Cameron and the Band - Clarinet, Saxophone, Flute

Cameron honed his artistic skills by studying and performing with some of the finest Australian and international jazz educators including James Morrison, Carl Mackay, Matt Jodrell, Angela Davis, David Jones, Troy Roberts, Ross Irwin and Sam Anning. He has also been given the opportunity to study under several notable international artists who guided Cameron in his musicianship, including Jeff Clayton (USA), Wycliffe Gordon (USA), Julien Bliss (UK) and Harry Skoler (USA).

Cameron’s main artistic influences come from the very roots of jazz music; traditional jazz, early swing, and big bands. He has cultivated this passion throughout high school and university, playing in concert bands and tertiary level big bands, as well as creating and leading several small groups that focus on encompassing the sound that was born out of New Orleans.

SHUN FEAR AND COURAGEOUSLY PRESS ON

One of the major tactics of Satan is to use difficult situations to create fear in us and thus immobilise our witness. For example, during the 9/11 attack in USA, Heather Mercer and Dayna Curry were being held in a prison in Afghanistan. In an interview with Christianity Today magazine on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, Heather Mercer said, “There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about it. God sent me to prison to set me free. I don’t think I realised how much fear I actually had in my life until I had to confront some of my deepest, darkest fears. When I first set out to go to Afghanistan, I knew it might cost me my life to reach Muslims with the love of Jesus. Then I had this opportunity to face that fear of, ‘What would I do if someone tried to kill me for sharing the gospel?’ God made Himself known in such a profound way that now, what do I have to fear?”

In Papua New Guinea (PNG), Wycliffe’s Sue Ambrose was out for a walk on the 4th of February, 2009. She was talking to the Lord about people, issues and life. As she continued her walk, she read memory verses from three Gospels that say, “Whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

The slapping sound of bare feet running on packed earth causes her to turn around to see a crazed PNG man charge her with a large machete-like knife raised murderously above his head. After a quick altercation and feeling as though she was dying, Sue was rushed to the medical clinic where friends and co-workers were shocked to see her in such grave condition: many abrasions; a damaged hand; a puncture wound near the sternum just below the diaphragm and lungs; and the knife still stuck fast in her hip.

Sue was remarkably calm through the process and felt no pain. Once stabilised, she was transferred to medical facilities in Australia. While in hospital, God gave Sue a clear vision of an angel, “A big warrior kind of guy that was eight or ten feet tall with his sword raised, saying, ‘No, that is enough! I am not going to let you kill her.’” Sue says, “That really opened my eyes to the whole spiritual realm; that this man was part of Satan’s attacks on us, on the training centre and on the work of SIL.”

Two and a half weeks after being air-lifted out of the country, Sue returned to her ministry in PNG. The Wycliffe magazine, Word Alive reported: That seemingly simple act proves to be a strong counter strike to the enemy—a living sermon calling others to shun fear and courageously press on in their respective callings. “I don’t think that I ever considered not going back,” says Sue. “God has given us the strength to return and it has spoken volumes to people.” Sue models an attitude that we all must grasp, the article concluded. Let fear not rule!

I’m Fyo or Percy or The Guy With [Usually] Purple Hair Who Knows A Lot About History

I’m now 26 (as of writing this, today was my birthday)

Midwest USA. My school is a regional campus of a larger well-known university and I get stupidly jealous of anyone who goes to a fancier school than mine lmao.

I have a BA in history and I ended up back at my old school working on finishing a BA in English, language concentration, because I had nothing better to do and needed to learn some stuff.

Next semester I’ll be taking college algebra, intro to literary theory, and Old English.

My main interests are the Middle Ages (favorite figures to talk/cry about/study are Richard II, Anne of Bohemia, Charles d’Orleans, Isabelle de Valois, Anne of Brittany, Margery Kempe, John Wycliffe), computers, and digital humanities. I want to help use computers to study history, and make research and learning more accessible to everyone.

I have massive problems with imposter syndrome and other forms of academia-induced self-loathing, so I try to find resources for helping myself and others with stuff like that.

I’m most interested in practical stuff, like study tips and research and writing resources and cutsy journals and notes scare me.

