TTS FAVORITES WEEK, DAY TWO: FAVORITE FRIENDSHIP
I really love the friendship that developed between these two in season 3! 🥹 (Honestly, if Cassandra and Eugene just didn't exist, I would probably ship these two... But they do, so I don't. Though I still find the ship adorable).💖

Scent of the Sun
Co-Author: @flirty-freckles Fandom: Tangled the Series Rating: M Characters: Rapunzel, Varian, Eugene Fitzherbert Relationships: Rapunzel/Varian Tags: Aged-Up Character(s), Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Varipunzel, Werewolf Varian, Transformation, Pining, Fluff, Licking, Scenting, Predator/Prey, Kidnapping, Memory Loss, Eventual Smut Summary: Frustration, resentment, yearning...these are just a few of the bitter feelings the curse of the wolf thrives and feeds upon. Taking on the desires of its host, it destroys inhibitions and bestows the power to take what it wants. And what its host wants...is the heart of the princess.
Read on Ao3 https://archiveofourown.org/works/40651593/chapters/101853225
Rapunzel’s heart pounded against her ribs, her breath rasping in her throat as she tore through the moonlit forest, branches grasping and snagging at her clothes and hair. She could hear the heavy footfalls of the beast behind her, each snapping twig and huffing breath sending a new frisson of icy fear coursing up her spine.
Maybe she should have seen this coming—she’d gone off into the forest alone in pursuit of a werewolf, not even thinking about the consequences. She’d wanted to help protect them from the hunter, but now she was undoubtedly the one being hunted…and she was truly terrified that it would rip her apart if it managed to catch her.
She cried out as a sharp tug on her scalp jerked her to a stop, her hands flying up into the golden strands as she twisted to see that her braid had snagged on a gnarled branch. Her breath rattled from her lungs in terrified pants as her fingers scrabbled for the beads.
The scent of her quickened fear was acrid in the nostrils of her pursuer, her choked cry singing in his ears. He heard every lilting note, and knew that something had snagged her. He noted with satisfaction that twin human paws were not made for running through thick woods.
High above, the full moon called to the fervor running through him, thrumming with the beat of his engorged heart as his paws pounded into the soft earth. Ahead of him there was a flicker of shimmering gold as he passed through a break in the treeline. It momentarily lit the tunnel of his vision formed by the canopy around them.
If he was agile, her delay would be almost enough for him to catch her...but she was quick to untangle herself and take off running again, hair bundled into her arms. Small balls fell to the forest floor. They belonged to her, smelled like her, so he snapped some into his mouth as he ran by.
They were closer now than they had been throughout this hunt, every landing of his feet closing the distance between them. She would either tire, or be cornered, or trip over that mass of magic-drenched hair, of that he was certain.
And then…he would finally be able to quell the hunger that roared in his chest, fueled by the very frustration and anger that had given him this form.
Rapunzel knew she’d lost precious time untangling herself from that branch, and it dawned on her that this deep in the woods, it would only be a matter of time before the wolf caught her. That is, unless she did something besides run.
Her eyes darted around frantically. Maybe…maybe if she could get up into the trees? There was a chance it wouldn’t follow her there!
Her eyes caught on a large tree limb that looked solid enough to hold her. Skidding to a stop, she tossed a section of hair, years of practice allowed her to snag the branch with ease. Feeling hopeful for the first time since this chase began, she wasted no time scrambling up the length of hair, gathering it to her as she climbed so it wouldn’t leave a trail.
She had just managed to steady herself on the branch when the hulking form of the werewolf broke through the treeline, leaves crunching as he came to a stop beneath her.
He panted, not because he was winded, but because of his growing excitement when he saw that his prize had cornered herself. He was heavy now, but also strengthened, and with his claws the tree would be no obstacle.
He circled the tree once, making sure there weren’t any tricks lying in wait, then sunk his claws into the bark, standing on his hind legs and stretching himself up the trunk.
Pressing her lips into a thin line to keep them from trembling, Rapunzel whipped her hair to another, higher branch of a different tree and launched herself, making sure her swing would bring her nowhere near the ground. Wolves weren’t known to climb trees, but this one seemed to have the advantage of possessing opposable thumbs along with the vague shape of a human, and she’d be foolish to assume it wouldn’t try to climb after her.
If she kept moving, it wouldn’t get the chance.
The wolf growled, knowing he would be far too heavy to jump from tree to tree. He couldn't count on being supported by every branch he touched down on.
Claws retracted from the trunk. He might not be able to follow up, but he could stalk her from the ground. She would have to come down eventually.
Rapunzel swung through the trees, her panic subsiding marginally when she saw that the werewolf hadn’t followed her into the treetops. But it was still following her, and she sincerely hoped that she’d be able to reach a safe place sooner than later.
Luck, however, was not on her side, as the very next tree branch she lassoed snapped beneath her weight, rotten in a place she hadn’t noticed in her haste.
