Day 11: Dressed to Impress

A/N: Here’s some Adrian x MC fluff set in between books 1 and 2. I know we all need it after today’s chapter. Also, let me know if you want to be tagged for my Lily x Kamilah fic (and any of the others!) It probably won’t be out for a little bit just because I want to take some time to do them justice.

"What's this for?" Isabel's fingers ran over the black dress's smooth fabric, it's bejeweled collar glimmering in the artificial light of the office. 

Its simple elegance was breathtaking and she knew that the price tag was probably a number she couldn't afford on her own. She looked up at Adrian with a curious expression. 

"An event later tonight," he answered, and she detected a hint of nervousness. He was becoming quite easy to read now. "It's a dinner so it's a bit more formal attire. If you don't like it there are some more upstairs that I keep on hand."

Isabel shook her head. "Are you kidding? This is gorgeous. Whatever this occasion it sounds...fancy. Did I miss it on the itinerary?" 

A brief wave of paranoia rose through her at the thought of potentially forgetting a work-related detail.

This he noticed and quickly abated. "No, it wasn't there. Sorry to make you worry, I simply forgot to mention it to you out of habit." His lips twitched sheepishly. "I guess I'm still not completely used to my assistant knowing about all this. How the city is truly run."

It didn't take long for her to put the pieces together. She let out a gasp. "Wait...is this a Clan meeting?"

Adrian raised his eyebrows in momentary surprise before a smile appeared. "Yes. That didn't take you long."

It never takes me long to figure things out," she giggled before a slight crease formed in her brows. "But, I'm not really...I'm only human. Am I even allowed?"

His rich brown eyes poured into her, and she felt like she would melt under its analytical scrutiny. But, his smile remained unwavering. "You are," he said to her surprise. "Everyone in the Clan, including myself is allowed to bring one guest--vampire or otherwise. I choose you. You have been wanting to meet them."

The notion was so surreal to her, someone of his status and opulence wanting her, a small-town girl with her head in the clouds. 

"Are you sure?" she questioned, her insecurity leaking out of her despite her best efforts to keep it contained. "I know that my meeting them is a big deal for you, for...us. Do you really think I'm ready?"

Giving her another warm smile, he stepped forward closing the gap between them. It was just the two of them so they didn't have to keep up professional appearances. "Of course I do, I wouldn't have offered if I didn't think you could handle it. You've impressed me with how fast you're learning and adjusting to all of this. And, I want to be with you, and not just behind closed doors. With that likely to be possible soon at the company end, why wait?"

Her sunshine-like grin shone on her face once more. "If you're sure it won't be a problem." Plucking the dress off of the back of the chair, Isabel paused another concern flying into her overthinking brain of hers. 

"What is it?"

"Nothing, I just, um, I'll need to touch up my appearance. If I'm going to make a good first impression, I need to dress to impress. That's what my grandmother always tells me anyway," she fretted, rambling nervously. 

Looking at her with a bemused expression, Adrian simply chuckled and produced a navy blue key card with his initials in white cursive. "You look great just the way you are. But, use this, if you're so concerned. The meeting isn't for another hour and it's just upstairs in the restaurant so you can meet me up there when you're done."

Taking it, she gave him a feather-light kiss on the cheek before heading straight for the office door. "Thank you! I'll be back down shortly."

Almost fifty minutes later, Isabel stood in front of the rooftop grill's elegant glass doors, staring at her reflection in the shiny surface. She smoothed down her hair sprayed updo that she spent way too much time perfecting and went over any wrinkle in the black fabric delicately encased on her figure. Then when all of the physical nitpicking had been done, she sighed and gave herself a silent pep talk. 

She desperately wanted things to go well. Other than Kamilah, Adrian's Clan was the closest thing he had to a family. She didn't want to mess things up. After another minute of trying not to psych herself out, she finally decided that she had prepared enough and opened the doors. 

Even though New York was experiencing a late spring heatwave, the meeting was being held indoors, most likely for if it extended past dawn. Stepping inside, she could help to gape, the inside of the restaurant being just as beautiful and magnificent as the patio outdoors. Eventually, she found the private dining room and saw Adrian busy making the final preparations. She smiled as she watched his hands-on dedication to the task. 

"So, what do you think?" she asked shyly. There was something about him that made her blissfully unnerved, giddy. 

Hearing her musical voice, he turned around and nearly stopped breathing at the sight of her. "Isabel...my god you're…" he swallowed. "You look beautiful, radiant."

Isabel smiled, knowing that she could make him just as flustered as he made her. "Well, you do have good taste. You look pretty dashing too if I don't say so myself. But, then again you always do."

"And you don't?"

A slight flush graced her cheeks. "Adrian…"

"I'm just telling the truth." That and his boyish stare did little to help the mix of warm and fuzzy feelings buzzing inside. 

Their privacy was interrupted when the clan members began to trickle in and Isabel's smile took on a professional air. One of the first to arrive was Tony, who had traded in his usual lab coat for a traditional black suit and tie. 

"I was wondering when you'd make an appearance to one of these," he told her as she gave him a brief hug. 

"Thanks. He really goes all out for this doesn't he?" she observed, her eyes traveling to where Adrian was politely conversing with someone she didn't recognize. 

