Israel “targeting a building knowing it is full of humanitarian workers and their families is unconscionable”, MSF’s general director Meinie Nicolai said in a statement. “The amount of force being used in densely populated urban environments is staggering,” Nicolai said. Five MSF staff members have been killed since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza, in addition to many family members of the organisation’s staff
Gaza has become a death zone”: World Health Organization Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says “inhumane” health and humanitarian situation worsens.
Palestine Red Crescent Society warns of dire situation at al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis as Israeli siege continues for 30th day.
Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF) “outraged” by Israeli attack on MSF shelter in al-Mawasi that killed two family members of staff and injured six.
Residents of northern Gaza Strip have only animal feed to eat for past three weeks, says Ismail al-Thawabteh, head of Gaza’s government media office.
At least 29,313 Palestinians have been killed and 69,333 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7, the Health Ministry says. The death toll in Israel from the October 7 Hamas-led attacks stands at 1,139.

"When Ghana’s parliament voted to decriminalise suicide and attempted suicide in March, Prof Joseph Osafo felt a weight lift from his shoulders.
Osafo, head of psychology at the University of Ghana, had been engaged in a near 20-year battle to abolish the law – brought in by the British – which stated that anyone who attempts suicide should face imprisonment or a fine.
“It was a very good feeling. I felt like a certain burden had been removed. I was extremely elated,” he remembers. “Then the next morning, I realised we had a lot of work to do.”
Four countries decriminalised suicide in just the past year
Ghana is one of four countries to have decriminalised suicide in the past year – Malaysia, Guyana and Pakistan are the others. More could soon follow, which campaigners say is a sign of greater awareness and understanding of mental health. Kenya and Uganda have filed petitions to overturn laws and members of the UN group of Small Island Developing States have committed to decriminalise. Discussions are also being held in Nigeria and Bangladesh.
“There seems to be a domino effect taking place,” says Muhammad Ali Hasnain, a barrister from United for Global Mental Health, a group calling for decriminalisation. “As one country decriminalises suicide, others start to follow suit.”
“It is quite unusual,” adds Sarah Kline, the organisation’s chief executive. “It’s a huge sign of progress and an important step forward for the populations most at risk, as well as the countries as a whole.” ...
A large number of laws were introduced by the British during colonial rule. Suicide was decriminalised in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in the 1960s – it was never criminalised in Scotland...
The results of these punishments can be “devastating” and present “a huge barrier” to addressing the problem, says Natalie Drew, a technical officer with the mental health policy and service development team at the World Health Organization. Health experts and advocates argue that suicide should be treated as a public health issue rather than a crime.
Criminalising suicide denies people the right to access health services and discriminates against them because of something they’re experiencing, Drew adds. Research shows that in countries where suicide has been decriminalised, people can seek help for mental health and rates tend to then decline.
Next Steps
In September, the WHO is due to release a guide on decriminalising suicide for policymakers, with explanations of how countries have managed it...
“[Ghana’s decision] should have an impact on the work ongoing in other countries, especially in the Africa region,” says Osafo. Within the past couple of months, he has set up a mental health working group with representatives from about 20 African countries, and one of the biggest issues on the agenda is decriminalisation of suicide, he says. “Nigeria is active, Cameroon is active … Kenya has joined and is doing fantastic work. We have Uganda. People have been asking us how we did it.”
Since suicide was decriminalised in Malaysia last month, Anita Abu Bakar, founder and president of the Mental Illness Awareness and Support Association (Miasa), has already seen things change. Crisis response teams and helplines are expanding, and money from the mental health budget is being given to organisations who work in the community. “This is the shift we’re so happy to see,” she says. “It was such an archaic law.”
She adds: “I’m a person with lived experience. What does decriminalisation mean to people like me? We feel supported, we feel this conversation can go to a different level. Obviously decriminalisation is not the only way to prevent suicide, but it’s a big one. I’m happy for this progressive move – better late than never. I’m excited to see what happens next, not just for Malaysia but for the rest of us.”"

