hello everyone, annoying spaniard here!!! these last few days i've been stressing over assignments so i didn't have time or will to post one of these, but i'm back and this post is gonna be a bit longer so yay!

if you don't know what i'm doing, i'm just playing pokemon scarlet and violet and commenting on any references to my culture i come across :) here's my previous post btw

let's start with porto marinado's marketplace!! markets are big in spain, they can be found all throughout the country and i feel there's not a single market that served as inspiration for the paldean one, below i'll just add the ones i know the most / the most representative ones: the la cebada and san miguel markets in madrid, the la boquería market in barcelona, and the central market in valència

staying on this topic, i also really like kofu as a gym leader and specifically as a chef! as you could already imagine by looking at paldea, food is incredibly important in spain, it is part of our cultural identity and it plays a huge part in almost every aspect of daily life. there's 283 michelin stars in the country, and spanish chefs have won the title of best chefs in the world on numerous occasions. cooking shows are very popular, and in most of them there's always a section where the chef goes to the market to get fresh produce, just like kofu does! his personality reminds me a lot of famous tv chef karlos arguiñano, while his design is more similar to chef josé andrés, an incredible human being who's done a lot of humanitarian aid around the world and who recently got awarded with a honorific plaque in kyiv by ukrainian president zelensky as well as with the order of honor.

i've already commented on this but i hadn't seen the actual postal office building until now; the colour of mail service here is yellow, just like in the games :)

i found a new restaurant which means new food yay!!!

the first dish is just pintxos, similar to tapas but make them basque, and that area is really big on fish and seafood so it makes sense than their pokemon counterpart also has them!

even if arroz con leche is usually associated with argentina, it actually originated in spain and it is a traditional dessert still handmade in rural areas and widely consumed all over the country

even though levincia is 100% inspired in valència, both because of its location and its modern / technological look (also its name), the business area looks like it took inspiration on the cuatro torres business area and the AZCA district in madrid, the heart of business stuff in the country.

(btw the four towers in the pic are now five so much closer to their pokémon counterparts)

also as a quick note i find very funny the fact that the largest company in paldea seems to be a construction one, as the 2008 spanish economic crisis started (among other factors) due to the high speculation within that sector lol

i also find iono a hilarious concept for a paldean gym leader cause streamers are actually very popular in spain, i would say most young people (including myself) follow at least one streamer, and just looking at the top streamers list for november 2022, i'm counting 4 spanish streamers in the top 50 of the world. spanish youtubers are pretty high in the hispanic twitch community and for what i've seen on the internet recently younger latines are beginning to associate spain with twitch and streamers which lol. and of course, i cannot talk about spanish streamers without talking about ibai llanos, probably the most influential person to young people right now in the country (and a pretty good influence that is); he has the 4th most-followed twitch channel in the world, he's won the streamer of the year award in 2020 and 2021, held many irl events that have broken twitch view records, and has managed to rival mainstream television. in fact, spanish television seems to hold an absurd grudge against streamers and sees them as direct competitors, it's all very bizarre and makes all of iono's thing even funnier.

also - and i realise this is only a thing that happens in the spanish version of the game but it brought me immense joy and i wanted to share it with you - all of iono's lines and in general all of her gym was full of references to twitter memes and basically internet slang, it was both delightful and painful. here are some of my favorites:

she would say 'hacer la combatición' ('do the fightation') instead of 'combatir' ('fight'), and this is a reference to twitter slang; instead of saying 'morir' ('die') people would just type 'hacer la morición' ('do the diation'). it's just a funny and nonsensical way of saying it, that's it. also i've said this irl so it's one of those expressions capable of jumping outside of the internet into everyday vocabulary

at one point she calls you 'monstro/a' ('monster'), which is an expression the singer and celebrity rosario flores uses during the the voice auditions (she's a coach there) a lot, to the point it became a meme.

this one made me holler because it is one of my favourite expressions and one i use all the time... anyways when you defeat this trainer (i believe he's the first one?) he says 'emosido ganados' ('we have been beaten'). the correct way of writing that phrase is 'hemos sido ganados', and it is a reference to this graffitti which has become a staple in the twitter reaction meme repertoire ('emosido engañado' reads 'we have been fooled', the correct way of writing it is 'hemos sido engañados'). i unfortunately also say this one irl from time to time rip me

Kinktober Day 6- Eating Out

Yeah I know, I'm like no longer a week late, I'm closer to a week and a half at this point. But if anyone knows my lemons, they are lemons WITH FEELINGS. Because if you're gonna go lemon, go full meyer lemon bar or a lemon cake or SOMETHING. It is going to be an EXPERIENCE that is completely submersive. And yeah, I went hog wild with this because I can and OF COURSE I had to go foodie on this. And at this point, no one can stop me. mwahaha.

So meet Emily Stardrift, co-owner/operator of her family's intergalactic food business. Which is actually mentioned in my Jika stories. And Seshire- an aquatic alien part of an envoy for his planet's Ambassador on a space station. And yes, I'm stealing Star Trek stuff because I grew up a on Star Trek Next Generation Picard and it shows in my terminology. Like. A lot. Just FYI.

Again, many, many thanks to @starsandskies for sharing her kinktober prompts. Again, sorry for the delay. My real life just keeps getting stupidly more complex and complicated. But hey, at least I can escape into these prompts and for a brief moment- have peace, and satsifaction.

Kinktober Day 6 Eating Out 

“Is that an extra tentacle in your pants are you just happy to see me?” You teased licentiously as you watched as Ambassador Lisha’s envoy associate- by the name of Seshire stationed at Tarek Nor as he came over to you on his special hoverboard that turned down the gravity while he was on the board so he could remain upright and not look like an octopus out of water under “normal” gravity on the station. 

Tarek Nor was a gigantic space station, stationed right behind the Earth’s moon and placed in such a way that it orbited Earth with the moon and added just a bit more power to the tides and when the Earth eclipsed the moon, there was a halo of space station around the new moon that the sun lit up that was actually quite pretty from the Earth’s perspective. 

Since you were one of your father’s elder daughters and had made you not only the manager of this hub on Tarek Nor, but a partner and co-owner in his business.  He and your mother both trained you and all your siblings practically since infancy to know more about intergalactic produce than you did about your native Earth produce only because they were the first people rich enough to build and then to open up the intergalactic market Astris- in the city. And part of this business, which your parents preferred to entrust the most important jobs within the family. 