She was met with a laugh. "He sure does. I think he enjoys taking care of us, and part of that is a taste of luxury. Not that most of us can't afford this on our own. From the outside, it looks like he's being pretentious but, I know that he really just focuses on it because it's a monument to the good accomplishments of his. Lord knows he needs to."

Isabel didn't need to ask about the underlying meaning to the scientist's words. She knew that once Adrian's achievements were of the much more dark kind. He didn't speak of it much but he didn't have too, the little words and body language he provided were enough. 

"I should make my rounds. I have a few dozen people to impress after all," she said, lightening the conversation once more. 

"Oh, I don't think it'll be that hard," he advised. "Some of my counterparts may be a bit more...traditional-minded but, they're all good people deep down. Adrian's fondness for humans is far from new to them. They just need some reassurance that he picks the right ones after...the somewhat recent events that transpired."

Nicole. 

She thought of the deceitful blonde now locked up in the Shadow Den. For a while, she felt nothing but hatred towards the person who almost let Adrian die. But now, she couldn't help feeling a bit of sorrow. For she too was consumed by the euphoria that type of dominant power vampires and humans alike succumbed too. 

Isabel gave him a sad smile. "Thank you, I'll be sure to keep that in mind."

With a wave, she began to float about the space, with firm handshakes and quaint small talk that usually annoyed her but not this time when it came with a sense of purpose. As she completed her last introductions, she felt Adrian's hand on her bare shoulder. 

"How are you holding up?" he inquired. 

"Fairly good. Everyone is so impressive," she replied, her eyes widening appreciatively. There was an exciting thrill she received being around inspiring professionals, especially in this industry that she had come to love. "All of these CEOs and scientists. You even have a world-renowned neurosurgeon!"

He grinned at her coyly. "Originally we divided it up so that each of us took a sector of the economy, things that make the city come to life and function. While most of our members still hold true to that, Vega's untimely end has complicated things. With what's leftover of his Clan mixed with Jax's people, that one is a bit of a wildcard now."

As everyone began finding their seats, he led her over to the long dining table and showed her to the chair closest to the large ornate one that sat at the head. "Here. A little heads up, I’m planning to have you speak at the start.”

Isabel raised her eyebrows. "I-I haven't prepared anything."

Adrian shrugged. "I know that you can come up with something. You always find the right words to say," he told her with a wink. 

She gulped nervously. "O-okay."

She could tell how much he wanted her to do this and he knew what his people would respond to well. Once everyone was seated, Adrian picked up his wine glass and used a fork to make it ping, quieting the room down. 

"Thank you, for joining me for our annual meeting," he said, addressing the glitzed and glammed faces staring back at him. "It's lovely to see you all and hear that after the chaos of last month things are settling back to normal." 

A hushed murmur could be heard throughout. 

"Now, before we begin this evening's agenda, you all have noticed that tonight I have a guest here with me. Isabel is professionally my executive assistant here at Raines' corps and personally…," he paused, making eye contact with her before continuing, "...she's someone I've come to deeply care about in a short amount of time. I know that some of you are still cautious of humans from the recent situation. So, if she wouldn't mind, I'd like her to share a few remarks to reassure you that she is completely trustworthy."

Biting her lip, Isabel pushed out her chair and stood up gracefully. Her face became warm from the pressure she found herself under as all eyes were trained on her. 

She took a deep breath and smiled, exchanging a look with Adrian who gave her an encouraging nod. 

"Thank you, Adrian. I'm extremely grateful to you all for being allowed to be a part of this and begin the process of getting to know you," she began, the nerves threatening to consume her. "I know that you're skeptical of my involvement here and becoming so involved in your world. There is a lot of animosity between our two kinds, which we've both had a hand in shaping. But, in the short time that I've known Adrian and have become aware of you and your secrets, I've come to see the nuance that many of my fellow mortals don't have the patience or courage to seek out."

Now, she was hitting her stride and the words came to her naturally. "That while you have certainly earned some of the reputations that is handed to you, it is not the full story. You have the capacity for using your power for good and history will prove that us humans definitely have blood on our hands too. I wouldn't be here if I didn't think that befriending you, using my work to help you is worth it. And I hope that I can prove that my presence and intentions here in this world and with Adrian are nothing but benevolent ones."

The last of her eloquent speech left her lips and a hum of appreciative responses gave her a satisfied feeling. Her work was far from over, now having to deliver the open promise in her dialogue. But, it was a good start and that was all she needed at the moment. 

"A brief toast," Adrian exclaimed, his demeanor overflowing with hope and pride. 

Sitting back down as the first course was being served, the main contents of the meeting could be delved into and Isobel sat back watching the entire thing and Adrian's calm, gracious leadership. 

She could really get used to this.

Safe and Sound

Here it is, my first ever Bloodbound fic, titled by my bestie @darley1101 because I suck at thinking them up. The acrid smell of smoke clung to Andrea’s clothes, assaulting her nose as she let herself into the guest suite on the forty-ninth floor of Raines Corporation. Exhausted and depleted, she dropped the hastily packed bag she carried with a sigh and headed straight for the luxurious bathroom that overlooked Central Park. She filled the claw-foot soaking tub with near scalding water as she stripped down, adding some of the lavender oil the company provided for guests before stepping in. Mindful of the phone in her hand, she slid down, closing her eyes as the soothing water engulfed her.