(btw NYT's anti china hysteria is getting journalists in india arrested)
In August 2023, The New York Times published a story “A Global Web of Chinese Propaganda Leads to a U.S. Tech Mogul”. The story investigated whether Chinese funding was being funnelled to advocacy and media organisations across the world to defend the internal authoritarianism of the Chinese state. One of the countries included was India, with a fleeting reference to an Indian digital news organisation NewsClick, which the report said “sprinkled its coverage with Chinese government talking points”.
The report did not suggest that the organisation had committed any crime – let alone sedition or terrorism against the Indian state. But on October 3, the police in Delhi swooped down on the homes of 46 people connected to NewsClick – journalists, staffers, contributors, including academics, historians, satirists – seizing their phones and laptops, subjecting them to hours of questioning, largely about their coverage of protests by farmers and by Muslim women. NewsClick’s founder and editor-in-chief Prabir Purakayastha and the head of the human resources department Amit Chakraborty were arrested under the draconian anti-terror law, the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
When asked about the police action, anonymous government officials invoked the New York Times article. Indian TV channels – nearly all of which are propaganda channels for the Modi regime – used the NYT story to frame the issue as a question of whether “press freedom” should be respected at the cost of “national sovereignty”.
[...] The NYT story has become a pretext to escalate an ongoing campaign to persecute and imprison some of India’s most courageous journalists, academics and activists on baseless charges of abetting “Maoist terrorism”. [...] NYT’s failure to separate specific issues of financial impropriety, propaganda, and political opinion from each other, I feared, would endanger the courageous work of journalists associated with NewsClick: for example, investigations into the financial scandals involving Gautam Adani, the tycoon who is known to be a close associate of the Indian Prime Minister. [...] The story had mentioned several media platforms (a YouTube channel in the US for instance) without identifying these by name, but had chosen to name NewsClick. It had cherry-picked an inoffensive and rather lame line from a NewsClick video and presented this as evidence of pro-China propaganda: “China’s history continues to inspire the working classes.” I pointed out that this is a simple statement of opinion, and cannot be construed as Chinese government propaganda.
Left-wing softness on China or Russia might harm Uyghurs or Ukrainians, and the political health of the Left itself, but this was hardly a problem for the Modi regime.

Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence appointed Patron of the International Maritime Rescue Federation
Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, the husband of Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, has been named the Patron of the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF), the world’s leading organisation for developing and improving maritime search and rescue (SAR) capabilities.
He replaces Sir Efthimios Mitropoulos, the Secretary-General Emeritus of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), who stepped down earlier this year, having been in the role since 2012.
Sir Tim holds a distinguished career as part of the UK’s Royal Navy, serving from the early 1970s upon leaving the University of Durham before retiring in 2010. His strong interest and background in maritime led to him being appointed to the Governing Council of the UK’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution in 2004, then to the Trustee Board and Chairman of the Operations Committee in 2011. He later became Deputy Chairman of the RNLI Board and, on retirement from the Board in 2020, became a Vice President.
As Patron, Sir Tim will become a leading voice and advocate for the work of the IMRF and maritime SAR organisations around the world, which continues to play a critical role in protecting and saving lives at sea.
“It is an honour to be appointed the new Patron of the IMRF, and I look forward to working closely with the organisation, its members and SAR personnel worldwide to advance the cause of safety at sea,” Sir Tim said.
Speaking about the appointment, Jacob Tas, Chair of the IMRF, said, “I am delighted that Sir Tim Laurence has accepted our invitation to become the new Patron of the IMRF. His tenure at the UK’s Royal Navy and his dedication to public service means he will be a fantastic supporter of the IMRF’s global work and the critical importance of maritime SAR organisations globally.”
Caroline Jupe, Chief Executive Officer of the IMRF, said, “The IMRF and its membership continue to play a major role in the maritime SAR sector as we look to prevent loss of life in the world’s waters. I am thrilled that Sir Tim has agreed to join the IMRF community as our new Patron, and I’m excited to see how we can work together to bolster the maritime SAR sector, tackle critical issues facing the sector and advance key initiatives to improve the lives of those working in a challenging industry.”
In addition to its work providing guidance and best practice for SAR operations, the IMRF has also launched a number of critical initiatives to improve the wellness and efficiency of SAR personnel, including its #WomenInSAR campaign, its #SARyouOK? mental health initiative and its #FutureSAR climate change awareness campaign.

