AlinaHipHarp - Afro Blue / Paris Sur Le Toit + remixes - another player in the burgeoning jazz harp field
In the tradition of Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane, Alina is innovating the use of the Harp in Jazz with contemporary melodies overlaying fresh Hip-Hop beats. Utilising live instrumentation and the contributions of the cream of UK Jazz talent (Tony Kofi, Jay Phelps, Julie Walkington among them) Alina has created two tracks that will be massive additions to the Jazz and Black music canons. This re-imagining of 'Afro Blue' features a wonderful vocal performance from Vimala Rowe which interplays with the Harp solos over a strongly percussive bass driven track that lends itself to the dance floor as the Latin feel of the track builds and builds into a series of solos from the horns, percussion and drums. 'Paris Sur La Toit' is a masterclass in Jazz Hip-Hop with rhymes laid down in French and English by SANITY and Tom TheyThem. Here Alina's Harp provides the changing dynamics of the track, giving the atmosphere which bridges from the break beats to the stunning vocals. Having these original materials to work with, the creative inputs of both DJ Spinna and Sly Johnson are at the top of their respective games bringing new resonances and nuance to 'Paris Sur le Toit'. Paris based composer and vocalist Sly Johnson presents us with his TAGi remix that strips back to the beats in order to bring forth the inter-play between the spoken word, the sung vocals of the chorus and that wonderful harp playing. Brooklynite DJ Spinna's remix brings us a fuller sound where the slow funk of the synth bass drives the vocals along and provides a space for those harp melodies to dance in. This EP is a digital release with seven tracks including the original groove of 'Afro Blue' along with the remixes and instrumentals of 'Paris Sur Le Toit'.

Quote
I remember the kitchen's flavor upon flavor, a mouthwatering treasury, pungence of seasonings, and the aroma of incense from the prayer room next door. Each morning the kitchen awoke to the swish of churning butter, the scraping of scoured pots. And in the center, the stove, fresh washed with mud, painted and bedecked, all set to burn. We saved secret money in the seasoning box; hid sweets too, and played at cooking with lentils and jaggery. We played Mother and Father, in the magic world of kitchen that wrapped childhood in its spell. No longer playground for the grownup girl now trained into kitchenhood. Like all the mothers and mothers’ mothers before her, in the kitchen she becomes a woman right here. Our kitchen is a mortuary. Pans, tins, gunny bags crowd it like cadavers that hang amid clouds of damp wood smoke. Mother floats, a ghost here, a floating kitchen herself, her eyes melted in tears, her hands worn to spoons, her arms spatulas that turn into long frying pans, and other kitchen tools. Sometimes mother glows like a blazing furnace, and burns through the kitchen, pacing, restless, a caged tiger, banging pots and pans. How easy, they say, the flick of a ladle and the cooking's done. No one visits now. No one comes to the kitchen except to eat. My mother was queen of the kitchen, but the name engraved on the pots and pans is Father's. Luck, they say, landed me in my great kitchen, gas stove, grinder, sink, and tiles. I make cakes and puddings, not old-fashioned snacks as my mother did. But the name engraved on the pots and pans is my husband's. My kitchen wakes to the whistle of the pressure cooker, the whirr of the electric grinder. I am a well-appointed kitchen myself, turning round like a mechanical doll. My kitchen is a workshop, a clattering, busy, butcher stall, where I cook and serve, and clean, and cook again. In dreams, my kitchen haunts me, my artistic kitchen dreams, the smell of seasonings even in the jasmine. Damn all kitchens. May they burn to cinders, the kitchens that steal our dreams, drain our lives, eat our days--like some enormous vulture. Let us destroy those kitchens that turned us into serving spoons. Let us remove the names engraved on the pots and pans. Come, let us tear out these private stoves, before our daughters must step solitary into these kitchens. For our children's sake, Let us destroy these lonely kitchens.
Vimala, “Vantillu / The Kitchen"
(tr. from Telugu by B.V.L. Naranyana Row)