Being in a relationship with Adrian, to be a human in a world of vampires, Andrea always imagined that any danger she would have to face would be of the supernatural variety. Not a fire in the apartment two doors down from hers. When she smelled something burning, she brushed it off, assuming old Mrs. Pavletich in 3C forgot the cookies in her oven again. The next thing she knew, she was coughing as black smoke began to fill her apartment and the buildings fire alarm rang loudly in her ears. Ignoring every fire safety lesson she learned in elementary school, she ran to her bedroom as adrenaline rushed through her veins, shoving whatever she could get her hands on into a duffel bag, making sure she took the diamond tennis bracelet and ruby pendant Adrian had given her for their anniversary.

The news vans that had gathered to film the NYFD flashed in her mind and Andrea sat up, opening a text to Adrian. Hey, I don’t want to freak you out, but there was a fire in my building this afternoon and I’m going to be staying in the guest suite at work for a while. I’m fine, slightly smoked but otherwise ok. Just letting you know before you see it on the news. She hit send, and the dimmed screen grew darker still as a notification popped up, telling her to connect a charger. Shit… she thought, noticing the empty battery icon blinking. With swift fingers she typed another text, only getting as far as And my phone’s about to… before it went black. Rolling her eyes, she let out a frustrated groan and set the phone on the tiled floor, slumping back against the porcelain. He wouldn’t be able to get ahold of her, but at least she let him know where she was and that she was alive. Maybe she should have gone to the penthouse instead, Adrian had given her a key, but she didn’t think it was a good idea to enter a sleeping vampire’s lair unannounced. Regardless of said vampire being her boyfriend, she saw that movie, and it didn’t end well for the human.  

Minutes after the sun slipped below the horizon, she heard Adrian’s deep voice thunder through the suite as he frantically shouted her name and she turned toward the sound, finding him already standing rigidly in the bathroom doorway with sheer panic shining in his eyes. His short brown hair, normally expertly tousled was disheveled from sleep, and he still had on the charcoal pajama pants he wore to bed with a plain white t-shirt hugging his muscular chest and abs in all the right places. “Hey...” Andrea murmured, sitting up. At the sound of her voice, every tense muscle in Adrian’s body visibly relaxed as he let out the breath he was holding and he rushed toward her, kicking off his shoes while pulling his shirt over his head. Moving almost too quickly for her eyes to register, he joined her in the tub with his pants still on, sloshing water all over the floor as he gathered her in his arms and pulled her forward to straddle his lap, holding her tight to his chest. She could feel him shaking, his warm breath coming short and fast against her ear and she ran her hand up his back to the base of his skull, threading her fingers through his hair. The text was supposed to ease his mind. She knew he would be worried, but she never thought he would be… scared. “I’m okay.” She whispered reassuringly. “I’m okay, Adrian.”

“When you didn’t answer… I couldn’t get to you…” He took a deep breath and his hands slid from her back to rest on her hips as he pulled back, looking at her with his brows drawn together, his blue-grey eyes searching her brown ones. “You could’ve died, I could’ve lost you… and I… I wouldn’t have been there to…”

Seconds ticked by, and when it became clear he wasn’t going to finish his thought, she reached up and drew her thumb across his lips before brushing her knuckles against the impossibly smooth skin of his cheek. “But you didn’t. I’m right here.”

Biting his lip, his eyes squeezed shut before opening again, locking onto hers with an intensity she found both alluring and a little unsettling. “I don’t like it. Not having you with me. To not be there to protect you. Move in with me.” He stated plainly.

“Move in with you?” She chuckled lightly, thinking he’d lost his mind. Sure, she stayed at the penthouse most nights, err days… and she had a drawer in the bathroom, and one in his dresser, also half a closet of clothes… but officially moving in together had never even been mentioned. Adrian loved her, she knew that. But she also knew that love frightened him at times. “Wait, are you serious?”

The corners of his mouth curled upwards into a smile. “So serious.” He teased.

“Hmm…” Teasing him back, Andrea pursed her lips and lowered her brows. “Living in a swanky penthouse apartment with the man I love? I don’t know, I’ll have to think about it.”

Adrian’s smile grew wider and he cupped the back of her neck, pulling her into a firm kiss before resting his forehead against hers. “I take it that’s a yes?”

She smiled back, breathing out a happy sigh. “That’s a yes.”

A Complete Beginner’s Guide to Masking in Photoshop

Several years ago a friend of mine asked me to teach him how masks work in Photoshop. This is my incredibly late response.

We’ll go over the basics of what masks are, what they’re used for and how wielding them properly will take your Photoshop skills to an entirely new level.

What Is a Mask?

Layers are probably the single most important addition to Photoshop since the original version, but layer masks are a close second. I would posit that until you thoroughly understand how and why to use masks, you simply don’t understand the power of Photoshop.

The term “mask” isn’t immediately understandable to someone outside the realm of graphic design. At its simplest definition a mask is a way to apply something to a very specific portion of an image.

There are two primary types of masks: clipping masks and layer masks. These two tools are closely related in concept, but very different in application. Let’s start by discussing layers masks, which are generally what people are referring to when you hear them discuss Photoshop masking.

Layer Masks

A layer mask is something that you apply to a given layer to control the transparency of that layer. Where layer opacity controls the transparency of the entire layer at once, a mask gives you more precise controls over very specific areas. If you want the entire layer to be at 30%, you would lower the opacity, if you want just the left side of a layer to be at 30%, you would use a mask.