World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reports that a team with the UN organisation has managed to reach the al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza. He said in a post on X that they delivered food, 24,050 litres of fuel, and medical supplies for 42,000 patients. “The hospital continues to be minimally functional, with an urgent need for specialised health workers,” Tedros said. The hospital, which has been at the heart of Israel’s war on Gaza, had been previously rendered inoperational after weeks-long Israeli attacks. The WHO team also managed to reach al-Helou Hospital, where Ghebreyesus said services are limited and there is an urgent need for staff, equipment and food.

Childcare duties pushed many women into infringing lockdown laws during the Covid pandemic, according to a new study.
Research by social policy charity the Nuffield Foundation found women were almost twice as likely to flout government regulations barring people from meeting indoors to curtail the spread of coronavirus.
The report, conducted at the University of York, found more women infringed lockdown rules to be able to access childcare – with researchers warning women were “bearing the brunt” of juggling childcare and work.
Professor Joe Tomlinson, the study’s lead author, said: “The results of our study suggest there wasn’t enough consideration given to caring obligations and how the new laws would have a disproportionate impact on women and other groups facing inequalities.
“Our findings surprised us because previous studies into compliance have shown that men are much more likely to break the law than women.
“However, our results are not about women being willfully non-compliant. Many participants told us how they broke the law by enlisting grandparents to help with childcare or meeting with other mothers for support. They were forming ‘bubbles’ out of necessity before it was officially allowed.”
He explained their research found that “as a nation, the British people are very willing to follow the rules of the legal system, but it’s dangerous for governments to abuse that or take it for granted.”
“The power of law in generating compliance is something policymakers should bear in mind for future public health responses as our study highlights a deep psychological difference,” Professor Tomlinson said.
The study discovered those polled had profoundly divergent grasps of the difference between concrete lockdown laws and government recommendations – with this gap in perspective profoundly determining how prepared they were to follow rules.
Researchers, who polled almost 1,700 individuals from around the UK, found more than eight in ten wrongly assumed the “two-metre” social distancing rule was a legal obligation but in reality, it was just a recommendation.
Rob Street, the Nuffield Foundation’s director of justice, said: “During the Covid-19 crisis there was lots of discussion about why people did or did not comply with lockdown rules.
“This study illustrates how people’s willingness to comply with lockdown rules was markedly influenced by whether these rules were based in law or guidance and how they were communicated to the public.”
Researchers noted the chief reasons people obeyed lockdown rules “were fear of peer disapproval; the conviction that breaking lockdown rules was morally wrong; and a general commitment to being law-abiding”.
It comes after studies have shown women bore the brunt of childcare responsibilities, household chores and homeschooling during lockdown, irrespective of whether they were working or not – with the closure of schools and childcare providers having compounded existing inequalities in how such duties are dished out among some couples.
While the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) has found the UK has one of the most expensive childcare systems in the world.