So while your parents ran Astris, all your siblings were practically scattered across not just the galaxy but also the greater extent- this sector of the Federation space in the universe. It was your job and all of your sibling’s jobs to oversee the biggest branches and hubs that both supplied Astris on the surface and to supply the space stations. And your family equipped their own ships, which were armed to the teeth like the armored trucks that carried hard currency around of the past. But also equipped with not just warp capabilities, up to warp 10, but also hyperspace, where you could jump from galaxy to galaxy and make trips that most would take weeks or months at even Warp 9- your family’s ships could do them in mere minutes. And the Federation made sure to pay your family very well for not only providing intergalactic foods for Earth but especially this sector of the Federation. And of course an extra bonus to pay special attention that every and all Ambassadors stationed on this base especially got everything they needed and wanted to stay happy and content being stationed so far away from home but serve their political purposes. 

And because of that- it meant your family’s business- Intergalactic Foods Unlimited- could now receive produce from all over the universe, buy it, sell it, barter for it, whatever needed to be done to attain it- you had the clearance and the resources to do. And while the chain of intergalactic produce had a series of inspectors to simply make sure none of the foods themselves were either harmful, toxic to whoever was cleared to buy it, but also didn’t come with any parasites or micro-organisms that could kill off entire space stations of peoples.

But often, you could catch more than they could because this was something you had been training all your senses for since before you were in kindergarten and your own inspection process made the official Federation Inspectors look like rookies while you, your parents and your siblings and all the other managers and workers look like the true eliete professionals you were.

And you- like all your siblings were rather married to the job. But it was a very lucrative one- and one worth being married to. Because if you let one thing slide, the lives of countless others could be in danger, which was a burden and a responsibility you took incredibly seriously. 

You worked very hard and rather long hours to get in all your produce from your suppliers who were technically subcontractors who you had the authority to haggle and pay however they wanted or needed to be paid, whether in just Federation Credits or usually fuel and supplies for their ships, or any other currency used throughout the universe and you had access to not just the company's accounts as a whole but your hub had it's own special accounts that you had absolute control over. And you made sure that every single person on your team worked just as hard as you did. Didn't let anything slide or do sloppy careless work. And could do so efficiently and quickly. And were compensated accordingly which meant that your branch had very, very little turnover. And you were the kind of manager to work side by side with everyone else and pick up slack when others had illness or family issues to come up.

But the most important part of your job, besides making sure that everything was not only bought and sold and barted for legally and fairly so that if the Federation ever wanted to do surprise inspections or audits, that you'd pass with flying colors, was also the task of your team to then divide up all the produce into the orders of both the restaurants and food vendors on Tarek. And if there was any extra, since most suppliers counted on at least 20% of their produce rotting during transgalactic journeys to get to this space station. But you did give your suppliers “incentive” for really good, and very clean produce while offering free disposal for any of the produce’s loss.

Which was really just fruits and vegetables being bruised or just on the edge of overripe. And the bruised produce, you were happy to give away to the less fortunate stranded on the station as more of a “free food bank” kind of thing. And the ones right on the edge of over-ripe, were usually perfect for smoothies, or other mixed drinks at the bars because the extra strong flavors were good for the drinks and also great for your bottom line.

Almost everyone who stocked their food stalls on the station swore by your exquisite taste, eye and sense of smell. You could tell just by the scent, touch, look or color of produce what stage of ripeness it would be and how many hours or days or even weeks before it would be best to be eaten at. And you knew the all the subtleties of everything that passed through your hub.

But what you personally did, was take the best of the best and reserve it for both your wealthiest clients who paid extra to get the best of the best of the produce from this hub on Tarek Nor, and get the same quality of foods for the Ambassadors and their envoys. And for those special and very important orders, you filled those personally.  

And Seshire either volunteered or was appointed to accept all the food sent in from his homeworld for his friend, who was in reality more like his aunt- Ambassador Lashi. She and her envoy were stationed there at the station. Seshi was also in charge of gathering and paying for other things from the other worlds for his Ambassador and the rest of the engoy. Including foods from Earth.

And you were slowly but surely importing more and more produce from Earth to them so that they were more familiar and comfortable with being so close to “a death planet”. Which Earth had that rather well earned reputation and while Earth was your homeworld, you could see why and how it got that reputation too. Which meant that all the natives of Earth got extra respect both from the Jika but especially the Federation and all those within it. 

But Seshire, to you- was rather special. He was a cephalopodic species. Meaning they had more in common with Earth’s octopi and cuttlefish than he did with humans. But he was still seen as a “person”. Someone with intelligence and sentience worthy and owed respect and dignity just as much as you were and very much your equal in most respects. He was intelligent, quick witted and really funny and just slightly flirty. Which you didn’t mind, most suppliers flirted in negotiations, others flirted more with your company and it’s deep pockets and you as an heiress to it rather than with you as an individual. 

But with Seshire, that wasn’t the case. He actually took an interest in you as an individual. He made sure to express to the Federation how vital of a service you and your family’s business provided and made sure that you were more than duly compensated for your very hard work that his Ambassador and all the other Ambassadors were very quick to agree with.

And, most importantly- you really liked Seshire too. You were honestly attracted to him and to you at least, it was pretty obvious the attraction was mutual. But because of the professional and ethical codes of conduct, you both were restricted to simply flirting but not really physically being able to do much more about it. But if there was anyone who would make you want to throw the rulebook out the window. It would be Seshire.

Granted he did have to go everywhere on a special hoverboard to help him move around Tarek without being smooshed to the floor. Because on Seshire’s homeworld, the planet had the same gravity that the moon did. But the core was so dense that the small planet had quite the atmosphere that was as thick as soupy fog on Earth. And breathing in his atmosphere that he and his envoy’s rooms had practically terraformed to mimic their home world’s atmosphere was a challenge, but not one that you were not up to the task for. Becuase the oxygen content was actually higher. But it was just denser. It was like being in a sauna actually. Where the hot thick humidity gave your lungs a work out.

You had actually gone to his quarters and the quarters of his Ambassador quite a food times when he couldn’t pick up his envoy’s order himself and you had to deliver it to him at the end of your day. the extent you prayed to any and every god and goddess that would listen that your deodorant wouldn’t die out in the moments you got to spend in their quarters dropping off their food order when they had summit meetings or other events that prevented them from picking it up themselves. Granted you had to use your special boots to magnetically cling to the floor because of the lessoned gravity on his envoy’s section of the station because otherwise you’d be floating up to the ceiling. Because while his planet had enough of a dense core to support a thick atmosphere, it still had a fraction of the gravity. And most of his species could “swim” in the atmosphere like most sealife swam in the ocean. Thus- why his species was cephalopodic and why they needed the special hoverboards to provide columns of lesser gravity so they could stand on them but still adjust how they stood on them to move around.