When you add a mask to a layer, it covers the entire thing with an invisible grayscale canvas. There are ways to see it that we’ll check out later but just know that as a general rule, applying a mask to a layer won’t cause any immediate visual differences unless you have an active selection at the time.

On this invisible canvas, you can paint white, black or any level of gray in-between. The color that you paint tells Photoshop how opaque to make the pixels at that point. White means 100% opacity and black means 0% opacity.

With this in mind, try to imagine what the mask below would do to a layer:

As you can see, if our mask was all white with the three circles shown above, we would have a completely visible layer where in all the white areas, and spots of transparency in the circles. If we apply this mask to a layer, this is the result:

Clipping Masks

Clipping masks are very similar to layer masks only they use one layer to determine the transparency of another. In this scenario, you stack two layers on top of each other with the bottom being the determining factor of the transparency of the top.

Instead of using black and white values though, clipping masks simply borrow transparency from the layers used to make them, namely the bottom layer. If the bottom layer has some areas that are opaque and some areas that are transparent, a clipping mask will apply these values to the top layer.

This one is hard to explain without an example, but becomes crystal clear when you see it in action. Let’s use the two layers shown below and say that our goal here is to cut or “clip” the wood layer to be in the shape of the letters. Notice that, at this point, the wood is the bottom layer and the text is the top layer.

To achieve the effect that we want, simply swap the position of the layers so that the wood is on the top, then go to the Layers menu at the top of your screen and select “Create Clipping Mask” (Command-Option-G). Voila, we now have the effect we were going for. Where the text layer was opaque, the wood layer is now opaque and where the text layer was transparent, the wood layer is now transparent.

There’s some really interesting functionality here. You can still position and make changes to each of the two layers independently. By dragging around the wood layer, you move the position of the texture inside the bounds of the letters while the letters themselves stay stationary.

Also, you can apply layer effects to the compilation via the bottom layer. For instance, here’s what happens if we select the text layer and add an Inner Shadow.

Clipping masks fun, functional and underrated, but the truth is that layer masks are far more common in every day use. The information above should be enough to get you off and running with clipping masks so from here on out we’ll focus purely on layer mask functionality.

How Do I Make a Layer Mask?

Now that we have a strong grasp of exactly what masks are and how the two different types of masks differ, let’s see how to create and work with a layer mask.

The first thing we need is two layers. I grabbed the two images below from photographers Adrian Durlea and Erik Soderstrom. The shack image is on the bottom and the fire is on the top.

The general idea here is to take some, not all, of the fire and apply it to the shack. The first step is to stack the two images as we see above and set the fire layer’s blending mode to Screen. This will make all of the black pixels transparent, which blends the two images together nicely.

With that one change, this is already a pretty decent image! Let’s say though that we want to only have fire near the door of the shack. To accomplish this, we’ll need to add a mask to the fire layer. Select the fire layer and click the mask icon shown in the image below.

Now, with the mask selected in the layers palette, we grab a soft, black brush and paint out the portions of the fire that we don’t want to see. As we do this, the fire begins to disappear. To bring it back, we simply paint white.

As you can see in the image below, with just a little painting, our fire is now much more centralized to the portion of the image that’s already lit up and therefore looks decently natural.

To see the actual mask, Option-Click (Alt-Click on a PC) on the little mask preview in the layers palette (Shift-click to hide the mask completely). After painting out some of our fire, this brings up the following:

Notice that we’re not just constrained to hard edges. The beauty of masks is that you can do anything you want with them as long as you can pull it off in values of gray. This means you can paint, clone, create and fill selections, copy and paste, and all kinds of other actions you perform on the main canvas.

Why Not Just Erase?

Upon first learning how to use masks, most rookies think the same thing: “I can already do all of this with the eraser tool.” Wrong! In fact, as far as I’m concerned, once you learn to mask, you should literally never pick up the eraser tool again because it tends to be so destructive.

What do I mean by destructive? Think about what happens when you use the eraser tool: it erases pixels. Mind you, it doesn’t hide them for a while until you want them back, it “destroys” the pixels. The changes that you make by deleting portions of a layer are permanent and can’t exactly be tweaked later.

This is simply a horrible way to work. With every new iteration of Photoshop, Adobe gives us more and more ways to make non-destructive edits, meaning those that don’t truly alter the original pixel data. For instance, Filters used to be a permanent and destructive change, if you blurred a layer, it was stuck that way! Now, with Smart Filters, you can always go back and adjust or even delete the blur.

This same concept gave birth to masks many years ago. With a mask, you not only have the ability to make remarkably detailed decisions about the transparency of a layer or group of layers, even better, you have the freedom to go back and refine or scrap those changes at any time. If I had erased my fire in the example above, it would be gone forever and bringing it back would involve importing the layer all over again. However, because I used a mask, all I have to do is fill that mask with white and immediately all of my fire detail returns.

To use the metaphor of an actual mask, imagine that you want to change your appearance for Halloween. You have two options: the first is to undergo plastic surgery to permanently change your face to look like that of a scary creature and the second is to wear a mask. In this scenario, the eraser tool is plastic surgery. It’s simply a bad choice when you’re not sure that you want the changes to be permanent. Go with the mask instead.

