tech company to not have given a full productization treatment for their data resource.
So, tastes bad and I understand everyone who wants to leave. But I guess I'll continue to stay because nowhere is better, really. I am just tired and saddened by the entire state of things, and I'll be sad if this means the pool of artists I can follow and connect with here gets once again diminished.

sorry to the anon but I couldn't figure out how to edit my answer once it was in my drafts (great website).
the question was (badly paraphrasing) shouldn't we try to preserve the livelihoods of ceramicists and weavers too? and instead of saying 'mass production already killed this industry, and it will happen to others,' try to save more art from it?
basically yes! deskilling due to industrial capitalism sucks and mass production makes commodity fetishism infinitely worse. I think it's important to preserve craft knowledge and don't think we should just cede everything to industrialization, but that feeling isn't going to shift industrial trends -- only industrial action will do that. for what it's worth, it's really annoying to hear 'just unionize!' as an artist, when many, like me, are self-employed/freelance, and without sudden mass interest in some kind of low-entry-requirement sectoral guild, are not very unionizable because we don't have workplaces in the traditional sense. but by sheer numbers a lot of the job loss to AI would be corporate-level, I think, and there's more potential for people employed by like, marvel, to actually do something significant about the use of AI, than for individual customers trying to throw their weight around by buying or boycotting. I'm happy to get proved wrong here by some targeted mass boycott campaign, but I'm not holding my breath.
on a personal level I regularly spend money on handmade ceramics, fiber arts, and original art commissions both physical and digital because I find them valuable and beautiful. but I also use my IKEA plates and print-on-demand t-shirts, functionally devaluing those crafts. no amount of hypothetical discourse shaming me for 'stealing from working craftsmen' would really change that due to the economic realities. (tangentially, I don't use AI as a stand-in for commissioned art because they are not at all interchangeable to me.)
broadly though, isn't every kind of automation 'taking a livelihood' from someone in theory? my original reply to metamatar's post was basically asking where you draw the line. digital printing is taking the work of typesetters and sign painters, canva presets are taking the work of graphic designers, slip casting is taking the work of ceramicists. yet those trades still exist, and if anything I think their creative horizons are a little wider when the drudgery of the industry is taken up by machines. I know that's paltry compensation for a vanishing job market under capitalism, but isn't it a good thing when ceramicists and weavers are free to explore their ideas and not confined to backbreaking work of making the same bowls or yards of tweed for years on end? (especially in The Good Society with robust social protection that we should all be fighting for anyway)
there can be different use cases for these things (artisanal vs mass produced) and one use doesn't mean 1:1 something is being stolen from the other. personally I'm never going to pay someone to render my likeness instead of taking a photo; the money that's being 'lost' by a realism portrait artist there is purely hypothetical. same for when people get mad about others generating AI art for fun. 'you could have paid an artist for this [generated meme in the style of hr giger]' ok but they weren't going to and you can't make them.
I think people are unthinkingly flattening all kinds of creative labour when they talk about what might happen with AI. to start with, people are often talking about the job market of the first world/imperial core/etc despite the huge amounts of creative labour in/outsourced to other countries. but wherever you want to apply AI -- I don't think boutique client-based work is ever going to vanish, because the stuff that AI can do well is limited to certain types of digital illustration and animation, and you need human, creative problem-solving for new creative work, even on industrial levels with lots of automating tools in the workflow. art directors with good sense can see that. big name editorial illustrators are going to remain big name editorial illustrators. etc. (tbh, I think even the stuff AI is 'good at' looks dogshit a lot of the time, hence my disinterest in it, but that's a personal valuation and has no economic bearing.)
I'm not saying there's nothing to worry about, especially because managers and execs are often stupid and have bad taste and want to 'incorporate AI' when it makes no fucking sense, and would gladly thin out their staff for any reason. but that is ultimately a labour problem and not an artistic one.

The robot uprising and the end of the publishing world!
New Post has been published on https://kellshaw.com/the-robot-uprising-and-the-end-of-the-publishing-world/
The robot uprising and the end of the publishing world!
I can’t remember the exact title, but there’s an episode of Doctor Who where Tom Baker’s Doctor, and Romana are discussing life on Gallifrey, their home planet. The Doctor likes painting, but Romana thinks that’s archaic, as in her mind, computers do art. And while that was science fiction in the 1970s, today we’ve got AI tools that do art, and writing!
Every author business podcast I’ve listened to recently, and a lot of book-ish social media groups, are furiously discussing the impact of modern AI tools on publishing. There’s a mix of speculation, gossip and fearmongering.
Publishers with low-effort, AI-churned out bookswill swamp the market place! No one will touch self-published books again!
Readers won’t love us writers anymore as they can walk up to a computer, enter some prompts, and receive a perfectly tailored story to their tastes and preferences.
Canny publishers will use AI to increase their output and draw readers’ attention away from my stuff!
There are arguments on both sides. A lot of this appears to be FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) – the fear that the AI assisted texts will make certain writers more productive and take the readers away from discovering other writers! I don’t think it quite works like that. Sure, I’d love it if my favorite authors were more productive, but I’ve also stopped reading a series where the latest volume loses that spark and feels ‘churned out’. And even if everyone flocks to mass-produced texts, there will still be people who prefer hand-crafted stories. Maybe it will become like craft beer—there’ll be always an audience for those who want the more interesting beverages on the side.
What makes a good story? Intriguing characters, pacing, the ability to evoke emotion, perhaps. How do you bottle this and create a reliable, reproducible formula for making engaging stories consistently? People have been to figure this out for years. There’s so many courses out there that tell writers about how to write unputdownable stories, or what the best formulas. I’ve found some stuff useful (structuring and pacing techniques) and others less so.
There’s also been heartwarming stories of people with disabilities who can now express themselves better using AI technology. People with language issues or Long COVID brain fog can now complete stories with AI assistance. This is how I’d like it to be used. I’ve got some issues myself, which makes it hard for me to engage in social media. I have trouble writing random social media posts about blah life stuff without wanting to sit and think deeply about out it for ages, but if I bothered, I could go to the ChatGPT and have it write my social updates for me!
I haven’t mucked around with AI yet. Actually, I tell a lie—I use souped-up grammar checker Pro-Writing Aid to clear up my text. I’m a messy first drafter with lots of dropped words, speling errors that are fixed down the pipeline. I use some of its suggestions, but not all. Lately it’s got this AI feature that rephrases sentences. Some of it sounds better, some of it’s bland. Mostly I ignore it. But the tool is there as an option. Anyway, more options are good.
At this stage, I’m not going to engage AI (apart from PWA’s grammar/reporting checks). I’m still working on my craft, trying to capture that magic of making a great story, or at least, improve of what I’ve done in the past. For example, when I wrote Final Night, it was the best thing I’d written and completed, and now I’m going to improve on that with the next book. When I think I’ve gotten my craft to a certain level, I might check out AI tools more deeply, but for now it’s fingers to keyboard.

How to Ensure Your Cinematic Videos Rock Online
Online videos are an essential part of content marketing strategy. They are the most effective way to promote your business and brand, increase sales, and build trust. However, some people have difficulty creating videos that convert viewers into leads. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for creating online videos that will resonate with viewers and generate leads. Many people think that it is best to use a professional video production company to create cinematic videos. However, there are many other ways to ensure your online video rocks online without having to spend too much money on production costs.
