UPIS “math-sayang” ipinagdiwang ang Math Week 2024

Nakilahok ang mga mag-aaral ng UP Integrated School (UPIS) mula sa Grado K-12 sa ginanap na Math Week noong Marso 12-15, 2024.

Ang tema ng pagdiriwang ngayong taon ay “Playing with Math,” na hango sa paggugunita sa International Day of Mathematics o ang Pi Day. Layunin ng programa na malinang ang kaalaman at kakayahan ng mga estudyante sa larangan ng Matematika.

Sa loob ng buong linggo, iba’t ibang mga laro, patimpalak, at aktibidad ang kolektibong inilunsad ng Departamento ng Matematika, Departamento ng K-2, at UPIS Math Club ng Grado 3-10.

Isa sa mga tampok na aktibidad para sa K-2 ay ang "Math Character Challenge” na naglalayong ipalaganap ang pagkamalikhain ng mga mag-aaral sa pagguhit ng sariling karakter batay sa mga konsepto sa Matematika. Gumuhit ang mga mag-aaral sa Kinder ng kanilang orihinal na superhero; lumikha naman ang mga estudyante sa Grado 1 ng isang poster na nagpapamalas ng kanilang karakter; at bumuo ang mga mag-aaral ng Grado 2 ng isang comic strip na pinagbibidahan ng kanilang mga karakter. Ang mga nagwagi sa bawat baitang ay sina Mireya Aria B. Rebuelta ng K-Dahlia, si Luke Ezekiel Z. Santos ng 1-Pipit, at si Natalie Aria A. Castillo ng 2-Dalandan.

Sa bawat araw ng linggo, isinagawa naman ang "Brain Teasers Challenge" para sa Grado 3-12. Layunin ng pagsasanay na itong hikayatin ang mga mag-aaral na gamitin at ipamalas ang kanilang natutunan sa iba’t ibang konsepto ng Matematika. Ang bawat pagsasanay ay isinagawa sa bawat baitang, at ang mga ito ay nakabatay sa antas ng kanilang mga natutunan sa asignatura.

Nagkaroon din ng “Math Game Center: Interactive Exhibit” na naglalaman ng iba’t ibang mga larong sumubok sa kakayahan ng mga estudyante sa bawat araw. Para sa 3-6, nagkaroon ng mga laro tulad ng Tangrams, Kendama, at Puzzle Rings. Samantala, para sa 7-12 naman, nagkaroon ng mga laro tulad ng Galton Board, Buffon’s Needles, at Matchstick Equation Game.

Bilang paggunita sa Pi Day noong ika-14 ng Marso, idinaos ang larong “Pi Hunt” sa UPIS 3-6 at 7-12. Dito, naghanap ang mga mag-aaral ng labinlimang baryang papel na nakatago sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng gusali, ngunit sampu lamang ang naglalaman ng mga numero na katumbas ng pi na 3.14. Upang matukoy kung aling mga papel ang may tamang halaga, kinailangan ng mga mag-aaral na sagutin at i-kompyut ang mga matematikang problema na nakasulat sa papel. Ang mga estudyanteng nakakuha ng halaga ng pi ay nakatanggap ng premyo.

Naglunsad din ang Math Club mula Grado 3-10 ng isang fundraising activity sa pamamagitan ng pagbebenta ng Pi Cupcakes sa halagang ₱30 bawat piraso. Ang proyektong ito ay naglalayong makalikom ng pondo para sa kanilang mga susunod na gawain.

Bilang bahagi ng paglikom ng pera, isinagawa ang aktibidad na “Guess the Number,” na bukas para sa buong K-12. Layunin ng aktibidad na hikayatin ang mga mag-aaral na tantiyahin at hulaan ang bilang ng pingpong balls (K-2), mga holen (3-6), o duck clips (7-12) na nakalagaymaaaring ilagay sa isang sisidlan. Ang mga mag-aaral ay inanyayahan na magsumite ng kanilang mga hula at magbayad ng ₱5 para rito.

Maliban sa mga gawaing face-to-face, inilunsad din ang “InstaMath” kung saan nagbahagi ang mga estudyante ng litratong may kaugnayan sa tema ng paglalaro kasama ng Matematika. Ang mga nanalo sa palaro ay sina Serena Indra Fe Lucila K. Lacaba ng K-Mirasol, Sofia Isabel Elena M. Romero ng 4-Patani, at Tobin Abram Y. Malonzo ng 8-Firefly.

Sa kabuuan ng Math Week, nagkaroon ang mga estudyante ng pagkakataon na manalo ng premyo mula sa paglahok sa pamamagitan ng pagkumpleto ng kanilang stamp card. Ito ay nagsilbing talaan ng mga sinalihang gawain, kung saan maaari silang magkamit ng karagdagang puntos o insentibo sa asignatura.