My main project is translating the Middle English poetry of Charles d’Orleans.

I’m currently trying to brush up on my math so I can at some point take the GRE.

I took German and was pretty good at it and I’m currently teaching myself French

“¡Es como cuando éramos niños! Los más pequeños solían tocar música, entretener a los viejos, bajo la luz de la luna.” 

Al oír tales comentarios de muchos viejos el pastor Josías Djenné respondió con: “¡Sí! Estos nuevos cantos bissa nos han animado. En nuestra iglesia algunos no entienden los cantos ‘extranjeros,’ especialmente los viejos. Pero cuando cantamos con el calabash,* incluso los viejos vienen a la iglesia; y entienden que Dios está vivo porque escuchan la música.” 

Por muchos años el pastor Djenné había deseado ver a su gente bissa de Burkina Faso, África Occidental, alcanzada con el mensaje de la palabra de Dios. “Especialmente me preocupaban los ancianos,” dice. “Ahora esta nueva clase de música bissa esta impactando a toda nuestra comunidad.” Encantado con estos “conciertos,” vespertinos, la voz de este pastor de las Asambleas de Dios reflejaba entusiasmo casi infantil. 

Junto con hombres de otras cuatro iglesias del área bissa, el pastor Djenné había trabajado con Ruud y Connie Hidden de Wycliffe Netherlands para traducir el Nuevo Testamento al bissa. Mientras ponderaba el asunto, una joven estadounidense llegó a ser parte de la solución a su dilema. Mary Hendershott, una etnomusicóloga Wycliffe, con regularidad realizaba talleres de música con diferentes grupos de lenguas en Burkina Faso. ese año Mary realizó un taller musical para los bissa. “Hasta entonces,” dice Mary, “la iglesia bissa había usado himnos y su música francesa prestada de un grupo étnico más grande y cercano. Quedé encantada al escuchar el informe entusiasta del pastor Djenné de lo que había sucedido:”

Algunos ahora vienen a la iglesia sólo para oír la música.” 

Hace poco Mary volvió para ayudar en otro taller. La recibieron las noticias de que “muchos de nuestra gente bissa ha escuchado y venido al Señor.” Una persona informó: “¡A esta gente le encantan estos cantos! Cuando tocamos las melodías con el calabash, la gente simplemente no puede seguir de largo.” 

Alguien añadió: “Una noche el jefe y los demás empezaron a danzar allí mismo en el patio del jefe. Querían que tocáramos música toda la noche.” 

El pastor Djenné concluye: “¡Esta una nueva manera de adorar está aquí para quedarse!” 

En el año 2000 se envió el Nuevo Testamento bissa para su impresión después de que el pastor Djenné y otros hicieron una revisión final. Representantes de la iglesia firmaron una carta aprobando la traducción y prometieron hacer todo lo posible para facilitar su uso en las iglesias. “Ese fue un momento gozoso para el pastor Djenné y para todos nosotros,” dice Rudd. 

Hoy el pastor Djenné predica a su congregación usando uno de los diez mil ejemplares impresos del Nuevo Testamento bissa. Al hacerlo nota con alabanza a Dios el número de ancianos allí; debido a que “¡Ellos escucharon la música!”

*El calabash, una calabaza grande, también se conoce como calabaza de botella o calabaza. Los bissa cortan la calabaza por la mitad, la secan, y la hacen un instrumento musical. La ponen boca abajo sobre el suelo y la tocan o golpean con los puños.