Advanced Masking Techniques

The information above is an absolute beginner’s guide to masks. Odds are, if you’ve been using Photoshop for a while, not a single piece of this was news to you. In fact, you may be thinking that masks are so incredibly simple that they barely merit conversation.

However, masking techniques go from simple to wickedly complex really fast. It’s easy enough to paint some broad strokes to erase large portions of an image, but what if you want to do something more complex? For instance, let’s say we want to take the cat below off of its white background.

Furry animals make particularly difficult masking subjects. All of that fine hair detail means making an accurate selection will be time consuming. The Magic Wand or even the Pen Tool are of no use to us here. So how do the pros start with the image above and create a mask like the one below?

Change the Channel

The good news about the cat image is that there is plenty of contrast to work with. The key to making a good mask is finding contrast and knowing how to pull it out. Here we have a fairly dark cat on a bright white background, which means all we have to do is figure out how to leverage our good fortune and convert the contrast already present into a suitable mask.

The first step in a project like this is to jump over to the Channels Palette and look for the channel with the most contrast. So in our case, we want the channel with the darkest cat and the brightest background, which turns out to be the blue channel.

Make a copy of the blue channel, select it and hit Command-L to bring up a Levels Adjustment. Darken the shadows and the midtones so that there is a crazy amount of contrast like in the image below. Be careful to no go too far with this adjustment. You’ll want to zoom in and watch the hair detail on the fringes of the fur to make sure you’re not clipping too much. It doesn’t have to be perfectly black and white at this point, some dark grays are acceptable.

At this point you encounter one of the trickiest steps of the entire process. The goal is to get as much of the cat as closest to black as you can. This is easy for the face potions and other random spots near the center, just grab a black brush and fill them in. But what about the edge of the hair?

It turns out one of the best ways to handle this task is to use a couple of unlikely candidates: the Dodge and Burn Tools. The reason these work so well is that they can accurately target certain ranges of gray extremely accurately. I set the Dodge Tool to target the highlights and the Burn Tool to target the shadows, grab a medium size soft brush and make my way around the edges of the image, burning shadows and dodging highlights until I like the level of detail that I’m seeing.

This may sound like a time-intensive task, and it can be for some images, but in truth the Dodge and Burn Tools feel like magic when you’re using them and take much of the work out. I was able to come up with a great looking silhouette in only a minute or two.

Once you’re done here, hit Command-Shift-I to inverse the channel so that the cat is white and the background is black like in the image below. Remember that, in masking, white is opaque and black is transparent.

Converting the Channel to a Mask

Now that we have a channel that accurately represents what we want from a mask, how do we convert it? There are a few ways to do this but the easiest is just to Command-click on the channel to load a selection. With a selection loaded, return to your cat layer and click the New Mask button. That’s all there is to it!

Defringing the Mask

As you can see, despite a super detailed mask, we still have some white fringing occurring around the edges. Getting rid of this can literally take hours of tedious work if you don’t know what you’re doing. For starters, we can use the fantastic new Masks Palette in conjunction with Refine Edge to make some live adjustments to our mask.

Utilizing these tools properly takes practice. I won’t cover them closely now because it would take so much time but I encourage you to dig in and play with all of the controls to get a feel for what they do. Often, you can patch up a rough edge in seconds with these sliders, but with our cat project I wasn’t really getting any results that I liked so I cancelled out this operation altogether.

Instead, I went to the Layer menu at the top of the screen and selected Matting>Color Decontaminate. This is an almost hidden command that has the ability to yield some amazing results. As you can see in the image below, it went a long way toward reducing our halo. Note that this command is actually destructive so you should always duplicate your layer before using it.

From here, the last trick I use is to look for problematic areas and actually run the clone brush over the fringes. The mask keeps everything looking nice and cloning replaces unnatural colors with those from the actual fur of the cat in other places. Compare the back and head of the cat in the image below to that above to see the improvement.

Finishing Up

From here it becomes a factor of how much time you want to spend refining your result. With complicated masks like these there is always room for improvement but you’ll find that the point of diminishing returns on your time spent becomes easier and easier to spot as your skill level improves.

The technique we just discussed is just to give you a taste of how advanced masking can become. There are a ton of different types of images to mask and therefore a million different tricks and techniques to figure out along the way which can be mixed and matched on a per-project basis. Practice makes perfect, just be bold and never become intimidated by a masking job that seems too complex. Think through the process one step at a time and find ways to pull out the detail you need.

Layers аrе рrоbаblу thе single mоѕt important addition tо Photoshop ѕinсе thе original version, but layer masks аrе a close second. I wоuld posit thаt until уоu thоrоughlу understand hоw аnd whу tо uѕе masks, уоu simply don’t understand thе power оf Photoshop.

Thе term “mask” isn’t immediately understandable tо ѕоmеоnе оutѕidе thе realm оf graphic design. At itѕ simplest definition a mask iѕ a wау tо apply ѕоmеthing tо a vеrу specific portion оf аn image.

