i truthfully know next to nothing about fish but i love seeing u talk about it pls tell us more about the fish you wanna get i'm fascinated
GOOSSSSH yes i would love to!!!!!!!
so the breed that i want is a ryukin goldfish, specifically a longtail ryukin!! they've got rly round bodies and gorgeous fins!! this is the one im looking at rn >:)
Tumblr media
they're very very lovely and im very very excited. for a fancy goldfish, it's relatively hardy (which is sometimes rare for fancy goldfish) and thrives at room temp or lower, which is nice!!!
it's recommended tank size is 10 gallons, which will probably be the tank i get unless i can manage to squeeze a 15 gallon into the space i have!! ideally, i'd like to get it as big a tank as possible so that it can be as healthy as possible. they're pretty big (this one is six inches) and can grow up to 8 inches or larger depending on tank size. but i just don't think i'll have the space to swing a 20 gallon tank as much as i'd like one (i could also put another fish in the tank, maybe another ryukin).
i plan to use synthetic plants since ryukin do well with them and they tend to dig up live plants. im gonna do soft decor too since their fins can be delicate and i dont wanna risk them getting injured. gonna go with natural colors though just because i prefer them!!!! still gotta pick out a tank and filter setup tho, so that's prob next on my list before decorations haha
n im gonna keep the tank on my desk so that i can hang out with miss fish while im animating!!!

i did too much reading on everything happening & petitions and now i literally cant see so im finally writing another garden update
its been a long time since i wrote one of these so a decent amount has changed in my garden! ive also taken full inventory of all my plants so ill list them and their changes/harvest below
ALSO ALSO ALSO i put this at the end because thats when i remembered it but this is so important! i got a lemon tree!! its about 2-3 feet tall and only cost like $40 which is astoundingly good for a tree of that size. its an improved meyer and it wasn’t organic but seeing as it will probably be 1-4 years before it bears fruit (i dont know its age, just going off size) i dont think that will matter too much. i put it in i think an 8 or 10 gallon pot on my back porch and i love it so much :’) i wanna get another each year until i have like 4 because i love lemons & would use them so much if i could afford it. anyway onto the rest of the post
jalenpeno: i have 4. 2 have peppers on them rn. I recently moved three of them to different parts of the garden because they clearly werent getting enough sun
haberno: i have 1, with 2 peppers on it. they’re fairly big but still green. they’ve been there awhile tho so im hoping to harvest soon
beans: 4 from seeds that have flowers (and one bean) and four from seedlings that we harvested beans from yesterday!
bell pepper: 1 that seems happy but isnt producing. likely isn’t getting enough light
shishito: 1 that i harvested 1 pepper from yesterday, and has another at about 2 inches with two very small ones as well.
hungarian hot wax: 1 that i harvested the single pepper from yesterday. i tried out slicing it and using it as a topping and enjoyed the heat but found the flavour lacking, so i won’t be replanting.
okra: 1 that seems fine but isn’t producing.
peas: 4 from seeds. one is dying already, the other three are fine but they were planted & grew to late to really produce.
chives: 5, one from seeds. SOMETHING keeps munching on them so i really need to get garden cages.
1 oregeno, that I’ll probably harvest from soon. its not getting taller but its really spreading out so i think it might be ready soon.
2 different sage. im letting them get big so i can harvest and dry entire stems.
2 thyme, that i need to research to see if its time to harvest yet
3 different variety of basil, some with flowers, that i just did a good amount of harvesting from yesterday and my mom made pesto with today! havent tried it yet tho
2 chamomile. the one in the shade was doing so much better i relocated the one out front to where one of my jalenpenos was and its already gotten bigger after just two days. need to look into harvesting those soon and seeing what i can make! im not a tea person but im trying to get into aroma stuff and essential oils for relaxation.
my tomato has some tiny tomatoes as well as flowers
the lemongrass has gotten BIG which is great but also its got the papercut kind of blades so its becoming a bit of a hazard. luckily its in the corner of my garden. i need to look into harvesting it soon.
2 cilantro, one we waited too long to harvest because it was doing poorly so it bolted. we harvested from both yesterday so hopefully it can recover but unknown rn. i have the cilantro tastes like establishmentism genes but my moms excited.
both zuchini died, but i hate zuchini so thats fine (they were my moms). we moved the jalenpenos to where they used to be.
1 scallop squash, 1 butternut squash, and 1 deli cata squash. theyve all flowers numerous times but only one ever got a baby squash, that then fell off the next day while watering. something tried to eat the deli cata the other day (GARDEN CAGES) and idk yet if its going to survive.
1 watermelon, that has grown a LOT and is getting quite the vine going. no production yet tho.
and my lavender, outside the garden but getting quite big! it had two of its three flower stems break but i taped them back together and they seemed to have recovered fine!

