i feel like if youre selling access to videos like tutorials or something the captions on your video should probably at least ATTEMPT to meet the standard quality, accuracy, formatting and availability requirements for tv/film captioning.
#been doing some game dev tutorials on a website and theyre good but#its exceedingly obvious that after like the first lesson they just use some auto-captioning service#evidenced by 'Godot' (the fucking game engine the tutorials are for) being captioned as 'Guido' SEVERAL TIMES PER VIDEO#like im glad you have captions at all but this shit would not be allowed in any other industry that standardizes and regulates captions#ill complain but they wont do anything because its cheaper and faster to make an AI do it#shut up green

honestly, at this point, most institutions' talk about being inclusive to people with disabilities rings so hollow to me because there's so often little to no work done to back it up. it doesn't matter how pretty your words sound if you don't actually do the damn work.
#the work in this case - sending an email to disability services with links to the inaccessible content#because disability services won't accept an email from me as a student 🙄#i also had to laugh when the university orientation video about how inclusive it is didn't have cc#there was no auto caption option bc it wasn't even on yt so i just had to do my damn best to make out what i could#it is also very frustrating when the dept organizes events last minute which gives very little time to get certain accommodations in place#imo advance planning is an essential part of accessibility but so many people don't want to recognize that lol#god i'm so tired of this university! i wish that i'd been able to get this degree at a uni i know is better about these things#part of me wants to give up but honestly i can see this field needs my perspective#sorry rant over LOL going back to vg blogging now

honestly audio on shit these days is so garbage (and has been going that way for years) that i can't even follow along with video DUBBED IN MY NATIVE LANGUAGE if there aren't subtitles or closed captions available
like
i cannot be turning the volume up so loud that if somebody screams it damages my hearing or every bit of action in a fight scene shakes the walls just to be able to pick out the normal conversational volume level spoken words from the music and background audio
it takes so much brainpower to try and pick out what's being said and process the words that i can't focus on the action or follow the plot along because it's eating up all my mental resources just trying to figure out what's being spoken.

#for the record this is about like actual professional releases and shit where they SHOULD be able to afford#better quality handling of the audio or are being streamed on an official service that should be able to afford captions#i don't expect that from videos of like 'i found this cool bug on my walk let me ramble about how neat it is' from some rando online#i get that providing good quality audio mixing is a skill and same thing with adding good quality and well-timed subs and captions#but like if you're a professional and this is professionally produced content there's no excuse for this shit#(obviously it's all cost-cutting because cheaper is better and fuck anybody who gets screwed but i hate it)