Inorganisa ang nakalipas na Math Week upang magkaroon ng mas interaktibong programa ng taon sa pamamagitan ng paglalaro. “Makikita ang matematika na hindi limitado sa usual classroom set-up at paper and pen, kung saan maraming mga laro na konektado pala sa matematika,” ipinahayag ni 3-6 Math Club Adviser Maesel Galapin mula sa isang panayam. Dagdag ni Bb. Galapin, kabilang din ang Departamento ng K-2 sa pagsusuri ng mga aktibidad para sa linggo.

Ayon naman kay 7-10 Math Club Adviser Joseph Guiao sa isa ring interbyu ukol sa pagbubuo ng selebrasyon, “Sa muling pagpapatakbo ng Math Club ngayong taon, kabilang ang mga miyembro ng 3-6 at 7-10 Math Club sa nagbigay ng konsepto para sa mga aktibidad. Sila ang nakipag-ugnayan sa Math Faculty para sa mga pangangailangan para sa Math Week, at naging kabilang sa mga mismong nagpaunlak at nakilahok rito.”

FEATURE: Atin Siyang Salubungin: “Prinsipe Bahaghari” ng Teatrong Mulat

“May mga umaawit na gumamela? Mga nagsasalitang ahas at pusa? Lumilipad na papet? Niloloko mo ba ako kaibigan?” Aba’y hindi! Natunghayan namin mismo ang mahiwagang pagtatanghal ng ating mga kaibigan mula sa Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas.

Anong pagtatanghal? Syempre, ano pa ba kundi ang Prinsipe Bahaghari! Nais mo ba silang makilala?

SAAN TAYO PATUNGO?

Hango sa klasikal na kwentong pambata na “The Little Prince” ni Antoine de Sainte-Exupery, ang kwento ng ating munting prinsipe ay muling binigyang-buhay ng Teatro Mulat. Sa halip na sa disyerto ng Sahara, dadalhin tayo ni Prinsipe Bahaghari sa Pilipinas upang pagmasdan ang mga hardin ng gumamela. Sino bang hindi masasabik na umawit kasama ang bagong kaibigang si Kwentista, ang mga tala, hari, at nilalang na namamalagi sa ating bayan?

Itinampok sa “Prinsipe Bahaghari” ang pagmamahal ng prinsipe sa kaniyang gumamela matapos maglakbay sa iba’t ibang mundo, at kilalanin ang iba’t ibang mga hari. May kabagalan man ang ilang bahagi ng dula, gaya ng pakikisalamuha sa mga hari, sila nama’y bumalik kasama ang mga tagpong nakakapagpabagabag! Paano nga ba umusbong ang produksyon ng gayong istorya at pagtatanghal?

ANG ATING MGA GABAY

Taong 2019 nang unang tinahak ng Teatrong Mulat ang unang mga hakbang sa pagbuo ng dula na isinulat ni Vladimeir Gonzales, sa ilalim ng direksyon ni Aina Ramolete at ng producer at assistant director na si Prop. Amihan Bonifacio-Ramolete. Kalaunan, ito ay nakalipad sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon sa online dulaan noong pandemya. At ngayong taon, muling sumabak sa paglalakbay si Prinsipe Bahaghari, at natunghayan na natin siya sa pisikal na entablado. Tunay na nga ito, kaibigan!

NGUNIT SINO NGA BA ANG TEATRONG MULAT?

Bilang pinakaunang Teatro Papet Museo sa bansa, ibinibida ng Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas ang mga sining, alamat, at kwentong-bayan mula sa iba’t ibang lugar sa Asya. Kinikilala din ang kanilang galing sa paglahok sa samot-saring paligsahan sa buong mundo. Batid niyo bang ginawaran din bilang National Artist noong 2018 ang founder nito na si Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio? Bukod pa rito, madalas din silang makikita sa mga gawaing pampamayanan kasama ang mga organisasyong tulad ng HELP Learning Center Foundation at UNICEF.

Alam mo ba na bukod sa Prinsipe Bahaghari, marami na ring isinagawang programa ang Teatrong Mulat sa mga nagdaang taon! Ang ilan sa mga ito ay ang “Dalawang Bayani” (1996) at “Ang Pagong at ang Tsonggo” (1977).

MGA BAGONG KAIBIGAN

Pinaliligiran ng sining at musika ang mundo ng Prinsipe Bahaghari. Bilang mga pangunahing tauhan, sa mga papet ibinuhos ng produksyon ang kanilang galing at kakayanang pansining—mula sa pagkulay at pagguhit, paglalaro ng mga ilaw, hanggang sa pagsulat ng mga dayalogo’t awit. Kaya naman, ating kilalanin ang ilan sa mga tao sa likod ng dula!

Tinampok sa dula ang mga tauhang puppeteers. Una na rito si Prinsipe Bahaghari, na siyang pinagalaw nina Arvy Dimaculangan, Jeremy Bravo, at Sig Pecho. Binuhay naman nina Shenn Apilado, Karlo Erfe, at Harvey Rebaya Sallador ang karakter na si Kuwentista. Para sa mga hayop, ang Pusa ay pinagalaw nina Mary Allen Asuncion, Ravelyn Emerald Dar Juan, at Cian Jes Avendaño, at si Mary Allen Asuncion naman sa Ahas. Hindi rin magpapahuli si Ravelyn Emerald Dar Juan sa pagbibigay-buhay sa tauhang si Gumamela.