Hi I’m in college and thinking about getting a betta. I was wondering what youd recommend me getting or give me like a list of what all I need. I plan on using tank about 2.5 gallons.
hey there @merelivia :D sorry it took me so long to reply this post is a great starting point! :) there are probably a few things missing from the supplies list i included in that post (i really gotta update that post), so here’s a more accurate one!- 2.5+ gallon tank (the bigger the better tho! a 5.5 gallon is a good minimum to start with imo…and it’s easier to keep a stable cycle with!)  you can buy an all-in-one tank like the fluval spec or the top fin glass tank, a starter kit (usually 5 gallon kits don’t come with heaters, but some 10 gallon kits do), or buy all of the items separately.- filter (after having HOBs, built-in filters, and sponge filters…sponge filters are my fave .-. but built-in filters like the fluval spec’s and top fin glass tank’s are 2nd fave). if you get a hob, you may need a baffle! if you get a tank with a built-in filter, you may need to buy a sponge to slip over the out-spout.– How sponge filters work + how to set them up– Pros + cons of sponge filters -heater (76-82F) i have three of these heaters and they’re great! the cords are really short tho, thats the big downside :T this post has a ton of other heater suggestions!-thermometer glass ones are my personal fave, and way more accurate than the sticker kind. i think theyre 1-2$ at walmart!- 1+ hide (caves, terra cotta pots, an ornament, just a place where they can hide out or chill in)- decor (lots of decor ideas listed below!)- silk/live plants (plastic isn’t the best idea since plastic plants can tear a betta’s delicate fins)– craft mesh “betta beds”– dollar store flowers (remove wire, soak to make sure they don’t bleed)- pvc, terra cotta pot, mug, glass, jar hides (your cabinet, goodwill, dollar store)– dollar store betta tanks– diy decor– craiglist, facebook marketplace, offerup, letgo, etc. BE HUNTIN!– petco’s plants are bogo rn (i thought they were buy one get one free, but my receipt tells me they’re buy one get one 50% off…either way its a win~)– petco and petsmart usually have plants and supplies for sale on their website but not in the store. if you show the cashier the online price, they’ll match it at the checkout so make sure to do some online window shopping before you go! – hobby lobby and micahaels have a ton of their floral stuffs on sale right now as well!- quality food i like new life spectrum thera +a pellets (long name, i know, but i know u can buy them at petco!) or omega one pellets or the betta buffet flakes. frozen foods like blood worms and shrimp are also good additions to a betta’s diet :)- test kit this kit is my favorite! the value is faaaantastic and the tests give more specific readings than the strips :p- lid bettas can be jumpers so lids are recommended. if your tank doesn’t come with a lid or is an odd shape and you can’t buy one, then craft mesh may be good option! it’s really cheap at walmart or craft stores and you can cut it with regular scissors. it’s basically plastic mesh…you can weigh it down or create a frame for it since it’s pretty light ^-^- light if you don’t buy a kit that comes with a hood+light combo, or any light at all…you’ll probably need one! leds are a good choice :) i just bought 2 of these nicrew lights and they work amazingly! definitely bright enough for at least medium light plants and super white~ you can also buy clip-on LED with a gooseneck like this one (tho i’d be sure to check the measurements on lights as cheap as these!) or even a light from home depot~ for a tank that small, you could also use a desk lamp. with a desk lamp you could probably grow low-light plants like anacharis and anubias. when i had a little planted vase on my desk, i just went to goodwill and got one for $3 ^-^”- water change bucket it’ll make water changes so much easier. one of the best $3 investments i’ve ever made. you can get 5.5 gallon buckets at walmart and home depot :p- aquarium siphon (also called a gravel vac) helps remove water during a water change and can suck up gunk from the substrate- water conditioner i love seachem prime! If you’ve never had fish before, these posts might also be helpful!General Fishkeeping + Equipment:Fishkeeping 101“Seeding” a tank Why do we do water changes? Anonymous ask: do you have any pets? What are their names? Why do you keep them? What got you into keeping them? Do you have any future pet plans? 💖💖
Ok anon do u really wanna get into this convo? Itll take a while.
Okay so im at college so rn the only pets with me are my fishb a male halfmoon plakat named Cosmos Florence the second, a nerite snail named Nertb and a black mystery named Onyx. I keep them because god man i just. I just love em so much ya know? Its like. I have this little ball of hate and rage in my dorm who has such a beautiful personality and then to complement that i have these chill snaild who r just trying really hard. Back home we have even more pets and oh man oh man i love them?? They are what love and joy looks like?? We have my dogs, cat, turtle, lizards, birds, hairless guinea pigs, fish, and chickens.
The chickens are named Short Bread and Oreo bevause of how they looked when they were younger. Oreo is a little spunkyer that Short bread while i think short bread is a little…. Confused? Yeah just generally confused by everything.
We have Mr. T, our full grown, healthy red ear slider who lives in a small pond in the back yard with a few feeder fish he never ate. Those fish have grown to be his pals and he just. Hase never eaten them.