“I am, and it could be a bit of both. Are the shishi melons in?” He asked hopefully. 

“Do you see huge large purple watermelons floating next to me or not?” You asked as you nodded to your antigravity cargo column that you kept his and all of his produce both from his homeworld. Along all the other produce he and his envoy ordered in his “shopping cart” that was designated just for his envoy.

Some envoys were huge and took up several carts worth. But Seshire and his Ambassador and the rest of the envoy were only a party of six. So he usually got one of the “big” carts. Which was usually more than enough space to store all their foods in comfortably.

But the melons in question weighed damn near 100lbs each despite them being the size of only a basketball under normal gravity because they were just…so dense, delicious but dense. And they– as a fruit, did in fact remind you of a watermelon. Same size and shape. Just different color on the rind. But the color always reminded you of an eggplant. When unripe- looked white eggshell white. But the more ripe it was- the darker purple the rind- until it was almost black with pink spots. The darker the purple and the more intense the pink spots, the sweeter and better the melon.

And the perfect “ripeness” was a deep purple, and coincidentally the exact shade of a ripe eggplant that you yourself used nearly every day to check for the ripeness of these particular melons along with a pink dragonfruit to compare the pink spots too, like a green watermelon having a white belly or a yellow belly as an indicator of ripeness vs the shades of green and the pattern on the rind.

Granted your eggplant that you used to check was artificial, and had bands of various degrees of “ripeness” that you could catagorize each one as to which stage of ripeness it was while your dragonfruit was the same, artificial, but had the various shades of light pink to dark intense pink that bordered on magenta. It was a tool you always kept on hand to compare to make sure they weren’t too under-ripe or over-ripe.

The underripe ones could be good, because those could go down to Astris and by the time they made it to the display stall, they were practically perfect. But the Ambassadors and their envoys didn’t like to “wait” for their own native foods to be ripe before they could eat them. They wanted to literally be able to take it out of the shopping cart and eat it immediately, if not within the week before their next shipment came in so you made sure each individual had at least three of them. One at perfect ripeness to eat immediately, which could take a day or two to do. Then by the time they finished the first, the second would be ready to be eaten and by the time the second was consumed the third would tide them over before the next shipment would get in. Meaning you had 18 melons that you needed in three varying degrees of ripeness and they always ordered 40 of them, just in case.

But after a few days of Seshire’s envoy coming to the Tarek Nor, your company figured out that if they went to the homeworld to get them fresh off the vine directly when they were just three to six shades lighter than a ripe Earth’s eggplant which each shade was a stage of ripeness, leaving two stages for ripening in transit. And than they’d be perfectly ripe by the time they came to this station and that also left two stages for the most "underripe" of them to practically guaranteed their safe and successful delivery to Astris on Earth. And these heavy purple melons were worth the extra care because they were seen as quite the delicacy and often had a waiting list on the other 24 melons in the 40 melon order. Usually six or 8 of them went to the other ambassadors since the ambassadors also traded thier own native foods as part of intergalactic food sharing program.

But here on Tarek, where Ambassador Lashi and her envoy were currently stationed for the Federation- they were put here because the station was the closest Federation station to their jomeworld but Earth’s gravity was much too heavy for the species and the modifications for their quarters would be not only costly but extremely difficult at Federation Headquarters on the surface. And thanks to the stations' building specifications, they could go anywhere and everywhere on the station instead of special designated areas on the Federation Embassy Base. Which Seshi and the rest of his envoy preferred anyway.

So here on Terek Nor they were. And since you managed this hub for your father here, you got to know all the members from the envoys that were appointed to get and provide food for the rest of the envoy. Which is how you and Seshire got to be such good friends in just a short three months since he came here with the Ambassador. And he and the entire envoy were just so thankful and grateful that not only would the Federation pay you to get their foods from the homeworld, since the replicator tried and failed rather miserably to replicate them. But you did so in such a way that they felt like they had access to their own farmer’s market back on the homeworld. And they kept you up to date on- which produce would be in season when- which made weekly ship trips to the planet necessary, but also quite profitable. Because while all the produce was heavy and dense and had to be very carefully transported, it made it that much more “coveted” and “costly” to provide to everyone else outside of the Ambassador and their envoys- especially the market on Astris.

And your particular hub had a digital catalog for each of the Ambassadors and the wealthier clients as to what was available when at any point in the year on the station. And the Federation of course gave the Ambassadors more or less an allowance for non-native foods delivered that they chose not to use a replicator to make. 

However there was a legal loophole- and one that many had learned to easily exploit- order way more than the Ambassador and their envoys could ever eat in a week and sell the remainder in your food stalls and earn extra money that way to both support the Ambassadors and thier envoys. And give the other “wealthier” clients a “discount”, if only to do better business and politics for their individual homeworlds. Each Ambassador could “rent” out space at either a stall here or any other hub or market. But usually Astris, where they could get the most for their produce. Your parents appointed an entire floor just for the “stalls” for all the Ambassadors and their foods, which your other sister Didi ran. 

And these purple melons were- honestly one of a kind in the galaxy, much less the universe. And were considered an intergalactic delicacy that because of the special transportation protocols made them rather expensive. But they were well worth the effort because the taste and texture of the thick and satisfying gummy bear like flesh that surrounded the seeds that were spicy like peppercorns when chewed. It was both like a the juicy yet gummy consistency of a concord grape, mixed with a ripe passion fruit and something uniquely intergalactic that Earth simply didn’t have an equivalent for. 

But today’s shipment for Seshire and his envoy came with a special addition meant to be given to Seshire directly, from his parents back on the homeworld, as per the instructions that came with it. It was a special plant. In Federation approved “pot” that contained the soil of his homeworld. That once scanned and “decontaminated” of anything harmful to anyone living on Terek Nor. So it sat next to you in it's own special lowered gravity cylander so you could keep an eye on it and keep it safe. Especially as you sat on the crate for your most wealthy client who liked to keep their own “foods” and produce a secret among the prying eyes of the other Ambassadors and clients- which you respected and complied with. 

“I do.” Seshire readily agreed as he looked at them and appreciated the brillant but deep purple they were along with the bright pink spots along with the various other melons from both Earth and around the galaxy and universe. Anything with a hard rind, with soft and sweet flesh on the inside, he and his envoy and especially his Ambassador were very partial to. And you got him those special Sugar Kiss and Honey Kiss melons from Earth today too. 

