ahhh spoilers for breaking bad and better call saul!!!!!!!!!!!!! 

ok i know that jimmy mcgill changes his name to saul goodman as like an alias and its a play on “it’s all good, man” but the significance of the name saul is so piquant itself.

the name “saul” actually means “prayed for” or “demanded”, which tracks, because saul’s whole shtick is that he’s a lawyer “for the people” or whatever.

 now what else is interesting, at least to me, is the comparisons between saul goodman and king saul from the bible. there’s a lyric in love, love, love by the mountain goats that goes “king saul fell on his sword when it all wrong.” and then there’s this blurb to explain the lyric.

this is about on par for the course with saul goodman too. the philistines are the cops, and saul “takes his own life” when he becomes gene takavic at the end of breaking bad. ironically, and i dont know if this is just confirmation bias or if it was done intentionally, but gene means “well-born” and “noble” which is almost the complete opposite of who both jimmy and saul were.