Then we have the birds, Able, who likes to tell at you if u look at her to long. Her hobbys are chewing through toys as she is hanging from them and being suprised when she falls. We then have Birbank, named after the airport my dad found him at, who lives very closely with his bf Ruby. Birbank is a grey and white cockatiel and Ruby is a green Indian Ringneck. They had being more than 2 feet apart for longer than 2 seconds and often u will find Ruby yelling when Birbank flys somewhere he cant go (ruby doesnt know how to fly) and birbank screaming when he realises the mistake he made. Ruby likes to give people kisses and is a lover, not a fighter. Birbank likes to hiss at peanuts and ignore everything besides Ruby. Next we have our Canary, Mango whos fav food is blue berrys and kale. He likes to sing when he hears trumpets and my flute. He has a club foot so when we adopted him the bird rescue we got him from was relived because no one else would take him. He is the most graceful flying bird i have ever seen! Finally we have the zebra finch named Shimmy. When we first adopted him he had a super bad plucking problem and was almost completly bald but hes doing much better now, aggressivly peeping when he hears the canary.
Okay now we have 2 lizards, a leopard gecko named Romeo and a crested gecko named Gargoyle. Romeo is a sweet boi with a chubby tail who loves his crickets fast and his meal worms slow. He has one of those reptile hammocks but he prefers climding his cave more. Gargoyle is a sweet girl who will only eat her food when it starts to harden again for some reason. We dont know why but she does and shes kinda a butt. But ya gotta love her!
Our cat’s name is Figaro and she’s currently bald. She had to get shaved, the vet said shes getting up in her years so when she stopped grooming for a month and got matts in her long fur they said she had basicly cat arthritis. Shes doing good and her hobbies are (well atleast when i was home) meowing in my mouth at 3 am to tell me she ate all her food and wanted more.
Wr have 5 dogs so just get ready for that. All our dogs but 1 is a rescue. Coal is a chow/black lab mix. She was adopted as a pup from a local animal rescue and she kniws the mist tricks. Shes a good girl who likes hugs, treats, and when u massage her face. Her favorite toy is a yellow stick that she will bring to you when asked. Shes the second youngest! Lily is the youngest, i sometiems call her satan but only because she is a trickster! You will turn around and shell be on the table eating food, stealing anything from coal, and trying to think up world domination. She and Coal are super close, when we got her Coal went all MaMa dog and now they are inseparable. What makes it better is that Lily is a half Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix so shes tiny next to Coal. Our third youngest is Scarlet, wr think shes the product of a long hair Chihuahua and a deer head Chihuahua. Shes a primadonna who enjoys her alone time and pets. She also like to be held, mainly like a baby so u can hold her and tub her tum. She also REALLY LIKES CAR RIDES like man even going to the vet shes jazzed. Second oldest is Vinnie, a pug my bro ham adopted. Hes super sweet and good he likes face squishes and whrn he naps his tail uncurles. He stands very proper like hes a gentleman and likes to sit on ur feat. He has a grain allergy so he eats special grain free food. Next we have the oldest of our dogs MY SWEET BABY GIRL GIGI. shes my sun and moon. We got gigi when i was 8 and when i was 10 my sister went to college, leaving her for me to takr care of. And well, shes literally the most important thing in the world to me. My sister got her from a breader (which i dont like cus dogs in shelters need homes) but shes a Brussels Griffon so the breader croped her ears and tail. I DO NOT CONDONE THE PRACTICE OF CROPPING AND PART OF A DOG UNLESS SUGGESTED BY A VET, SOME DOGS GET THEIR TAILS CROPPED BECAUS ETHEY BREAK BONES IN THEM AND THAT IS THE ONLY CROPPING I CONDONE. Her ears were cropped lopsidedb and improperly which brought many problems to her later on. She developed many ear infections that have caused her to scratch her ears until they bleed, has had medication for 3 different ear infections, and has almost no ear canal left. Her vet has told us she is almost deef. Also as she got older she got chronic dry eye and takes medicated eye drops for it but shes fine as long as she has those. She needs loud or sharp sounds to get her attention so i trained her to respond to clapping, whistling (which i do very loudly) and snapping fingers. She is a sweet heartb adn a super velcro dog! I cried for three days after i had to go to college and they drive her up to visit me. When im home she goes looking for me if im out of site for 2 minutes, will wait at the bathroom door for me, stare up the stairs when i go to shower, and press her face against closed doors she knows i went through. Whne she does the last thing i have to drum my fingers on the door so she knows to move back before i open it. I miss her horribly and i skype her almost every day, she gets super excited! The first few days i was gone she actually wouldnt stop barking at night. Shes also a cuddle baby and she doesnt sleep unless she is touching me ao it was probably rough for her. I miss her but ill be able to see her in october when i go to my sisters wedding.
The fish! Okay so my mother has a 75 gallon gold fish aquarium and a 30 gallon in the garage with nithing in it yet (shes thinking tetras). The gold fish tank has 2 butter fly tails and some bristle nose plecos. It also has many a snail rn! A friend of ours dismantled a large aquarium of his own ( he is going through a very hard time financially and im hoping everything works out for him) and gave us the plecos and snails. The snails are 3 rabbit snailsb one nerite (he gave us 2 but the other is with my betta) a few black mysteries, and a golden apple who i named Big Mama.
