{Am I making a headcanon post before I've even made the tags? Yes. Yes I am.}
I just really want to talk about the scene in which Bryon first comes into contact with Clive again after living for so long without his family. He lost his brother and nephews all in one fell swoop, all of which he had a very good and loving relationship with. And immediately after, Anabella turned her back on the Duchy as well, and he was forced to watch Rosaria fall to the Empire.
I want to specifically talk about how when he comes in he's full of hot air and righteous anger like, "Who is coming in here pretending to be my nephew!?" and then he looks at him and has that little hiccup where he has to look away and shake his head. It's such a small gesture, but they way he acts there gives you the impression that this probably isn't the first time he's seen Clive in something. Like he actively has to stop himself and remind himself that no, that isn't Clive. That isn't his nephew that he misses so much.
How many times do you think he saw a stranger on the street, and they were just similar enough that he dared to think for just a moment that Clive or Joshua or Elwin had come home? How many times do you think someone dressed up a look-alike in order to slip into the good graces of the great businessman and incredibly wealthy Lord Rosfield in order to get ahold of his wealth? How many times do you think someone tried to play the long lost nephew or brother card in order to take advantage of him or try to gain status? How many times did he come this close to believing it only to have what little hope was left in him dashed against the ground?
So when he shakes his head and looks back up. When he raises his chin and says in a cold, seething voice, "Clive Rosfield is dead."
I think he's not even talking to Clive in that moment. He's talking to himself. And he has to do that constantly.
No wonder Byron is always in such good spirits. How miserable his life must have been before finding Clive again.

oh just found out that the meaning of nightingale's cape name is apparently not as self-evident as i'd assumed so breakdown of the meanings of all the alt vic & meeb cape names
dauphine - historical title of the crown princess of france
palatine - historical rank within some royal courts, etymologically related to "paladin". coincidentally also anatomically refers to the inside of the mouth
queen of hearts - the one from alice in wonderland. often confused with the red queen, who's only in the second book, alice through the looking glass
heracles - you would think it's because of the "trying to make up for wrongs committed while magically induced into a blind murderous rage" thing, and it is, but it's also because of the "wearing the impervious skin of a beast over his own" thing
gloryblaze - play on "blaze of glory" and "glory days". even dumber than "manpower" and "laserdream" because he doesn't even have fire-related powers, just light
nightingale - florence nightingale is considered the founder of modern nursing. coincidentally, "florence nightingale syndrome" refers to the (likely imagined) phenomenon of nurses falling in love with their patients
helios - sun deity, he has light powers like the sun, his costume is eclipse-themed as previously discussed
swan queen - swan maidens are a common fairy tale motif wherein a girl is transformed into a swan, or a swan into a girl; often the story involves taking the swan's wings away and hiding them to force her to remain in the form of a girl. related, by some measures, to the story of the crane wife, or potentially the ugly duckling
margrave - archaic feudal title, etymologically related to "marquis"; in some languages the two terms are not distinguished
vicereine - feminine feudal title for one who acts in the absence of/as extension of the will of the ruler
artemis - moon deity, associated with hunting & archery, her costume is crescent moon-themed as previously discussed
prince du sang - historical title for male descendants of a sovereign, usually translated from french as "prince of the blood"

Mary Leiter, Lady Curzon, wearing a 1903 gown, The Peacock Dress", by Jean-Philippe Worth (House of Worth) • Portrait by William Logsdail (English,1859-1944) • 1909