Para naman sa grupong sining-biswal, pinangunahan ito ni Aina Ramolete, ang direktor at isang alumni ng UPIS. Isa rin siya sa mga mangguguhit at pangkalahatang production designer ng dula. Nilikha naman ni Clariz Caingat ang mga tauhan sa istorya, at binuhay ni Napoleon B. Rivera Jr. ang mga bidang papet. Si Steven Tansiongco naman ang nagsilbing graphics and video designer, habang si Gabo Tolentino ang tumayo bilang lights designer.

Sandali, mayroon pa! Hindi rin malilimutan ang mga sumulat at bumuo ng nakatutuwang awit na sina Arvy Dimaculangan, ang music and sound designer na galing ding UPIS, at si Jessamae Gabon, ang music composer. Naging boses ng batang prinsipe si Kherwind Zane Duron, habang isinatinig naman ni Ron Capinding ang Kuwentista. Ngunit, tandaan: marami pang mahuhusay na kaibigang sa likod nitong tanghalan!

Kung nais niyo pang tangkilikin ang kanilang mga proyekto, may publikasyon inilimbag ang Teatro ukol sa kanilang proseso ng pagbuo ng dula! Naku, hindi niyo ito nanaising palampasin! Ayon sa playwright, inaanyayahan nila tayong basahin ang kanilang librong pinamagatang “Ang Paglalakbay ni Prinsipe Bahaghari,” sa Philippine Writers Series ng UP Press at Likhaan: UP Institute of Creative Writing. Matatagpuan ang kanilang teatro sa Amelia-Lapeña Bonifacio Theatre sa Quezon City at maaari niyo ring bisitahin ang kanilang social media sa Instagram (@mulatpuppets) at Facebook (Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas).

MGA TALANG NAGNININGNING

Naramdaman sa buong dula ang kahalagahan ng mga relasyong ito at ang pagkakabuklod natin sa isa’t isa. Sa katotohanan, unang nagkaroon ng anyo ang istorya mula sa kakilala ni Gonzales na kapwa-manlilikha sa UP, at kamag-anak din pala ng isa sa kaniyang mga unofficial mentor sa sining ng dulaan.

Makikita din ang temang ito sa direksyon ni Direk Aina. Ninais niyang gawing isang pagbibigay-pugay sa ating mga mahal sa buhay ang dula. Halimbawa nito ang kaniyang lola na nagbigay ng inspirasyon para sa tauhang si Kwentista, gayundin ang kaniyang kaibigang si Edel, na isa nang talang kumikislap sa kalangitan. Bukod dito, handog din ng direktor ang kwento sa ating mga hindi malilimutang panahon ng kabataan na nananalaytay pa rin sa ating mga puso at diwa.

HALINA’T SIMULA NA NATIN ANG ATING PAGLAKBAY!

Pagdating sa mismong dula, aba, pakiramdam namin ay bumalik kami sa aming pagkabata! Hindi ito dahil sinasabi naming pambata lang ang mga papet! Kundi dahil tunay na kahanga-hanga ang mga larawan at tagpo ng mismong palabas.

Maliit ang entablado ng Teatrong Mulat, gayunpaman, hindi ito naging hadlang sa mga ipinamalas na sining biswal at set design. Ang mismong tanghalan ay binubuo ng iba’t ibang hugis at istruktura na yari sa mga piraso ng katsa at kahoy. Gamit ang projector, inilapat ang mga larawan, salita, shadow puppets, at iba pang special effects na ipinakita sa teatro. Sa bandang gitna, may makikitang bilugang butas na naging sentro sa mga eksenang itinanghal. Gayundin, hindi nagmistulang maliit ang espasyo at nagawa nilang pagalawin ang mga papet habang sila’y nagbibiruan at nagsasayawan sa entablado. Ang lahat ng mga elementong ito ay nagbunga sa isang nakamamanghang pagtatanghal.

MGA PAPET NA LIKHA, NAKATUTUWA!

Ay, ang mga papet! Ang ating mga bida, hindi lang sa kwento kundi sa buong dula! Gawa sa rattan ang mga papet at kadalasa’y braso, ulo, at binti lamang ang gumagalaw na parte ng kanilang katawan. At isa pa, hindi sila nakapirmi lang sa isang pwesto! Sa isang papet, tatlong papetir ang nagmamando upang maging malaya ang ating mga kaibigan sa paggamit ng buong entablado. Kaya kahit hindi nagbabago ang ekspresyon ng kanilang mukha, punong-puno pa rin ng buhay ang mga papet. Isa sa mga paborito namin ay ang Pusa dahil tunay ngang malapusa kung gumalaw ito mula sa paglalakad hanggang sa pagkamot sa sariling katawan gamit ang mga paa, hindi mo mapipigilan ang sariling mapatili sa tuwa!

