It's... it's brilliant.

Description

Not one detail from the series is neglected; not one observation is out of joint; not one conjecture or plot thread from the mytharc is left unresolved (and is, in fact, further built upon), and not one moment between all of the characters is off target. Not only that, but it glues together plotholes as effortlessly as if those were the original show writers' intent; and builds and builds and builds the transition from surveillance at home to life on the run with a (psychic) baby.

I confidently say it IS the series: not just the characters' voices or their actions but as if the author captured Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz and all of the writers and actors' vision and-- for lack of a better word-- essence and put it all masterfully on paper. The best way I can describe it is it feels like how S9 would have been, should have been.

Part I is Scully's realization that she can't keep William safe (after his near death in S9) and her slow, cautious attempts-- with TLG's help-- to contact Mulder and slip from her job and her life. Her loved ones are all given their turns for farewell (yes, even Bill); Part II is S8-S9 memories and reunion and bliss and rediscovery and duck-and-dodge and the mytharc creeping back in; Part III is hands-on efforts by Mulder and Scully to save innocents and team up with Gibson and his dispassionate alien allies.

There are so, so many passages that are seared into my mind. If you, like me, want to jump right into the action, I recommend reading Part II's chapters 4 through 9-- the leadup to Scully and William's arrival in a small town, their tense execution of plans, and their reunion with Mulder in motel room 42. The entire series builds to that moment; and continues after, organically placing brick after brick after brick. If you are daunted by long-term commitment, it will, at least, serve as quick taste to either ignite or quench your interest.

And Now, For Quotes

I couldn't possibly select one quote as my favorite (not yet, anyway); and the passages below sadly leave out TLG and Skinner and Doggett and Monica and Maggie and Tara and Bill and excellent minor characters and so, so much more; BUT I can't leave these paragraphs behind, either.

She had once, more than once, had the experience of having to tell a false partner from the real one.  She was one out of two on that scoreboard.  /Have to get it right this time.  If…/

Every sense had to remain engaged, in this moment.  Every single detail…

That Mulder had accepted this solace from her, as he had from no other being, had contributed almost immediately to bringing forth that strange intimacy that they had always had between them; first jocular, almost sibling-like, as he responded to her gentle teasing with startlement and a growing relaxation.  This man who was so used to being abused by others with cruel taunting had been taken aback by her easy reaction to him.  But by doing so, she had aided him in lowering his walls, and so now she would never be fooled by his many self-saving wisecracks.  Neither was she fooled by the protection he had put off at first; his little show of, “Don’t mind me, I’m a harmless crackpot.”  That image, which he had often put off to their superiors and detractors, was countered once you met him in person.  Intelligent; yes.  Without a doubt.  Driven; yes.  Almost wholly so.  Foolish?  Never in a hundred years; though he may have looked that way to others, may have even fostered that impression to aid him in his work.

Mulder tensed, shoulders hunching as he felt her abortive movement.  He shook his head angrily against the memories, but when he spoke his voice was quiet with acceptance… and so plumbed with loss that she felt her own heart break.  “I needed you so badly, Scully,” he finished softly; as if the admission cost him dearly.  “But you weren’t there.  I had pushed you away; and the nightmares kept coming and coming…” 

Unable to stand it anymore, Scully drew close and pressed her body lightly, tentatively to his tense and unyielding backside.  Felt his clammy skin warm automatically with that contact.  He did not soften, at first.  Did not edge away, nor did he lean into her.  Much like that awful night when their office had burnt he simply stood cold with shock and while she supported him; the steadfast fidelity of their bond never questioned in the decade that they had been together.

“I was there,” she murmured into his shoulder.  /I’ll always be here./  He could accept it now.  She was finally able to press her arms about him in the night.  Feel the strong bones beneath unblemished flesh; amazed that he was even alive for her to hold after an ordeal that had indeed taken him from her for so long that she had lost all hope.  She shuddered and cinched her arms tighter; felt his ribs shift beneath the silky envelope of his skin.  They creaked in protest, but he did not move, and she spoke like one driven.  “I was there hurting for you, holding you against the nightmares, even when you couldn't ask me to be there.  I was with you every night until you came back to me.”