What Does Cinematic Video Entail?
A cinematic video is a shot with a camera edited to appear as if it is a film. In the past, this type of video would cost millions of dollars to produce. Now, with the help of AI and computer graphics, it can be created for less than $1,000. Cinematic videos are often used in commercials or advertisements because they convey emotions more effectively than regular videos. They also have a sense of realism, making them more appealing. Before we start this checklist, there are a few things to clarify. First, what do we mean when we say we want our video to look more cinematic? There are some interchangeable terms we can use. Cinematic, professional, high quality, sharp, etc. The ultimate objective is to make your video look like what you'd see in a feature film in theaters. But that's a high bar we established for ourselves. How can you attain that? The fact is, there's no checklist to cross for you to do to achieve that automatically. It is a skill that you perfect with practice or experience. But it would be best if you began somewhere, and the following tips will give you a solid head start.
Tips For Producing Cinematic Movies And Videos
It is essential to follow a few tips when producing cinematic videos. The following pointers will help you produce a professional movie without any hassle:
1. Create Depth
You might be listening to the clip with a superficial depth of field is a simple method to make your video look more motion picture promptly. That's right, also! It assists, mainly because it's a very efficient, faster way to include depth in your shot. Take a still photo from among your favored motion pictures. You'll more likely see a shot with a foreground, a happy medium, and a history. Somewhere in between, your interest is drawn to the centerpiece's point. That allows you to look at a particular factor while submerged in another world. Producing depth indicates concentrating on one point, et cetera is out of focus, developing a natural 3D feeling. Adjust Your Aperture As Long As Possible That will enable you to create an outstanding prime focus while creating a more considerable background for everything behind you. It also suggests you do not have to stress as much about whether the history is sidetracking since it's out of focus or otherwise. Yet beware: the more significant you open up the photo, the more challenging it is to keep the focus on the point you desire! Use Smoke Any shot will have depth unless you're shooting against a flat wall. You won't notice if there are various other objects behind the scenes. Don't you have any props? That's not a problem. Do you know how to increase the depth? Smoke! The smoke adds depth! Or artificial smoke or fog. This strategy is used in Hollywood movies, just in a different form. It's also one of the various reasons you see so many characters smoking in movies. Place Something In The Way Another great pointer is to put something before the lens, just a little. It is among the reasons over-the-shoulder shooting is a favored technique of coverage. It offers you a review of where your character is, but it likewise develops an easy foreground that includes depth to your shot. You can achieve the same impact by placing something else near the lens. If you are shooting outdoors, that can be any object in your home or a tree branch. As long as it's not disruptive, it possibly doesn't take much to develop the impression of deepness. Move It Around Around when taking a shot with a lot of depth, you will get parallax. Parallax is when all the elements of the shot move at different speeds. If you have something in front of the lens, you must move the camera if you relocate your cam. Use vertical lines in your shot. What is indicated by vertical lines? Trees, structures, streetlights, and anything else have a vertical, direct form. Besides, vertical lines are the simplest means to show that you're. Suppose you're moving from side to side. Combining these tips for more depth will sell your video at higher quality and more expensive!
2. The Best Light
Let's pause briefly for a moment. The illumination area is so substantial that we can't do it justice in a quick introduction. Instead, we'll offer some quick solutions that can assist you in getting better top-quality shots with any camera you use. Capturing With A-Level Account Shooting with a level profile mutes practically every little thing in the camera's eye, offering the sensor a better chance to record your scene's best dynamic series. Dynamic variety is the minimum and maximum amount of luminance your cam can capture. We say that wide variety dramatically affects your shot's motion picture appearance. Some cameras can handle a considerable range simultaneously, while others can only record a limited at any offered time. There's a reason higher-budget cameras have a much more detailed, vibrant variety. Relying on the video camera, you have accessibility to several level profiles. S-Log, C-Log, and Cinestyle are a couple that might appear familiar. But whatever you have readily at your disposal, the objective is to offer you much more editing versatility. That's all you can technically do to impact the dynamic series of your electronic camera. The rest is to customize the scene to optimize your electronic shooting camera. And that has much more to do with the style and design of the light you're working with. Natural Lighting We encourage you to use the best, brightest, most desirable light you can get access to for this trip. And it's free! It's the sun. Try to ensure that the exposure of your scene and the exposure of the light on your subject's face are comparable. If you don't, you'll get a crazy shape or a blurred background. You're likely to encounter new trouble if you shoot outdoors harsh, unwanted shadows. There are several ways to address this trouble; however, your objective needs to be to soften the light by diffusing it, resulting in our next idea. You can place the items before an open home window and utilize the inbound light to brighten their faces when shooting inside. Reflectors Reflectors will help you diffuse the light. Using some fabric or a white sheet is a terrific do-it-yourself choice. If you have a 5-in-1 reflector, you have at your disposal an excellent, portable option for diffusing light on your talent. It is significant in the final result of your shoot as it affects how your cam star searches. If you desire a wonderful halo of light around your item, you can shoot them with their back to the sunlight and then bounce the light back onto their face. You do not require an expensive reflector either white paper, a white sheet, or anything light and reflective can do the job. Even if your camera's dynamic variety isn't that impressive, you can create a great backlight without compromising your subject's expression. With this simple backlighting trick, you can add a crazy amount of production value to your scene with minimal effort or money. Usage Nature To Your Benefit If you have no tools to control your light, an additional alternative is to wait on the best time of day and let nature work for you. The light is most all-natural and spreads uniformly throughout your subject at this time. It has a gorgeous gold glow! Please wait for an overcast day to ensure that the clouds soften the all-natural sunshine and make it gorgeous, or wait for the gold hour (right after daybreak or before sunset). Some videos have counted nearly specifically on capturing the golden hour for many years. It is among the most cost-effective ways (even the pros still use it) to get great shots!
3. Aspect Ratio
This tip is a faster one to implement compared to the previous ones. By altering the element proportion, you can trick your target market into believing your shots look more cinematic. Traditional DSLR footage typically has a facet proportion of 16:9, which, when you simplify it to a minuscule fraction, you get a proportion aspect of 1:1.78. If you change the aspect proportion even by a negligible margin, claim to 1:1.85 or 1:2.35, your eyes will immediately see the video differently. Upright video footage instantly states a great deal regarding the shot (especially since this kind of video does not belong in the cinema)! Even if you were to shoot your DSLR footage in the same format as your vertical mobile phone footage, you would certainly have the same sensation as those shots due to the shape. Fortunately, using various methods, you can rapidly attain a cinematic aspect ratio (as well as the sensation that includes it). Add a cropping impact to the top and also the bottom of yours. Adjust the cropping the feel that comes with it). First, shoot your video in a more film-friendly aspect ratio (this relies on the electronic camera you're shooting). Nonetheless, you set about it, and this simple tweak can make a noticeable difference to your video footage and the general cinematic fee of your video clip.