Lord and Lady Curzon (who was American) would end up in India, then a part of the English Empire. Lord Curzon was made Viceroy of India, which made his wife the Vicereine- the highest title that a woman in India could hold at the time.
To celebrate the 1902 coronation of King Edward VII, Lord Curzon decided to hold a grand party in honor of the new monarch in 1903, known as the Delhi Durbar. For the occasion, Mary was to have the most incredible gown created which would showcase the talents of Indian artisans, a personal passion of the Vicereine. However, the dress was to be designed and sewn by famed French couturier, House of Worth. The Edwardian gown was made from fabric painstakingly embroidered in India, which was then sent to France to be fashioned before being sent back to India. What makes this gown so unbelievably unique is that every part of the gown and train is embroidered in alternating peacock feather patterns, earning it the nickname of the "Peacock Dress". The decoration comes from metal threads expertly affixed to the fabric. The gown is also embellished with glass beads, rhinestones, and shimmering iridescent green beetle wings. The gown is so covered in embroidery that it weighs 10 pounds, more than the weight of a small load of laundry!
The Resplendent Outfit: The outrageous, extravagant, often humorous, and sometimes beautiful outfits worn by the subjects of old portraits.
Outrageous ? (It depends on where you sit.)
Extravagant ✅️
Humorous. ❎️
Beautiful. ✅️

Jean Gossaert (copia): «Retrato de Mencía de Mendoza», 1532-1535. Musée Condé, Chantilly.
She was Marchioness of Zenete, Countess of Nassau, Duchess of Calabria and Vicereine of Valencia
She was a leading figure of the Renaissance in the Netherlands and known for her progressive opinions of the education of women.
A disciple of Juan Luis Vives, she was an admirer of Erasmus of Rotterdam. Mencia de Mendoza was called the most Erasmian woman in Spain.
However, the artistic patronage of Mencía de Mendoza did not stop at acquiring works of art, but included more public initiatives, such as the University of Valencia project or the patronage of students from Valencia, on whom she bestowed grants for studying at different Spanish and European universities. At the same time, the Marchioness of Zenete emerges as a key figure for analysing artistic‐cultural relations between Spain and the Low Countries in the first half of the sixteenth century. Her relationship with other Spaniards, both those living outside Spain, such as Felipe de Guevara or Juan Luis Vives, and those within, who acted as her intermediaries in the purchase of works of art, was also important in this respect. As patron and intermediary, Mencía de Mendoza acted as ‘cultural ambassador’ for Spanish art in Breda and for Flemish art in Castile and Aragon.

The Peacock Dress worn by Lady Curzon (1903)
History of the dress:
(This info was found on the national trust collection website. I didn’t write it)
Lady Mary Curzon became Vicereine of India upon on her husband’s appointment as Viceroy in 1898. She recorded her experience of India in diaries and countless letters, a life revolving around a calendar of social events staged to symbolise the authority of the British Empire. Despite frequent ill-health, Lady Curzon was the public face of the Viceroyalty and her life was scrutinised and reported on by the press. She had a keen interest in fashion and was aware of the importance of her appearance as the wife of a political figure. Known for her preference of combining Indian textiles with European fashion styles, Lady Curzon wore this gown, known as Peacock Dress, at the 1903 Delhi Durbar Coronation Ball. The Ball was the pinnacle of two weeks of events marking the succession of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra as Emperor and Empress of India. It was held in the Diwan-I-Khas at the Red Fort, Delhi, the historic residence of the Mughal Emperors. Lady Curzon’s dress deliberately referred to – or, as the historian Nicola J. Thomas writes, ‘replaced’ – the Peacock Throne which had originally stood in the Diwan-I-Khas (Thomas 2007, p. 392). This dazzling jewelled throne, now lost, was made for Shah Jahan in the early 17th century but was looted during the Persian invasion of Nader Shah in 1739. A replica throne was destroyed in 1857 when the British commandeered the Red Fort as a garrison in India’s First War of Independence. The gown was made of Zardozi embroidered fabric traditionally used for elaborate Mughal court garments and palace furnishings. The technique takes its name from the densely worked metal thread; zar (gold) and dozi (work). It used the peacock image for its pattern, a symbol of great significance in Indian culture and the Hindu religion. The use of this motif would have been noted by all who saw it. The fabric was embroidered at the workshop of Kishan Chand in India and is likely to have been sourced by Lady Mary herself before being shipped to Paris to be made into a dress by the House of Worth (Thomas, 2007). Mary was unusual in her choice to wear Indian textiles, and to have many of her clothes made up in India. This would not have gone unnoticed in the higher echelons of Indian society, among Maharajas and Maharanis at state functions. Other gowns worn by Lady Curzon in India are in the collection of the Fashion Museum, Bath.