“Oh, by the way, it seems your parents sent you a plant.” You offered as you picked up the cylander that held the pot and it's plant and handed it to him, as you reached into his column of lessoned gravity over his hoverboard, so he could easily take it from you just as his tentacled appendages grabbed ahold of the steering handle of the cart. 

This was not uncommon. Many parents sent special “gift baskets” to their children who were either Ambassadors or part of their envoys. And usually bouquets of native flora for special occasions. But you didn’t invade Seshire’s privacy by reading the message that came with it. And when Seshire saw it. He froze. Wide eyed and the parts of his body not covered in his ambassador envoy federation clothing style, flashed colors that you only got to see when they were under duress. 

“Sesh. What’s wrong? Is the plant dead? Did it not survive the trip?” You asked worriedly. 

“No, no. That’s..that’s not it.” He stuttered as he started at the bud wrapped up in it’s leaves like a rose of Jerico, also known as part of the family of “ressurection plant’s". That both balled up and then unfurled when in water and better living conditions. 

And when Seshire put the natural secretions that could be made from the center of his palm over it, just like all those rose of Jerico time lapses, in just mere seconds it went from rather lifeless to unfurling gorgeous green foliage with a bright pink and purple flower in the middle and he dropped it. But instead of it falling and it shattering on the floor it stayed in his column of lowered gravity and simply hovered in front fo him as he seemed to glue the back of himself and squish against the more “solid” barrier of the back of his hoverboard as a way to try to get distance from it. But seeing his reaction, you immediately jumped up and snatched it out of his lower gravity field his hoverboard created for him and put it back into it's special cylinder and pulled it back towards yourself.

“Sesh, what does this mean? Did someone die?” You asked him worriedly. 

“Excuse me, I, uh, I have to go.” He immediately answered and manuvered his hoverboard to practically speed out of there leaving you with the rather pretty plant and his cart still next to you as you looked rather bewildered for a moment before you looked to your assistant manager- Kimmy. 

“Hey, Kim. Make sure all these orders make it to their buyers. I gotta make sure Ambassador Lashi and her envoy get their order. Apparently this plant means that someone died and Seshi just left me with it and forgot his envoy’s order. I’m gonna deliver it personally and make sure everything is ok.” You urged her before you handed her your clipboard to Kimmy to finish your portion of the job that was making sure all the other most important clients got their orders, which were clearly marked and all the real work was already done, all that needed to be done was for them to pick up the orders and pay you. 

You rather quickly dropped of the order at the Ambassador’s room while also leaving out what you knew was Sesh’s personal order was. 

“Ambassador Lashi, what does this mean?” You asked her as you showed her the plant as her own eyes grew wide. 

“Oh. Uh. Depends on who sent it to him.” Lashi answered.

“His parents.” You answered. 

“Then it means his time as part of my envoy is over and he’s being called back home.” Lashi answered. 

“Why?” You asked, as you felt a strange sense of panic that you'd never be seeing them again and you'd have to start all over with someoen else and you didn't want that. You liked Seshi. like a lot. You did not want to see him go. He was usually the best part of your day on this blasted base.

“It’s a private affair within our culture.” Was all that Lashi would say. 

“Ok. Then I will make sure he keeps it in his possession because the moment he looked at it and put the mucus gland on his palm over it and it bloomed, he dropped it and then glued himself to the back of his hoverboard’s barrier, like this beautiful flower was going to bite or sting him or something. And had it not been in his column of lessoned gravity, it would have fallen to the floor and most likely would have shattered.” You explained.

“Well, again, it is a personal, private, matter. But if he received this, it means he’ll be needing to take a ride on your supply ship to our homeworld and when he gets off, I’ll have his replacement ready to take his place.” She offered. 

“But you guys just got here. I just barely got to learn your tastes for things, much less being able to tell you all apart and I hate to see a good friend go home when they clearly- at least to me and my own reading of universal body language- don’t want to go.” You tried to counter. 

“I’m sorry Emily. Seshire has always said that you were his favorite friend outside of our envoy and the best part of his duties. And I’m sure his replacement will feel the same.” She tried to reassure you comfortingly. 

“Well, from the language you are using, it must be serious and obviously, it must include duty to either your species, your culture or familial units.” You surmised. 

“Yes. You are correct on all counts. You are quite intelligent to discern that from such a simple but sacred thing that you are holding.” Lashi answered. 

“And there’s nothing you can do to keep him here if he does not want to accept whatever else this signifies that he must take on?” You asked. 

“No. Even according the natives of Earth, nothing stands between familial ties and duties and responsibilities correct? You are the daughter of your father, thus he trusts you to run the most important part of his business on this space station. Something you would normally not be doing if your family was in a different business correct?” She reasoned in turn. 

“Yeah. Good point. And you know how seriously I take that responsibility.” You sighed dissappointedly.

“And you do so with more honor and grace than most of the other ambassadors and politicians do when they represent their peoples.” Lashi praised. 

“Thank you. So I uh, I should get this and Seshi’s order to him. I don’t want him to go hungry before he has to leave.” You reasoned to excuse yourself and bring your cart to Seshi’s door and knocked your knock that you always used specifically with Seshi.

Each one had their own peculiar knock they liked for you to use so they would know who was at their door and what their purpose was for being there before they would have to use the cameras to see for themselves to see who was at their door. But Seshi answered the door only partially dressed and because of it, you could clearly see the distress and duress flashing on his skin. 

“You forgot your food.” You managed to say before you pushed the cart into his room. 

“Oh, yes, sorry. I uh, I got so…caught up…overwhelmed…” He began to say before he let a string of curses in his native tongue out as the pattern intensified on his skin and he retreated to his room to cover up more of himself.

Your eyes glazed with tears and your heart broke to see him react this way but you went ahead and put the now very light foods into his food unit for him. And while you knew, you should get back. You couldn't bring yourself to leave. Not until you knew more about this thing and what it meant to him.

So you parked the cart by the door and still held the cylinder in your hands as you looked for a place to put it. You saw the special place he usually used for flower arrangements to decorate his quarters from the intergalactic flower shops on Tarek Nor’s promenade. And you figured that was as good a place as any as you pulled the pot and it's flower out of the cylander to put it beside them. But you hesitated to set it down there. Something about this wasn't right and in fact, felt all wrong too.

So instead forced the back of your legs to flex so you could “sit” on his species version of a couch in his quarters with the potted plant in your hands as you waited for him to return. All so you could learn what such a beautiful thing actually meant. Aesthetically it was very pretty. Bright and colorful and it even smelled nice. Like it’s own flower garden.