4. Color Adjustment
Shade adjustment is a crucial part of this puzzle. You knew this factor was coming. The image you took is shaped right into the final product regarding light and shade. Here comes the challenging component color is a matter of subjective opinion. Remember that every circumstance is different because every video attempts to communicate a slightly different sensation, tone, or feeling. However, we'll point you in the correct direction so you can accomplish the extra approved "traditional movie theater appearance" with your color modification. You're attempting to attain three things when providing your video with a cinematic look. Contrast Separate your sights (also known as "pop"). If you're recording individuals, complexion. If you shot your video footage with a color account (as recommended earlier), there are a few points you can do to bring out the shades. Utilize Your Waveform Device One of the most crucial things is bringing as much comparison into the image as feasible without shedding info. A helpful device for this is the waveform tool, which allows you to highlight your clip's lightest and darkest areas. Anything over 100 on the waveform is pure white as well as unrecognizable. The lower area 0 is pure black. As you make changes to your clip, the waveform will expand. You can look at enhancing the comparison after you make the changes while still maintaining the info! The objective is to have the waveform load the chart yet not go past the leading or drop below 0. Use The Lumetri Color Panel One of the easiest methods to get started with color correction in Premiere Pro is to use the Basics section of the Lumetri Shade panel. To change your clip's light and dark areas, utilize Direct exposure and comparison to make fundamental changes. Please be careful not to overdo it because you can adjust using the White, Highlights, Shadows, and Blacks sliders. If you intend to cut off the darker parts of your clip without influencing the lighter areas too much, you can use the sliders for shadows and blacks to achieve the wanted impact. If you shoot in a level profile, you can include life in your video footage by adding some saturation. Changing the white balance can give your colors much more character and realism. Lastly, you can use the Color Saturation Contour to increase or pull back details shades to accomplish your preferred look. Some things can ruin the look of a movie faster than when human characters look inhuman! However, you may encounter skin tone problems if you overdo the colors. We recommend familiarizing yourself with the HSL secondary range to isolate your skin tones and adjust them separately if you want to push color correction even further. It's important to remember that the extent to which you can enhance your footage in processing depends entirely on how you originally shot it. The closer you get to your in-camera look, the happier you'll be in the long run (and the less time you'll have to edit)!
5. It's All An Illusion
Video making is comparable. Unless you're watching a documentary, the characters aren't real, the locations sometimes don't exist, and if you look behind the scenes, you'll see lights and equipment everywhere that destroy the illusion. Since that's what a video is, a magical trick. So the ultimate goal in all of this is that you don't remind your audience that they're watching a video. It's an all-inclusive category. Many technical aspects can be included here, such as: Shoot at 24 frames per second and choose a shutter speed twice the frame rate (so your audience sees your image as they experience life through their own eyes). Other points are pretty obvious, such as: Make sure there is no boom in the picture. Make sure the props are appropriate for the scene's time. Avoid sneezing noises behind the scenes in the audio. Some props take a little more time and practice to get right: Please ensure the sound is clean (otherwise, your audience will immediately know it's an amateur production). Edit the footage to look professional (that would take a whole class). But other things aren't often considered, like making sure your audience believes the story you're narrating. How many student videos have you seen where a kid plays the mob boss? That immediately ruins the illusion. Even if the lighting, camera work, and acting are excellent, the audience won't believe it.

With this simple backlighting trick, you can add a crazy amount of production value to your scene with minimal effort or money. cinematic short videos To Your Benefit If you have no tools to control your light, an additional alternative is to wait on the best time of day and let nature work for you.
Big Data Analytics and its usage in contemporary world
Well according to the definition of Google the big Data Analytics can be defined as:  “Big data analytics is the often complex process of examining large and varied data sets, or big data, to uncover information -- such as hidden patterns, unknown correlations, market trends, and customer preferences -- that can help organizations make informed business decisions.”
Now the question arises is why Big Data Analytics. Before understanding this simple question we should think about what it does?
Here are the 05 main functions of big data analytics:
📷
Reviews are excellent data resources worth taking advantage of. Reviews roll in often, so you should watch out for them on a regular basis, depending on your product or service, they’re likely to be on Google, the App Store, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and so on.
Predictive Analysis: Until recently, consumer data analytics was a slower process and therefore it was used to analyze the past. Today, there are several tools that allow you to use the data in real-time. So, instead of only looking backward, executives are using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning software to predict what certain customers will want in the future.
If Predictive Analysis is about improving future customer experience by using consumer data, Real-Time Product Feedback works… instantly.
So far, we’ve been talking about ways you can analyze your own company’s data to boost your business results. However, it’s also important to keep your eyes open and look at what your competitors are doing.
Net promoter Score: The Net Promoter Score (NPS) is a very common and popular method for conducting customer experience analysis and measure customer satisfaction. As the name suggests, it’s a numerical score, and it is calculated by asking customers how likely they are to recommend your brand or product to a friend/colleague on a scale from 1 to 10. (1 is the lowest score and 10 is the highest and most positive.)
Well after understanding the needs and necessity of the Big Data Analytics I will come to my point of making the graduate engineers molded into it and give then a classic opportunity to nourish with the help of this specific technology. Taking the example of the electronics industry here are the core advantages of data analytics:
Predict Change in Demand: Data analytics can be applied to help a company predict and respond to changes in demand. Some demand changes are cyclical with others influenced by environmental factors. Data analytics can help bring in and connect many disparate elements to make prediction possible in a way that it wasn’t previously. In using data analytics to build a predictive model, a company can anticipate fluctuations in demand and adjust available supply accordingly.
Reduce Cost: In a competitive environment, the supply chain is constantly pressed to become more cost-effective. In using data analytics, an organization can continually compare real-time pricing and availability from suppliers, incorporating the history of order accuracy, transportation and logistics costs, and many additional variables. Utilizing analytical insights, electronic component purchasing officers can be confident that they are always receiving the highest-quality product available at the best price.
Increase Efficiency: A supply chain using integrated data analytics tools becomes transparent, from start to finish. Duplicated efforts are eliminated, as are manual processes, as automation is key to data modeling. The electronic component supply chain becomes more efficient and, as visibility is increased all along the process, opportunities for improvements are more easily spotted, and the focus can turn to implement better business strategies.
Flexibility: Data analysis can help a company predict changes in an operational environment, and with some foresight, it can result in a more flexible organization that rapidly responds to environmental changes. Flexibility is critical to adapting to a changing environment, and rapid, appropriate responses are key to remaining competitive.
Scalability: A company that has harnessed the power of big data can use that information to pursue and support a growth strategy. Typical growth strategies include growing a customer base, expanding into new markets, or offering new products. Data analysis can promote growth by providing information that is vital to growth strategies including customer preferences, regulatory differences, competition analysis, and more.
Each technology is boon for humanity but its upon us that how we invest that technology into the welfare of human beings. Some examples are as follows that how can Big Data Analytics can be useful in generating the income equality in India. The engineers. the data scientists can come over it and make our country a better place to the liver in. here are the ways that how it can be done with a variety of masses and benefit them.
Providing Density and Location Coordinates to Fishermen: Nadadur also cited another use case where analytics helped in providing information related to the density of fish along with the location coordinates to the fisherman. This could be a big booster to the lives of fishermen, increasing their efficiency, and in turn, profits.
Predictive Analytics for Farming: In 2016 Microsoft collaborated with International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and Andhra Pradesh government, to develop a new mobile application for farmers. The idea behind developing the Sowing App and providing Personalized Village Advisory Dashboard was to provide powerful cloud-based predictive analytics so that farmer felt empowered with information and insights which were required to make farming decisions.