Today is our first full day off after beginning FGI. There are options for people to choose between a cooking class, going to Cu Chi Tunnels or Mekong Delta. I chose the last. It’s about a 2 hour ride from our hotel down to Mekong. Mekong is a network of rivers in the southern tip of Vietnam stretched over 40,000 square kilometers. Our tour includes visiting a brick kiln that uses minimal energy and local resources to produce brick.  We also visit a coconut candy making site and it’s cool to see how the candies are made. It’s clear that industries like these did not exist prior to tourism taking a hold in this area, but now encompass a large proportion of income. The tangible impact of tourism is very apparent. During our boat ride, we start karaoke and it’s great how people’s reluctance shreds away as one after another person starts singing their favorite songs. One of the last imagery for him from this trip was a narrow waterway that our smaller boat went through. There was bamboo and greens on either side providing shade under the scorching sun and the calmness of still water as we rowed over it. Along with boating, we also cycled through the streets which was super fun. There was very little traffic and we were biking through small towns. We got back late afternoon and went for a massage with Sam and Josep. I then went for dinner to Tandoor with Maryse and Vimala and ended the night at one of the tallest buildings in HCMC, Bitexco, at a bar--Eon 52, providing a view of the vast city at night.

Vimala Rowe sings Billie Holiday songs at Scarborough Jazz Festival 2018. What an amazing singer and a beautiful performance , accompanied by John Etheridge and Andy Cleyndert. As Vimala sang some of the greatest numbers I couldn’t help wondering why I had never seen her sing before. Now she’s top of my list, if you get the chance to see and listen to Vimala you won’t be disappointed, another great jazz voice! . . . . #vimalarowe #vimalarowesings #scarboroughjazzfestival #jazz #billieholiday #strangefruit #jazzsinger #jazzvocalist #livemusic #music #musician #musiclife #jazzmusic #scarborough #yorkshire #scarboroughspa (at Scarborough Spa) https://www.instagram.com/p/BotEozSlaE9/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=azewhqh5fk9q

Review: Cafe Society Swing, Theatre Royal Stratford East
Cafe Society Swing :  Tue 5 - Sat 16 Jun 2018                                Writer, MD and Piano - Alex Webb Director - Christian Durham
Tumblr media
Vimala Rowe (right)pays homage to the late great Lay Day in this reworking of a true historical event  - the first racially-integrated jazz club in New York.
The nature of jazz is like so much writing on water; it's musical graffiti, stolen moments to be revered only by those with timing taste and discretion So  when Alex Webb's Cafè Society Swing -  the true story of New York's  first racially-integrated jazz club -  went into its second week at Theatre Royal Stratford  there was really something to savour. Like lightning striking twice, This production built on its successful run at the (then) Tricycle Theatre to present an(other) all star cast recreating the soundtrack  of the world's Art Deco capital at its zenith.
"Cafe Society" was a two-club franchise which Barney Josephson originated in wartime New York.  is served as a both speakeasy and  launch pad for many now-legendary jazz stars; Red Allen, Lena Horne, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and the like.
By deliberately treating black and white customers the same ( in contrast to the Cotton Club, where, at the time, dark skinned people were welcomed as artists and servants, but not patrons ) Josephson flew in the face of the Greenwich Village cognoscenti, and borrowed their brand name  - which had typically signalled which social classes should NOT be made to mix.  This at a time when Madison Square garden was receiving tens of thousands of Nazi Supporters to openly and freely demonstrate against blacks, jews and migrants.
Tumblr media
Alex Webb’s interpretation sees this foment through the eyes of an anti-communist Journalist, played by Peter Gerald [The Hobbit, Maeleficent ] who is determined to write the clubs epitaph, and instead has to endure a decade long cultural revolution in the jazz hotspot
Cafe Society saw the likes of  Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie and Thelonious Monk perform.  Ironically, Monk would have not been allowed to work at Cafe Society ,or anywhere else in New York, in later years,  having lost his equity card due to a marijuana related possession arrest. Today, New York has decriminalised the smoking of Marijuana, and there is an American company called "Strange Fruit" legally selling Marijuana to Americans in America. Abel Meeropol's lyrics "Strange Fruit" were popularised by Billie Holiday’s voice , and was first sung at Cafe Society by Billie at the request of Barney Josephson
Tumblr media
The music in the production -  as you would exepect when the likes of Dave Bitelli (tenor sax, right) Ciyo Brown ( guitar, left) Nathaniel Cross ( trombone) Tony Kofi ( alto) Sue Richardson  ( trumpet) and the incredible rhythm section of Miles Danso on double bass and Andy Chapman Drums and  writer and Musical Director Alex Webb on piano. is on point and authentic The show assidiously avoids the stereotype of an American songbook cabaret via the originality of the voices of  Vimala Rowe, Judi Jackson(above),  and China Moses(below) . They all manage to strike a balance between homage and making some of these jazz standards their own.
Tumblr media
It's easy to look at Art Deco now as kitsch, and see its architecture as some past glory.  But Webb's production serves as a reminder of the role music has in subverting fascism with fun and flair and a fair few frolics. Whilst not exactly capturing lightning in a bottle,   Director Christian Durham has definitely assembled a beacon of hope for Trump-era theatre.