But all you heard was fabric ripping apart and him falling onto his bed and sobbing in his bedrooom. Which spurned you into action before you got up and entered his room to see him with pieces of his “uniform” for his upper half in four different pieces as it seemed each arm’s hand as he sat on the bed and had curled into himself like the plant had been before he put his palm over it.

“Sesh, What’s going on?” You asked as you came over to him and had to use your hamstrings to force your body against the lighter gravity to sit down on the bed, next to him and pet down from his head down to one of his arms which prompted him to partially uncurl himself.

“I have to go home.” He answered as he sniffled.

“And you don’t want to go.” You gathered. 

“No. No I don’t.” He laughed despite his distressed coloring on the upper part of his body since his skin was very similar to that of a cuttlefish or an octopus, in that it could shift in a various range of colors and patterns that was their previous way of communication and had to develop their audible speech. 

“Why?” You asked before he gently took the flower in it’s pot from your hands and held it in his own. 

“You know how, when we make extra orders from home, to sell in your other markets for extra money?” He asked. 

“Yeah.” You nodded. 

“Well, did you know that our envoy was actually supposed to be three times the size it is now?” He asked. 

“Yeah, but I thought that was only because that’s all that the Federation allotted for you to have.” You murmured because the bigger the world or the more precious and valuable the resources the planet had, the more powerful the Ambassador’s power and usually the bigger his envoy within any Embassy at any other Federation station or base.

“No. It’s because only of a third of us could handle the harsher living conditions here. We spent a year trying to prepare for them. But when we first came and had to jump in head first so to speak. Most of my friends couldn’t handle it. It caused them too much distress to their physical person and they quit to go back home." He began with a shuddering breath.

"But at the same time, the income that came with being part of the envoy was what made part of being in the envoy so appealing to begin with. Cepha 4 is basically a farming community otherwise we have a dozen markets where we sell, trade and barter what each farm grows. That's it. How we got into the Federation is practically a miracle. But besides the income and besides the new horizons and new adventures and new explorations and the new people bits. It's why most of us wanted to go. But then we get here and it's so much harder than we ever thought it could be." He confessed.

"And immediately two thirds of Aunt Lashi's group quit. But Lashi had already signed on as Cepha 4's Ambassador, she couldn't quit, she was too stuborn to quit. And she determined to make sure that Cepha 4 is never taken advantage of or vulnerable to anyone in or out of the Federation. And it's why she's been like a second mother to all of us. And because she was family- I was determined to stay because if she- being three times my age could do it- so could I. And then I met you and you alone make everything else, all the harshness here, worth it. Because being your friend and being in your company is the best part of all of this and now I don't want to go back, because I know if I do, I won't see you ever again and I don't want to lose you, especially over this." Seshi explained through his own angry tears that fell onto the pot as his grip on it threatened to crush it in his hands.

"But then the Federation reworked our Ambassador agreement. As long as each member of the envoy stayed for a certain amount of time, they could “retire” back on the homeworld for dealing with the harsh living conditions here and have a pension for it. So while our Ambassador’s envoy is a third the size of what it should be, instead of making three times as much while we’re here, it’s all now shifted. Just like an army has a tour of duty. Now on my homewold, many are eager to have a tour of being in the Ambassador’s envoy because we make more on our tour and with the "retirement" than we ever could in our own markets. And because the Ambassador is older and past her offspring stage, she won’t be needed back on the homeworld and can afford to spend the rest of her life on Tarek as she pleases and send any extra income back to her surviving family back home…” Seshi began to explain as his voice wavered and warbled with emotion. 

“So I take it. Three months is your tour time. And now you get to go home, and begin the offspring stage. So is this like…an engagement ring? You have a bride waiting on you and your retirement pension when you get home?” You guessed. 

“Yeah.” Seshi croaked. 

“Do you even know her?” You asked. 

“I do. We were friends, or perhaps, playmates- as children.” He answered.  

“But as adults?” You posed. 

“She is- as an English speaker would say- nobility or royalty. Her family owns all the market squares where all the farmers come to do their business and she and her family get first dibs on whatever they want as thier "cut" or "taxes". But the living conditions here are too harsh for her and for her personally, not worth the ordeal of dealing with the harsh conditions when she already has it so good right at home where she is. And while she has that social standing, she is one of many daughters in her family. It would not surprise me if in the next month you see more of these same exact flowers to all the other male members of the envoy. Because her family is looking to live as luxuriously and lavishly and continue their reign over the planet by having as many "retired" envoy associates as possible. It wouldn't surprise me if even the females get pots sent from this family with her parents putting their own flowers in them to call her back home. All for the pensions. Because like you said, politics is still a business. And everything still comes down to the money.” He answered. 

“Oh. I see. So she outranks you, therefore you have to obey her wishes and demands?” You gathered. 

“Pretty much. I'll probably get to spend the rest of my days at her family's palatial estate. With our own familial section added onto it. And my parents will most likely pay "less" in produce. To do business at the markets. This pot is unique to my family. The male’s family will make pots. It’s the female’s family that grow the flowers associated with their family. I was hoping that I could just…stay here. And at least…send any retirement to my family. Because it’s my family that grows the very melons that are so “desireable” elsewhere. But we need the funds of the sales of the melons to support us here because Tarek is still a business as much as it is a Federation Station. And you could spend an entire month’s allowance in a day’s worth of extravagance. Which is why we try to keep our extravagance down and attend other’s social functions but don’t host our own simply because can’t afford to.” He admitted. 

“Does your bride want you and only you or will she be happy with any person in the envoy? As long as they have the same pension you would?” You asked him. 

“I don’t know. But the fact that it’s her family’s flower in my family’s pot means that they settled the arrangement for me. Which, all things considered, I should be grateful.” He admitted lowly, but his tone was still quite resentful and rather hateful.

“Well I have a few options for you if you want to hear them.” You offered as you took the pot back to examine exactly what it could be made out of and if you could smash it on something, particularly a floor where there were automatic cleaners that would clear away the dirt and debris from the pot and most of the dirt, save for the plant. 

“What other options could there be?” He asked in a defeated tone. 

“Well that depends on your answers to my questions. Number 1- do you have any affection for this woman other than the fond memories you had of her as a child?” You asked. 

“No.” He answered. 

"Have you had any communications with her while you have been here, saying that you're looking forward to retiring and coming home to her?" You asked.

"No." He shook his head no.

"Did you say anything to her before you even left that it would only be a three month tour and you'd be right back for her?" You asked.