Reducing Dropout Rate at Schools with Microsoft: In a bid to improve Andhra Pradesh’s education ecosystem, Microsoft is working with the state Government on a machine learning-based model to analyze and predict dropouts and take preventive action. Andhra Pradesh government uses Azure Machine learning to predict which students are likely to drop out of school across its 10,000 schools. Officials have created more than 6,00,000 predictions using Azure Machine Learning, revolutionizing how Indian local governments increase student retention.
Conclusion:
So, concluding with the motivation of graduates who are confused to go how and where can drag themselves to the usefulness of Big Data Analytics for the benefits of personal being as well as the society.
Analytics has become an attractive career destination for MBA students. The field offers exciting and challenging work that leverages business as well as technical knowledge in a largely merit-based environment. The financial rewards are great and growth opportunities aplenty.
There was a time when businesses looking for analytic professionals would primarily focus on candidates with a master’s degree in quantitative fields such as maths, Statistics, Economics, and Computer Science. PhDs were in great demand too. A couple of things have happened in the last few years.
Firstly, the analytic tools have become more user-friendly. A lot of the latest tools are GUI-based. Instead of learning a coding language one now needs to just master the graphical user interface of the tool, which is a lot easier.
Secondly, experience has taught businesses that effective analytics exists only in the context of a business and a business problem. Those who have strong technical and quantitative skills but a poor understanding of the application of analytics in a business context are likely to be weak performers. Even experienced statisticians sometimes get caught up in the technique and accuracy of their predictive models and forget to pay sufficient attention to common sense and business logic.
With the above-mentioned issues of points thoroughly discussed is complete as of now. Give it a thought and I am sure you can conquer the aim you aspire for.

Winner Spotlight: “Re:scam” by Netsafe & DDB New Zealand
September 26, 2019
2019 APAC Effie Awards 2 Gold - IT/Telco & Brand Experience - Services
Tumblr media
Netsafe is an independent, non-profit online safety organisation. It provides online safety support, expertise and education to people in New Zealand. It’s been around for more than 20 years, founded in 1998 to help New Zealand’s internet users stay safe online.
After noticing the growing influence of technology in their respective areas, the New Zealand Police, Ministry of Education and several not-for-profits teamed up with telecommunication organisations and IT industry partners to create an independent body focussed on online safety. Together they created the Internet Safety Group (rebranded Netsafe in 2008).
In 2018, Netsafe wanted to curb the alarming increase in phishing attacks - fraudulent attempts to obtain personal information through hoax or scam emails. Between 2015 and 2018, phishing attacks had grown by 65% worldwide, and just in New Zealand, $257m per year was being lost to cyber crime - and that’s just the reported amount. The shame and humility victims feel after falling prey to an internet scam means most attacks go unreported.
So Netsafe partnered with DDB New Zealand to create the “Re:scam” initiative, a crew of AI chatbots designed to respond directly to scammers’ tactics. Since launch, the bots have saved thousands from falling victim.
“Re:scam” earned 11 Effies – including seven Gold – in the 2018 Effie Awards New Zealand and 2019 APAC Effie Awards competitions, in categories including IT/Telco, Data Driven, Limited Budget, and Experiential.
Below, Rupert Price, Chief Strategy Officer at DDB New Zealand, explains how it worked.
Effie: What were your objectives for “Re:scam”?
RP: The objectives for the “Re:scam” campaign were relatively straightforward.
First, make people aware of the dangers of internet phishing scams. It was important to educate New Zealanders on the telltale signs of email scams and also to reassure them that they weren’t alone. By demonstrating that this was a widespread problem, we could show New Zealanders there was no shame or humility in being the target of an email scammer – it happens to all of us. This would be measured by earned media coverage, as we had no budget to buy media exposure.
Second, give internet users a tool to fight back against phishing scams. Not only did we want to reduce the number of people falling prey to such scams, we also wanted to discourage the scammers in the first place. By showing the scammers that people were on to them, although outside of legal jurisdiction, we wanted to show them people were prepared to fight back. This would be measured by the level of direct engagement with the campaign.
Third, make people aware of Netsafe’s role in keeping Kiwis safe from harm online. We wanted New Zealanders to know there was an organization protecting their interests online and to show them that they had somewhere to turn if they had any concerns about online safety. Knowing you are not alone is powerful encouragement when fighting back against cyber crime. This would be measured by visits and enquiries to the Netsafe website.
Effie: What was the strategic insight that drove the campaign?
RP: Obviously email scammers rely on the art of disguise, exploiting people’s inherent sense of trust through pretending to be someone they’re not. To succeed, this scheme relies on most people to be trusting, which most New Zealanders generally are.
Our big insight was, of course, that this ‘bond of trust’ has to work both ways. Not only does the email recipient have to believe they are dealing with a credible sender, but the scammer also has to believe they are dealing with a gullable and willing recipient for the scam to work.
This breakthrough insight gave us our big idea. We were going to beat the email scammers at their own game. If they were going to impersonate people with an ‘offer too good to be true’ then we would impersonate a willing and gullible victim to waste their time - without wasting ours.
Effie: What was your big idea? How did you bring the idea to life?
RP: An AI-powered chatbot that imitated human victims, wasting scammers’ time and protecting real people from harm. Re:scam was an AI-based initiative that gave people a tool to fight back against scammers. When someone received a phishing email, they could forward it to [email protected]. Our program then picked up the conversation and replied to the scammer based on the email. Replies were designed to lead scammers on for as long as possible with exchanges that wasted limitless hours of their time.
Effie: If scammers were busy talking to a robot, they weren’t talking to real people.
RP: This was a good first step, but at its heart Re:scam was a faceless entity, not built to be shared en masse. Because we had no media budget, if we wanted to give ourselves a chance of breaking into culture and driving mass awareness, we needed to give the bot some personality. Or rather, multiple personalities.
We introduced AI cat-phishing to the world with a deliberate blend of human and computer-generated creativity.
We engaged IBM’s AI ‘Watson’ to help analyse the content of messages and formulate responses, and created a digital video as the centre-piece of our communications. This mirrored the multiple personalities of Re:scam by showing different C.G. faces and voices flickering in and out.
To show that anyone could be a victim of an email scam, Re:scam was created to mimic various types of personalities. With deliberate spelling mistakes and malapropisms, each “character” had their own backstory and unique way of talking.
From the retiree asking “The Illuminati” if they had a bingo night he could join (and who sent his bank details through One. Number. At. A. Time), to the single mother who was excited to win big money, each was programmed to be as frustrating and time-consuming as possible, while remaining human enough to avoid detection. Sometimes our bots would accuse the scammers themselves of being bots.
Every time they got a response, they now had to second guess themselves.
youtube
Effie: How did you measure the effectiveness of the effort? Were there any surprises in the results?
RP: Being a campaign designed to directly encourage consumer interaction (for the campaign to work, it required people to do something), primary measurement was relatively simple. The campaign would succeed or fail based on the number of people who forwarded on their phishing emails and let the Re:scam AI bots to do their thing.