I just wanna let you know that Disney hasn't funded the Israeli state or IDF, they donated 1 million to the Red Cross and another 1 million to non profit medical charities that work in Israel. Boycotting Disney is ALWAYS good, but if we could try not to spread misinformation about them funding the genocide so we can focus on the companies that actually are, that would be cool 👍
Thank you for the polite message. I agree the focus shouldnt solely be on disney to boycott, but since the mcu is coming out with a new movie soon, I posted a reminder.
As for your take on disney not funding a genocide, I never said they donated to the IDF. But i still think they're complicit in supporting the state of Israel and thus also supporting a genocide.
For semantics sake i'll change the wording of my post from funding to supporting. But the core message remaims the same. I'll explain why now.
For context sake, let's not forget disney came out with statements to donate millions indeed, less than a week after the events of oct the 7th. This was part of their statement:
we must all do what we can to support the innocent people experiencing so much pain, violence, and uncertainty – particularly children,” said Robert A. Iger, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company.
Meanwhile the people in Gaza had already lost electricity and water. They had already received 6000 bombs within 6 days. Actually, in the same week of Disney's statement, the World Health Organisation came out with their own statement:
WHO warns that the health system in the Gaza Strip is at a breaking point. Time is running out to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe if fuel and life-saving health and humanitarian supplies cannot be urgently delivered to the Gaza Strip amidst the complete blockade. As injuries and fatalities continue to rise due to the ongoing air strikes on the Gaza Strip, acute shortages of medical supplies are compounding the crisis, limiting the response capacity of already overstretched hospitals to treat the sick and injured.
Despite WHO's cry for help regarding medical supplies on behalf of Gaza, where was Disney with their checkbook in that same week?
The most telling part is nothing has changed, it's been pretty much radiosilent from their end after they stated their support of israel. Meaning, they were quick to condemm the attack on israel but they still havent spoken out against the war crimes israel has committed and is still committing.
We are a full month later, over 10000 people have died in Gaza. Of which 4000 children. Israel has bombed over 20 hospitals. 13 out of 35 hospitals in Gaza, are not functional anymore. They've bombed universities. Destroyed neighbourhoods.
A full month later and where has Disney been with it's billions of dollars?
Despite their own morals, "we must all do what we can to support the innocent people experiencing so much pain, violence, and uncertainty – particularly children", they havent spoken one word about what's going on in Gaza. It's absolutely hypocritical. They havent spent one cent in humanitarian aid in Gaza.
So in my opinion, Disney has clearly chosen a side. They may have donated to humanitarian aids in Israel, and not the israeli state or IDF, but their silence and financial disinvolvement regarding gaza considering everything that's going on in Gaza, for a full month, speaks volumes. And i'd say that does make them supporters of a genocide. But you're right, if you spend money on marvel, it doesnt mean you have blood on your hands. You're just supporting a hypocritical company that's clearly chosen to remain silent during a genocide.

This is a passage from General Kirillov’s briefing. Absolutely astonishing:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“We have previously presented materials confirming the involvement of Hunter Biden and his Rosemont Seneca Foundation, as well as other US Democratic Party-controlled entities, in funding the Pentagon's main contractors operating in Ukraine.
It has been shown how deeply the son of the current US president, Hunter Biden, is involved in funding the US DOD-controlled company Metabiota.
However, some participants in closed projects remain in the shadows, although they are key players in Ukraine's military-biological programme.
They include former DITRA director Kenneth Myers,
executive vice president of the CIA-controlled In-Q-Tel venture capital fund Tara O'Toole,
former head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Thomas Frieden,
former the National Institutes of Health director Francis Collins,
former Battelle Memorial Institute executive director Jeffrey Wadsworth,
chief scientist and president of international research, development and medicine at Pfizer and many others.
All of them, in one way or another, are beneficiaries of the Pentagon's biological projects and are linked to the US Democratic Party, whose leaders act as the masterminds of military- biological research and the creators of covert money-laundering schemes to benefit a narrow circle of US elites.
It is these people who should be asked why taxpayers' money is being spent on illegal military-biological research in Ukraine and other countries around the world.”
“Despite formal bans, the US budget is being spent on dual-use research. In this connection, the Republican Party has initiated an investigation into the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and President Biden's chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci. Public funding through an intermediary organisation was confirmed for experiments to enhance the pathogenicity of viruses, including coronaviruses, the incidence of which was not widespread until 2019.
The investigation found that Fauci openly lied and deliberately concealed US government involvement in the research programmes.
At the same time, his collusion with social media management to manipulate public opinion on the causes of COVID-19 was revealed.
Such revelations raise legitimate questions for the US about the causes of new human-caused pathogens and the patterns of pandemic spread.”