Migrants Seek Sanctuary In Tiny French Slot.
Picture booth rentals are an excellent method to running start your service and also you may create sufficient loan coming from these as they reside in trend and also everyone is actually opting for them. A few of the prominent names for lady little ones consist of Preethi or Priya (the loving one), Ranjita (the one who draws in), Aishwarya (the prosperous one), Soundarya (the gorgeous one), Sheela or Pavitra (pure one), Tejaswini (the resplendant one), Nitya or even Amruta (the deathless one), Kavya (the one which has set a trend like an impressive), Kalyani (the fortunate one), Vinodini (the unfamiliar one), Vimala (the pure one), and so on I recognize credit searches in UK are performed through title therefore if there is a brand new label, brand-new handle will certainly I have the ability to create that. Vernon sounds like the title from a neighbor who will have your parking space and also make no apologies for that. A problem, in shorts. Next up that TG Rehabs (TGTX ). I have actually discussed this name typically over recent year. The very first part of the name refers to the genus to which the animal is a member as well as the second component signifies its types; this body continues to be effective today as well as is comprehended through researchers all over the planet. If you are actually signing up at an adult going out with website, then this name is actually over proper; nevertheless, if you're at a Christian dating web Suggested Internet site, odds are this won't suffice. Leo and also his crew imagined a brand new arena in 1995 and also functioned tirelessly since to earn this wonderful Community Facility a fact. Name the artist who was birthed in Milan in 1571 as well as was explained during the course of his lifetime as the best widely known painter in Rome, in spite of possessing had a fatality warrant provided against him by the pope. Select the Web solutions records resource as the records source as well as offer your information sent an ideal label. One could safely and securely bet a couple of cages from rum that no person with his feet straight on world earth are likely to name the household yacht, 'The Saddam Hussein' or even 'Twin towers' over the upcoming few years or two. If you assume about that, stands up to cause truly. No one actually desires to be associated with disasters or even mayhem, apart from of course the oddball that named a boat I found numerous moons earlier referred to as, 'The Family members Row' ... can not presume why whatsoever though! The energy of NICE Perform lies in the unique unity between parts that makes it possible for any individual to acquire understandings from the interactions, and also switch these insights right into an exceptionally valuable resource from decision-support information. I adore the one for lauren haha don't imply to become disrespectful however they likely put as well as made a rhyme for the titles they such as as an example merely to permit u recognize the name Lauren is actually the fricken absolute best label EVER BEFORE!!! Your street name, city, county and even condition might offer creativity for a homeschool name. Under right hand edge of this deal, I create the surname of the trainee's educator (creates it simpler to rapidly throw them in mail boxes). Most very hot and also lovely Latina girls have interseting individual, for this reason Western people are actually often attracted along with them. Adorabella" came up as the not-so-weighty topic from name selection by an apparent simpleton (that was likewise considering calling the exact same fetus Butterfly"). As these various other natural substitutes are certainly not as tough as Mr. Nice Guy, they will definitely help you get a smart idea of exactly what you are entering.

UK: JAZZ JOURNAL MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2017
Oz Noy Contrary to the dominant postmodern narrative, jazz-rock lives and evolves in the hands of the Israel-born, NY-domiciled guitarist. David West probes the background Profiles Guitarist John Etheridge on travelling light with singer Vimala Rowe; pianist Ahmad Jamal, travelling only to the treasured Marciac festival; jazz novelist Mick Carlon, travelling with Louis, riding with Duke Tony Fruscella Pianist John Williams said Fruscella lived in “another world on the end of the flower stem”. That removal from reality might have been a source of musical inspiration but it also contributed to his downfall, as Gordon Jack relates Book & DVD Reviews Books: Jazz Festival: Jim Marshall // Listen To This: Miles Davis And Bitches Brew // Modern Saxophone Techniques DVD: Rahsaan Roland Kirk: The Case Of The Three Sided Dream One man’s Drew Simon Spillett says just what he likes Obituaries Victor Bailey; Bob Cranshaw; Bill Kyle; Hod O’Brien Anec-dotage JJ’s Critics’ Poll has Alan Luff thinking the 50s was likely the most creative, exciting and fertile decade in jazz recording history http://ift.tt/2lFPoGq via Blogger http://ift.tt/2kXSupp

