Disrupting the Rich List: How Wealth Creation Avenues Have Shifted
At the start of 2020, there were many changes in economic and geopolitical scenarios which led to a change in the investment strategy altogether. New avenues of wealth creation were discovered such as cryptocurrencies, metaverse-related products, blockchain startups, tech startups, etc. These avenues not only made the Rich list longer but also changed the demographics of that list entirely. There are more GenZs and millennials included on the list and more billionaires that have added wealth in the tech boom.
The Great Indian Rich List
India is not behind in this Rich list among countries. As per Capgemini Wealth Report 2022, The HNWI wealth grew by 11.6% in India while the global wealth only grew by 8%. The number of individuals with INR 1000 crore wealth has increased by 62% in India over the last five years, according to IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022. Out of these individuals, 67% were self-made. The growth was mainly due to increased global confidence, well-managed liquidity by RBI, encouraging government policies and rapid digitalization.
The new entrants in the Rich list made their place through chemicals and financial services and pharma leading the way has contributed 126 entrants to the list. The demographics of the Rich list further changed than last year as the youngest on the list is aged 19, four years younger than the youngest last year.
Wealth Trends in India
India has had unequal wealth distribution over the past two decades. This inequality gap has been rising till 2015 after which it started to improve. If you look at the Gini Coefficient which measures this wealth inequality gap, it has been declining since 2015. A higher Gini Coefficient means higher inequality. As per the Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report 2022, the Gini coefficient of India was 83.3 while in 2021 it has been reduced to 82.3.
Regarding the number of millionaires, the Credit Suisse Report estimates that the number of millionaires in India will double to around 1.6 million in 2026. Though India is facing headwinds from global cues, it has still managed to show much more resilience. Despite stock prices falling by almost 9% in the first half of 2022, the wealth per adult saw a splendid rise in India. The average annual growth rate of wealth per adult for the world since 2000 has been 5% while for India, the same has been 8.8%.
Dynamics of Private Wealth in India
The rise in per capita income and changes in the lifestyle of millennials have provided an impetus to the wealth management industry. The affluent middle-class population in India is rising along with HNI and Ultra-HNI populations. The growth forecast for 2020-25 of the HNI population is 75% and that of the Ultra-HNI population is 63%. There has been a paradigm shift in how Indians perceive their investments and the distribution of asset classes. More and more people are doing goal-based investments and want to spend on luxury experiences. There has been a newfound importance of alternative investments rather than parking all the money in traditional investments. This is due to a rise in risk appetite and better returns offered by these asset classes.
The Financial investable Wealth of ultra-HNIs has seen an increase in India by around 17% in 2020 as compared to 2019. Further, there is an expected increase of $0.5 trillion during the period 2020-25 as per the BCG Global Wealth Report 2021.
The Indian wealth industry is changing very fast which is making people more aware of the need to invest in alternative asset classes such as private equity. The HNIs and UHNIs have no longer limited their investment to traditional assets or even their own businesses but rather are expanding their portfolio to benefit from the country’s growth. They are doing so by investing in promising startups and growing businesses.