Lemme tell u about big mama real fast. I call her this because, first of all shes a full grown golden appleb second of all because shes a mama. He had a live planted tank thich included a moss ball he has been taking care of for 5 year, its the size of my head and when we put it in the 75 gallon it because the main pice of the tank. What we found out later was that Big Mama had made her family in ut and we have abou 20 BABY GOLDEN APPLES IN THERE ALONE!! He also gave us an anibius fern which i put in my betta’s tank and after getting to college and living hear for a few weeks i found out there were eggs on it because I KNOW HAVE MANY A BABY GOLDEN APPLE. these ones tho r much smaller than the moss ball ones, mine being hatchlings and those being the size of a finger nail. But anyway they have grown large enough where i can tell they r not pest snails and i will be rehoming them to other fish keepers in my dorms once they get a little bigger.
My mom has 3 hairless guinea pigs. Did you know that at petco people tend to walk in and drop off pets they “just dont want any more”? Well it hapoens a lot and my mom fell in love with them instantly. We have Billy, the oldest, Piggy, the middle in age, and sweet baby Bear who is small and young. They are all good boys and are doing very well so far in their new home! My mom had already owned billy and was looking into getting him friends, (guinea pigs live friends! They actually should be kept in atleast pairs but we were not aware at first, now we know better) all three of them are being slowly introduced! Bear and Piggy already live together but we dont want to rush this process and put billy right into the mix, that would probably be the worst think. They are slowly beibg acclimated to eachother.
I guess you could say i love pets because they are sweet and wonderful. I keep most of them because i know i can care for them, that i have the space, and the resources. I have the time and the will to foster a loving home for all my pets, and so does my family. Animals are a big part of my life and i love all of them with all my heart.
My future plans? Well nothing soon! Im in a dorm so Cosmos and his snail friends are all ivr got planed rn. But i hope to, onece in the distante future, get a tank with a school of danionella dracula in it, they are tiny fishb only getting half an inch in side. But id need a good tank for them since they school about 12 and id like to do the whome thing live plants (i also want one of those rimless aquatiums hnnnnnnnngh) i hope to upgrade cosmos to a larger aquarium b currently hes in a 2.5 which is enough for a betta, sure, but id rather he be in a 5 gallon. But really? I just wanna go home n be with GiGi more than anything.
Thank you for the ask!

How to Wake Up Early at 4:30am Everyday and Like it!
Tumblr media
Updated December 6, 2017
Since I started my waking up early routine I constantly have friends and family asking me, “How do you wake up that early, six days a week? I could never do that!” They often just assume I am this weird morning person who pops out of bed with tenacious energy ready to go on a 100 cycling journey, or do backflips down the street.
I don’t wake up early because I am inherently a morning person. I wake up early because I want to maximize creativity, efficiency, and honestly I just take awhile to get going in the mornings. So, if I woke up at say 7:15am when I have to be to work by 8am, I probably would be late A LOT! I have developed a early morning routine to take control of my day!
Today I am going to let you in on my top 5 secrets to waking up early six days a week!
  1 ) Go to Bed Early/On Time
Now you might be thinking, “of course Ben. I could have figured that one out”. But how many times have you found yourself either bingeing on Netflix, social media, or my favorite past time Call of Duty. People crack jokes about these habits all the time, but it is NOT funny. You are wasting extremely valuable time that you will NEVER get back.
I like to get to bed before 10pm each day. Now if I am extra tired I try to hit the 9:30pm mark, or if my wife and I are out late with friends it lands around 10:30pm. You may be thinking “well that’s lame!”. But let me tell you, there is nothing lame about taking control of your day and accomplishing at least 2 hours of work and daily readings before anyone else even hits snooze. I like to get around 6 hours of sleep each night, so in order to do so I try and hit the 9:30 – 10:00pm mark!
2 ) Look Forward to the Reason You are Waking Up
Often when I hear someone saying they want to start developing a morning routine they say something to the effect of, “I am gonna get up at 4:30am, run 40 miles, and drink a gallon of strait carrot juice!”. Honestly that sounds AWFUL! I hate to run and I would never wake up at 4:30am to do so, that is grounds for disaster for me! Although I really enjoy riding my bicycle, but I would never do so at 4:30am. That is just not my jam!
Ok, to be fair, maybe this is what you would really really enjoy doing with your morning. My point is that you want to be sure you can sustain this morning routine. The best way to do this is by waking up and doing something you like to do.
I wake up each day and read the Bible, post a new article onto my Jobs in the Future, and prepare new articles and brain storm topics for the following day. It truly pulls me out of bed each morning because I LIKE TO DO SO!
