Sectional Champions Crowned in Ohio
Sectional championships have been crowed in Ohio girls’
basketball while the West Virginia girls and Ohio boys’ postseasons get in full
swing this week.
For the Buckeye State girls, Martins Ferry went on the road
and knocked off fourth-seeded Garaway, 48-37, to capture the sectional crown.
The Purple Riders’ time to celebrate was short lived, however, as awaiting
Coach Dave Reasbeck’s charges Wednesday is No. 1 seed Hiland. The Hawks
unloaded on Ridgewood, 62-4 in their sectional co-final. In two postseason
games, Hiland has allowed 21 points. The Hawks and Purple Riders meet at 7 p.m.
Wednesday at Meadowbrook.
The opposite side of the Division III bracket saw two seed
Union Local pull away late from a scrappy Morgan team that gave Coach Rob
Barr’s Jets a legitimate test. The Jets won 55-36 and now face three seed
Tuscarawas Valley, which knocked off Sandy Valley 54-49. That game will be
Wednesday at Harrison Central. The two
winning teams will meet in the district final Saturday at 2 p.m. at a to be
determined site.
In Division IV, Monroe Central got to cut the nets after
defeated Tucarawas Central Catholic 52-32 at home. The Seminoles advance to
Wednesday’s meeting with Bishop Rosecrans in a game that will be played at St.
Clairsville. The Bishops upset three
seed Shadyside, 43-38 in double overtime.
It was an unexpected early exit for the Tigers, who advanced all the way
to Columbus a season ago after winning the regional.
The opposite side of the bracket features an all-OVAC
showdown in top seed Fort Frye and two seed Beallsville. The Cadets made quick
work of Toronto, 68-21, while Beallsville put away Shenandoah 48-36. It’s a
matchup between the OVAC’s Class AAA and A champions and it will take place
Wednesday at Cambridge.
In Division II, East Liverpool, Indian Creek and Beaver
Local fell in their respective sectional finals. The Redskins led River View
for much of the game, but a 3-pointer at the buzzer lifted the visitors to
victory, 53-50. Beaver Local ran into a buzz saw in Maysville, falling
76-36. East Liverpool fell to top-seeded
Tri-Valley 68-12.
On the West Virginia side, only games involving local teams
took place. Valley beat Hundred in a 4 vs. 5 seed battle in Class A. The
Lumberjills advanced to play Wheeling Central. In Class AA, Weir beat rival Oak
Glen for the third time this season to advance.
Two OVAC Wrestlers Place at Inaugural Girls’ Tournament
The OVAC had one champion and one runner-up at the inaugural
girls’ state wrestling tournament sponsored by the Ohio High School Wrestling
Coaches Association. The tournament
featured 250-plus wrestlers from across the Buckeye State, including three from
the OVAC.
Warren Local freshman Hayley Snyder (101-pound class) pinned
her way to the finals. After having a bye in the first and second round, she
defeated Miami East’s Bella Lewis by fall in 1:05 before putting Marysville’s
Madison Sharp’s back to the mat in 5:28. In the finals, Snyder defeated No. 1
seed Riley Banyas of Elyria 8-1 in the finals. Snyder had beaten Banyas earlier
this season. Snyder improved her overall
record to 22-14.
Indian Creek senior Ellie Paterra also had a successful
tournament, finishing runner-up in the 116 class. Paterra had an impressive
march to the finals, winning her first two matches by pinfall against
Fairfield’s Kaitlyn Hughes (59 seconds) and Oberlin’s Fallon Cook (19
seconds). Facing off against
Springboro’s Rylee Gust in the quarterfinals, Paterra secured a technical fall,
18-3, to advance to the semis. There she bested Upper Arlington’s Isabella
DiBenedetto by fall at 1:32. In the finals, London’s Grace Jones scored a 6-4
decision against Paterra. Jones’ previous three matches all ended via pin.
River’s Alexus Felton fell in the first round against River
Valley’s Lila Mencer via a pinfall at 3:01.
Nailers Salvage Tough Week, Best Brampton
Following tough losses to Cincinnati (3-0) and Kalamazoo
(3-2) to start the weekend, the Nailers salvaged the three-game road swing with
a 3-2 win against the Brampton Beast.
Tied 1-1 after two periods, Wheeling’s Justin Almeida
recorded a power-play and even strength goal in the decisive third period to
put Wheeling up 3-1. Brampton’s Erik Bradford scored with less than a minute to
play, but the Beast couldn’t close the gap in time. Nick Saracino had an unassisted strike for
Wheeling in the third period. Alex Dubeau had 28 saves for Wheeling, which
returns home to WesBanco Arena on Friday to play host to the Maine Mariners.
It’ll be a Frosty Fridays promotion with $2 beers.
Also this weekend, the Nailers acquired forward Josh
Holmstrom from the Norfolk Admirals in exchange for future considerations.
Holmstrom was second on the Admirals in scoring with 27 points, including eight
goals in 50 games. He was previously a teammate of Saracino in Worcester during
the 2017-18 season.
West Liberty Men Clinch Mountain East Crown
No. 16 clinched at minimum a share of the Mountain East
Conference championship for the third season in a row Sunday and, in doing so,
handed Fairmont State its worse home less in more than a decade.
The Hilltoppers (22-4, 17-3) were led by Dalton Bolon’s 27
points and 21 from Will Yoakum while Marlon Moore Jr. and Pat Robinson added 18
and 17 points, respectively in a balanced scoring effort. A win Wednesday
against Notre Dame will give Coach Ben Howlett’s club the outright title. It
will be the Hilltoppers’ 10th in the last 11 seasons.

An OPEN LETTER ... to Chase Harler
AN OPEN LETTER TO … Chase Harler, a member of the WVU Men’s Basketball team:
Never mind the loss to Kansas. Turnovers. Free throws.
You know. You’re living it.
You. Are. Living It.
And you’re doing that despite an overall belief that you
could not. Most folks, and you know this, thought you would red shirt, but then
transfer to a Division II school, but instead you wanted to be a part of
something. You’ve work hard, on the court and in the classroom, and now
Mountaineer fans love to see when Bob Huggins sends you into the game because
you play hard like you want to win. You play the game like a West Virginian
plays the game.
And we love that.
You’ve made the Wheeling Center Catholic community
proud; you’ve made the city of Moundsville proud; and you have made this valley
proud.
Thank you for showing the nation our state’s tenacity
and our grit. Thank you for allowing other males and females to believe that
improbable is still possible, and that hard work is what really makes dreams come
true.
Nothing was handed to you, Chase. Sure, your parents
are awesome and they afforded you a terrific high school education, but there’s
a ginormous difference between being the best W.Va. Class A basketball player and
being an important ingredient on a D-I team in the Big 12 Conference.
You’re the grit. You’re the tenacity. You are us.
Sincerely,
The Country Roads Choir
