Applying for Work in the UK
Tumblr media
If you are looking for a job in the UK, whether as a foreigner wishing to relocate, or as a British national, you may find yourself faced with having to fill in a job application form. What is the difference between an application form and a CV? When designing your CV, you can choose the layout and, more importantly, what to include and what not to include. For example, if you have been working for more than 10 years, it is common to include only the last 10 years experience on a CV, or if you have changed career, to include only the experience and training relevant to the post for which you are applying. However, in the interests of equal opportunities, a job application form requires every applicant to fill in all of their work and educational experience. In addition, you will usually be asked to fill in a large blank sheet of paper sometimes referred to as the supporting statement. The directions at the top of this page will ask you to explain why you are suitable for the job. In other words, you must produce a detailed piece of writing selling yourself to the company. This is something which causes panic in many applicants and unfortunately the formula for writing this isn’t taught at school or university. However, there is a standard approach to writing the supporting statement. First of all, read all the instructions. As well as the information at the top of each page, you will be sent guidelines on how to complete the form. You should read these very carefully and make sure that you follow them exactly. Some companies will ask you to set out the information in a precise way, such as using specific headings, whereas others will allow you to use your own format. In the latter case, you should use the job description as your guide. Take each of the points in turn and write a short paragraph highlighting your experience in this area. You should use examples, rather than just saying that you have excellent communication skills. Where possible, use figures to illustrate your achievements, such as “increased sales by 25% in my first month”. Use bullets and strong, active verbs to give your application punch. Write your supporting statement on a separate piece of paper first. Be sure to edit and proofread and when you are satisfied, write it on a photocopy of the original to make sure it will fit. In some cases, you are permitted to add an extra sheet, but only do this if absolutely necessary, that is, if you can’t abbreviate your statement and the additional information is crucial to the application. If you find you have only a few extra lines, go back and cut out anything unnecessary. Remember, employers are busy and don’t want to read pages and pages of information – unless it is highly relevant. Your task is to show them, as concisely as possible, that you are suitable for the job and that you should be on the interview shortlist. Read the full article

INKTOBER15
I got a job.
There was a job central event at my uni, and because of my wacky timed hungarian salaries I felt I have to apply for some temporary job.
Optimum Staff Solution Ltd gave me the first job at the Ascot Racecourse. They wanted me to work as a waiter, but I suggested to put me in the bar. Reason: I wanted to learn how to teem a beer/cider/guiness/pimm’s and I did not want to walk up and down and being nice with everyone. I did that in Hungary and got fed up. Teeming is more challenging so I can not focus on how much I hate to be nice with every single person. :D
To be honest, teeming is not as simple as it looks like, especially, that a pint means the plastic cap should be full nearly without any foam on the top. I had trouble to accomplish the shift, but they called me for another work, so I guess it means I was good enough! :P

Targeting the U.K. for Work
For those of you who do not know, nurses here in the Philippines are always aiming to go abroad where the salary is way higher compared to here. I am going to be transparent in this post and post figures of my own earnings just to make things clearer. In the hospital I work for, I earn P15,000 ($346) a month. If you take out the tax and other deductions, every two weeks I take home P6,300 ($145). Those who are not living here or not a locale would say "What's wrong with that? The Philippines has a very low cost of living anyway."
Therefore, I'll break down the expenses I have every month:
House rent - P5,500 ($127)
Phone bill - P1,600 ($37)
Electricity - P3,400 and that varies every month ($79)
Cellphone credit per month - P300 ($7)
All of those without including expenses on food and transportation to and from work and it already amounts to P10,900 ($250) and trust me, the amount that's left for me is enough to make it last up to the next paycheck. I am very fortunate to be living with my mother, where it is a common thing in the Philippines, and I somehow get help with my expenses.
But my mom is not getting any younger and the same thing goes for me. I have to do something about it that is why searching for a greener pasture outside the country is the best option for me. But even going through that process is like struggling to get out of a quicksand. The requirements are not easy to achieve. Exams have to be taken, more money has to be spent and do not even ask me about the processing of papers.
I was able to submit papers to some agencies and one of them already interviewed me. I was told that I just need to take a certain exam first so I had myself scheduled for that. On July 10th, a most unfortunate event happened. I was not able to sit the examination and had to re-take it at a much later date on September. What is wrong with that? Well, the employer from UK is coming in on that month and my chance of being hired is lessened by a whole lot.
It was depressing. I did not know what to do. Until now I still think of what just happened and I am filled with regrets. But I have received support from people. Hugs, advise, prayers and everything else they could offer to make me feel better. At first it was not sufficient but then I thought, these people are making an effort for me, I should do the same for them. The only sad part there is the person whom I really want a hug from telling me "Hey, everything is going to be fine..." does not give a crap. But to hell with that, I am definitely moving forward.