Prince Harry has inspired the world with his kind acts this year - particularly in getting people to open up and talk about their mental health.
The Duke of Sussex has always followed in the kind footsteps of his late mother, Princess Diana. His tireless campaigning to encourage people to get tested for HIV following on from his mother's work to remove the stigma surrounding the virus has been inspiring to watch, and his decision to co-founded charity Sentebale with his friend Prince Seeiso of Lesotho to help children and adolescents struggling to come to terms with their HIV status is just one example of his commitment.
More recently the Prince has also been on a mission to help people seek the mental health support they need without fear of judgement. In his role as Chief Impact Officer for BetterUp, the Duke has talked bravely about his own experience with mental health and therapy, speaking to the hearts of many people across the globe.
Alexi Robichaux, BetterUp co-founder and CEO, told HELLO!: "Since joining BetterUp as Chief Impact Officer in 2021, Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex has been an integral part of our mission to elevate the global conversation around mental fitness.
"He helped spearhead critical initiatives such as defining our commitments to social impact, the Pledge 1%, and the work we do with active duty service personnel, veterans and their families. His kindness, authenticity and leadership at BetterUp, as well as through other organisations, has inspired many to seek the support they need to live healthier and more fulfilling lives.
"I'm grateful for the work he has done and feel energised by his vision and dedication to continuing to raise awareness for mental health."

"Speaking to Al Jazeera, Omer Bartov, a professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University, says Israeli officials, both in Netanyahu’s coalition and in the opposition, have been speaking more openly about making Gaza unlivable for Palestinians.
“There have been ongoing statements in recent days … which seem to indicate a particular plan the Israeli government seems to want to implement, which is not only to create unbearable conditions for the population of Gaza, but actually to speak about removing the population,” he said.
“Or as one minister [far-right finance minister] Smotrich said, to encourage them to leave Gaza either to the Sinai Peninsula or to other countries that would welcome them,” Bartov said.
“Or that Israel would rule that area and as this particular minister said, there should be discussions about settling the Gaza Strip,” he said, adding if the current trajectory continues, the world is witnessing an operation of “ethnic cleansing under the mantle of humanitarian action”.

American Muslim leaders carried on a campaign launched earlier this month against President Joe Biden over his handling of the Gaza conflict.
#AbandonBiden campaign was first launched by Muslim leaders from Michigan, Minnesota, Arizona, Wisconsin, Florida, Georgia, Nevada and Pennsylvania.
Saturday’s plan to actively campaign against Biden in all 50 US states was announced in Chicago, Illinois at the end of a national convention organised by the Muslim American Society and Islamic Circle of North America.
The leaders say they intend to guarantee Biden’s loss in the upcoming 2024 election over his refusal to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, where Israeli attacks have killed more than 21,000 people, mostly children and women.
“The president betrayed us because he violated the value of dignity and life. What’s the point of voting for you when you deny 2.2 million [in Gaza] people water?” said Hassan Abdel Salam, a spokesperson for the campaign.
Tumblr media
" Prime Minister Netanyahu thanked the Biden administration for its continued backing, including approval for a new emergency weapons sale, the second this month.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a similar decision on December 9 to approve the sale to Israel of nearly 14,000 rounds of tank ammunition worth more than $106m.
Some Democratic lawmakers have spoken of making a proposed $14.3bn in American military assistance to Israel contingent on concrete steps by Netanyahu’s government to reduce civilian casualties in Gaza.
Netanyahu says Israel needs more time in Gaza.
“As the chief of staff said this week, the war will continue many more months. My policy is clear. We will continue to fight until we have achieved all the objectives of the war, first and foremost the annihilation of Hamas and the release of all the hostages.”
Keep protesting and boycotting and calling your reps and blocking ships and railroads

