Ghost in the Shell (2017) review
I came into this movie with an open mind. Despite every fibre of my fanboy teenage ghost rejecting this alien reincarnation. I even set aside the whitewashing criticisms to just see if the movie can achieve something significant in spite of it.
Within roughly 5 minutes, this movie assured me I was going to be treated like a lobotomised baby. I shit you not, within seconds of a beautifully rendered manufacture sequence we watch two introduced characters in a room blatantly tell us what "ghost in the shell" means in the most uninspired way imaginable.
I wish I could tell you that this was just me getting off on the wrong foot but throughout, the movie is so uncertain in how to portray the themes, symbolisms and spiritual/ religious references that make up the brain in GitS' cyberpunk action body. The script just glitches between lame exposition by talking heads and still reflection in its precise composition but the two hardly work together.
It's like the film can't find its centre and as a result is neither a compelling action sci-fi or a meditative exploration of its philosophies. If this were Aaronofsky/ Gilliam or Bay/ Snyder perhaps (for better or worse) at least this movie would have a distinct direction to go in but instead it sits in the middle and suffers at both.
Hell, I'm sure many fans would be happy if this just took the Dredd approach. If they just accepted that the fans know the backstory and the non fans don't need it and made this simply about the Section 9 anti cyber crimes team doing their job, kicking ass n taking names, it would at least have a better chance of success amongst its primary demographic.
Instead Hollywood thinks big and wants to initiate a new franchise, origin story and all, n crams so much bullshit to try and get new audiences into it that Section 9 itself gets pushed way back in the corner. Audiences spend more time getting to know the Majors mum/s than they do with any her team.
They ditch the cerebral plot of the '95 anime whereby Major Motoko Kusanagi working within Section 9 are tracking a hacker who turns out not only to be an AI secretly created by the government to assassinate political targets but has become sentient, claims asylum and ends up merging consciousness with Major Kusanagi by the end.
Here we get Major Motoko Kusanagi of Section 9, pissed that many innocent people were murdered in experiments to create her and super shitty that her entire identity was a lie and she's actually a bratty anti establishment punk.
After all is said and done, what we get is Robocop-Lite (and thats the reboot mind you). All the nuance, intrigue and head scratching ideology that we got in the shorter length '95 anime is reduced here to identity theft and yet another unremarkable corporate business villain to cover it up. We've seen this shit SO often. I'm beginning to think Hollywood just doesn't know how to do it any other way. They weren't all bad mind you, Robocop, Total Recall, The Matrix, these are all great films but GitS in its initial reception really broke the mould and here to see it put back in the cage of "been here, done that" is so incredibly disappointing.
As far as anime/manga Hollywood adaptations are concerned, the bar is INCREDIBLY low. I'd argue the only good one amongst them is Edge of Tomorrow/ Live Die Repeat. Aside from that, every otaku since the 90's is used to being made fun of in the result of America trying to morph them into something that works amongst their style of cinema. Japan has made some great adaptations partly because they don't feel the need to repackage the story.
This GitS remake tries desperately to be on the fans side by copying much of the '95 movies look (with varying degrees of success, some scenes are very accurate in their reproduction but the hair in this film is more reminiscent of X-men (2000) and seems cosplay-ish at times).
There are few scenes lifted from the original but most get twisted to accommodate the new storyline, at which point I ask why bother? Half measures don't tend to turn many heads and whilst paying homage by really making the effort to be exact duplications in some ways is applaudable, you're giving yourself less room to do your version of it. At least then, whether the film turns out to be shit or not, I'll respect that you tried to do your own thing.
ok, casting. this argument has already been done to death and I've just about run outta energy already on the whole Scarlett Johanson thing but a few things that never seem to come up: first of all, acting wise, I gotta say it's all much of a fucking muchness isn't it? Kusanagi does not outwardly express much so its mostly a headgame for an actress with the chance to throw in some subtleties in the voice acting.
I don't really like Scarlet Johansson's performances but that its preposterous for anyone to come to the conclusion that her resume would land her this gig is a bit of a stretch. Do people realise how rare it is to find an A-list celebrity that has an extensive list of both highly demanding physical action blockbusters and subtle minimalist detail performances? Of course they are going to cast her. Before anyone throws ME personally into somehow being against ethnic minorities in blockbuster films (which would be absurd for anyone who knows me) '95 GitS director Mamoru Oshii also gave his stamp of approval.