My morning Routine:
Wake up by 4:30am
Brush Teeth
Stretch for 2-3 minutes (Very Important! gets my blood moving)
Drink 2 Cups of water from 4:30am – 6:30am (Big Berkey Water Filter)
Work on Jobs in the Future
Read the Bible (KJV –  the old school on I use)
Eat a Solid Breakfast with my wife: Egg and a Bowl of Oatmeal
Half Cup of Oats (Best Organic Oats)
One Banana
Half an Apple
3 Spoons fulls of Protein Powder (Best Protein Powder EVER Click Here!)
Some salt and cinnamon
Take my Vitamins! (Garden of Life Mens Code)
Off to work at the office…
NOTE: I actually don’t drink any caffeine till about 8:15am when I sit down at my desk at the office. (Proof that it is all about a solid routine not loads and loads of caffeine)
  3 ) Exercise Daily
This is something I heard a lot and I honestly did not want to do until I found a time that worked really well for me and I began to enjoy my daily exercise.
Each weekday I take 25 minutes before I go to lunch and I do a moderate fitness routine in my office. I lift 15 pound dumbbells, perform some strengthening exercises and stretch. All I am trying to do is re-energize my body, keep my strength up, and stay healthy! I am not looking to become the next Arnold Schwarzenegger, I just want to start alert and healthy!
My Workout Setup:
Nike Free Rn
Athletic Shorts
Random T-Shirt
Yoga Mat
15 LB Dumbbells
On the Weekends I go Cycling ( Brooks Leather Saddle )
4 ) Take a Day of Rest
Now this is absolutely the crucial aspect helping me to sustain a 4:30am daily wake up routine. I take one day off every week! Taking a day of rest not only is something I do in order to re-energize, but it is a part of my faith as a believer in Christ and the creator God. We have been instructed to work 6 days and rest the 7th and so I have decided to follow this command seriously and it has been very rewarding. I have energy, strength and inspiration on the days I wake up early!
On my day of rest, I TRULY REST! I sleep in till about 8am (which if you wake up at 4:30am daily this is sleeping in), I spend time with my family, attend our local church, take a bike ride occasionally, and almost always snag an hour nap (I never nap during the week).
#4 is very simple, yet highly effective! Many people might argue, You are wasting a WHOLE day of work and productivity, but I will argue that you have already got that time back by waking up early and working HARD the other six days! Take some rest!
Best books I have ever read on working hard:
Every Good Endeavor, by Tim Keller
So Good They Can’t Ignore You, by Cal Newport
5 ) Wake Up Early in 15 Minute Increments
This is the #1 most beneficial thing I have ever done. This is how I have been able to sustain waking early, consistently, for over 6 years. Say you want to wake up at 6:00am, but right now you sleep till 9:30am. You don’t want to just wake up at 6:00am for a couple of days, BURN OUT and then go back to your normal routine. That is why I recommend setting your alarm 15 minutes earlier each week to gradually reach your goal! I use to wake up around 9:30am everyday when I was in college and by the time I graduated I was waking up at 5:45am daily. I have now worked my way to 4:30am. sustainable consistency is the pathway to successfully rising early six days a week!
By doing this you will also program your body to wake up earlier naturally. I have found that over the years I usually wake up before my alarm even goes off. I end up using my alarm clock as a back up!
I Don’t rely on my phone! I use a super simple old school alarm clock just in case I don’t wake up a few minutes before my scheduled time:
RCA Digital Alarm Clock
Now if you want to get really high tech I would check out the Philips Wake Up Light. I have been wanting one of these for years!
Phillips Wake Up Light
So there you have it! If you have ever wondered how some of your friends get so much accomplished in a day, you now know it is all about the early morning routine!
Now that You are awake early it is time to maximize your productivity. How to increase your income with one hour of skill development per day!
  Final Notes:
It is really important to maintain a healthy diet to have sustainable energy throughout the day. I eat a lot organic fruits, sweet potatoes, peanut butter, unprocessed whole grain breads, drink about a gallon or more of water per day, and enjoy organic teas (Earl Grey is My favorite)
Please let me know if there is anything you do that helps you wake up early! I would love to hear your feedback!
  Until next time.

Jessica, this one’s for you! :)
i hope your son is enjoying his new fish <3 and glad your husband has found a job! hoping things continue to go well for you and your family <3
this post is a great starting point! :) there are probably a few things missing from the supplies list i included in that post (i really gotta update that post), so here’s a more accurate one! Since you already have your betta, this post might help you out more :) more under the ‘cut’/’read more’/’keep reading’! :)
Supplies
-2.5+ gallon tank the tank you have comes in a 1 and 2.5 gallon kit. The 1 gallon measurements are  7.5" x 7.5" x 10.25" and the 2.5 gallon measurements are  12.3" x 9.4" x 11.4". hopefully now you know which tank you have! the 1 gallon kit comes with a little bubbler (not a filter, just an aerator / air stone) and an under gravel filter (how effective under gravel filters are at holding a cycle is debated, but for now, don’t worry about that) and the 2.5 gallon kit comes with a filter (but it’s way too strong for a betta...it would have to be baffled).