"No. I didn't even get a goodbye. Just a 'good luck' from her family. We're practically strangers now as adults." He answered.

“Ok. And if say..I had “accidentally” dropped this vase in the hangar and hadn't put it in it's own protected cylinder. And it shattered and you never saw that it was your family’s pot. But I did “all I could” to save the flower itself and once I deliver the flower to the rest of the envoy, if any of them want to claim it as coming from their families. I could always go back to your homeworld with them, explain that I was the one who accidentally dropped it and because of my super harsh gravity, it broke before anyone could really see it and our cleaning system cleared up all evidence of the pot and the rest of the dirt itself before I could really get a good look at it myself." You began.

"I have authority to make things disappear in my own inventory. I've done before and I can easily and readily do it again. Or I can make the description of this item so vague, no discernable details could be made of it. And see if anyone else from the envoy wants her. And sadly break the news to your parents that you didn’t get to see it and didn’t think you had any relationships with anyone back on your homeworld that would warrant such a thing. But that you’re perfectly happy and content being here as your envoy’s food gatherer or whatever your title is- a bit longer. It’s perfectly clear to me that you don’t want to go and that you don’t even like, much less love this political latinum digger who’s more after your pension than she is you as a person or your personality. And she clearly doesn’t have any emotional attachment or affection for you. So she can suck my dick if she thinks that with a flower she can snap her fingered- whatever- and have you come running to her beck and call. That’s bullshit. “So you want me to stay?” Seshi asked as he pulled away long enough for you to try to catch your breath. 

“Yes. As long as you can stand it. I don’t care what I have to do or what I have to pay or any consequences I have to endure. But I love you. You are the only one in the fifteen years I’ve been doing this that has ever actually cared about me and expressed any kind of interest in me because everyone else is all business but with you it’s…it’s personal and I don’t want you to go. I’ve become too attached to….mph.” You professed before he pinned you harder to his bed and kissed you as his other appendages began to undress you and himself.

“Wait. Just wait a minute.” You began when you knew where this was going. And as much as you wanted to fuck his brains out, you still had his Ambassador to deal with who knew the truth and could blow this for you and Seshire. 

“Why?” He asked. 

“Because of your reaction to it, I showed it to your Ambassador. And I know you have to wait for the next alignment to transmit your data stream. And I know your Ambassador will want to use that time to select your replacement and offer her congratulations. So I have to make it worth her while to claim that she never saw it and that we never had our conversation and see if anyone else in the envoy wants to take your place. And it’s in less than an hour. I have to go and destroy this pot and try to save the flower to keep you here. Can you wait for me to do all that first before we pick up where we are leaving off right now?” You asked. 

“I’ll wait as long as I need to.” He readily agreed as you could see it in the patterns of his skin that he was happy and delighted. 

“Perfect. Give me like 15 minutes ok?” You urged him before you took the plant put it back into the cart and drove it as fast as it could back to the hanger before you went into the bathroom with the cylindar and “accidentally” took it out, only to see the flower immediately wilt under your normal gravity.

You threw it as hard as you could onto the floor and smiled victoriously when the vase shattered into a million pieces and you picked up the flower and it’s little root system and enough of the dirt to put it back into the mini- anti-gravity cylinder and pressed the button for the bathroom to clean itself to get rid of all the "evidence". Then you got your own hoverboard that allowed you to race back to the Ambassador’s quarters with that cylinder and the flower and it's soil and it's still intact root system- a whole five minutes before the alignment would be in position for a data transmission. 

“Emily…what in…” The Ambassador’s eyes went wide when she saw the flower with it’s root system in the cylinder but not the pot. 

“There’s been a horrible accident. You see, according to my records, this item, "a plant in a pot" from Cepha 4 didn’t really have any other identifiable marks about what it was or who it was intended for. So I’m here to see if anyone else is willing to claim it and anything and everything else that comes with it." You explained with a meaningful look and emphatic tone which caused the Ambassador to tilt her head curiously at your choice of words.

"And I will of course offer my deepest and most sincere apologies to whoever really did send it for breaking the surprisingly delicate and fragile pot it came in. That unfortunately, due to my clumsiness in the bathroom at the hangar. I accidentally knocked out of the protective anitgravity cylinder. I did all I could to save the flower though. So I was hoping in order to make amends both to you, and to your envoy’s families back on Cepha 4, for any unintentional mixup that might occur should this flower actually go to someone else in your envoy that wants it and not to Seshire who was not expecting or wanting it. Much less anything having to do with any customs or traditions that it may be tied to." You tried to "discretely" explain.

"And because I am human after all, one of the many species native to Earth which is notoriously known as a death planet and also a species known to form unbelievably strong pack bonds with friends who may be in closer relationships than with their own family members. Which I have since formed with Seshire. And so since he does not want to leave and return home. What can I do to help him stay and continue to serve you in his official capacity here on Tarek Nor? Or anywhere else in the Federation both you and he may be stationed at? You know my company offers insurance policies and I will happily pay out said insurance policies to whoever is owed them, both to you, to the rest of your envoy as well as the parties back on Cepha 4.” You proposed to Ambassador Lashi who was trying to stamp down her grin that threatened to bloom over her face before she cleared her throat. 

“I see, that is an unfortunate accident. Let me call the rest of my staff in. Surely one of them would be happy to accept it. My accountant most of all.” She offered before she signaled for all of her staff to come into the room.

You repeated the story you made up for Seshi’s benefit to them and almost all of them were very eager to accept it when they saw the bloom before it was time for the data stream and the Ambassador’s communication channel began to ding like crazy from multiple people. She put them all on the same screen before they all saw you holding the flower in the cylinder without it’s pot and all the other families grew excited except for Seshire’s family who looked mortified. 

“Hello everyone. My name is Emily Stardrift. I’m one of the co-owners of Intergalactic Foods Unlimited. And unfortunately, there was an accident today. You see, this is the first time I’ve every had anything like this come with the shipments from your world so I put it in this special cylinder before I could deliver it to the Ambassador who could tell me if it belonged to her or was meant for another in the envoy. And unfortunately, the hub in which I work in- mimics my homeworld of Earth. I don’t know if any of you have heard of it. But it’s gravity is six times stronger than that of your homeworld." You began to explain to everyone.