They really tried with the marketing to dodge the bullet by just not bringing it up but it's really not dealt with well in the film and leads to some pretty fucking awkward moments for a racial debate charged audience to watch.
I would have preferred the role to go to a Japanese actress but remember, this is Hollywood and if a studio is gonna push bringing THIS film out, you bet your bottom dollar that they're going with someone that is a household name in America.
The only internationally known Japanese name out there right now is Rinko Kikuchi (who to date has 2 American films out there, both not big successes). I love most of her films and there ARE a few other Japanese actresses I would love to see in the role but Hollywood studios are not gonna bank on the success of Japanese films. Hell, the fact that they put Takeshi Kitano in bit part in this movie is as far as they are willing go to get in on that market. Few seem to point at his casting as some kind of justification and I laugh quite hard. Seriously, you're gonna give this guy (who's acted AND directed in over 20 brilliant films) a few minutes of screen time and applaud that as some kind of cultural milestone?
Which brings me to the big casting shame that NO ONE is fucking talking about because they're so caught up with the Johansson shit. Aside from Kusanagi, there are 6 Japanese members of the Section 9 taskforce. How many are Japanese? Kitano, yes. Who else? Saito. Did you remember him? He's the guy that snipes the helicopter at the very end of the film. You see his face for like 10 seconds. Pretty big step in casting mulitculturally, right? Don't get me wrong, the cast IS incredibly multicultural. We got actors from all over the world pretending to be Japanese:
A Danish guy as Batou A Chinese guy as Togusa An Australian as Ishikawa A Zimbabwean as Borma
Why keep the names?! Just call them whatever, it doesn't matter. You don't give them anything important to do anyway. Have a mulit-ethnic team but when they're all speaking clearly in their national accents and supposed to be portraying Japanese characters, THAT'S what should really piss people off because THESE roles could have gone out to Japanese people and it would not have even been a risk for the studio.
Ultimately, the one real positive thing I have to say is a great job for the WETA production team on some fantastic animatronics and moulds...that's pretty much it. Shame it couldn't be in a better film.

The Everywhere God As a child, the concept that God was everywhere seemed magical. I used to think He was like the Invisible Man. I longed even then to see Him, hear Him, and to be seen and heard by Him in return. Christ was given the name Immanuel, which means “God with us.” Twelve years ago, I adopted a baby boy whose Zimbabwean birth mother gave him a Shona name that means the very same thing. That name holds great value and reminds our household that no matter what, God is with us. In Matthew, God told Joseph an incredible story in a dream that seems unbelievable (Matthew 1:23 NIV). Think for a moment about how the validity of that dream could have been questioned more than any other dream. God told Joseph something outrageous and gave him a name that described the child in Mary’s womb. He woke up to simply obey and believe. I talk to many people who question God being with them. How can God be everywhere and right here all at the same time? I hear others speak about a circumstance and wonder, “Where was God?” When Immanuel came, He never left. The where is God is the right here is God.  When I wrote the song, “Our God Is With Us,” I remember receiving that chorus first and just singing it over and over. “Our God is with us, our God is with us, He will never leave.” God knows our weakness in believing that He can be everywhere all at once. God knew what Joseph needed to get through what was about to happen, and God knows what you need. When God has a plan, nothing can stop it except your doubt in His nearness. If tonight you were given a dream of completing a task that seemed impossible, yet God told you that Immanuel would be with you the whole way, would you wake up to obey or would you run in doubt? The lyrics to the bridge of the song say, “He is for us, no one can stop what he’s doing. He is with us; we will see all that he’s promised.” Mary and Joseph didn’t fear because they were promised Immanuel. God was with them in the form of Jesus. Jesus is still with us. My prayer is that you stop doubting and just believe it. https://www.instagram.com/p/B5K0Xbxnw2EFXPkjFKYV79MSIBcUjr87vWCEk00/?igshid=lq15v5m3jytp

You Must Head to Cargo
“You must head to cargo” the information desk clerk told me, so Chris Ferguson and I drove down the road a ways to the old airport terminal, which is nothing more than a few hangers and an old air strip. I asked for the name I had been given, and was led down a hallway into an office with two aloof officials (a man and a woman). I said hello and received no reply. I produced my paperwork and the woman told me to take a seat. After pouring over the receipt and my newly acquired license, she says to me, “the government was very interested in your drone.” Of course they were, I thought, it shoots 4K baby!