Hi. Um. I am very curious about the Alma/Pedro underground revolutionary romance you mentioned in the notes of one of your posts....

This one is long, because I can never give a brief answer, haha

For context, I reblogged this post with the tags: #...Okay: next time a fic requires the Encanto to have a bunch of books it will be because they have One Guy #who ran an illicit printing press publishing politically contentious materials #and sets up a new one in the Encanto #almost all the classics are awful knockoffs though and this results in Debate when the Encanto opens and someone gets in a conversation #about their beloved favorite scene that exists only in the Encanto's fanfictionalized canon

Which got me thinking about That One Guy and how they connect to Alma’s and Pedro’s life prior to the miracle.

Starting with what we see of Alma as a political figure:

The Encanto has free universal healthcare. I doubt anyone goes hungry, either. If the magic healing food is freely available to anyone who needs it, I can’t imagine the regular food being hoarded, and with The Family Madrigal demonstrating Pepa watering fields of crops, I don’t think the Encanto struggles with famine, after the rocky first years.

The same song shows 75 year old Alma helping with the construction of a new house. Is everyone else a dedicated construction worker working on a contact, and she just drops in on job sites sometimes? Or (the interpretation I go with) is this a collective community effort along the lines of a barn raising? The chain of people standing still and passing materials to each other doesn’t behave like I would expect from a construction crew, which would usually have too few people to make that effective. But a large group of friends and neighbors? The Encanto has a very strong sense of connection. If you watch the background during the scenes in town, there’s people constantly meeting up and chatting. I think the standard practice in the Encanto is community-built housing.

(This also foreshadows and establishes the rebuilding in All of You. The Madrigals have long provided support to the town without receiving it in turn. But when they’re in need, the welfare structures they’ve created and contributed to are there to help them, too. It’s a bookend, and the symbol of the Madrigals truly becoming part of the community, instead of living on pedestals.)

Which would mean that Alma founded and leads a town with universal healthcare, food, and housing. The latter two aren’t explicitly canon, but I do think they make more sense than alternate explanations.

Going more into inferences: the refugees arrived in the Encanto with almost nothing in the way of material possessions. The only person with any sort of landed property was Alma herself. Upon founding, the Madrigals were essentially the only family with any form of inherited wealth. Do you think that a community of desperate refugees living in the near-wilderness and dependent on each other’s collective skills and knowledge to eke out their survival would re-form a stratified socio-economic class structure? Especially with the knowledge of the strong social welfare structures they form in the future?

TL;DR Alma believes strongly in mutual aid and community support and uses her position of power to found a communist paradise.

With that in mind, the fic idea, inherently a tragedy Because Canon:

Alma has ideas about things like land ownership and the sorts of support a society should guarantee its members. Fanon characterizes Pedro as a writer. I think this came from a canon-adjacent source? I’ve also seen the idea floated in the fandom that he specifically wrote political essays.

So: Pedro is also politically invested, and writes some contentious material. (Which is the real lure of this idea to me. Thematically, I think it works really well for the Alma we see in canon, and for the struggles I imagine she went through in the aftermath of Pedro's death, left suddenly as the leader of a valley of similarly traumatized people relying on her for survival.)