Thеrе аrе twо primary types оf masks: clipping masks аnd layer masks. Thеѕе twо tools аrе closely related in concept, but vеrу diffеrеnt in application. Let’s start bу discussing layers masks, whiсh аrе generally whаt people аrе referring tо whеn уоu hear thеm discuss Photoshop masking. Layer Masks

A layer mask iѕ ѕоmеthing thаt уоu apply tо a givеn layer tо control thе transparency оf thаt layer. Whеrе layer opacity controls thе transparency оf thе еntirе layer аt once, a mask givеѕ уоu mоrе precise controls оvеr vеrу specific areas. If уоu wаnt thе еntirе layer tо bе аt 30%, уоu wоuld lower thе opacity, if уоu wаnt juѕt thе left ѕidе оf a layer tо bе аt 30%, уоu wоuld uѕе a mask.

Whеn уоu add a mask tо a layer, it covers thе еntirе thing with аn invisible grayscale canvas. Thеrе аrе wауѕ tо ѕее it thаt we’ll check оut lаtеr but juѕt knоw thаt аѕ a general rule, applying a mask tо a layer won’t саuѕе аnу immеdiаtе visual differences unlеѕѕ уоu hаvе аn active selection аt thе time.

On thiѕ invisible canvas, уоu саn paint white, black оr аnу level оf gray in-between. Thе color thаt уоu paint tells Photoshop hоw opaque tо make thе pixels аt thаt point. White means 100% opacity аnd black means 0% opacity.

With thiѕ in mind, trу tо imagine whаt thе mask bеlоw wоuld dо tо a layer: 

Aѕ уоu саn see, if оur mask wаѕ аll white with thе thrее circles shown above, wе wоuld hаvе a completely visible layer whеrе in аll thе white areas, аnd spots оf transparency in th�� circles. If wе apply thiѕ mask tо a layer, thiѕ iѕ thе result: 

Clipping Masks

Clipping masks аrе vеrу similar tо layer masks оnlу thеу uѕе оnе layer tо determine thе transparency оf another. In thiѕ scenario, уоu stack twо layers оn top оf еасh оthеr with thе bottom bеing thе determining factor оf thе transparency оf thе top.

Inѕtеаd оf uѕing black аnd white values though, clipping masks simply borrow transparency frоm thе layers uѕеd tо make them, nаmеlу thе bottom layer. If thе bottom layer hаѕ ѕоmе areas thаt аrе opaque аnd ѕоmе areas thаt аrе transparent, a clipping mask will apply thеѕе values tо thе top layer.

Thiѕ оnе iѕ hаrd tо explain withоut аn example, but bесоmеѕ crystal сlеаr whеn уоu ѕее it in action. Let’s uѕе thе twо layers shown bеlоw аnd ѕау thаt оur goal hеrе iѕ tо cut оr “clip” thе wood layer tо bе in thе shape оf thе letters. Notice that, аt thiѕ point, thе wood iѕ thе bottom layer аnd thе text iѕ thе top layer. 

Tо achieve thе effect thаt wе want, simply swap thе position оf thе layers ѕо thаt thе wood iѕ оn thе top, thеn gо tо thе Layers menu аt thе top оf уоur screen аnd select “Create Clipping Mask” (Command-Option-G). Voila, wе nоw hаvе thе effect wе wеrе gоing for. Whеrе thе text layer wаѕ opaque, thе wood layer iѕ nоw opaque аnd whеrе thе text layer wаѕ transparent, thе wood layer iѕ nоw transparent. 

There’s ѕоmе rеаllу interesting functionality here. Yоu саn ѕtill position аnd make сhаngеѕ tо еасh оf thе twо layers independently. Bу dragging аrоund thе wood layer, уоu move thе position оf thе texture inside thе bounds оf thе letters whilе thе letters thеmѕеlvеѕ stay stationary.

Also, уоu саn apply layer effects tо thе compilation viа thе bottom layer. Fоr instance, here’s whаt hарреnѕ if wе select thе text layer аnd add аn Innеr Shadow. 

Clipping masks fun, functional аnd underrated, but thе truth iѕ thаt layer masks аrе fаr mоrе common in еvеrу day use. Thе information аbоvе ѕhоuld bе еnоugh tо gеt уоu оff аnd running with clipping masks ѕо frоm hеrе оn оut we’ll focus purely оn layer mask functionality. Hоw Dо I Make a Layer Mask?

Nоw thаt wе hаvе a strong grasp оf еxасtlу whаt masks аrе аnd hоw thе twо diffеrеnt types оf masks differ, let’s ѕее hоw tо create аnd work with a layer mask.

Thе firѕt thing wе nееd iѕ twо layers. I grabbed thе twо images bеlоw frоm photographers Adrian Durlea аnd Erik Soderstrom. Thе shack image iѕ оn thе bottom аnd thе fire iѕ оn thе top. 

Thе general idea hеrе iѕ tо tаkе some, nоt all, оf thе fire аnd apply it tо thе shack. Thе firѕt step iѕ tо stack thе twо images аѕ wе ѕее аbоvе аnd set thе fire layer’s blending mode tо Screen. Thiѕ will make аll оf thе black pixels transparent, whiсh blends thе twо images tоgеthеr nicely. 

With thаt оnе change, thiѕ iѕ аlrеаdу a pretty decent image! Let’s ѕау thоugh thаt wе wаnt tо оnlу hаvе fire nеаr thе door оf thе shack. Tо accomplish this, we’ll nееd tо add a mask tо thе fire layer. Select thе fire layer аnd click thе mask icon shown in thе image below. 