After about twenty minutes they tell me that they do not currently have the keys for the cargo hold where my drone is located and I must return to the airport terminal to speak with officials from “The Office of the President.” I return and of course no one knows what I’m talking about. The poor man at the information desk was simply trying to help, and this American was asking questions way above his pay grade. How was he supposed to know the mobile number for CIO agents high up in the government? He told me to wait, so I did. About twenty minutes pass in an uncomfortable plastic chair, and two young men arrive in plain clothes. Mr. Information Desk points me in their direction. I’m a bit confused because these gents look to be younger than me and much less serious than I had expected. I knew something was different when they opened their mouths and both spoke the King’s English. I’ve misplaced their names at this point, but they were both very pleasant and seemingly relatable. They asked me a few questions about where I was intending to fly my the drone, and when I told them I simply brought the drone as a way to document our family holiday, they commiserated with my situation and we shared a laugh about the unorganized nature of Zimbabwe. Another 15 minutes pass and the keys have magically been found but there is now a flight inbound and all the officials from “Cargo” are coming to the main terminal in order to assist in the disembarking effort. A nice lady informs me it would most likely be another hour or so and I would have to come back. At this point all I could do was sit and wait, wait for what I wasn’t really sure, but if I’ve learned anything about Zimbabwe after all this time, it’s that getting frustrated about “your situation” is folly; the entire country is frustrated, get in line.
Eventually the two aloof cargo officials came strolling in, and after a few minutes the man (whom at this point, I had yet to hear utter a syllable) caught my eye, but sticking to his script he said nothing. I thought it best to just keep my distance and wait. Eventually the man from cargo and the two young CIO officials looked to be chatting, and one of them motioned at me. Upon his beckoning I got up with sweaty palms and walked in their direction. During the next 10 minutes, I stand on the outside of these three men chatting, trying to translate the combination of Shona and English they were speaking. Feeling a bit like the unpopular kid at recess, I figure out that the man from cargo is in fact the boss and he seems to be discussing my fate with the two young government men.
I began thinking about sitting down again when the boss finally addressed me; he was sweating from the heat of the day and said, “how do you intend to pay your rent?”(After confiscating items from travelers, the Customs Department charges a daily fee of 16 Bond in order to hold ones items safely until he or she can collect. My rent was about 100 Bond for five nights, about 10 US Dollars)
“In cash” I said, “in Bond notes.”
“Do you have it?” He replied.
“Yes! Of course.” I said, trying not to get my hopes up.
“Meet me back at cargo in ten minutes.” He said.
So off we went, back to the old air strip. Chris Ferguson, as he does so naturally, found ways to keep things light and funny, instead of frustrating. It’s a trait of most Africans I’ve met that I truly admire. It’s the “don’t sweat the small stuff” mentality that keeps Zimbabweans going, keeps them hopeful for the future. It was a lesson that I was learning in real time. The boss emerged from the shadow of the hanger doors and led me back into the office. Everything looked the same, except for my drone sitting in plain view on his desk. He asked me to sit, so I did. Again, we went over my paperwork, I signed a few things and then the deal was done. I gave him my Bond notes and he passed me my drone. It was everything I could do not to run out of the office once I had it in my hands, but I thanked him for his time and gathered my receipt. “Did you get it Christo?!” Chris Ferguson asked me as I briskly walked back to the car. I lifted up the case and gave him a thumbs up...
As we drove away from the airport, again we laughed and shook our heads over this place we love so much.
Though the saga described above prevented us from aerial documentation of our week at Morning Star, we made up for lost time during the remaining two weeks of our stay in Zimbabwe. The video footage included below represents some highlights from our visit to the Eastern Highlands; Chimanimani and Honde Valley. Enjoy!