Los Angeles restaurateur Clifford Clinton was a surprising man in a lot of respects. Born 3rd August 1900, Clifford spent much of his childhood in China as his parents did missionary work, and after witnessing the starvation and violence following the 1898 to 1900 Boxer Rebellion, he supposedly made a vow to never let people go hungry.
As such, when he started his first cafeteria in 1931 (named Cliftons after smashing together his first and last name), he published his business policy on his cheques,
"Regardless of the amount of this check, our cashier will cheerfully accept whatever you wish to pay or you may dine for free."
This proved to be good timing, as when thousands of people fleeing to California out of desperation caused by the Great Depression, many found they were able to get a decent meal at Clifford's restaurants at a time when many Californians were actively hostile to the newcomers.
Additionally, Clifford bucked racist trends of the time by staunchly refusing to segregate his businesses, in a time when many restaurants refused to serve African Americans, Latinos and Asian Americans. When racist customers would complain about this in customer feedback forms, Clinton would publish their comments in the restaurants' newsletter and admonish them, at length.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Clifford being very loud about his views lead to his drifting into the world of local LA politics, which at the time was a haven of corruption and vice under Mayor Frank Shaw, a man with the dubious claim to fame of possibly being the most corrupt mayor in the city's history.
Clifford first drew the ire of Shaw after he was hired to look at the state of the kitchens at the LA County General Hospital, where Clinton found significant amounts and of favouritism and waste, leading to his giving a list of recommendations of how to fix the budget and improve the quality of food being served. This unfortunately put him in Shaw's firing line, as he had once overseen the hospital, and he retaliated by siccing health inspectors on Clinton's establishments.
Tumblr media
In turn, Clifford became an increasingly vocal critic of the corruption both in City Hall and in the LAPD, the latter of which (in addition to its own institutional problems) served as the enforcement arm of Shaw's administration. As such, he was hired to join Citizens Independent Vice Investigating Committee (CIVIC), an organisation aiming to eliminate organised crime within Los Angeles city governments.
To this effect, CIVIC hired a former cop by the name of Harry Raymond, a private investigator fired from the LAPD 90 days after being made Chief of Police due to his publicly saying he wanted to get rid of corruption, and set to work.
Shaw was accused of of influence peddling of city jobs, including police positions, and winking at brothels and gambling dens. The LAPD, meanwhile, began wiretapping Clinton's phones and in 1937 "someone" blew up Clifford's house with a bomb that had been placed in the kitchen.
This wasn't the only "mysterious" explosion, however, as three months later in January 1938, a car bomb grievously injured Raymond filling him with 186 pieces of shrapnel. In the subsequent trial, due to expert witness testimony by rocket scientist and Aleister Crowley devotee Jack Parsons, LAPD Captain Earle Kynette and two assistants, were convicted on four counts of conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to murder, and malicious use of explosives.
Tumblr media
As Kynette was a member of the "Spy Squad" tasked with, well, spying on Clinton and his family, a line could firmly be drawn from the work of CIVIC and the attempted murders of Clinton and his family and that of Harry Raymond.
In the subsequent fallout from the trial, Chief of Police James Davis was forced to resign, while a Grand Jury investigation that finally linked Shaw with multiple vice rackets led to his being removed from office by a special recall election. The judge that oversaw the Grand Jury, Judge Fletcher Bowron, replaced him as mayor.
In 1944, Clifford funded a Caltech scientist Dr. Henry Borsook $5000 of his own money to produce a food additive that could be used to provide proper nutritional values for less than 5 cents a meal. Surprisingly, Borsook (in collaboration with French chef Mme. Soulange Berzceller) created Multi-Purpose Food (MPF), a flavourless high-protein food supplement that can be added to meals.
The profits from this invention, in addition to money gained from selling the restaurants to his children, led to Clinton and his wife founding the non-profit Meals for Millions in 1946, which distributed meals across the world to starving and malnourished people.
Clinton would eventually pass away in 1969, leaving the world somewhat better off than before. ...And that's not even getting into the sex aid business he was reportedly tangentially involved in with his mistress Terri Richmond, with whom Clifford's wife was allegedly aware of and supposedly fine with...