Nakuha naman ang loob ng mga manonood mula sa pagsasatinig sa mga tauhan pati na ng mga orihinal na kantang pinatugtog sa dula. Ubod ng husay! Talagang bibilib ka sa mga madamdaming boses sa kanilang pagpapahayag ng mga linya ng mga karakter! Kahit na medyo makaluma ang estilo ng kanilang dayalogo, hahalakhak ka pa rin sa binibitawan nilang mga biro—lalo na sa mga biro ng Kuwentista! Masigasig ang kaniyang paglalahad ng mga kwento at punong-puno ito ng karakter. Ganoon din ang ating munting prinsipe! Tiyak na ika’y maaaliw sa usapan at kalokohang namagitan sa kanilang dalawa. Mula umpisa hanggang dulo, mapupukaw ang iyong atensyon sa magandang interaksyon ng dalawang pangunahing tauhan.

At kung ito’y kulang pa, tiyak na mapapasabay ka naman sa mga awit at alindog ng mga haring nakilala ni Prinsipe Bahaghari!

ANG KANILANG MGA KWENTO

Syempre, hindi magpapahuli ang mismong kwento ni Prinsipe Bahaghari. Ang kwento ng buong dula ay punong-puno ng emosyon, tulad ng pagmamahal at pangungulila, at mas pinaangat ito ng huling tagpo nang pinaalala nila sa atin na kailangan natin magparaya at huwag ibaon ang sarili sa dalamhati. Makikita sa mga papet ang kalinga ng bawat tao sa likod ng produksyon dahil nais nilang iparamdam, ika nga ng prinsipe, na binabago tayo ayon sa pagmamahal na ibinibigay sa atin. Sa huli, ang inyong samahan at oras na ginugugol para sa isa’t isa ang nagpapabukod-tangi sa inyo mula sa iba.

Pinalalim pa ito ng paggunita at dedikasyon sa wakas ng pagtatanghal—“Para Kay Edel.” Ramdam mo na ibinuhos ng Teatrong Mulat ang kanilang pagmamahal at taos-pusong pagsisikap para lamang ihandog ang dula sa isang kaibigang wala na sa ating piling. Naging malamlam man ang pagpapatuloy, hinangad nilang maipakilala sa mga tao ang mahal na kaibigan, na tulad ni Prinsipe Bahaghari, maraming naituro at binago sa kanila. Gaya nga sa dula, sila’y tumitingala sa mga bituwin sa kalangitan, hinihiling na sana’y nakauwi at nakakapagpahinga na ang kanilang kaibigan.

SA MULING PAGKIKITA, KAIBIGAN!

Masasabi naming binago kami ng Teatro sa ipinamalas nilang talento at sa paghandog sa amin ng aliw at pagmamahal. Talagang nanaisin mong balikan ang mga tinahak na mga planeta at kamustahin ang mga kaibigang nabuo sa kwento ng batang prinsipe! Kaya, mga kaibigan, kayo’y aming iniimbitahan na kamustahin ang mga makata at manlilikha ng Teatrong Mulat! Hindi-hinding niyo ito pagsisisihan. UPIS commemorates Martial Law

The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) joined to hold the UP Day of Remembrance in the UPIS 7-12 building last September 21, 2023.

Based on the online announcement OP 2023-01, the UPIS community was called to participate in the event in accordance with UP Memo No. PAJ 23-28. This event was intended to spread awareness of the horrors wreaked from Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s imposition of Martial Law decades earlier, as well as to share the UPIS voice and stand on the issue, stated by the UPIS Officer-in-charge Principal Diana Caluag.

The event started with the assembly of the grades 3-6 students at the 3-6 lobby and quadrangle and with grades 7-12 students at the 7-12 ramp area. A countdown was held before a minute of noise barrage, symbolizing the widespread protest and opposition during the Martial Law to honor the victims and survivors, this was then followed by a moment of silence.

The UPIS Social Studies Department and the Pamunuan ng Kamag-Aral (PKA) led the program and read the joint statement written with the UP College of Education. The UPIS Media Center also shared their statement and expressed their pledge to take part in rising up against historical denialism.

A controversial topic the speeches emphasized was the removal of the name “Marcos” on the subject “Diktaduryang Marcos,” in which has lead up to instilling ignorance in the country. To this, the UPIS Media Center stated that “It only proves how determined the Marcoses are to absolve themselves of their own crimes, to wash the blood off from their hands.”

In addition, the UP College of Education with UPIS posted on their Facebook page how it has a “political motive,” continuing, “If this is indeed the intention, then this directive deprives our students of the truth that will help them govern our society and nation properly in the generations to come.”