We were never married - Rachel J fires back at Zimbabwe's former Finance Minister, Terrence Mukupe over alleged infidelity with Prophet Bushiri
Zimbabwean singer Rachel Jambaya popularly known as Rachel J, has fired back at her "estranged" husband and former Zimbabwean Deputy Minister of Finance, Terence Mukupe over allegations of having an affair and being impregnated by popular South Africa-based Malawian Pastor, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri.  Recall LIB reported earlier that Terrence accused the General Overseer of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church of being a “fake prophet” and running a “fake church” after he came across what he says is WhatsApp evidence of his wife and the preacher arranging to meet for sex romps in Malawi, Pretoria and Rustenburg.
Tumblr media
Reacting to the allegation via a statement released by her family on Tuesday March 3, Rachel J stated that she was never married to Terrence Mukupe. She insisted that they were only cohabiting while also pointing out that she saved him from bankruptcy.  The singer who just welcomed a baby, averred that she is prepared to undergo DNA tests to prove that her baby is Mukupe’s. She also accused the former Zanu PF MP for Harare East of cheating on her and having at least four children with other women while they were together.
Tumblr media
The statement reads in full;  We as the Rachel J family, have decided to come out and address the accusations being levelled against her that are being circulated on social media by a Terence Mukupe. It has taken us this long because, we wanted our daughter and sister to give birth in peace, and the fact that Rachel J being the private person she is, didn’t want to get involved in this social media fiasco, and also her dealing with the emotional trauma after she was attacked by Terence Mukupe at one of her residence and she had to seek a protection order against Terence Mukupe. We want to state that these are malicious and defamatory statements issued. As you know, Terence Mukupe relies on unseemly and ungodly false attacks on others to maintain relevance. These allegations are unequivocally false, totally unsubstantiated and uncorroborated, and it’s a malicious and desperate attack on Rachel J and our family by a disgruntled individual who swore before the Police and witnesses that he would do everything in his power even if it meant fabricating material to destroy Rachel J, anyone close to her as well as discrediting her to her business contacts. He swore if he can’t have Rachel J no one else.Reason being Rachel J had terminated their relationship. Because she had discovered that Terence Mukupe had once again impregnated Tracy Winterboer, who just gave birth a week ago a few days before Rachel J’s giving birth. This being the second child sired with the same woman during Rachel J’s relationship with Terence Mukupe. What’s disturbing is he secretly moved this woman to South Africa near Rachel’s place of residence so that he can be close to her. What hurts us is the treatment she is getting from this man who constantly cheated and humiliated her by siring 4 kids whilst in a relationship with Rachel J, whom she embraced looked after and welcomed into her own home. Rachel has shown love and commitment toward his kids by assisting them with education, food and clothes.Terence Mukupe should realise that he is a father, he should stop this humiliating behaviour and take care of his 10 kids. For a man blessed with so many kids, he must stay away from public humiliation and realise that his kids will have no one to look up to and also for a man who claims to love his so called wife but humiliate her in public over infidelity whilst he was sleeping with different women in her office, it is puzzling.Terence Mukupe is no stranger to rejecting his unborn babies. He only comes through claiming the paternity after the expenses have been covered. What annoys us is the fact that Terence continues to deny this child in public whilst privately he and his family are requesting to be a part of this child’s life, claiming it’s theirs. On the issue of cultural activity and occultism it’s really shocking coming from a man, with incisions (nyora) all round his waist, who jumps from sangoma to sangoma every weekend trying to attain evil powers to become a President.Do not let us spill your beans. Kindly advise us on where we can deliver your tsvimbo and black and red occult (machira emudzimu) cloths which you left at our daughter’s previous residence.Do not deny this as your relatives who stayed with Rachel J have all the knowledge of your occult activities. He became violent after Rachel had cut off all financial support towards him, his children and baby mothers. After having lost Rachel everything including vehicles he became a violent man. No one of any gender, adult or child deserves this kind of abuse. Attacking a defenceless pregnant woman is a sign of weakness and should never be supported in our society.Rachel J was never married to Terence Mukupe, formally or customarily. She is a single woman. As family we have never met Terence Mukupe nor has he ever set foot in any of our houses. He should not confuse dating to marriage. We are grateful for Rachel refusing to marry this man, because of his infidelity and misuse of her wealth. Initially we were shocked because Rachel has never dated