if you have the 1 gallon kit (it looks like you’ve got the air stone, so probably the 1 gallon) you can get a sponge filter! however, in a tank so small, a stable cycle is hard to keep :/ in my opinion, you’d be best off spending 10 dollars on a 10 gallon tank (even if it is sparsely decorated) (rn at petco the 1$/gallon sale is going on so 10 gallon tanks are just $10!) first, before getting a filter. why, you ask? well, because if you only have 1 betta, waste will build up muuuch slower in a 10 gallon than in a 1 gallon and you could honestly probably get away with not having any filtration for a while...since the bioload (how much waste is produced by a fish) of 1 betta is so small...as long as you do large weekly water changes (at least 50% 1x a week). also, any heater (even those small 7.5watt ones, which are the lowest watt ones i’ve found) will be unsafe for a 1 gallon, mostly because the risk is pretty high for overheating the tank :/ with a 2.5+ gallon one, you could get an adjustable heater! these ones are great and the price is just as great! only downside is that they have short cords (i own 3...but its not an issue since all of my tanks are pretty darn close to their outlets) :/ think of waste (ammonia, which is toxic) building up like this: you’ve got 1 gallon of water and 10 gallons of water. in this analogy, colored drops (like food coloring or something) will represent your fish’s waste. let’s say you put 5 drops of coloring (waste) into the 1 gallon tank and 5 drops into the 10 gallon tank. the 1 gallon will be a lot darker right? because in the 10 gallon the color will be way more diluted! same goes for waste. (this is also why ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are measure in “ppm” or parts-per-million. it’s a proportion instead of an exact measurement: like 1/2 (proportion) vs of .25 inches (exact measurement) if that makes sense) - water conditioner it removes chlorines (some also remove chloramines and heavy metals) from the water and makes the water safe for the fish
- filter  – How sponge filters work + how to set them up – Pros + cons of sponge filters - heater (76-82F) i have three of these heaters and they’re great! the cords are really short tho, thats the big downside :T this post has a ton of other heater suggestions! - thermometer glass ones are my personal fave, and way more accurate than the sticker kind. i think theyre 1-2$ at walmart! - 1+ hide (caves, terra cotta pots, an ornament, just a place where they can hide out or chill in) - decor (lots of decor ideas listed below!) - silk/live plants (plastic isn’t the best idea since plastic plants can tear a betta’s delicate fins) – craft mesh “betta beds” (you can buy plastic craft mesh sheets at walmart for like 1-2$ and you get a few big sheets!) – dollar store flowers (remove wire, soak to make sure they don’t bleed) - pvc, terra cotta pot, mug, glass, jar hides (your cabinet, goodwill, dollar store) – dollar store betta tanks – diy decor – craiglist, facebook marketplace, offerup, letgo, etc. BE HUNTIN FOR THEM DEALS! – anacharis is pretty cheap: one bunch at petco is 2.99. the stuff grows like CRAZY and it makes a great floating plant! it’ll send of lots of runners and in no time your fish will have a big anacharis jungle to swim in! plants also use the nutrients in fish waste to grow. since anacharis grows pretty fast, it uses up lots of waste! i have it in my 10 gallon with little led light and it went from 8″ to 24″ in 2-3 weeks...that’s crazy imo. – petco and petsmart usually have plants and supplies for sale on their website but not in the store. if you show the cashier the online price, they’ll match it at the checkout so make sure to do some online window shopping before you go! – hobby lobby and micahaels have a ton of their floral stuffs on sale right now as well! just be sure to avoid glitter and remove any metal stems, etc. in the ‘diy decor’ link above, there’s a video that shows you how to make diy silk plants! you definitely DONT have to make plant weights tho...you can usually set silk plants on the bottom of the tank no problem, and there’s nothing wrong with floating plants either~ - quality food i like new life spectrum thera +a pellets (long name, i know, but i know u can buy them at petco!) or omega one pellets or the betta buffet flakes. frozen foods like blood worms and shrimp are also good additions to a betta’s diet :) hikari betta bio gold is an okay food (i know they sell it at walmart, so that’s why i wanted to mention it), but its got fillers. for now, whatever you have  for food will be okay :) just wanted to give you some options in case you want to change your food in the future. - test kit this kit is my favorite! the value is faaaantastic and the tests give more specific readings than the strips :p - lid bettas can be jumpers so lids are recommended. if your tank doesn’t come with a lid or is an odd shape and you can’t buy one, then craft mesh may be good option! it’s really cheap at walmart or craft stores and you can cut it with regular scissors. it’s basically plastic mesh…you can weigh it down or create a frame for it since it’s pretty light ^-^ - light if you don’t buy a kit that comes with a hood+light combo, or any light at all…you’ll probably need one! leds are a good choice :) i just bought 2 of these nicrew lights and they work amazingly! definitely bright enough for at least medium light plants and super white~ you can also buy clip-on LED with a gooseneck like this one (tho i’d be sure to check the measurements on lights as cheap as these!) or even a light from home depot~ for a tank that small, you could also use a desk lamp. with a desk lamp you could probably grow low-light plants like anacharis and anubias. when i had a little planted vase on my desk, i just went to goodwill and got one for $3 ^-^” - water change bucket honestly just really helpful to have...if you have one bucket (or any large container, tbh) you can empty old tank water into it and then after you’ve dumped that out, you can fill it with new tank water and add conditioner to prepare the water before adding it to the tank!