Appearance:
Tumblr media
TLDR: Byron Rosfield is the brother of Archduke Elwin and a smart businessman that has maintained a place in the favor of Sanbreque. He is deeply involved with his family and is easy to get along with, just as long as you don’t criticize his morals. Despite his work in commerce, he’s also skilled on the battlefield.
Background: Byron Rosfield was born the second son of the archduke of Rosaria and younger brother of Elwin Rosfield, who would later go on to take his father’s place. As the second born, there was never any expectation for Bryon to inherit the throne or title of archduke, and thus he was able to live a much more free and lively existence than his brother. Byron was a loud and playful child, and while that was often a means for his getting in trouble, he brought life to an otherwise somewhat stuffy existence. However, his family was warm and loving despite his antics, and he grew to learn compassion and respect for all peoples be they bearer or dominant as he grew older. Once he came of age, he was given a lump sum of money by his family and sent away to start his life on his own, and start he did. Take the money he was given, Bryon began making investments, and before long he was a well-respected tradesman, even going on to become the warden of the Port Isolde. But while a businessman by trade, Byron was no less intimidating on the battlefield where he wielded an axe and to this day claims to have made a name for himself. Furthermore, while Byron never found time in his busy life to settle down himself, he was ever present in the lives of his brother and his family, tending to his nephews as if they were his own children. He played with his nephews extensively and tried to give them a good life in addition to (and sometimes in spite of) the lives they already lead. After the Night of Flames, Byron stole away and sought to preserve himself by keeping loyal to the empire, doing everything he could to keep his wealth and status. Secretly he supported the Guardians and the work they did, and when he discovered Clive was still alive he immediately abandoned his song and dance to join the cause to bring equality to Valisthea.
Abilities: Byron is a savvy businessman with a good handle on both politics and casual banter. He is also quite skilled in battle, being able to keep pace with his nephew and other members of his crew. Byron also has an uncanny ability to keep a high spirit in some of the darkest of circumstances, able to work at keeping morale of those around him up even during difficult times.
Personality: Byron has a bright and jovial personality, being inclined to make jokes and playful banter with anyone he shares a space with, even in the heat of battle. He has no trouble making friendly with strangers and creating what can become deep and emotional relationships over a short amount of time. That being said, he has a very strong sense of justice and morality, and he has little patience for those who do not share his ideals. If you don’t respect bearers, you’re not likely to fall high on his list of acquaintances. Similarly, while Byron has a deep dislike for politics and the people entrenched in them, he has developed a good sense of discretion when dealing with them. He can handle himself in most social situations, even ones he isn’t particularly keen on being a part of. In fact, he’s far more likely to get into explosive arguments with his close friends than he is strangers.
Relationships: Byron has a very strong sense of community and family, caring deeply for his nephews and willing to throw every ounce of his hard-earned money into aiding them during their journey. If one is to be close to him at all, getting in the good graces of his family is a good way to earn his trust. He isn’t difficult to be friends with, either, as he often actively enjoys talking and getting to know others, and making friends is almost as easy as supporting his viewpoints and way of life. When it comes to romance, he isn’t particularly opposed to the idea, but it is certainly the farthest thing from his mind. With his world in minor chaos and so much to do, he’s not spending much time worrying about finding love. However, he isn’t entirely against the idea, on occasion even imagining settling down with someone once the world is at peace again.
Hobbies: Byron’s most prominent hobby is collecting rare treasures. He isn’t shy at all about spoiling himself with material luxuries, and he will spend large chunks of his wealth on obtaining pieces to enrage his close friend and collecting rival Havel. He also enjoys sparring for fun and keeping up his form with some practice. It’s especially fun with inexperienced young men and women who could learn a thing or two from a more experienced arm.