From the statements, students were reminded that this height in the country’s unjust state over the last 50 years should be revisited but disrecurred. As the chant the UPIS MC initiated, “Never again, never again, never again to Martial Law!” echoed through the high school building walls this day. // by Zaeda Wadi

OPINION: Baling Balita: Ang Pagpokus sa Showbiz News ng Midyang Pilipino

Alam mo bang walang nakuhang wreath sympathy flowers si Ogie Diaz mula kina Liza Soberano at Enrique Gil noong burol ng kaniyang ina? Noong Holy Week Break, nabalitaan mo bang in-upload ni Barbie Forteza sa kaniyang Instagram ang bikini photos kasama ng kasintahang si Jak Roberto sa Panglao, Bohol? Isa pa, narinig mo ba ang kahilingan ni Ellen Adarna na magkaroon ng isang “masaya at maayos na relasyon” ang ex-boyfriend niyang si John Lloyd Cruz at ang kasalukuyan nitong kinakasama na si Isabel Santos? Pero nabalitaan mo rin bang labis na nakapokus ang mga peryodista sa personal na buhay ng mga artista?

Kapansin-pansin na napupuno ng kwentong showbiz ang headlines at segment news ng mga tanyag na news program gaya ng TV Patrol ng ABS-CBN News at 24 Oras ng GMA News. Naging laman ng kanilang balita ang mga personal na isyu, gaya ng hiwalayan ng mga artista, pag-unfollow sa social media, pati na ang mga bagong relasyon. Sa hanay ng mga istoryang itinuturing na “balita,” alin ang may pakinabang para sa publiko? Ano nga naman ang maidudulot sa atin kung ikinasal, nag-away, naaksidente, lumipat, nanganak, o nagbakasyon ang mga sinusubaybayan nating artista?

Una sa lahat, ang showbiz o “show business” ay nakatuon sa buhay ng mga sikat na tao at iba’t ibang porma ng entertainment na nakaiimpluwensiya sa kultura’t madla. Sinasabing ang pagbabalita tungkol sa mga sikat na personalidad ay may kakayahang pumawi ng stress kaya malimit itong balik-balikan. Kung gayon, hindi na kataka-takang maging sentro ito ng mga kumpanya sapagkat ito ay isang halimbawa ng matalinong pagnenegosyo.

Ang balitang showbiz ay lubos ding tinatangkilik sa iba’t ibang panig ng daigdig. Tulad sa Estados Unidos, naitala noong 2007 na 40% ng kanilang publiko ang nagsabing mas nakatuon sa midya ang balita tungkol sa celebrity news at Hollywood stars. Ito ang ibinabalita habang kasagsagan ng iba’t ibang isyu—gaya ng digmaan sa Iraq, pulitika, at krimen. Ayon pa rito, hindi rin gaanong naiuulat ang mga isyung pang-edukasyon, pangkalusugan, at ekonomiya. Isa namang artikulo ang nagtampok na kinahihiligan ng mga tao ang balitang Bollywood kung saan pinatingkad ang pwesto ng mga tinedyer sa midya ng India. Samakatuwid, nagkakatulad din ang mga bansa pagdating sa lagay ng kanilang pag-uulat sa midya.

Sa Pilipinas, buhay din ng mga artista ang laman ng mga balita. Nakita noong dekada ‘80 ang pagyabong ng mga palabas at balita tungkol sa entertainment industry na tuluyang “nagpabago sa cultural landscape” ng bansa. Hanggang nitong 2022, marami naman ang nag-search sa Google tungkol sa aspeto ng entertainment na nagpapakita ng patuloy na interes ng mga Pilipino sa larangang ito. Ilan sa mga hinanap nila ay ang mga bagong pelikulang Disney at k-drama, mga manlalaro ng basketball tulad ni Ricci Rivero, at mga popular na tao sa mundo gaya nina Johnny Depp, Cara Delevingne, at Ahn Hyo-seop. Dito, maaaring mahinuha na ang mga ganitong klase ng pag-uulat ay malapit sa mga tao sapagkat nais nilang makapagpalagayang loob ang isang artista sa pamamagitan ng paglubog ng sarili sa mga balitang showbiz na nagbibigay-daan sa pagpapagaan ng kanilang mga pinagdadaanan.

Dahil sa lumalawak na saklaw ng balitang entertainment sa iba’t ibang porma ng midya, mas madalas nitong napapaligiran ang mga tao. Ayon sa pag-aaral, kabilang ang balitang showbiz at celebrity gossip sa “Circles of Concern”—mga bagay na hindi kontrolado ng mambabasa pero mas binibigyan ng “reaksyon.” Kilala ang may taglay ng katauhang ito bilang “reactive” o tumutugon nang walang pagkilos. Ang ganitong midya na nakasalalay sa reaksyon o magiging damdamin ng mambabasa ay maaaring ng makaaapekto sa inisiyatibo nilang solusyunan ang isang isyu. Isa pa, maaari ring mahubog ang ganitong pag-uugali sa mga usaping may kinalaman sa lagay ng kanilang kababayan. Kaya naman, imbis na aktwal na tumulong sa naghihirap, hanggang sa pag-like sa social media na lamang ang nagagawa ng taumbayan. Walang kongkretong aksyon na pinaplano o isinasagawa. Dahil sa pagtuon sa personal na buhay ng mga artista, nalilimitahan nito ang kamalayan ng mamamayan na masabayan ang mga mahahalagang pangyayari sa lipunan. Samakatuwid, posibleng hindi maging produktibo ang resulta ng kamalayan nila ukol dito.