"And I was just taking off a layer of clothing and the sleeve of my jacket just happened to push this beautiful flower out and the pot it was put in- out of the cylinder’s hold. And so because I do not wish to be the cause of an international, much less an intergalactic incident. I was able to save the flower but the pot it was in- was beyond saving. And my records about the pot itself are very vague other than the size and shape of the pot. I don’t even think we had a color down for what color the pot was or if there was any kind of special pattern. Which in the future, I will have to put into my systems special catagories to describe things like this. Since I've come to understand that the pot was actually just as important as the flower itself. Again, my deepest and most sincere of apologies for that." You offered as genuinely as you could to everyone on her screen.

"So I’ve brought the flower to the Ambassador and apologized for my clumsy mistake however there are five other members of the Ambassador’s envoy that claim that it was intended for them. Which I’d be more than happy to buy five more of them so they can each have one if they wish to. But I would also like to pay whoever sent it- their due recompense for damaging a gift they sent. But unfortunately, what this flower and it’s pot wasn’t listed for anything beyond what our normal insurance is- are when we insure our cargo to make sure it makes it to it’s destination.” You explained. 

“Well how much is the insurance?” Seshire’s parent’s asked.  

“Well usually that depends on what it is. But the norm is usually a thousand Federation credits is the standard, but that usually depends on the artisan who made the pot and the kind of flower that planted in the pot. So since the flower was able to be saved, I will be paying whoever was responsible for putting the flower in the pot just in case my clumsiness endangered such a gorgeous bloom. But because of the total damage of the pot. The pay out could be much higher." You offered which made them blink in surprise. Because usually that's what each melon was worth in the market on Astris.

"I as well as everyone else in our business knows that more special or sentimental items could be deemed priceless. And we do carry and deliver the centerpieces that have food in them to the summits. And those things are integral to the summit meetings. So obviously those are insured for at least ten thousand federation credits." You explained before such a price seemed to put dollar signs in Seshire's bride to be's eyes and it seemed to give Seshire's parent's pause because such a sum could set them up for years to come.

"We also know that some of our senders may not have enough credits to insure special items for more value than they appear to be or that they can afford to insure it for as well. So please, let me make this right. Because the fault for the damage is mine and mine alone. And I will pay for my mistake out of my personal accoutns if I must. But I absolutely insist on making this right- so that all parties involved are satisfied. So- so far the Ambassador has explained the cultural significance that this very beautiful flower means. But I also understant that the vessel that contained it also had quite the significance as well. And since that was accidentally destroyed beyond all recognition. I understand from the paperwork. That while you paid for this to be added to the shipment. I didn’t know if it was intended for Seshire or if it was simply a gift from you to any of his other close freinds and I believe family members among the envoy. So please, tell me what I can do to make this up to you.” You offered. 

“Bring Seshire home. Because that was a marraige flower arangement that we have made for him since his tour of being with the Ambassador is at it’s end.” His mother insisted as you grimaced. 

“Well, that’s too bad. You see Seshire comes with me to Earth’s surface quite a bit to peruse my family’s market- Astris, which is it’s home base for the entire Intergalactic Foods Unlimited Corporation, it's our own headquarters. And I’m the first hieress to that business. But I also serve my parent’s company by managing the central hub for the Federation Station Tarek Nor and I personally fill the order of your Ambassador as well as all the other orders for all the other Ambassadors." You began apologetically.

"And our professional relationship is quite close and it’s because of that close relationship that I’m able to sell the excess produce you send to both suppliment the Ambassador’s income from incendential expendatures which for this space station- for what the entire Ambassador and their entire envoy get- could esaily be spent in only a few hours but the Ambassador and the entire envoy have been so frugal to make it strech as much as they can. But that is only because Seshire has helped me market your own produce as much as I can and have been able to find replacements for items that are much cheaper and hold similar nutritional value in their diet." You continued.

"I understand that your family grows the shishi melons, which I’ve had the honor to try. Is there another market that we can showcase the produce in that would earn your family the equivolent of what he would be making in his retirement? Because I’ve talked to Seshire and he doesn’t wish to retire at this time. Seshire has become a very good friend of mine and it’s because he has been responsible for supplimenting the diet of the ambassador and the rest of the envoy." You added.

"But I understand that the living conditions here on Terek Nor are especially brutal especially for your species. And Sehsire has actually thrived despite the difficulty and has risen to the challenge. Something that two thirds of the original party could not do. Which is why you have the pension plan in place from the Federation. And why the tours are as short as they are. In fact I’m sure you’re not the only family who could benefit from such a change of circumstances, provided that no one on your world goes hungry just because your foods are coveted by others. For I do not wish to deprive anyone on your homeworld their birthright to the very foods that are native to the homeworld. Because food is a divine right by all the natives of any world they hail from.” You offered in your best and most respectful diplomatic tone. 

“Actually as his potential bride. It does not matter to me if he accepts it or not. If he wishes to stay there in the extreme circumstances and will serve our intergalactic political needs by caring for our Ambassador, then I’m happy to release him from the arrangement my family has made with his, provided that we get reimbursed by that insurance policy for the flower and the pot. So I will accept any other who is willing to take his place.” She piped up.

And while you could see her indifference, and the other’s happiness and elation, and Seshire’s relief. You could still see his family’s dissappointment that they would not be getting the advantages they thought they would be. Then Seshire left and took his own call in his room from his parents as he left his ex fiance and all their parents to discuss who would be best suited to be her mate as you promised that you’d be also paying a fee for unintentional break in her previous engagement that the vase represented, which she was more than happy to recieve. Especially when you offered her three times the price you quoted his parents previously. Being three thousand Federation credits. Which only made the other members of the envoy that much more eager to accept the percived fortune for accepting the flower and it’s intended meaning and traditions and responsibilities as you made the notes in the pad to send the “official incident report” in your business interface and immediately set up the claim and immediately paid it out. Three thousand to his ex fiance. And three thousand to the Ambassador for accepting the change and three thousand for each of her envoy members. Which was way more than they got from the Federation for incidental expenses. And all the parties were elated when they immediately got those credits deposited into their accounts electronically. And were happy to fill out the questionaire that you handled this incident either up to or exceeding their expectations which you were happy to have.

Then you handed the flower off to the ambassador to go after Seshire who openned the door for you the moment he spotted you in the hall from his own correspondance interface that showed him the image viewer from his parents as he was completely unclothed because his species “talked” faster and easier by the almost dizzying array of colors and patterns they showed on thier skin. And while you knew what a few of them meant. So you told him that for the “severance” his parents would be “suffering” for his absense, that you would match it and then surpasss it by 200% more. In effect tripling it with the added bonus of no more melons needed or required. Which was an expense you could very easily afford.

And once he seemed to “communicate” that with his parents, suddenly his own coloring slowed down and the colors became much more pleasant in appearance- before they seemed pleased.