The thing that surprised us most was the sheer volume of responses we received. 210,000 scam emails were forwarded onto us over the campaign period. Most of these were from New Zealand but many were from overseas also. The big learning for us was that an entirely earned and owned channel campaign in today’s media landscape is a truly global campaign, if the idea is strong enough.
The secondary measurement of the campaign, the objective of which was to raise awareness of the issue, showed the earned media coverage for the campaign was everwhere. Through New Zealand news media outlets Re:scam reached an audience of 4m+ across all networks, (that’s nearly the entire population of NZ, by the way). However, the campaign’s global reach was in excess of $300m+ through media outlets as diverse as The BBC, The Guardian, El Pais and CNN.
Effie: What was the greatest challenge you faced when creating this campaign, and how did you approach that challenge?
RP: The greatest challenge we faced with the Re:scam campaign is that we had no media budget. As Netsafe is a non-profit NGO, its primary channel of communication is though the news media. It relies on the ‘newsworthiness’ of the issues to get picked up in the news media and carried to the audience.
Of course, this is a high-risk strategy. There was no guarantee the news media would be intrigued by our initiative, and depending on the news cycle of the day, other stories might take precedent. The news media creates interest, which is then amplified on social media. Since pickup from news channels is vital, we must always push ourselves to come up with ideas that create interest beyond the issue itself. In the case of Re:scam, we knew internet scamming and phishing tactics was a topic of public interest, but we also knew that our unique and innovative AI bot solution would be of equivalent news interest.
Of course, we also had to build the AI Bot, which was no mean feat itself!
Effie: What lessons can marketers take away from your work?
RP:
Don’t be afraid to try something that has never been done - someone has to be first, so why not you?
If it doesn’t exist, be prepared to build it yourself.
Don’t let a lack of a budget hold you back - great ideas will always prevail if there’s enough will and conviction behind them.
Make sure your campaign or initiative ‘adds value’ to your audience in some way. If it’s not through utility or enlightenment, at the very least entertain them along the way.

Why do America’s generations keep getting dumber?
America is the global symbol of individual liberty and opportunity. Defined by capitalism and democracy, the very concepts that have made the U.S. the hallmark in innovative thinking and societal development. With arguably the best ‘system’ in the world able to work at great scale, American renegades have been the frontrunners in many aspects of society many countries wish they could compete with. Walt Disney, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, all American icons for creative thinking and execution. Creative, intelligent men that any company would love to have on their team if they could convince them to come. They’ve accomplished things that some would believe to be impossible, and not only that, they all dropped out of college. The education system failed them.
The current American educational system was first introduced in the 1910′s during the industrial era to create a scaled up version of a youth knowledge assembly line. Children are crammed into large classrooms and are taught general knowledge to enter the next level of education. The strict regimen of be quiet, listen, and regurgitate what you have heard onto a standardized exam to get a letter grade has been used for over a century. This practice is nowhere near teaching a child to think and solve problems. Tests do not work. They do not represent any more than words on a paper. Example, the Chinese Box Experiment. In short, a Chinese professor inserts a test of different Mandarin characters that a robot on the other side of the door must answer. The robot identified every character correctly and returned the paper. The Professor says “Wow, this pupil understands Mandarin very well!”. She is unaware the answers came from a machine programmed by humans. The robot does not actually understand what is going on, it is simply responding with what it’s been told to do. Understanding is using memory to create predictions. However, this is exactly how school teaches children in America. They program children to respond to an input with a correct output, and those that compute such information correctly, are deemed the brightest. If we are programming children to act as robots, robots will win every time, bar none. The only way to fundamentally beat a robot is to be more human. Humans have creativity, emotional intelligence, morals, historical and societal awareness. Schools are essentially building kids like robots in an assembly line. They are writing code in our brains on how to think, act, and behave in many situations. The smartest natural child can be nurtured in such an environment to become average.
The most beautiful aspect of a child is its sense of curiosity and creativity. Left to its own, many will fantasize about spaceships and rockets and trains. They will dance on couches, spill their parent’s coffee on the rug, They ask naive questions about complex issues. I was lucky enough as a child as my father would make me understand how any toy or tool worked when I used it. I was made to inquire about the world around me. How does a car engine work? What could make it better? Why do planes not fall from the sky? I was then sent to day school and would be told to shut up and listen to the teacher, because he is smarter than you. What does it mean to be smart then? To know more information and algorithms downloaded into the hippocampus? Memory is not intelligence. Intelligence and consciousness are manifested in the neocortex. The part of the brain that operates high level thought. Children in American society are suppressed and told to remember things to graduate. After a certain point of indoctrinated thinking, children lose their sense of curiosity and are more focused on execution then the process of learning and solving the problem itself. The most commonly asked question in American schools is “Will this be on the test next week?”.
So how can we make this better? This epidemic starts on the very system of education itself. The end goal of school is to obtain a degree, a rough representation of what college taught you, or maybe you were just wily enough to cheat (which is highly incentivized in the ends justify the means environment.). School’s are not obligated to innovate. Colleges are businesses. They force 18 year old children to take on 200 thousand dollar debt decisions. They don't need all that money. The books that cost hundreds of dollars for students, cost 6$ to make. NO INDUSTRY IN THE WORLD HAS A MONOPOLY THAT BOASTS SUCH GREAT PROFIT MARGINS. Colleges have young generations on a string with the rhetoric that a degree is worth such money. Millions of kids cry joyfully over getting into a school, just to give them money that is taken from loans to enslave them once they get out with a degree. College is enslavement. It is a monopolistic business. It is a shame to see such an important factor to human development being exploited for profit. They pay zero taxes on the profits they make. They teach general knowledge in a lecture style. Is that worth it? Why do kids want this? Why do parents make them do this? Because they did it when they were kids? We are in a new age.
Fast forward over a century later, the digital age. Children have smartphones, smartphones with all the information they need. Why sit in a room listening to someone lecture when you can just look something up? Children are put in classrooms that are part of a school, that are part of a district, that is part of a school board. These scaled up versions of education pump out millions of children with a broad range of general knowledge, or at least that is the intent. Now most of these kids go to college, work a 9-5 job, and start a family and the cycle goes on with their children. That is not fulfillment, that is not happiness for most. The average school tuition has increased by more than 200% while the average salary of college graduates has plateaued since the start of mass schooling. We live in an era of economies of “unscale”. With artificial intelligence and cloud computing, vertically integrated corporations with huge factories and inventory cannot compete with lean, agile startups that rent cloud storage on Amazon Web Services, outsource manufacturing to Chinese factories, and utilize open source Machine Learning algorithms instead of spending great capital to build it all individually. This gives power to creative, niche startups that can effectively run a business from their basement. Think back to the 1990′s. The internet had just gone mainstream, thousands of employees quit their jobs to create internet companies during the Dot-Com Boom before it crashed. They would plan their IPO before even incorporating, this new technology was a home run in their eyes. How does this relate to education? The rapid evolution of technology can be attributed to new platforms. Telecommunications created a global platform for information to be spread from Boston to Australia in an instant, the internet has revolutionized virtually every industry. My generation is growing up in the advent of the AI and cloud computing platform. Essentially, the innovation of big tech platforms should equate to radically different education. However, because school systems have no incentive to change and make less profit, they are still preparing kids for an industrial era to be interchangeable pieces working for large corporations rather than agile startups and small to medium companies.