a politician. She has always believed in love, and not relationships based on money since she is an independent woman.Because of Rachel’s naivety she allowed this man to move in to her home. Having moved in without anything in his name, she transformed his life into a respectable member of society with something to his name and his family is aware of this. Rachel has always been a serial entrepreneur with vast business interests in the cleaning industry, mining, fashion, media, transport and logistics. She welcomed the idea to work with this man and fought by all means to build a business empire with him.As a family we are in deep shock and distress, with the developments that are taking place, considering the amount of resources poured into the life of Terence Mukupe by Rachel J. Just to name a few we are all aware of what went into the last political campaign which she sponsored from the massive billboards, regalia, media, campaign vehicles, sarongs (mazambia) and newspaper. These resources could have been put to better use as a family. Rachel has always protected Terence reputation in making people believe, he was the one taking care of her. Yet he solely relied and lived off Rachel, funding his 5 baby mother’s, kids and girlfriends. The claims being levelled at Rachel J, of being impregnated by Prophet Bushiri are unbelievable with his evidence stating that they met in 2018, how is it possible for her to carry a pregnancy for two years. We are confidently waiting for Terence Mukupe to go for a DNA test. Terence’s statement that Rachel asked for forgiveness is false. The claims that Terence Mukupe ceded R100,000 to Bushiri are totally baffling for a man who doesn’t even have a property to his own name and was failing to pay school fees for his children by that time.Whose house was repossessed by the bank? Rachel has been paying rentals for his family to still be able to continue living in that property. He has been failing to clear his debts and the lawyers have been communicating with Rachel who has been helping him to clear those debts.Terence Mukupe should give us evidence of the plane tickets he paid for Rachel to go to Malawi, and also evidence of him expressing interest to do business with Prophet Bushiri whom he has never met. No one stands to gain from publicly humiliating someone, instead it leaves scars.Terence Mukupe should realise that Rachel J is not only a business woman but also a mother, and the damage he has caused is irreparable. He has caused great emotional pain to her daughter and this will leave a scar for life. Regardless of the fact that Rachel J has decided to stay in recluse and quiet over this issue we felt it in our best interest as a family to come out and clear a few issues which were raised. This is a truly hurtful time for us, because we know the type of a person Rachel is who has done nothing but show love and commitment to this man. Wisdom is understanding that relationships come to an end, and this should be done amicably without abusing the other partner. We should be the ones fighting and humiliating him, because he never looked after Rachel instead it was vice versa to a man who showed no love and appreciation. We pray that God guides Terence Mukupe in the right path. The more that we choose not to talk about domestic violence, the more we shy away from the issue, the more we lose. Read the full article

Celebrating gorillas at “the best Kwita Izina ever!” Rwanda’s gorilla naming ceremony
Gorilla tracking is said to be a “once in a lifetime” experience yet I love this primate encounter more and more each time
Tumblr media
Oblivious to our presence, the Silverback mountain gorilla takes a snooze…
Did you know… if you track the mountain gorillas around the time of Kwita Izina, you can get a personal invitation to attend the gorilla naming ceremony?
Last week’s mountain gorilla tracking was even more exhilarating than the last time – but I’ll leave that story for another day. For now, imagine the calm here in Volcanoes National Park as a ranger guide watches a Blackback* male mountain gorilla …
*A Blackback will one day mature to be a Silverback gorilla.
I have huge respect for the rangers, guides and researchers on the ground who protect these beguiling creatures (and the porters clad in overalls and gum boots who effortlessly help us track).
What is Kwita Izina?
During the first week of September every year, celebrities from around the world touch down in Kinigi, Volcanoes National Park, to name the baby gorillas born in the last year in Rwanda. There is nothing like this anywhere else.
From early morning, thousands of young Rwandese throng to the event site. They wait excitedly for their favourite musicians to perform for them live, free of charge. It’s said 60,000 people attended Kwita Izina 2018!
Dancers warm up the crowd at Kwita Izina. Behind them is the gorilla-shaped stage crafted from natural materials
The Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony is an opportunity to publicly thank the conservationists closest to protecting these great apes. It’s also a global showcase for the country’s tourism industry. Gorilla namers include Rwandan and international conservationists, sports personalities, renown philanthropists and diplomats. Read my blog from a previous Kwita Izina, in which I explain the derivation of the term and the history of its creation.