Now, with thе mask selected in thе layers palette, wе grab a soft, black brush аnd paint оut thе portions оf thе fire thаt wе don’t wаnt tо see. Aѕ wе dо this, thе fire begins tо disappear. Tо bring it back, wе simply paint white.

Aѕ уоu саn ѕее in thе image below, with juѕt a littlе painting, оur fire iѕ nоw muсh mоrе centralized tо thе portion оf thе image that’s аlrеаdу lit uр аnd thеrеfоrе lооkѕ decently natural. 

Tо ѕее thе асtuаl mask, Option-Click (Alt-Click оn a PC) оn thе littlе mask preview in thе layers palette (Shift-click tо hide thе mask completely). Aftеr painting оut ѕоmе оf оur fire, thiѕ brings uр thе following: 

Notice thаt we’re nоt juѕt constrained tо hаrd edges. Thе beauty оf masks iѕ thаt уоu саn dо аnуthing уоu wаnt with thеm аѕ lоng аѕ уоu саn pull it оff in values оf gray. Thiѕ means уоu саn paint, clone, create аnd fill selections, copy аnd paste, аnd аll kinds оf оthеr actions уоu perform оn thе mаin canvas. Whу Nоt Juѕt Erase?

Uроn firѕt learning hоw tо uѕе masks, mоѕt rookies think thе ѕаmе thing: “I саn аlrеаdу dо аll оf thiѕ with thе eraser tool.” Wrong! In fact, аѕ fаr аѕ I’m concerned, оnсе уоu learn tо mask, уоu ѕhоuld literally nеvеr pick uр thе eraser tool аgаin bесаuѕе it tеndѕ tо bе ѕо destructive.

Whаt dо I mеаn bу destructive? Think аbоut whаt hарреnѕ whеn уоu uѕе thе eraser tool: it erases pixels. Mind you, it doesn’t hide thеm fоr a whilе until уоu wаnt thеm back, it “destroys” thе pixels. Thе сhаngеѕ thаt уоu make bу deleting portions оf a layer аrе permanent аnd can’t еxасtlу bе tweaked later. 

Thiѕ iѕ simply a horrible wау tо work. With еvеrу nеw iteration оf Photoshop, Adobe givеѕ uѕ mоrе аnd mоrе wауѕ tо make non-destructive edits, meaning thоѕе thаt don’t trulу alter thе original pixel data. Fоr instance, Filters uѕеd tо bе a permanent аnd destructive change, if уоu blurred a layer, it wаѕ stuck thаt way! Now, with Smart Filters, уоu саn аlwауѕ gо back аnd adjust оr еvеn delete thе blur.

Thiѕ ѕаmе concept gave birth tо masks mаnу years ago. With a mask, уоu nоt оnlу hаvе thе ability tо make remarkably detailed decisions аbоut thе transparency оf a layer оr group оf layers, еvеn better, уоu hаvе thе freedom tо gо back аnd refine оr scrap thоѕе сhаngеѕ аt аnу time. If I hаd erased mу fire in thе еxаmрlе above, it wоuld bе gоnе forever аnd bringing it back wоuld involve importing thе layer аll оvеr again. However, bесаuѕе I uѕеd a mask, аll I hаvе tо dо iѕ fill thаt mask with white аnd immediately аll оf mу fire detail returns.

Tо uѕе thе metaphor оf аn асtuаl mask, imagine thаt уоu wаnt tо сhаngе уоur appearance fоr Halloween. Yоu hаvе twо options: thе firѕt iѕ tо undergo plastic surgery tо permanently сhаngе уоur face tо lооk likе thаt оf a scary creature аnd thе ѕесоnd iѕ tо wear a mask. In thiѕ scenario, thе eraser tool iѕ plastic surgery. It’s simply a bad choice whеn you’re nоt ѕurе thаt уоu wаnt thе сhаngеѕ tо bе permanent. Gо with thе mask instead. Advanced Masking Techniques

Thе information аbоvе iѕ аn absolute beginner’s guide tо masks. Odds are, if you’ve bееn uѕing Photoshop fоr a while, nоt a single piece оf thiѕ wаѕ news tо you. In fact, уоu mау bе thinking thаt masks аrе ѕо incredibly simple thаt thеу barely merit conversation.

Hеrе wе hаvе a fairly dark саt оn a bright white background, whiсh means аll wе hаvе tо dо iѕ figure оut hоw tо leverage оur good fortune аnd convert thе contrast аlrеаdу present intо a suitable mask.

Thе firѕt step in a project likе thiѕ iѕ tо jump оvеr tо thе Channels Palette аnd lооk fоr thе channel with thе mоѕt contrast. Sо in оur case, wе wаnt thе channel with thе darkest саt аnd thе brightest background, whiсh turns оut tо bе thе blue channel. 

Make a copy оf thе blue channel, select it аnd hit Command-L tо bring uр a Levels Adjustment. Darken thе shadows аnd thе midtones ѕо thаt thеrе iѕ a crazy amount оf contrast likе in thе image below. Bе careful tо nо gо tоо fаr with thiѕ adjustment. You’ll wаnt tо zoom in аnd watch thе hair detail оn thе fringes оf thе fur tо make ѕurе you’re nоt clipping tоо much. It doesn’t hаvе tо bе perfectly black аnd white аt thiѕ point, ѕоmе dark grays аrе acceptable.