Artificial Intelligence will radically change education. Harvard, Stanford, and a few other large brand schools have noticed this trend and created online courses already that use machine learning engines to tailor a course to a students understanding. AI can use big data to understand how a pupil learns, what he/she is struggling in, and create a report on their level of thought that is a perfect representation on what they can do, rather than a vague degree. Many companies such as Microsoft and Google are receptive to this and an increasing number of developers enter the software field with no degrees. Because there is no system that could exemplify a student’s intelligence in the past, an expensive degree was the next best thing and college became a booming business but quite an enslaving process for the children utilizing it. AI can guide a student while virtual classrooms and teachers can connect to children across the globe for real organic conversation. Now, the physical classroom is very important for social development and should still be used to an extent. Perhaps we Americans should look towards Finland, the country with the best ranked educational system in the world. Their primary and secondary schools are incredibly different. School days are 3 hours long, there is no homework, and there are no private schools. The philosophy is that kids should be emancipated from the institutions and be left to be kids and develop intuitiveness organically through real world social experiences. There are no private schools so that rich families send their kids to public schools and those parents make sure the school is up to par with what they can afford. This forces schools nationwide to keep a standard that is universal, much unlike the U.S. with many inner city public schools without internet while capitalistic private and public district schools spend money on football field renovations.
To create a more productive generation of students, we must “unscale” education, remove private schools, reduce length of school hours, ban or at least regulate student loan firms, set a price ceiling on all college tuitions and utilize the platform of Artificial Intelligence to create a market of one for all students starting from Kindergarten to beyond college. Hiring more teachers and building would effectively make the problem worse. Teachers can be the greatest minds on the planet, but under such a restrictive there is little hope to save a whole generation. Khan Academy has implemented an unscaled online system, leading the way for more personalized education programs. There is little chance this can happen unless this is derived from the Federal Government, which is famously bureaucratic and slow to act especially with education. Changes are needed. This will make children more excited to learn, ask questions and solve the great global issues that are long overdue to be solved. Kids will strengthen critical thinking skills and experience freedom of thought that will create a wave of further technological development and accelerate American education to new heights.

Publishers with low-effort, AI-churned out books will swamp the market place!

The Keys to Successful Digital Business Transformation
The Keys to Successful Digital Business Transformation
Ever since the pandemic hit, there has been much hype around digital transformation in business. With little chance to prepare, how are you going to adopt the massive shift to digital? Even worse, what if you have no IT background at all? No worries! I have prepared a few tips that will help your business to create a clear path towards digital transformation.
What is digital transformation?
Digital transformation is the integration of smart technologies, processes and competencies across every business operation.
According to AIMultiple, nearly 90% of all companies have already adopted a digital-focus business strategy or plan to do so. As today’s customers are more demanding than ever, businesses must embrace new technologies to deliver a seamless and satisfying customer experience. In other words, digital transformation is driven by customers. Common practices include business model transformation, organizational mindsets reposition, market expansion and more.

Why should you consider digital transformation?
Prefer doing business in a traditional way? Don't rush into decisions without considering the wider context! Below are 5 huge benefits of digitizing your company:
1. Improve Efficiency
By leveraging the power of innovative technologies and helpful tools, you can easily maximize the availability of productive assets and directly drive business growth. PTC and CoporateLeaders surveyed 128 executives, discovering that the most prominent advantage of digital transformation is the dramatic improvement in efficiency.
2. Cut Expenses
Apart from saving effort, digitizing your business is also an ideal way to save money. You will never know how much you have wasted on maintaining old, legacy systems and products unless you look closely into the annual report. For example, the cost of saving your information on a cloud-based system is 50% lower than using traditional physical infrastructure management. This explains why undergoing a digital transformation is a great ally to cut unnecessary expenses and keep the budget under control.
3. More Profits
Navigating the shift to digital can also help your business to generate leads, increase sales and improve revenue. Other than improving productivity and saving costs, digital transformation opens up new revenue opportunities as companies will be able to offer quicker services through an unexplored channel. According to SAP, 80% of companies which have undergone digital transformation projects reported stronger profitability growth than those have not.
4. Increase Customer Satisfaction
Digital transformation redefines the customer journey. With digitalization, you can gain new insights into your customers’ buying behaviors and preferences by analyzing the detailed user data collected by the computers. You can then develop customer-centric marketing campaigns, building customer trust and long-term relationships. With reference to McKinsey, digital transformation can generate 20% to 30% increase in customer satisfaction.
5. Earn New Competitive Edge
In today’s fast-changing environment, whoever fails to update the technology and keep pace with the competition will eventually lose part of their market share in the industry. To stay competitive, not only should you do it right, you should also do it better than the others. In 2020, McKinsey found that companies with faster product launches, better customer experiences, and reduced development costs usually had more investments in new technology than their peers.
How to digitally transform your business?
1. Web Development
Normally speaking, digital transformation starts with web development. As the public face to the world, a website is the foundation of trust, both internally and externally. You need to make sure your company website meets existing and future business objectives instead of just looking pretty, or else, your web will not be able to align with the company's goal in the long term.
Don’t know how to revamp your website strategically? You can consider joining one of the most comprehensive Full Stack Web Development Course offered by Preface. Under the supervision of an experienced programming instructor, you can gain an in-depth understanding of both front-end (HTML & CSS) and backend (Python in Django) development with business use cases happening in Silicon Valley, the leading technology hub in the world!
2. Python Adoption
Python plays an important role in digital transformation since it is the most common coding language used in automating different tasks. Moreover, with Python, you can efficiently process and analyze the big data to drive valuable business insights.
If you want to learn Python that is not limited to basic use, The Data Science & A.I. with Python course is exactly what you need. The curriculum will guide you through data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence with a focus on practical business applications. The professional instructor will also teach you how to leverage the power of Python to derive value from data for better business decisions and outcome forecasts.

Former Apple design director launches mass-timber housing company "to bring productisation to the built environment"
Apple's former design director BJ Segal has recently established a mass-timber housing company named Juno. In this exclusive interview, he explains how it aims to design housing like it is a product.
Architect Segal, who worked for 19 years designing Apple stores – most recently as senior design director of real estate and development – believes that Juno can create housing that dispels people's preconceptions about modular buildings.
"If we're going to bring productisation to the built environment for people to live in, that's counter to most people's idea of what an ideal place to live in is," he told Dezeen.
"Typically, architecture is bespoke, bespoke, bespoke – one project to another, there's even a disparity or taboo about repetition within the culture of architecture."
"So we have to design something that is meant to be repeated and that is accepted as higher quality – almost aspirational."
Above: former Apple design director BJ Segal recently launched Juno. Top: it is designing mass-timber housing in the US
Segal believes that designing using modular elements will allow Juno to take advantage of design efficiencies and economies of scale while being able to continuously improve the product.
And if the homes are high quality enough, people will not be concerned that they are not unique.
"Taking it from product design, no one cares that your iPhone is the same as the next person's iPhone," he told Dezeen.
"If the quality is so much better, then you're okay that you have the same phone as somebody else," he continued.
Housing built from 33 components
Working with co-founder Jonathan Scherr and New York-based Ennead Architects, Segal has developed a modular system of around 33 components that can be assembled to create various different housing blocks.