According to East African tourism expert Carmen Nibigira, this year’s event was “the best event ever!”
Why is Kwita Izina such an important event for Rwanda and Africa?
Thanks to conservation initiatives like Kwita Izina, the Mountain Gorilla population in the Virunga Massif has increased from 480 in 2010 to to 604 in 2016 (results of last census). The Virunga Massif covers Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, and the Mikeno Sector of Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In 1981, Mountain Gorilla numbers had dropped to just 242 individuals, according to the Rwanda Development Board. (Results of the latest gorilla census are expected to show a further increase in gorilla numbers. However the species is still classed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List).
Now in its 14th year, Kwita Izina has gone from being a one day gorilla naming event to a whole week of conservation and tourism related events. Tourism can be a powerful tool for lifting people out of poverty and Rwanda is pushing it at every level. One of the week’s events is the two-day Conversation on Conservation (CoC) forum in Kigali which takes a strategic look at conservation in the country.
What were the highlights of Kwita Izina 2018?
My 11 hour bus journey from Kampala to Kigali was worth every minute. Here are a few of the amazing people I met in Rwanda.
I couldn’t resist saying hello to fellow Brit Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, one of 23 celebrity namers at the Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony. I’ve always been a fan of his TV shows and environmental campaigns
Prosper Uwingeli is the Chief Park Warden of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Here I’m proudly holding my box of Rwandese tea 🙂
Prosper was very helpful when I was researching the ecotourism guidebook “Walking with the Gorillas” published earlier this year by Horizon Travel Press.
Click on this graphic to download a free copy of “Walking with the Gorillas.” I was lead writer / researcher on this ecotourism guide. Contributors: Dr Gladys Kalema-Zikuosoka, Ian Redmond OBE and Emmanuel Bugingo
Did you know … trackers are now given beautiful presentation boxes of tea or coffee – Rwandese of course! (These replace the certificates we used to be given). Gorilla tracking in Rwanda now costs a whopping $1500 per permit as Rwanda pitches the country as a high-end tourism destination.
The South African duo Mafikozolo performed live at the Gala Dinner held at the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel in Gisenyi. Theo Kgosinkwe was one of the gorilla namers. (Thanks to Priya and Mallick of Red Scarab for letting me photobomb their moment with him!)
It’s always a pleasure to see the tourism dynamo Carmen Nibigira (middle). Susan Muumbi (left) from the East African newspaper has been a wonderful travel companion from one corner of Rwanda to the other! Photo taken at Kigali Serena Hotel
Susan and I watched three lions in Akagera National Park, ate Sambaza fish on Lake Kivu, survived the jaw-dropping canopy walkway in Nyungwe Forest, and enjoyed a thrilling gorilla tracking experience with the Titus gorilla family.
I had the honour of meeting His Highness ‘The Green Sheikh’ Abdul Aziz al Nuaimi (centre). To the right is Dr. Edwin Sabuhoro of the Parks, Recreations and Tourism Management. Thanks for the introduction Carmen Nibigira!
The 2018 gorilla namers with Belise Karisa, Chief Tourism Officer of Rwanda Development Board
As each namer takes the stage, they read out the gorilla baby names in Kinyarwanda and English. It’s fun to try and record the names on these Baby Name Cards

I always come away from Kwita Izina inspired. Rwanda tourism knows no bounds.

A special thank you to Rosemary Mugambi and everyone at Serena Hotels who hosted us at the Kigali Serena and Lake Kivu Serena. Your fabulous facilities were a real treat.

Crashing out on too much Jenners ? Had enough of the Hadid...
Tumblr media
Crashing out on too much Jenners ? Had enough of the Hadid sisters for the day? Wishing your social feed was marginally less Markle -filled for a few hours? Yep, it happens to the best of us. Don’t get us wrong—we love dissecting the latest Kim Kardashian West outfit as much as the next person, but sometimes it’s necessary to widen your celebrity style coterie and discover some new fashion talent. Whether it’s the edgy dress offering of Humans actor Gemma Chan or the chic trouser suits of Naomie Harris (aka Miss Moneypenny), there are so many well-dressed celebs out there to get inspired by. They might not have Instagram followers in the millions, but what they do have is style in droves. Scroll down to discover the lesser-known celebs we’re looking to right now.