Lịch Sử Tiền Cải Chánh của Các Ấn Bản Thánh Kinh Từ năm 1,400 trước công nguyên đến 1,400 ==== Phần lớn của câu chuyện làm thế nào chúng ta có được bản Thánh Kinh Anh Ngữ, tự nó chính là câu chuyện về Cuộc Cải Chánh Tin Lành vào cuối thế kỷ 14 với John Wycliffe. Văn bản Thánh Kinh xuất hiện sớm nhất thường được cho là "Ngũ Kinh", tức là năm sách đầu tiên của Môi-se: Sáng Thế, Xuất hành, Lê-vi, Dân số và Phục truyền… Mặc dầu có một số chứng cứ khoa học chứng tỏ sách của Gióp, thời Cựu Ước, mới thực sự là sách đầu tiên của Thánh Kinh. Thánh Kinh Cựu Ước được viết bằng tiếng Hê-bơ-rơ cổ, về cơ bản, nó khác với tiếng Hê-bơ-rơ ngày nay. Các ký thuật này được chuyển tiếp qua nhiều thế hệ trong suốt nhiều ngàn năm, chúng được viết trên các cuộn da thú, thường là da chiên, nhưng đôi khi là da nai hoặc da bò. Giống vật nào mà người Do Thái cho là không tinh sạch, như heo chẳng hạn, thì không bao giờ được sử dụng để làm các cuộn da.

Toàn bộ Torah, nếu không cuộn lại, có thể dài đến 150 bộ (feet). Vì mỗi con chiên chỉ dài khoảng từ hai đến ba bộ, nên toàn bộ Torah được thực hiện phải cần đến cả một bầy chiên. Những viên ký lục người Do Tháikhó nhọc chép ra từng bộ Kinh là những người cầu toàn. Trong khi sao chép, nếu họ mắc lỗi, thì dầu là lỗi nhỏ nhất, chẳng hạn như khi lỡ chép hai ký tự của một chữ dính vào nhau, thì họ sẽ tiêu hủy toàn bộ mảnh da đó (từ ba đến bốn cột chữ trước chỗ có lỗi) và tiêu hủy luôn miếng da trước đó, vì đã chạm vào miếng da có chứa lỗi. Giáo hội đã làm giàu trên sự ngu dốt áp đặt này trong suốt 1000 năm. Thời kỳ từ năm 400 đến 1400 được biết đến với cái tên "Thời Trung Cổ Đen Tối". Giáo hoàng Leo X đã thiết lập một thông lệ có tên là "bán bùa xá tội" như một cách để tống tiền mọi người. Ông hứa ban sự tha tội với một giá tiền tương đối nhỏ. Cuộc Cải Cách Tin Lành đó chỉ nhắm đến một điều: đem Lời của Đức Chúa Trời vào tay của quần chúng trở lại, trong chính tiếng mẹ đẻ của họ, nhờ đó sự thối nát của giáo hội sẽ bị phơi bày và sứ điệp về sự cứu rỗi chỉ có ở trong Đấng Christ, qua Thánh Kinh, và chỉ bởi đức tin, sẽ được rao giảng trở lại.

CREW is an acronym for Culturally Relevant Expressions of Worship.40:4 is in reference to Isaiah 40:4 - "Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low, the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain."

We are worshipers, recruiting and discipling worshipers using culturally relevant expressions. Our ministry has 3 main aspects:

1. Teaching/Training on Worship and Creative Workshops.

2. Developing and producing culturally relevant resource material, with a focus on material for children.

3. Outreach to both the churched and unchurched, using culturally relevant expressions.

CREW 40:4 was founded by Jo-Ann Richards. Driven by her passion for missions, holistic worship, and culturally-relevant liturgy, Jo-Ann Richards has been delivering lectures, seminars and workshops in countries in West Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean, since 1999. 

Her Heart Music Seminars equip participants to appreciate and integrate language and music forms from their own cultural traditions, into the corporate worship experience of the local church. 

In her Composition Workshops, Jo-Ann leads groups through a song writing process that yields recordings of new Scripture-based songs for congregational worship, as well as a new-found understanding of the role of music, language and cultural authenticity in Biblical worship.

As an accredited worker with the Missionary Church Association in Jamaica, and a former member of the Wycliffe Bible Translators (Caribbean), Jo-Ann is uniquely equipped to play this role of teacher, trainer and motivator. She has accumulated some 30 years of involvement and leadership in music ministry, Christian education, youth work, and missions mobilization, in her home country of Jamaica and around the world. Her experience as a music teacher spans 25 years at the elementary and high school levels, as well as teaching and directing the operations of her own private music teaching studio.

In addition, Jo-Ann has been involved as a singer in various gospel groups in Jamaica, has recorded and released a 19-track CD of mainly original songs, testimonies and Scripture, and is a published songwriter, with some 15 songs, including material specifically written for children, to her credit.