- siphon is optional, and for smaller tanks a turkey baster works! you can also just get some airline tubing and use that...same principle! siphons usually have a plastic tub attached to small rubber hose (same thing as airline hose) and they help to drain your tank when you take old water out of it during a water change.
What’s this cycle thing?
It’s the Nitrogen Cycle!
All fish produce waste. Because all aquatic animals produce waste, they require (biological) filtration of some sort to process that waste.
Fish produce waste in the form of ammonia. Ammonia is toxic above 0ppm (parts per million). So you’ve got all this ammonia floating around in the water, right? and you’ve got water running through your filter…so these bacteria start growing all over your fish tank, wherever there’s water flow, but we want to concentrate on the bacteria that are growing in your filter media. This bacteria will be processing the waste that your fish or aquatic animal produces :)
So your fish produced some waste, and it’s floating around in the water as ammonia. The first bacteria (#1) that grows will ‘eat’ the ammonia and then ‘poop’ out nitrites.
Nitrites are also toxic to aquatic animals above 0ppm though :/ so then another bactiera (#2) grows and it ‘eats’ these nitrites that are floating around in the water and ‘poops’ out nitrates.
Nitrates are safe for fish (up to 20ppm)! :D Since there’s no bacteria that’s going to grow to eat these nitrates that are in the water, we have to physically remove them by doing a water change. A helpful post about water changes, how they work!
If you have live plants, they will use some of the ammonia, nitrite, and/or nitrates in the water as nutrients :) Some plants will use more than others, as some plants are heavy root feeders, some are floaters, and some prefer to be somewhere in the water column. (note: live plants SHOULD NOT totally replace water changes! water changes are still necessary even for planted tanks :3)
To recap, “the cycle” aka “the nitrogen cycle” goes like this: Fish waste (ammonia) -> bacteria #1 -> nitrite -> bacteria #2 -> nitrate -> water change
Okay, so how do I make “the cycle” happen? How do I “cycle” my tank?
Note: knowing where you are in the nitrogen cycle (how much ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate is in the tank / being produced) requires a test kit.
Keep your water parameters .25ppm ammonia/.25ppm nitrites/20ppm nitrates or less :) In order to do this, you’ll have to do a ton of water changes, but your fish will thank you since ammonia and nitrite are toxic to fish! Bettas are pretty hardy, and one of the only fish that you can perform a fish-in cycle with, so just be sure to keep those parameters as low as possible until your readings are 0 ammonia/0 nitrite/ x nitrates (these are the parameter readings for a cycled tank). After that, make sure your nitrates stay 20ppm or below, doing a water change whenever they reach 20ppm or higher. Also note that it’s important to continue to test ammonia and nitrite levels even if your tank is cycled, since sometimes parameters spike or a cycle crashes, and you wont know unless you’re checking for that!
Okay, but what about water changes??
This post
explains how to figure out how much water you need to change!
You should do a water change at least 1x a week! You need to remove at least 50% of the tank’s water 2-3x a week for now (if you have the 1 gallon tank), and when you upgrade you can do it 1x a week. After you get a test kit / can monitor your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) you can figure out how much water to change and how often. You can remove the water via a cup (just scoop out the water) or a siphon (a ‘gravel vac’, tho most will be much too large for small tanks, airline tubing, a turkey baster, etc.). If you have a large container or totally clean (not used for chemicals, dirt, etc.) bucket then you can prepare your new water in that! add dechlorinator to the new water in the container, sitr well, then add it to the tank. make sure the temp matches. since you have no heater, let the water adjust to room temp (since the tank should also be room temp) by letting it sit out for a while before adding it to the tank. if you don’t have a container to make new water in, you should take out water from the tank, add dechlorinator to the tank, then add new water to the tank (preferably at room temp...as a sudden temperature fluctation can shock your betta. extreme temp shock will kind of paralyze your betta for a while so its important that the new water matches the tank temp within a few degrees). you can remove the fish if you’d like and then add him back after you’re done.