So you officially sent the correspondance to your business interface that they’d accept the full insurance payout for the broken vase itself. And especially once you put in the communication as to why you were paying them so much more because of the “cultural significance” and the “life altering affects” that such damage that you "unwittingly inflicted", and “unintentionally” caused them. They were more than happy to accept it and happily agree that Seshire served his family, his community and his people best right where he was on the space station with his aunt as the Ambassador. And that payment came with the added bonus of his first "severance" payment with it that they'd be getting once a month for as long as Seshire was here. While also filing an incident report with the Federation on Seshire's behalf and explained what had "happened" and how you had resolved it but that Seshire and the rest of the envoy needed raises because of how harsh the living conditions were that they endured without complaint. Which most Ambassadors did nothing but complain. But because it came from you- and the special relationship you and most importantly your very vital job with the Federation. The Federation kinda always had a 'whatever this family wants, they get'- kind of thing. Because of the whole 'don't bite the hand that feeds you' rule. Literally.

So the Federation was quick to rectify the situation so that Lashi and her envoy could properly have all the same "functions" that any other Ambassador did.

Which meant, Seshire was all yours. And your smile of happiness was nearly blinding as you did a little happy dance on his ceiling.

The moment they were out of aligment and the data stream ended. He immediately jumped from the floor up to the cieling to be with you to actually pick up where you had left off.

A song written on March 1, 2002 on the bus. I was on my way to the studio to record the vocals for this musical composition I had been dragging around for several months. All music tracks we’re recorded. I had the chorus melody in mind ( ... and I would never have to suffer) without being able to put words into it. I would then hum this phrase because once I had found the lyrics, I would no longer have to suffer,, as a joke. The final lyrics were written in the last 10 minutes of the ride when I had to find something to sing when I arrived. I was then all alone on the long busride, felt like a desert. Nothing was touched again once recorded. I figured if Debbie Harry had dropped her amazing One Way to Another hidden in the bathroom at the last minute, my Desert would do the job for a demo. “Plastic recyclers are like ghosts, but we do vital work”

The UN is negotiating this week in Nairobi a new global treaty[1] to manage the enormous plastic problem. John Chweya, leader of Kenya's waste pickers, demands that representatives of the world's 20 million garbage workers be heard.

After this interview, John Chweya (Kisumu, Kenya, 33 years old) goes directly to the UN headquarters, with the same boots and the same red work overalls in which he spent the morning moving around the main Dandora landfill, in Nairobi[2]. In this giant garbage dump of more than 12 hectares where 8,000 people work, these rainy days in the capital of Kenya, the soil is a mixture of plastic and mud in which the pigs search for scraps of food. And recyclers search through smoking mountains of waste for something to resell, sometimes without boots, always without gloves, because, one explains, they hinder the search. Even if they wanted to use them, they don't have them either.

Chewya, who has worked at the landfill in his hometown since he was 12 years old and today leads the Kenyan recyclers association (with 40,000 members)[3], does not believe in disguises to mingle with legislators in the hallways where this week the international community is debating a great global treaty against plastics. Some 20 million people like him work around the world sorting plastic, cans or glass in places where there are no public garbage collection services, most without guarantees of safety or earning enough to eat. “We have to sit at the table in the negotiations,” claims Chweya, in front of a huge pile of used bottles.

The one being negotiated these days in Nairobi is, according to the United Nations, the most important multilateral treaty since the Paris international agreement against climate change. The resulting text – after the Kenya conference there will be two more in 2024 – will regulate the entire life, from manufacturing to the landfill (or the sea), of more than 400 million tons of plastic that the planet generates each year. Chwewa is well aware that the world is increasingly producing more plastic. “When he worked at the garbage dump, as a child, there were a lot of returnable containers. Today plastic is everywhere, even to wrap fruit in the supermarket,” he laments. And it is a plastic that is often not recycled, like 91% of that produced in the world.

Question: How do you remember your beginnings working with garbage?

Answer: My family lived from the second-hand clothing trade. One day, the market where my mother sold burned and we lost everything. We had taken out credits to pay for the merchandise, so we ended up in a situation where we couldn't afford even two meals a day. My six brothers and I had to make a living. I ended up collecting metal at the Kisumu landfill because plastic, at that time, was not worth much. They paid me seven shillings (four euro cents) per kilo, sometimes less.

Q.: And what is the day-to-day life of a recycler today in Kenya?

A.: I get up at five. The earlier you start, the more chances you have of finding recyclables, and the more hours, the more kilos of plastic and the more money. I collect trash from homes. Other recyclers work on the streets, and others here, in landfills. What is most complicated for all of us is that the intermediaries—who sell to recycling companies—impose prices that change every day, so we are trying to organise ourselves to carry out collective negotiations.

Q.: What do recyclers expect from this plastics treaty?

A.: This agreement must recognise the vital role of recyclers in fixing the world's plastic pollution problem. In an ideal situation, the extended producer responsibility  principle[4] [whereby the packaging producer takes responsibility for the environmental and social impact of the waste) would absorb the recyclers, and we would receive payment for our work. We have a historic role, because, the truth is, the plastic that companies have already produced will continue to be in our environment for the next 100 years. And we continue producing.

Q.: How do you feel in those halls of the UN these days?

A.: It is a devastating feeling. I enter and find delegates debating policies that affect my colleagues without being clear about our realities. Most of them have not been here [he points to the landfill]. Coming changes the perspective of what the treaty means.

Q.: You are the invisible face of plastic, let's say.

A.: We still suffer a lot of social stigma, some believe that, because we could not access to an education, we are a danger or we do not have knowledge. And governments do not recognise and support our work enough. We are like ghosts, but we do vital work. It happens all over Africa.

Q.: Do you think the conversation about the environment and climate change is elitist?

A.: Yes, to some extent. That's why I think legislators have to come here, to the dump. They don't know our reality. Furthermore, these debates have to be guided by knowledge. And we recyclers have that knowledge. We work with plastic, we know it, we feel its effects. We literally live among plastics.

Q.: What are some concrete requests from recyclers to politicians?

A.: First, that recyclers receive payment for their work instead of having to sell their stuff individually. Also they need to guarantee their safety and health. Here you can see plastic burning and people who breathe it every day have respiratory diseases. We are cut when gathering by glass, with syringes. There are suspicions of cancer, women - many work at the landfill because it is physically less demanding than collecting garbage on the street - suffer hormonal alterations... For these 8,000 Dandora recyclers, for example, we have obtained only 500 protective equipment .