Style Notes: American actor and model Laura Harrier looks every inch the modern-day heroine in this hot pink gown. Those sleeves are to die for.  Style Notes: Best known for her role as Michonne on The Walking Dead,Danai Jekesai Gurira is the Zimbabwean-American actress and playwright who has been wowing us with her jaw-dropping red carpet gowns. More of this, please.  Style Notes: With her fair complexion and classic approach to personal style, model and actress Gabriella Wilde is the embodiment of the English Rose. Go to her for fashionable twists on tailored staples. Style Notes: Never afraid to push the boundaries of red carpet style, Rowan Blanchard is the Disney Channel star set for Hollywood stardom. This ruffled Marc Jacobs number is a bold look yet she totally pulls it off.  Style Notes: British actress Bel Powley caught our eye when she stepped onto the red carpet in this bow-tie, floral midi dress.  Style Notes: Whether it’s lounging on the beach or pounding the NYC pavements, Tina Kunakey knows how to do high-impact dressing. Head to her Instagram account for inspo aplenty.  Style Notes: We’re more than a little bit jealous of actress Kiki Layne’s shimmering maxi skirt, which she wore to Dior’s couture show. In fact, we’ll take her whole wardrobe, please.  Style Notes: We’ve been besotted with model and actress Dree Hemingway’s unique, punk-inspired style for years. She is officially the queen of high-low fashion.  Style Notes: Gemma Chan’s Prabal Gurung dress is all kinds of cool. We love the punkish mash-up of the two checked fabrics. Style Notes: We’re jealous of Gemma’s minidress by cult fashion brand Vampire’s Wife. The trainers are a great urban addition to this ruffled floral frock. Style Notes: Jenna Coleman’s dusty pink Frame trouser suit is giving us all the ‘70s vibes, especially with those skyscraper platforms. Style Notes: Here we have another enviable cult dress. This one is from Russian brand Vilshenko. We can’t get enough of those ruffled sleeves. Style Notes: Letitia Wright, up-and-coming star of Black Panther, is a one to watch. She looked every inch the Hollywood starlet at the Avengers premiere in this space-age suit with tulle overlay. Style Notes: A red bomber jacket, black jeans, and hiking boots might seem like a simple combo, but as we all know, sometimes less is more. Letitia just looks beyond cool. Style Notes: It was during her recent film tour that Lily James’s name cropped up yet again on our fashion radar. This Phillip Lim dress cleverly combines Cinderella-inspired blue with fashion-forward details. Style Notes: The combination of ditsy florals and baby pink should look sickly sweet, but when rendered in striking, asymmetric cuts, it looks so chic. Style Notes: Haven’t yet heard of Lucy Boynton? We have no doubt that you will soon. The actress turned heads at Wimbledon in this floral Valentino dress. We also love the addition of yellow-tinted sunnies. Style Notes: Cult dress brand number three. This bold look from Batsheva ticks both the animal-print and prairie-dress boxes. Style Notes: Bond actress Naomie Harris pulls off this delicate pink Tibi suit with aplomb. Black accessories are a great addition. Style Notes: We’re already daydreaming of the heat wave thanks to this floral Zimmermann minidress. Also, can we just appreciate those matching green shoes? Style Notes: The Disney Channel actress shrugs off any tween star associations with this kick-ass Gucci jumpsuit and mini bag. Style Notes: Rowan champions designer-on-the-rise Molly Goddard with this chic red polka-dot dress. Style Notes: American actress, model, director, and television host Tracee Ellis Ross has given us so much style inspo over the last few months. Case in point? This showstopping Attico polka-dot number. Style Notes: We’re so here for this tiered vintage dress, which Tracee expertly styles with a waist-cinching belt and pink knee-high boots. In a sad development, a 28-year-old Zimbabwean man set himself on ablaze in Eastern Johannesburg,  South Africa. He couldn’t stand the sight of his ‘baby mama’ with other men. It is alleged that he doused himself first with petrol before setting himself on fire. The publication has established that Tinashe Marimo, who hailed from Chitungwiza, allegedly committed the act in a fit of rage. He was hospitalized for a few days with severe third-degree burns. Unfortunately, he eventually succumbed to the injuries. Sources close to the late Marimo, say that the now deceased once had a romantic relationship with a 38-year-old woman named Lizzie Ndlovu who is ten years his senior. However, after Lizzie broke up with him last year in December, he couldn’t cope with the reality of Lizzie moving on and being in another relationship. “The two had an on-and-off relationship and seemingly the woman had more