“Unless we take action on climate change, future generations will be roasted, toasted, fried and grilled.” Christine Lagarde
In 2022 we had a former Leader of the Tory Party, talking down the consequences of climate change and how we should respond to it.
“Net Zero has become a ‘new religion,’ says Ian Duncan Smith.”  (Independent: o9/03/22)
In the same year we had this statement from the World Health Organisation:
“Climate change is already killing us, but strong action now can prevent more deaths.”  (WHO: 07/11/22)
This year, with half the world, including Europe, in the grips of massive temperature increases, wild fires, possible water shortage and crop failures, we had this statement from the UN.
‘Hottest July ever signals ‘era of global boiling has arrived’ says UN chief.. “Climate change is here. It is terrifying. And it is just the beginning,” said the UN chief, warning that the consequences are as clear as they are tragic: “children swept away by monsoon rains, families running from the flames (and) workers collapsing in scorching heat.”’ (UN.org: 27/07/23)
The UK government response has been all too predictable. Sunak has stated he is issuing “hundreds", yes hundreds, of new licenses for the extraction of oil and gas from around our shores. He is planning on curbing clean air measures in our cities, and has signalled he will abandon green policies that come at a cost to consumers. “Get rid of all green crap” seems to be the new Tory mantra. Votes, it seems, are of far greater importance than lives. I’m not sure how many people would rather save a few hundred pounds than see their children’s very existence threatened but there will undoubtedly be some. Lets hope they don’t live to regret it for all our sakes.

30 November 2023: King Abdullah II held an international meeting in Amman on “Coordinating Gaza Emergency Relief”, with the participation of representatives of international organisations and UN agencies, as well as Arab and foreign countries.   At the meeting, attended by Queen Rania and Crown Prince Hussein, King Abdullah said humanitarian aid currently delivered to Gaza does not cover relief needs on the ground.   His Majesty called for maintaining coordination between all international stakeholders to bridge gaps, avoid the duplication of efforts, and identify the challenges in the Strip, urging participants to work collectively to deliver aid within sustainable methods that build on current efforts. (Source: Petra)
For their part, participants commended Jordan’s efforts, under the King’s leadership, in bringing together all the concerned stakeholders to coordinate the humanitarian response in Gaza.   At the meeting, held as part of the “Aqaba Process” initiative, they highlighted the need for the international community to push for ensuring the suitable conditions that guarantee a quick and uninterrupted delivery of aid to Gaza.   Participants discussed the current humanitarian situation in Gaza, and the need to respect international law and provide basic necessities—including food, water, medicine, shelter, and energy—highlighting the current efforts of their agencies and countries, as well as the challenges they face in aid delivery, and means of overcoming them.   In addition, attendees identified aid priorities and urgent needs on the ground in Gaza, including the needed logistics for aid delivery and distribution, as well as allocating resources quickly and efficiently.   The meeting saw the participation of high-level representatives of over 30 international humanitarian organisations, including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the World Food Programme, UNRWA, UNICEF, the World Health Organisation, UN Women, the United Nations Office for Project Services, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, in addition to representatives of over 30 Arab and foreign countries.
Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, His Majesty’s chief adviser for religious and cultural affairs and personal envoy, and Prince Rashid bin El Hassan, adviser to His Majesty and chairperson of the board of trustees of the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation, and a number of senior Jordanian officials attended the meeting.