Unfortunately, this would require A Lot of research about the political climate of late 19th century Colombia, including things like majority/minority political stances, what the most common forms of activism were, and the ways that political dissent was treated. I can say that Alma probably disagreed with the privatization of formerly communal farmland, based on the operation of the Encanto. But I’d need to put considerable time into figuring out:

what the cohesive political groups at the time supported and disagreed on, and where Alma and Pedro could fit amid/around those groups

what sort of activist actions she and Pedro might have taken that could have led to local policy changes (since local policy is where a lot of change happens, please vote in your local elections, folks)

who would have been likely to react to their attempts to organize (who stands to lose, who stands to gain, who is just going about their day)

how those people and organizations might have reacted to activism and how that would shape Alma’s and Pedro’s decision making, and how this would shape the views I would write them as having, in order to make the narrative more compelling

And tons of other things. Just looking at those, I’d need... several books and a ton of articles as source material so I could do the real world setting justice, as well as better Spanish reading skills since I imagine many relevant primary sources and a good deal of secondary sources would not be available in translation. This would also mean that there is an immovably heavy printing press inside of Casita and Alma’s old friend the printer just goes to work in their house for several decades before anyone realizes that, hang on, Luisa’s out there tossing bridges around like pizzas, she can move this.

Since the creation of the word ‘Art’, Humanity has searched for the answer to the following question:  Who or What is an artist? The answer to this question is very different to many people all across the world; and even the word Art has so many definitions that even dictionaries can’t seem to agree what the meaning of these three letters are… I often wonder though, what does the word artist even mean to most people? From what I’ve gathered (and for the most part) the word artist has traditionally meant someone who is skilled in the fine arts; someone who is considered to being either a painter, illustrator, musician or a writer… but there’s more to it than just skill, right? One could argue that the old masters were more skilled than anyone living now, but there’s also an argument to be made that we are the more skilled now because there’s centuries worth of tips and tricks passed down thru the generations to aid us in our creations… but that also makes me think about the end result, and how easy it is for us compared to them… For example, right now, for digital artists it‘s faster to get from “0 to 60” than it was for someone living in the renaissance era, but just because the digital artist can produce more work, faster, does that make them greater? And also, is the end result what matters most about a finished piece? What is the most important part of art; the finished product or the creation of it?

I, for one, don’t consider myself an artist. I’m a guy who likes to draw and as a person who has been paid to create cartoon illustrations for a living, frankly, I think the word Artist is overrated… and truthfully, I think that naming someone an ‘Artiste’ is something that should be reserved for Art Historians. But I think, we can all agree that effort is what makes you an artist. Your blood, sweat and tears is what makes you admired by your peers and the general public… I’d like to believe that one day, if I give enough of my blood, sweat and tears to this practice, I can eventually contribute something to society that would be worthy of the consideration of being called an Original Artistic Vision or whatever... But of course, it’s not a small task; It takes a lot of effort to make something worth while… something worth the other person’s precious time… art is subjective, so one man’s treasure is another man’s trash… but all we can do is keep working towards it, because in many ways, this is what brings us peace, it keeps us from the void of that empty feeling we get sometimes that tells us ‘your existence is worthless’.

Campus journalism has evolved into a venue for youth to hone their skills, practice self-discipline, engage in critical thought, and become early champions of press freedom. As they advance through the learning and experience process, the staff members of campus journalism may adopt a variety of cultures. The young journalists also pick up delegation skills and a respect for collaboration. In fact, campus journalism teaches students how to develop into well-rounded, contributing members of society.

By enacting Republic Act 7079, the Philippine government has shown a strong commitment to advancing campus journalism. This is done in part to uphold and defend press freedom, but it is also done in an effort to strengthen ethnic values, foster critical and creative thought, and help Filipino youth develop moral character and self-discipline.

With this, a School-Based Press Conference may be created in schools, giving every student and teacher the chance to participate and allowing those who are capable of doing so to develop their abilities and be acknowledged. For instance, the Dulag National High School launched an initiative called Journalism on Board (JOB). If every school adopted this practice, it would help our government in the area of college media and generate skilled writers to compete in press conferences.  Press conferences were held more often, which increased efforts to promote university journalism. The responsibility for training student writers and overseeing the production of school paper for the individual and group competition falls on school paper advisers.