Kaya’t bilang mga tagapagbalita, mahalaga ang pagiging responsable sa pagpili ng mga kuwentong ibabahagi. Mas mainam na isantabi ang mga walang kabuluhang intriga; sa halip, dapat bigyang-pansin ang mga isyung may malawak na implikasyon sa lipunan tulad ng karapatan ng mga manggagawa sa industriya ng showbiz, epekto ng showbiz sa kultura at pag-uugali ng mga Pilipino, at iba pang mga usaping kaugnayan ng lipunan at ekonomiya. O hindi kaya nama’y maaari ring itampok ang artistry ng isang artista kaysa sa kaniyang kasikatan. Anu’t anuman, kailangang bigyang-pansin ang pangangalap at pagsusuri sa mga impormasyong may kinalaman sa panahon, presyo ng bilihin, COVID, at iba pa. Hindi ba’t layon ng isang dyornalist na pagtuunan ng pansin ang mga isyung bumabagabag sa bayan?

Bukod sa pagbigay ng malalim at tamang anggulo sa mga kwento, mahalagang maipakita rin nila ang analisis ng isang balita. Kung gayon, kinakailangan nilang gamitin ang kapangyarihan upang maipaunawa sa mambabasa ang balitang artista sa pagsalaysay nito. Halimbawa, maaari nila itong ilatag bilang leksyon, inspirasyon, o gabay para sa masa. Sa halip na maghatid lamang ng impormasyon tungkol sa industriya ng showbiz, maaaring ang ipamahagi ay isang makabuluhang kuwento mula sa buhay ng mga kilalang personalidad. Maaari ring maging paksa ang kwento ng isang artista na nagtagumpay sa kabila ng mga pagsubok na kinakaharap. Sa ganitong paraan, mas mapalilitaw ang danas ng determinasyon nila; magsisilbing inspirasyon ang ganitong klase ng balita sa ibang tao, at hindi pawang mga life updates lang.

Lumulubha na ang sakit ng pamamahayag sa Pilipinas: ang pagbibigay-tuon sa mga pang-showbiz na balita ay binabago ang tunay na diwa ng dyornalismo. Unang patunay: nagpopokus na lalo ang lokal na balitang midya sa mga katuwaan at personalang nagaganap sa likod ng industriya at pag-aarte. Kung ano ang mas sikat, ito ang mas palalaguin ng mga taong midya. Ikalawa, dahil ihinalintulad sa isang pag-aaral na ang usaping artista ay produksyon ng kanilang mga kwento, maaaring palalain ng ganitong paraan ng pag-uulat ang kapitalismo sa hinaharap. Syempre, sino ba namang aayaw sa tone-toneladang kitang kalakip ng kontrobersyal at tao-sa-tao na mga usapin? At kung walang agarang sahod na makukuha mula sa isang artikulo, madali pa rin nilang mabibingwit ang pampublikong pansin ng mga susubaybay sa susunod pang mga ulat.

Sa kabuuan, parte man ang showbiz at entertainment ng kultura ng mga Pilipino, mahalaga na baguhin ang diskarte sa pag-uulat sa industriya ng showbiz sa tulong ng paggamit ng midya bilang magbigay ng mahalagang kabatiran sa kasalukuyan. Sa pamamagitan ng pagtatampok ng mga kwento’t isyung may kabuluhan na may malawak na implikasyon sa lipunan, maaari pang mabago ang pananaw sa showbiz na hindi lamang ito para sa negosyo; isa rin itong pagkukunan ng mga naratibo ng aral at gabay na agarang nasasagap ng mga mambabasa. Sa gayong paraan, naitataguyod pa rin ang esensya ng isang mambabalita kahit sa pag-uulat ng mga kwentong showbiz.

Nakakabahala na ang porma ng pag-uulat ngayon ay nagtatangkang lumihis sa gampanin ng dyornalismo, sapagkat dapat sana’y tumutulong ito sa pagbibigay at pagbubusisi ng kritikal at tamang impormasyon para sa mga mahahalagang pagpapasyang ginagawa ng sambayanan. Kaya habang maaga pa, kinakailangang maisulong ang pagkakaroon ng reporma sa pamamaraan ng pag-uulat ng midya sa Pilipinas, upang maitulak at maimulat ang mga tao sa mga balitang napapanahon at higit na kapaki-pakinabang. //nina Monique Gervacio at Zaeda Wadi

FEATURE: Women and Writing: Novel and Author Recommendations

The Lord of the Rings, The Percy Jackson Series, and The Fault in Our Stars: novels that everyone—avid reader or not—knows. If you noticed, all of these books are written by men. But what about the women, who have also made impressive contributions to today’s literature? 