The Guardian

The United Arab Emirates’ state oil company has been able to read emails to and from the Cop28 climate summit office and was consulted on how to respond to a media inquiry, the Guardian can reveal.
The UAE is hosting the UN climate summit in November and the president of Cop28 is Sultan Al Jaber, who is also chief executive of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc). The revelations have been called “explosive” and a “scandal” by lawmakers.
The Cop28 office had claimed its email system was “standalone” and “separate” from that of Adnoc. But expert technical analysis showed the office shared email servers with Adnoc. After the Guardian’s inquiries, the Cop28 office switched to a different server on Monday.
Al Jaber’s dual role has attracted strong criticism, including from the former UN climate chief Christiana Figueres, who called his approach “dangerous”.
Replies to a Guardian email to the Cop28 office requesting reaction to these comments, which did not mention Adnoc, contained the text “Adnoc classification: internal”.
The French MEP Manon Aubry, said: “This is an absolute scandal. An oil and gas company has found its way to the core of the organisation in charge of coordinating the phasing out of oil and gas. It is like having a tobacco multinational overseeing the internal work of the World Health Organization.”
Aubry, who co-led a recent letter to the UN from 133 US and EU politicians calling for the removal of Al Jaber, said: “The Cop28 office has lost all credibility. If we care more about preventing a climate disaster than protecting the profits and influence of fossil fuel companies, we need to react now.”

Catch up with old friends
10th March 2023
Some of you may remember I first met Joshua Ssebunnya in the British Houses of Parliament. I had just encountered Professor Fred Kigozi, whose name I had known for many years as a prolific Ugandan researcher in mental health. I asked him who could help us train people in the mhGAP programme, and he pointed to Joshua.
Joshua is a master trainer who learnt his mhGAP trade at the World Health Organisation in Geneva. He has been a great friend to Jamie’s Fund in providing the training that we give to the small number of specialist psychiatric staff (PCOs and psych nurses). They then cascade the programme to their general colleagues in medicine, surgery, midwifery and so on.

Boda bodas get everywhere
In this way, we’ve been helping to bridge the gap: too few specialists and too many people with mental illness and epilepsy means there is a gap in getting access to treatment. So far we’ve trained about 1000 staff in mhGAP. You’ve helped to support that if you are a JF donor!
On this trip we’ve been so encouraged to hear how the gap is indeed being bridged; mhGAP is making a real difference to people’s access to care. Physicians doing their rounds are hearing much more about the whole patient, not just their physical symptoms.
And this progress is extended with the Community Leaders’ programme which teaches key people such as local clan chiefs, teachers, pastors and police how to identify mental illness and where modern treatment can be found.
We usually have plenty to talk about with Joshua, and Friday morning was no exception. All through a heavy rain storm we talked most of the morning and he stayed for lunch with me while Ewan went to take part in a Zoom call. Both Ewan and I are in the midst of research projects in which you might call Joshua our field officer.

Perhaps an excuse for a "Chelsea tractor" ?
That afternoon we made our way across the city again, through the very large puddles created by the heavy rain, up and down the potholes, as the boda-bodas wove their way between the cars and lorries.

The access road - it is rougher than it looks.
You get to St Stephen’s Hospital down a rather steeply sloping road. It’s a Health Centre IV, the highest level of health centre, like a small hospital. Here we meet old friends Olivia, the bright and chatty administrator, and Reagan, the tall and very serious clinical officer.

A view of the area they serve - high density, low cost housing.
Reagan reminded us that they serve an urban population, many of them shifting here and there, trying to find affordable housing, and with high rates of extreme poverty. There is also the fact that within reasonably easy reach of St Stephen’s are three government health centres or hospitals , where patients can get their medicines free of charge. The private-not-for-profit units have to charge – not a lot, but often it’s too much for our patients. You might say that St Stephen’s is in a competitive market!

Cycling is not that common - you have to accept you are the lowest form of wheeled life.
As you know we support a number of trainee PCOs. Here are Eseza and Miria, who came for a meal and a catch up with us. We look forward to them finishing their course in June or so this year. They will return to their respective hospitals, and will get stuck into leading mental health service development.

We drove back in the night time traffic.

Why we avoid driving at night as far as possible. This includes unlit bicycles, motorcycles, pedestrians, cars etc.