These components are being built in a network of factories across the US, before being delivered, flat-pack, to the site.
The first Juno project is on-site in Texas
"So for us, it comes down to three things," he said. "Design a project that's meant to be built over and over again – design out of components. Number two, set up that third party supply chain such that it's a decentralised supply chain."
"Then number three, provide a set of instructions, a set of tools for people assembling the project."
First Juno project on-site in Texas
Juno has recently broken ground on its first project, a five-storey 24-unit residential block in Austin, and larger projects with more than 100 units are working their way through the planning systems in Seattle and Denver.
The first developments are being delivered at "market rate", but Segal believes that as more developments are built, the savings from mass production will allow them to reduce the cost of the housing.
"We are starting at a goal of providing a much higher quality product to the market at a faster timeframe than conventional – we're seeing great gains in speed already," he said.
"And we're delivering it right now at market rate, just right out the gate at market rate. And then over time, that cost will continue to go down."
Housing will be mass timber above podium level
All of the housing will be built from mass-timber above a podium that will be adapted to each of the project's sites.
This will not be cross-laminated timber (CLT) – the most common type of mass timber – and Juno is not revealing details of the material at the moment, although it will be manufactured in the US.
The housing will be made from 33 components
"We are not using CLT," said Segal. "We are actually using another variety that we think is slightly better than cross-laminated timber for a number of reasons."
"The one that we've picked is not as widely available as cross-laminated timber," he continued. "And as a result, there's a slight advantage to being able to use it that we've discovered. We feel that we're actually using a lot less material."
Read the edited interview with Segal below:
Tom Ravenscroft: Can you tell me a little about how Juno began?
BJ Segal: Before working on Juno, I spend about 19 years working on the Apple retail store programme. Back in 1999 is when I kind of started working on projects at a small interdisciplinary design firm here in San Francisco. We were actually doing tradeshow work for Apple, the Macworld Expo stuff, and we got the opportunity to think about how Apple would bring their brand directly to the consumer.
So we spent a bunch of time coming up with the first concepts for the Apple stores. Long story short, I did that for about eight years, and then in 2009, got asked to work properly directly as head of AI innovations and standards. Then, within two years, as the head of design for Apple on their projects across the world.
Four major things that came out of that. First how to design a product that people really get emotionally connected to – that was a big thing at Apple.
Number two, work on continuous improvement to really understand how architecture can be more like product design, and really focus on the customer – continue to improve through feedback and innovation, not just using one-off projects.
The third is Apple really challenged us to think about the way we deliver the project more like the way they deliver products through a kind of owner-furnished direct source supply chain model.
And that actually spurred a lot of investigation as to how to translate that work from a product into this industry, which is really kind of not focused on that.
So that really was a big, big focus.
And then the last one was really a commitment to the responsibility of the building to its environment, I think that was, you know, in the second half of my time at Apple that became a big deal.
Tom Ravenscroft: How did this experience inform Juno?
BJ Segal: Those four lessons were kind of primed in my head, as I was deciding to take off after 19 years of working on Apple. When I met John, the other co-founder, we realised that the customer, the end-user, wasn't always a consideration in developer housing.
So we set out to think, can we design a much better, higher quality product, a product that really focuses on the environment, and addresses the needs of the users and matches our own values.
So the question ended up being how do you design a product that's higher quality, but not deliver it at price points that people can't afford, because typically higher quality, higher environmental impact comes at a price premium.
For us, the kind of the generative idea was delivering that higher quality product at a more approachable and achievable, more accessible price point for folks.
And that's where we started really diving into technologies, processes, you know, things that we could do. What can we do in the background, to really make it possible to deliver it that way. The customers that live there don't really mind or care about how you got there, but they do care about what it costs and if they can afford it.
So all of the business models that we've created in the background is there to serve this better quality product.
Tom Ravenscroft: Can you give me more detail about the business model?
BJ Segal: If we're going to bring productisation to the built environment for people to live in, that's very kind of counter to most people's idea of what an ideal place to live in.
Typically, architecture is bespoke, bespoke, bespoke – one project to another, there's even a disparity or taboo about repetition within the culture of architecture. So we have to design something that is meant to be repeated and that is accepted as higher quality – almost aspirational.
So taking it from product design, no one cares that your iPhone is the same as the next person's iPhone. If the quality is so much better, then you're okay that you have the same phone as somebody else.
So you've got to design something that relates to people's values, feels higher quality, higher craftsmanship, it relates to the things that people would aspire to, but it can't be priced out.
We're looking at middle-income, market-rate housing. This is for people who have everyday jobs. And so how do you deliver that kind of aspirational product at a price point. And so the first thing that we really did was decided to look to see what were the smallest number of parts that we could design to actually keep the skew count low, keep the quality really high.
And then take those very small number of parts to build a supply chain around delivering those parts to our project sites. So that we could put these things together.
And those parts are made such that they can live independent of each other, they can be second or third sourced if need be, we can always chase the best technology, the best vendor who's doing the best work, we can learn from their techniques.
We then take those parts, make them very predictable, make them relate the same way every time they're using the project, and then allow a lot of flexibility in creating many, many different buildings on different sites.
Then make it such that the assembly of the project on the site is really like a factory assembly line, but it's on a construction site. So you've really simplified down, potentially, the assembly of the project because much of it is done ahead of time.
So for us, it comes down to three things. Design a project that's meant to be built over and over again – design out of components. Number two, set up that third-party supply chain such that it's a decentralised supply chain.
Then number three, provide a set of instructions, a set of tools for people assembling the project.
Tom Ravenscroft: And how does timber fit into that?
BJ Segal: Timber is really quite important for us. We started out by wanting to take advantage of new technologies and be more manufactured than constructed. We also wanted low labour, high machine, high technology in their manufacturing.
And finally, what does it contribute to the sustainability of the project? What we discovered very quickly, as we were doing our design work, was that we wanted to focus on mass timber.
In the United States, it's a slightly new conversation. It's a much older conversation in Europe.
But you know, you look around you do your research, you learn from everybody that's done something in the past. And so for us, mass timber was coming online in the United States  – the building code was changing.
For us, mass timber was key to unlocking a lot of benefits. It's a material that has many advantages. We found one that we think is highly advantageous – low waste, highly manufacturable, highly strike-strong in its strength compared to other mass timber.
Tom Ravenscroft: Is it cross-laminated timber that you'll be using?
BJ Segal: Well, no, we are not using CLT. We are actually using another variety that we think is slightly better than cross-laminated timber for a number of reasons. The one that we've picked, is not as widely available as cross-laminated timber. And as a result, there's a slight advantage to being able to use it that we've discovered. We feel that we're actually using a lot less material.
I can't say what it is right now as we want to keep our advantage. But I can say it's a mass timber manufactured in the US.
Tom Ravenscroft: So you are expecting to get much of the benefits associated with CLT, plus some additional ones?
BJ Segal: Yes, and it's worth mentioning that by using mass timber and the way that we are using it, we are finding a very significant advantage over other materials that can build tall projects like concrete or steel. As a result, we're building much lighter buildings. The mass timber that we're using is coming from a responsibly and responsible forestry practice environment and as a result, it actually is being considered a negative contribution to carbon from a biogenic resource.