There’s The Hunger Games Series, The Harry Potter Series, and The Twilight Series. But if you dig deeper, there are a million more excellent books by women that deserve just as much recognition and appreciation. In celebration of Women’s Month this March, we compiled a list of a few praiseworthy titles written by women, and a handful of admirable female authors.

Honorable Mentions: Four Fabulous Female Authors As a bonus, we also have a few honorable mentions of female authors that made significant contributions to the writing world.

The Bronte Sisters Writers, teachers, and more—Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte are three sisters who were raised in an English town during the 1800s. The Brontes spent their youth penning poems, diaries, and books. They first wrote and published their works under the aliases Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. At the time, female writers were frowned upon which led to their incognito identities. They hid behind gender-neutral pseudonyms in hopes of increasing their chances of getting published. Following a long and tedious road to publication, their works later gained popularity. Some of their most famous creations are Jane Eyre (1847), Wuthering Heights (1848), and Agnes Grey (1847).

F.H. Batacan Maria Felisa H. Batacan is a Manila-based author fond of writing in the crime and mystery fiction genres. She graduated from the University of the Philippines with degrees in communication and art history. Her debut piece Smaller and Smaller Circles, the first Filipino crime novel, explores the Philippines’ justice system, the influence of religion and the church, and how society sometimes turns a blind eye to sexual abuse victims. This novel won multiple awards, including the National Book Award in 2002 and the Madrigal-Gonzalez Award in 2003.

Bebang Siy Beverly Siy, commonly known as Bebang Siy, is famous for her novels It’s a Mens World and It’s Raining Mens. Both are collections of essays that narrate Siy’s experience as a woman and tackle issues of girlhood. She also touches upon her identity as a Chinese-Filipino woman and how she struggled with it growing up. In It’s Raining Mens, the sequel to It’s a Mens World, she focuses on her journey with love and her experience as a young mother. Her straightforward and candid discussions of taboo topics surrounding women garnered praise from readers of all genders and ages. Additionally, she has a Master’s degree in Philippine Literature and a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing in Filipino, and won the Filipino Readers’ Choice Award for It’s a Mens World in 2012.

Lualhati Bautista Lualhati Bautista is the brain behind Dekada ‘70, a popular novel that tells the story of a family living in the Philippines under the Marcos dictatorship. Some of her lesser-known—but no less remarkable—novels include Bata, Bata… Pa’no Ka Ginawa?, Bulaklak sa City Jail, 'GAPÔ, and more. Her works have recurring themes of war and politics. She is known for her realism and portrayal of women’s issues in the Philippines, as well as her female protagonists who possess unwavering strength and bravery amidst difficult situations.

Broadening Horizons Female authors of all backgrounds and genres have proven that they are just as capable of writing outstanding novels as male authors. In some cases, like Bebang Siy, they also provide valuable insight on women’s experiences and perspectives. Women have been doing this for years, it’s just that they haven’t been given the limelight they deserve. So, in the spirit of Women’s Month, let’s make it a practice of giving the spotlight to women who have created and will continue to create phenomenal literary works. UPIS 7-12 holds Miting De Avance

Students and candidates for the 2023 Elections from the University of the Philippines Integrated School attended the Miting De Avance last Tuesday, May 23 at the UPIS Gym.

The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) has begun a new season of selecting student leaders to head the Pamunuan ng Kamag-Aral (PKA) and Year-Level Organizations (YLOs) for the upcoming academic year of 2023-2024.

Parties “BUKAS ALPAS!,” “cheriSCh,” and “Hayo!” were able to campaign after the face-to-face classes.

Online Miting De Avance: Freshman Association and Sophomore Association

On the other hand, the KALASAG party and Kalinaw party, running for seats on the Freshman Association (FA) and Sophomore Association (SoA) respectively, held their Miting De Avance online since students were not required to attend school as they had remote classes that day.

Below are lists of candidates for FA and SoA:

For the in-person meeting de avance, the three parties present were those running for Batch 2027's Junior Association, Batch 2026's Senior Council, and grades 7-12's Pamunuan ng Kamag-Aral. The opening remarks were given by grade 10 COMELEC student officer Rachelle Marie Bueno.

“BUKAS ALPAS!”, the running leaderboard of incoming grade 9 students, indicated their party's main projects--the Junior-Senior Promenade, a Halloween party, and a batch picnic. Several other projects were also mentioned such as mandating “Let’s Go Linis”, which is a cleaning initiative, and putting up an honesty store.

Candidates running for seats on the Senior Council, under the party “cheriSCh” shared the projects they envision such as “Tara Aral” — an in-person group study session. Presenting themselves as outgoing and committed, other initiatives were also mentioned including building a “memory wall” and a “drop box.”