power financially. At first, they were so much in love and were inseparable. They actually had a child together but they would fight a lot. Lizzie finally called it quits in December and they were staying in separate places,” said a source close to the two. The late Marimo was a qualified truck mechanic and a multi-talented musician, his genre was Zimdancehall. The source added that, “Tinashe was a ‘hustler’ but things were not going well for him due to this Covid-19 pandemic. He had been trying to reconcile with Lizzie who had since moved on. He didn’t take this lightly possibly resulting in what he did.” On the night in question, Murimo is alleged to have barged into his baby mama’s house already dripping of petrol and lit himself on fire. Neighbors rushed in with buckets full of water to try and extinguish the fire. He was rushed to the hospital with third-degree burns. This is the first time the now deceased Murimo has tried to kill himself.  Another source said, “Apparently this is not the first time Tinashe attempted to take his life. A few years ago he attempted to hang himself” Murimo’s body was repatriated back to Zimbabwe on Wednesday. His relatives are deeply hurt by what happened, some even fainted, during body viewing. Marimo relatives suspect foul play as they can’t believe Marimo would set himself on fire. Read the full article

Days 3 and 4
The past few days have been spent at Harare central Hospital at the CRU (children’s rehabilitation unit). This department focuses on children with disabilities. Thursday, I got to observe as the occupational therapist and some medical students applied casts to correct the malformations of clubfoot in 3 different children. The casts they were wrapping were made of a thick bandage material caked in plaster of paris. The bandages were soaked in warm water and then wrapped around the foot all the way up to the upper thigh. As the plaster hardened, the position of the foot was wrenched into a more normal shape. These casts stay on for a week, and then after some time, the child will come in again and get another cast. From what I saw, the casts look very heavy for the children to be burdened with. As the therapist told me, they would like to have a more lightweight alternative, but “in Zimbabwe, this is what we have”. As I have witnessed in other situations, that is pretty much the sentiment of every Zimbabwean. Things are not ideal, but they live their lives to the fullest with what is available for them.
In the afternoon, we headed out to a suburb a 20 min drive away called Mufakose. Here in a community room with peeling walls and ceiling, mats were laid out and mothers brought their disabled children in to work on their physical therapy. The students and therapists would watch to see if the mothers were doing it correctly, and stepped in when revisions were to be made. This was an incredible environment, as the mothers were all part of a community, and the workshop was a kind of reunion of all of these women going through the same set of challenges. I got to meet an adorable little boy named Sean who danced with me, and then used my arm to practice the physical therapy that had been given to him. Another friend I made was named Mildred, a sister to a child busy in therapy. She looked at me from across the room and I squatted down to greet her. She spoke shona to me and asked me questions which I could not answer because of the language barrier. One thing that is universal, however is the copycat game. I jumped, and so did she. I spun in a circle and clapped my hands, and she followed suit. We made on like this until her mother had successfully tied her baby to her back and they were to head home.
The most prevalent disability that I saw was cerebral palsy. The severity of the cases went from mild to severe, the most intense of which left the boy flailing his atrophied limbs as the medical student tried to get him to lift his head off the soft mat. Amidst the weight that these mothers carried, of having a disabled child, there was also lots of smiles and hope in their faces. I saw a mother with twin boys about 4 years old, both with cerebral palsy. One of them was up and walking at her side, while the other was strapped to her back. I have to assume that one of the children had responded to physical therapy faster than the other, but it still made me smile seeing them walk out the door. I imagine the two boys having a foot race against eachother in 5 years time.
Today was a lighter load, as I arrived to the CRU after all the doctors had gone, and only got to observe a counseling session with a couple with a 1 month old child. The rest of the day was spent relaxing, working out at the house I am staying at, and relishing the electricity at the moment while it is still on!
mavhiki ekufara! (happy weekend!)