Jo-Ann is also a faculty member with the Haggai Institute, where she has prepared and taught the course “The Biblical Mandate for Evangelism and Missions” at the Singapore campus. She is a member of the Society of Ethnomusicologists (SEM), and the Global Ethnodoxology Network (GEN).

SHUN FEAR AND COURAGEOUSLY PRESS ON But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” 1 Peter 3:14

One of the major tactics of Satan is to use difficult situations to create fear in us and thus immobilize our witness. For example, during the 9/11 attack in USA, Heather Mercer and Dayna Curry were being held in a prison in Afghanistan. In an interview with Christianity Today magazine on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, Heather Mercer said, “There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about it. God sent me to prison to set me free. I don’t think I realized how much fear I actually had in my life until I had to confront some of my deepest, darkest fears. When I first set out to go to Afghanistan, I knew it might cost me my life to reach Muslims with the love of Jesus. Then I had this opportunity to face that fear of, ‘What would I do if someone tried to kill me for sharing the gospel?’ God made Himself known in such a profound way that now, what do I have to fear?”[1]

In Papua New Guinea (PNG), Wycliffe’s Sue Ambrose was out for a walk on February 4th, 2009. She was talking to the Lord about people, issues and life. As she continued her walk, she read memory verses from three Gospels that say, “Whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

The slapping sound of bare feet running on packed earth causes her to turn around to see a crazed PNG man charge her with a large machete-like knife raised murderously above his head. After a quick altercation and feeling as though she was dying, Sue was rushed to the medical clinic where friends and co-workers were shocked to see her in such grave condition: many abrasions; a damaged hand; a puncture wound near the sternum just below the diaphragm and lungs; and the knife still stuck fast in her hip.

Sue was remarkably calm through the process and felt no pain. Once stabilized, she was transferred to medical facilities in Australia. While in hospital, God gave Sue a clear vision of an angel, “A big warrior kind of guy that was eight or ten feet tall with his sword raised, saying, ‘No, that is enough! I am not going to let you kill her.’” Sue says, “That really opened my eyes to the whole spiritual realm; that this man was part of Satan’s attacks on us, on the training centre and on the work of SIL.”

Two and a half weeks after being air-lifted out of the country, Sue returned to her ministry in PNG. The Wycliffe magazine, Word Alive reported: That seemingly simple act proves to be a strong counterstrike to the enemy—a living sermon calling others to shun fear and courageously press on in their respective callings. “I don’t think that I ever considered not going back,” says Sue. “God has given us the strength to return and it has spoken volumes to people.” Sue models an attitude that we all must grasp, the article concluded. Let fear not rule![2]

RESPONSE: Today I will not allow the enemy to use the tactic of fear against me.

UK Prisons to receive copies of the WfWBC! 

At the end of September, the trustees of a UK charity that focuses on ministering to the inmates in UK prisons gathered and made the decision to supply all UK prisons with copies of the Word for Word Bible Comic! These will be available through the prisons' chaplaincy to provide inmates with an easy and accessible way to read and understand the Gospel and the other Biblical books we have covered so far.  Serving this community is something we are really passionate about but until now have had limited access to. We believe the hard-hitting action and un-sugarcoated presentation of Gods truth will really help them engage with the Word in a new way! It is the early stages of making these arrangements and supplying the books, but I'd love you to join us in prayer. We'll be praying that these books will really make an impact on these people who need the transformative power of the gospel so keenly.

The Gospel of Matthew in Vanuatu!!?!?

During September we have made arrangements with a Wycliffe missionary group in the Republic of Vanuatu for them to create a version of the Gospel of Matthew in the local language.

These small tropical islands have just 5,000 local language speakers. This group can now freely produce versions of the comic to help communicate the gospel in word and image.

Firstly, can I say a big thank you for all those who prayed last month about the prisons and the other languages, as you can see it really helped!  We have yet other alternative language opportunities to pray for, so please intercede for us there.  Our big focus this month is going to be finding a USA distributor. Please pray the right company will agree to carry the books and do a good job of marketing them and getting them out to suppliers.