Lastly, this year’s PKA aspirants named “Hayo!” presented their objectives of continuity, innovation, welfare, and involvement. The main project they intend to focus on is the annual “UPIS Days” with its sports festival, school carnival, and merchandise fair. In addition, an honesty store was proposed, as well as the leadership camp, which aims to promote cohesiveness in the school through a discussion of student leaders across grade levels.

The parties had an opportunity to introduce their running parties, present their future visions, and propose plans to enhance the school’s environment through a video presentation.

Each campaign video was then followed by an open forum wherein the candidates were asked to answer some questions from the audience. Before the event ended, Mr. Mark Joseph Euste, head of the UPIS COMELEC, gave guidelines come election day.

Elections were conducted on May 24, whereas, the official results were posted on May 29 on the UPIS PKA Facebook Page.

Batch 2024 participates in 2-week off-campus internship

University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Batch 2024 completed their 2-week off-campus internship at various sites from February 12 to 23.

Part of the Grade 12 work program is the two-week off-campus internship which aims to apply the knowledge and skills they have obtained from Kindergarten to Grade 11, to experience a real-world work environment, to understand and explore the careers they may pursue in the future, and to develop proper attitudes regarding leadership structure, employee interactions, and professionalism.

Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) Track

Grade 12 - Kalayaan, the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) track, had their work immersions at Bantayog ng mga Bayani Foundation, Interactive Children’s Literacy Program (ICLiP), M&P Creatives, and Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas. UP Diliman Information Office (DIO) and DZUP 1602, despite being within the UP campus, were also included as internship sites for the off-campus work immersion.

The sites offered internship tasks such as writing articles, creating scripts, designing social media posts and publicity materials, covering events, newscasting, hosting, observing and teaching classes, assisting video shoots, joining rehearsals, and participating in activities conducted by the sites.

Zaeda Wadi, a former UPDIO intern, shared some of the most important lessons she learned through her internship. “At the UP DIO, I learned that being attentive is such a helpful asset to have! Be it in article-writing, observing during programs, interacting with others, or following instructions, having a present mind makes things clearer—and easier. I also realized that there are various activities in UP Diliman that I can participate in! It opened more doors for me to venture that can set me on new experiences as a student and community member,” she stated.

Additionally, she talked about some of the discoveries she made through UP DIO. “UP DIO staff taught me that in the hustle of life, sharing conversations and laughs makes the office life bearable and memorable! I learned from their close bond how it is always nice, even essential, to check in daily wholesome chats with people we meet at the workplace,“ she shared.

Business and Entrepreneurship (BE) Track

Grade 12 - Kapayapaan, the Business and Entrepreneurship (BE) track, experienced working at Underdog Fitness PH, Revised Salon, Friuli Trattoria, Puff & Dough BakeLab, SGD Coffee, Street Kohi, Noki Japanese Fried Chicken, and Urban Chick for their off-campus internship.

Some of their work included taking orders from customers, cleaning and setting up the area, making orders and food products for the business, assisting in supply inventory, creating and designing social media posts, preparing financial reports, assisting in administrative-related tasks, and conducting market research.

Princess Tan, a former intern at Noki Japanese Fried Chicken, shared her thoughts on how different the off-campus internship is from completing regular coursework for classes. “The real world is less structured than the system in school. The tasks we had to do weren’t listed for us and weren’t taught to us from the very start to end. You are expected to learn the operations as you go through the work program. Additionally, mistakes would cost you more unlike in school where you’ll just get a deduction on your score,“ she said.

Applied Sciences and Engineering (ASE) Track

Grade 12 - Karangalan and Karunungan, the Applied Sciences and Engineering (ASE) track, held their internship programs at Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) - Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS), ADMU - Department of Electronics, Computer, and Communications Engineering (ECCE), ADMU - Department of Mathematics, Buri Technologies, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) - Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), DENR - Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI), DOST - Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), LCI Envi Corporation, New Era General Hospital, Smile Studio Dental, and Wilson Hobby Studio.

Some specific tasks given by the sites consisted of conducting playtests, exploring and programming with Artificial Intelligence (AI), attending workshops and seminars, testing websites, creating courses on websites, performing Test Case Documentation, listing products and packaging of companies, managing and operating with information and cybersecurity, weather research and reporting, assisting in dental-related work, input and documentation of dental procedures and prices, assisting in tech support with 2D software, 3D printing, and attending discussions and seminars held by the sites.

Enjoce Lampa, a former intern at ADMU - Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS), shared the skills he was able to develop or enhance through his experience. “The skill I used the most during the internship was definitely my knowledge in programming. I think I already had pretty good programming [or] coding knowledge from my experiences but this internship further enhanced my skills because I was able to use it on a real project. I learned the Godot game engine and its native language, GDScript, to create our game and I think I will be using this knowledge more in the future,“ he stated.

Batch 2024 is the first batch of Grade 12 students to experience separate cycles for their off-campus and on-campus internship since the pandemic. Last year, they finished their on-campus internship, which lasted from December 4 to 15. //by Mira Leaño and Ria Bautista