As a result, we are finding ourselves in an embodied carbon situation that is quite unique, actually. And quite advantageous.
Tom Ravenscroft: So all of what you've described sounds similar to what others have strived to achieve. What makes you think that you've got the secret sauce to do what others have failed to?
BJ Segal: The process of trying to productize homebuilding has taken place since the 1940s. This is not a new thing. And a lot of architects get into this and try to figure out what's the recipe.
And a lot of folks have come up with some really great ideas that just haven't worked. There were a lot of things that we learned and watched. Our system, first and foremost, tries to learn from the lessons of the past.
We have only one volumetric component, which is our bathroom, everything else is panelized, flat packed, and shipped very efficiently. And some very large companies have invested in fabrication and placed a real emphasis on vertical integration – companies would buy up architecture firms, general contractors, their own factories. Asset intensity was unable to be sustained.
So, one of the things that we're really focused on is this idea of instead of being vertically integrated, we're really very focused on being vertically aligned. And that was a mission right from when we first started the company – vertical alignment with amazing partners. So we are not setting out to be everything.
In fact, we're like the orchestra conductor, we are actually bringing together people who don't typically work on these kinds of projects. And we're trying to bring this amazing resource, this amazing skill set together, great fabricators who build parts; they're kind of becoming part of this ecosystem.
So I think that is a stark difference to the way a lot of folks have approached this problem, we are ending up being very asset-light, we can be very nimble, we can follow the best technology, the best techniques, we can get competition within the supply chain, and continue to really chase the best ideas, always listen and learn and be humble that way.
Tom Ravenscroft: And is this theory being put into practice?
BJ Segal: One of the things that we'll announce next week is that we have broken ground on a first project in Austin, Texas. It's a five-storey 24-unit project. And we actually have a couple of other projects in our pipeline already under control and moving forward. Much larger, much larger projects, eight to 12-storey projects in Seattle and Denver.
And really, that's where we're going to concentrate our efforts in these kind of 100 to 300 unit projects, eight to 12 story projects.
So you are operating in the real world, not theory?
BJ Segal: We're not aspirational in that way. We are actually doing everything we're saying. And actually, everything that we're building is compliant with today's codes.
We don't have things that we're dreaming will happen. We have real projects with real general contractors, real investors, real component fabricators who have actually built the real parts for us.
We've built full-scale mock-ups of the one residential unit. We've studied all of the assembly with the installers and the fabricators we've actually used, we have a team of continual like data collection experts, so to speak, watching and learning so that we continue to feed that back into our process and get better and better.
Tom Ravenscroft: So you're happy to work within the current building system?
BJ Segal: We want to make living sustainably easy for people. We want to actually create the first network of mass timber. Kind of a net-zero carbon contribution from the embodied carbon standpoint, which is highly unique. In fact, our environmental engineers that we've been working with have told us that they've actually never seen anybody getting to this point in the embodied carbon category.
You know, our operational carbon is 20 per cent, better than the most stringent codes in the United States right now. So we are, we are leaning in, we're not there yet. We're on a journey. We're not telling people we are net-zero, because that would be silly. It's a journey. And it takes a lot of effort. Especially in housing, it's a place where there's not a lot of investment just for the sake of making statements like that.
We're trying to build in the most responsible way, in today's context. And we're trying to bring a whole network of these projects to a lot of people, and not make people change the way they live in order to be able to live in a sustainable way. We're actually going to start with today's goal and get better as we go.
Tom Ravenscroft: Then I suppose the way your system's built, if codes change, you can adapt and amend?
BJ Segal: Absolutely, it's meant to have continuous improvement components, one of the beautiful things about the components is that they're independent of each other – there's a very small number of components, maybe like 33 components that make up every part of the residential part of a project.
The podium will be very unique for each site, with a different programme, different foundation, etc. and a fairly conventional podium.
Tom Ravenscroft: And above that, you will have the modular residential housing?
BJ Segal: Yes. And really, it's meant to be where we exploded with our efficiency, and the quality of everyday life. That's really where we want to focus. When people walk through the front door of the unit, they're going to look at it, hopefully see craftsmanship, light, air, materials, the volume of space that you can't find in a developer housing – an emphasis on the everyday life, not just the list of amenities, but where people actually spend their time.
Tom Ravenscroft: So you've got big aims and ambitions for Juno?
BJ Segal: Not big aims for the sake of just big aims, but big aims for making a contribution. So we're on a trajectory with the Austin project. We are self-developing, we are the developers. The next two projects, the ones in Seattle and Denver, we're co-developing with local co-developers. Then we will continue to reach further towards other developers.
We're starting by eating your own dog food, so to speak. We're proving it to ourselves, and everybody else. And then as we grow, and as we do bigger projects, and more of them, we start reaching forward, sharing up development tasks with others. Then we start using that as a service and a platform where others can choose to help us deploy our product, really, because it is more like product design at that point where the investment of R&D, the investment of tools, and processes, which we've proven out, and we'll have a track record, we can start getting more and more interest from the development community.
And then every time we do this, you know, we get better, we learn more about what happens, we collect the data, we build more partnerships with more people. And at that point, you know, you start adding scale to the matrix and scale reduces cost, you start adding repetition of partnerships, and that comfort level helps to kind of continue to reduce the cost.
So we are starting at a goal of providing a much higher quality product to the market at a faster timeframe than conventional where we're seeing great gains in speed already.
And we're delivering it right now at market rate, just right out the gate at market rate. And then over time, that cost will continue to go down.
Tom Ravenscroft: So you're working within the real-world constraints of each project?
BJ Segal: Yes, the projects themselves are funded with conventional construction development capital. Not funded by venture capital.
Tom Ravenscroft: What do you think will be the biggest obstacle to this actually upscaling into something that is viable across the whole United States?
BJ Segal: Well, first of all, because of this decentralised supply chain, if we chose to be global, we could do that. We could build supply chains in other countries. And we could apply this thinking to other places. That is not a constraint.
We believe in focus, we have one product right now. And I think that's another area where folks have failed in the past, where they've tried to do too many things at one time.
So we have one product right now, market rate, multifamily housing. We can choose to go into other verticals; student housing, elderly, housing, hospitality, but we're really being focused right now.
I'd say there are two things that are road bumps, but not obstacles. One is time because it's different from a product company or software company, the cycle time is longer to do a project.
As a result, you have to be patient enough to allow it to get through regulatory approval processes in places like Seattle, which is very slow. It has nothing to do with how fast we work, it's to do with the city. It's just reality, right?
So time, we have to be patient enough to get it done.
I think the second thing is that some folks that are just a little less excited to be innovative, they're really a little bit more risk-averse. And so for those people in that chain, a lot of the benefits come after seeing one or two of these happen.
In order to get the full benefit of the process. You've got to demonstrate a couple of times and so that patience that I mentioned to you, we have to be patient. Not everybody wants to be an early adopter.
So that kind of scale has to come once you can demonstrate to people who want to see first and get involved second, but we've gotten so many people who have said to us, we are so excited to get on this bandwagon, but we just don't want to be first.
So that's okay, we'll find a couple of people who want to be first with us, and we'll do with them, they'll probably benefit in the long run more, because they've been part of the beginning.