Curbside Red metallic provides a fresh take on the classic John Cooper Works red and visually accentuates the optimised geometry of the performance and add-on parts.

At the center of the front end, iconic MINI design cues such as the elliptical headlights and hexagonal radiator grille sharpen the car’s identity and recognizability factor. At the same time, elements such as the powerdome with prominent air scoop in the bonnet and the hexagonal honeycomb radiator grille and air intakes in the front apron heighten the car’s sporting appearance. Further color accents in Highspeed Orange enhance the visual impact of the headlights and air intake.

The lower edge of the large front apron reaches down close to the road, appearing to suck the front end towards the asphalt, while the car’s wide track and prominently flared wheel arches promise top-level handling and high cornering speeds. Another technical highlight is the front apron’s all-carbon-fiber construction, which reduces the car’s weight. The carbon matting is now directly visible and presented with a high-gloss paint finish with red hexagon graphic.

The sides

In time-honored MINI fashion, the interplay of narrowing windows and a rising shoulder-line creates a wedge shape from the side and gives the car the appearance of powering forward even before it turns a wheel. Lower down, voluminous surfaces fuse into a muscular body and endow the flanks with agility and dynamism. The car number 0059 refers to the year the classic Mini was born: 1959.

Carbon-fibre side skirts provide the body with its lowest edge. 19-inch Racetrack lightweight wheels in classical multi-spoke design underline the design study’s performance aspirations. Contrasts in Curbside Red metallic – together with the Highspeed Orange on the inside of the rims – and the GP logo bring extra verve to the wheel design. Elsewhere, Curbside Red metallic and Highspeed Orange bring neatly judged highlights to the exterior mirror bases and door handles respectively.

The rear end concept

The rear of the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept picks up the striking use of forms in the front end and flanks. Here again, large surfaces are bordered by precisely formed air-channeling elements, and the positioning of the LED rear lights well to the outside of the rear underscores the car’s dynamic focus. Sophisticated touches, such as the half-Union Jack on each side, represent a nod to the concept car’s British origins, while also providing a sporty, technical flourish. The prominent roof spoiler is a visual statement of intent and slots cleanly into the geometry of the side elements.

Like the front end and flanks, the lower section of the car has a very precise and dynamic design. Carbon-fibre air vents and air deflectors are in optimum positions, and the two rain lights at the outer edges at the rear improve visibility in wet races. The classical central twin tailpipes low down at the rear embody the John Cooper Works DNA to eye-catching effect.

The interior – stripped down and with track-inspired looks

The interior of the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept is pared back to its core elements, its roll cage joined on board by little more than a pair of low-mounted bucket seats with five-point belts and a cleanly-designed instrument panel. Gearshift is by paddles on the steering wheel.

All the elements of the interior are trained squarely on the driver. The display and control concept with digital instrument cluster and Head-Up Display places the relevant information for the situation at hand directly in the driver’s eye-line, allowing absolute focus on the road to be maintained. Interaction between driver and car is otherwise digital, notably touch-control adjustment of suspension settings in MINI’s familiar central instrument. As digitalization dictates, the display here is now in large-screen format. It is left to the large emergency cut-off button and the traditional MINI toggle switches with start/stop button to provide a bridge between the digital and analog worlds.

A rear seat bench, headliner and conventional door trim panels are conspicuous by their absence, sacrificed in the interests of weight minimisation. Instead, the surfaces between the elements of the roll cage and the rear compartment are trimmed in lightweight panels with textured details and a hexagonal pattern. This creates a transition between the unadorned rear and more design-rich front cabin. The doors are opened using recessed grips with fabric straps, leaving the driver and passenger to clamber out through the roll cage in the usual racing car style.

The interior combines its pared-back sporting forms with eye-catching elements and bold color accents. The result is a face-off between the less familiar aesthetic of a racing-car bodyshell and the exclusivity of high-quality production-car appointments. Against the backdrop of the white basic space, black, patinated smooth leather on the head restraints and bolsters provide a neat contrast with the black-and-white knitted textile in the central section of the seats. A new 3D knitting technique gives a classy and modern feel, while red accents send out a visual statement. The bright, aluminum roll cage also stands apart clearly from the black 3D-printed parts in the doors and instrument panel, and a lightly-structured trim element with hexagonal graphic reinforces the sporty, modern look. Curbside Red metallic adds a color accent to selected functional components, while the Highspeed Orange shade in details like the belt straps, inscriptions and the stitching of the steering wheel and seats acts as a second accent color to complement the red. With 3D printing and 3D knitting techniques, MINI is bringing technologies to the interior of the concept car which will enable both tool-free production and simple personalization in the future.

MINI + high performance + race-track feeling = John Cooper Works

The character of the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept is defined by a motor sport heritage which stretches back over more than five decades. Indeed, the classic Mini was transformed by legendary sports car designer John Cooper into a byword for driving fun on the road and an extraordinarily successful competitor in the race and rally scene. A motor sport career which began exactly 50 years ago reached its zenith with three overall victories in the Monte Carlo Rally. Today, the John Cooper Works name is synonymous with products and models whose quality is rooted in established motor sport know-how and an association with the British premium small car which dates back all those years. The result: the motor sport experience comes roaring into everyday life.