The order i think you should buy supplies in:
- water conditioner (you said you have some, but you wanted to get a better one) - 5+ gallon tank - filter - heater - thermometer (it’s pretty cheap, so you could probably buy it sooner rather than later) - decor  (1+ hide, silk/live plants, substrate (sand, gravel, etc.)) - test kit - lid - water change bucket - light - quality food
why this order? - your fish will die without water conditioner. it removes chlorine (some also remove chloramines and heavy metals) from the water, and your fish cannot live in chlorinated water. - a bigger tank means that you can safely heat the tank. a bigger tank also means that waste will be more diluted so as long as you keep up with large weekly water changes (of 50%+) then you can hold off on the filter for a little while. - filter after getting a bigger tank, best to find a filter and start fish-in cycling the tank! - bettas need heat to regulate body temperature (like reptiles!) and it’s an important basic necessity - you should get a thermometer as soon as you get your heater. even if you get an adjustable heater (which should come with an internal thermostat, so it knows when to turn off/on and keeps the tank from being too cold/hot), the heater may be off by 1-2F, meaning that you could set it to 78 but the tank’s actual temp is 76. it’s just good to have and only 1-2$ so you could probably get it around the same time you get your heater. - bettas need cover to feel safe / not be stressed: another important part of your fish’s overall health and wellbeing! hides, decor, plants, etc. bettas love space but they dont necessarily like open space. there’s cheap diy decor links throughout this post and below! - if you’re doing large weekly water changes, your ‘water parameters’ should be okay, but knowing what those parameters are is still important! so definitely make plans to get a test kit :) - i dont think that jumping happens that often, so foregoing a lid for a bit and getting more important items first is okay imo...but its still an important precautionary item to have, so i recommend still getting one! - a water change bucket will make your life so. much. easier. about $3-5 at home depot or walmart. usually they’re 5.5 gallon buckets! - you can put the tank in a well-light place in the room (NOT in direct sunlight tho) and be okay! if you want to get a light so you can see the tank better, go for it :) - i think that buying good quality food (if you dont already have it...usually protein should be 38%+ and the first few ingredients shouldn’t be “__ meal”s but whole ingredients) comes last since if you’ve got your fish you’ve probably also already got food...so your fish has food and that’s already covered! upgrading the quality or adding variety can wait until you’ve got all the other bases covered :)
Supply Suggestions: - first off, i always recommend checking letgo, offerup, facebook marketplace, craigslist, and/or other local classifieds or ‘for sale’ sites! also check out any thrift stores like goodwill! you might find some of your equipment or decor at super low prices!! i’ve gotten all of my equipment either on sale or second hand so there’s absolutely no shame in hunting for second hand deals! - seachem prime water conditioner lasts foreeever (it’s highly concentrated so you only need a few drops per gallon! i use a pin to poke a hole in the seal of a new bottle instead of totally removing the seal so that i can count how many drops i need!) and will neutralize ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate for 24-48 hours in case of any parameter level spikes! if you can’t find prime, that’s okay! most liquid water conditioners will do just as well. i know that tetra makes some “betta+ water conditioner” or whatever but you don’t need a “betta-specific” water conditioner...most things labeled “for bettas!!!” are gimmicky and unnecessary and you can use the ‘regular’ product most likely :p - 10 gallon tank at petco, $10 - if space is an issue, consider a 12″ bubble bowl (3-5 gallons of water, depending on how much decor is in the bowl and how full of water it is). you can find them at some walmarts in the floral section and most hobby lobbys/michaels. at hobby lobby, you can present their 40% off coupon and it’ll probably be about $10 as well. a bubble bowl will probably not work with hang-on-back filter, tho, but they usually work great with sponge filters. - sponge filter from petsmart - sponge filter from amazon - pack of sponge filters from amazon - small hang-on-back (HOB) filter (azoo palm, also called azoo mignon) - thermometer - heater from amazon - terra cotta pot hide (craft section at walmart, $1 and no drainage hole which means your fish can’t get stuck in it! you don’t have to buy it at walmart, and it can have a drainage hole. just make sure the pot is actually terra cotta and not painted and if it has a hole, just bury the pot deeper into the substrate (gravel, sand, the stuff you’ve got on the bottom of the tank). - silk flowers from craft stores or the dollar store. hobby lobby gives a 40% off coupon and they’re always having sales on seasonal floral stuff so you could get a big bunch of silk greenery or stem(s) of silk flowers for cheap! - glassware hides (ceramic fully glazed/sealed mugs, glasses, glass bowls, glass mugs, etc.) can be found in your own kitchen or at local thrift stores, often for less than $1! if you need to disinfect something, DONT use soap, use hot water or hot water + vinegar instead! be sure to rinse extra well if using vinegar. - anacharis costs 2.99/bunch at petco. try to get the greenest looking one (sometimes the ends are or a stem or two is brown tbh but it gives new grown pretty fast!), and then prune / throw any any brown parts. if all of the edges of the leaves of a stem are brown, but the middle/stem is green, keep that stem til you see new stems branching off. when those new stems are 2+ inches, just snap them off and throw away the original stem. if the stem turns more brown and doesn’t give off new shoots, throw it away. if the stem is totally brown on one end but green on the other, cut off the brown part of the stem and keep the green. anacharis can be cut / snapped into pieces and then grow from the pieces! - craft mesh to make a lid with. i think it’s also called plastic craft canvas or something like that and you should be able to buy it at craft stores as well - you can also use craft mesh to make those betta hammocks i linked to in the ‘supplies list’s ‘decor’ section above. you cut out a strip and then tie the ends together with thread / fishing line or use zip ties. whatever you have available. - i gave lighting suggestions under the ‘supplies list’ section above