Today is a pretty chill day. We have a panel in the morning. Of Vietnamese entrepreneurs—Ngoc Anh Hoang (Founder TEDx DaKao), Pho Pham (Viet Capital Ventures), Thomas Grove (dx Saigon and sefu fashion brand).  They talk about the rapid pace of development in the country in terms of both real estate and human capital (professional skill level). 50% of the population here is under 25 and the internet is playing an increasingly important role in bringing knowledge amongst them. There is one super cool fintech startup they mention that is using mobile data to help assess credit worthiness of unbanked population to help them get loans more easily.  The term that I have heard a few times to describe Vietnamese’ is “hustler”. One of the entrepreneurs, Thomas Grove, is working on a jacket for motorbike riders that is a protective jacket in case they fall and is also light, non-sweaty and good looking. He mentions that for him the design thinking process is about getting people to give feedback to you on your product/prototype on a consistent basis. After the panel, we have a quick meeting with Professor Alison Mnookin who is checking in on how our team is doing. Afterwards the team meets by the pool to do some brainstorming around a couple of pending questions Minh had for us. We then head out for lunch at a popular local Pho place, Pho Phu Vuong. Since the place does not serve vegetarian Pho, our guide ordered some noodles from a different place for me ahead of time. It’s these small thoughtful gestures which show you that someone truly cares---attention to detail not in the way consulting teaches you to care about that missing semi-colon, but attention to details to a person’s life. The Pho place is popular for lunch for people working in this area. For $3 you can have an entire huge bowl of pho and meet. I find it interesting that our waiter actually pulls a plastic stool and is sitting in the same room in case we need anything.
We head back to the hotel after lunch. I spend time on my laptop uploading and updating my blogs, catching up on emails, etc. Around 4:30, head out to Ben Thanh market with Vimala. The market is full of t-shirts, food, fake branded purses. Rows after rows in either direction. The inside of it reminds me a little of the Pom-Pom market in Kathmandu. While the Ben Thanh market is a big tourist attraction, it is underwhelming and nothing novel. While walking in the area we suddenly see a Hindu temple. The temple has statues of all the different gods on the outside and the main statue in the inside is of Kali-Ma. The names of Gods have been Vietnamized, so Kali Ma becomes “Kaliyamman”, or Brahman becomes “Birman”. Even the facial features of the Gods have more South-East Asian features. While we’re there, we see worshippers who look Vietnamese (and not on Indian descent) come and offer prayers. Hinduism took root in the country among the Cham people and they along with the Indian Hindus remain the main followers of Hinduism. It’s the Cham people who are spread throughout the continent in Cambodia, Thailand, etc and the force behind the temples in Angkor Wat and Bagan. It is fascinating how culture spreads and adapts to local context over time.
From the temple we walk over to the Café Apartment. Now this is one novel place and I have not seen anything of this sort before. The Café Apartment use to be a residential building with small apartment units. These apartment units now have been turned primarily into café’s and shops. One can keep climbing multiple floors and each floor has a café, each with it’s own unique aesthetic—one is a cool hip place vibrant with music, another is dreamy for people who want to come have a coffee and read a book or write while another is like a Victorian chic tea house. Coffee and conversations are had at Thinkers and Dreamers and then I head over to Ngon restaurant for our team dinner with our client—Minh. I get the Thai curry, which is really tasty. But more than the food it’s the ambience which is awesome. It’s a huge place with amazing oriental décor of lamps and green plants. Conversations are had about HBS, Minh’s time there, his childhood, why he decided to return back to Vietnam and why the movies. Growing up in a very poor family where even food was scarce he describes going to the movies for the first time and being amazed by the experience. He wants more people to feel the thrill of the cinemas. The story of his parents who were soldiers and factory worker and overtime delved into different businesses and improve their financial well-being is super inspiring. After dinner we go to an ice-cream place, Bach Dang, which has amazing coconut ice-cream. Back to the hotel, some work on the laptop and off to sleep.