She tumbled to the forest floor far sooner than the wolf had anticipated, the sound of cracking wood and her cry of alarm summoning him to where she landed hard amidst the fallen leaves and grass. He skidded to a halt, his girth casting her in shadow as he loomed over her.
This was the source of his anger. Not some distant orb in the sky whose light followed him like a thorn stuck in his fur—this girl, this woman he could smell. He couldn't ascertain how long he'd been waiting, just that the bitterness billowing within him hungered for her.
Rapunzel gasped, scrambling backwards, only to meet the rough bark of the very tree that had sent her crashing to the forest floor. She flattened herself against it, feet shuffling in the leaves as a soft whimper escaped her. She was trapped.
“P-please…” was all she managed to squeak out, her voice catching in her throat. She wanted to appeal to their humanity, to the person trapped inside the beastly body, but fear had nearly frozen her vocal cords.
The fearful quiver in her voice struck a different chord in the wolf. One softer than the anger billowing around it. But it would not be enough to stop him, not when he finally had her within reach.
He leaned down, saliva dripping from his jowls as he reached his paw to her throat. A phrase came to mind, unbidden, but only came out as a low rumble.
His growl instilled a fresh wave of trepidation within the princess, and her eyes squeezed shut as she felt his claws catch the clasp of her dress, popping the bit of metal open to reveal the delicate flesh of her neck. Surprisingly, she did not feel the sting of his claws as they dragged the material wider, exposing her collarbone and the slope of her shoulders.
The scent of her filled his nostrils unhindered in the absence of the silk trappings against her neck, his ruff bristling with expectation. As he extended a thickly muscled limb to brace against the tree above her, a tuft of colored fur fell over his face, landing along his maw. He stared past it, taking in the way she trembled in his shadow, and a strange sense of hesitance rippled through him.
When he made no move to rake his claws across her flesh or sink his fangs into her, Rapunzel cautiously cracked her eyes open again. She looked up into the wolfish face, the bright blue eyes glowing with unnatural power, one of them partially blocked by…a blue streak of fur?
A familiar face flashed in her mind’s eye, and she gasped, realization leaning her closer despite the danger. “Varian?”
The wolf’s ears perked forward. Varian. That was...that was his name. That was him.
His jowls quivered, misshaped sounds gurgling in his throat: "ꉣꌅꂑꋊꀯꈼꌚꌚ..."
Rapunzel took a deep, shaky breath. So she wasn’t mistaken. This was Varian. His reaction and the guttural, gravelly noise that came from his throat, speaking the title her friend so often called her, erased any lingering doubt in her mind.
His anger was receding like rime in sunlight now, and the feeling left behind was...
He continued his downward movement, nails raking into the bark, until the tip of his snout was in line with her freckled nose. But the fear Rapunzel had felt before was muted and distant now that she knew who was inhabiting the body before her.
Before she could blink, he swerved to the nape of her neck, rubbing his fur against her as he breathed over her flesh, the soft warmth having an oddly calming effect. Slowly, she lifted her hands, settling them on either side of his head, fingers weaving into his surprisingly silky fur. “Oh Varian…what’s happened to you?”
"ꂑ... ꂑꋖ'ꌚ..." the next word evaded him, lying somewhere beyond the reach of his focus.
He drew his humanoid paw back from the wood as he retracted his claws. A single oversized finger trailed along the line of her jaw and through a golden wisp of her hair.
Realizing that talking must be difficult for him, since he didn’t exactly have a mouth shaped for words, Rapunzel simply nodded understandingly…though she couldn’t help but swallow as his clawed finger touched her skin. But it didn’t hurt her, tracing her jawline almost gently.
The anger that had fueled Varian still teased at the edge of his mind, taunting its return. He could not lose her again...but there was a matter of knowing it was her, even through the haze of the moon's wrath.
He trailed his extended tongue along the skin of her shoulder, savoring the sweet salt of her earlier exertion, the reward enough to cloud his worry even as she let out a squeak.
“V-Varian!” she exclaimed, though the light tickle of the action made her voice quiver with an involuntary giggle. She shifted her hand to gently push his muzzle away. “Don’t! I’m all sweaty!”
Aaaand, it was a little bit strange to be licked by…well, Varian.
The sound of her delight swam in his ears, and it only made him want to lick her again. But before that...
Rapunzel blinked as his massive, clawed hand gathered her wrists together, and she let out a small surprised ‘oh’ as his other paw reached the curve of her waist, pushing between her back and the tree. His hands were so big he could easily close his fingers around the smallest part of her waist if he wanted to. But more pressing than that was why he was wrapping his hands around her at all.
“Um…what are you doing?” She gave her wrists a slight tug, hinting to him that he could let go, before her efforts were sidelined by him nuzzling her again, which honestly was kind of endearing.
He growled in response to her noise, but when she didn't move to accommodate his paw, he decided not to force the issue, simply raising her loosely bound wrists up against the tree behind her as he nuzzled the spot he had licked, wiping the saliva away into his fur.
“Ah, h-hey!” Rapunzel squirmed as he raised her hands above her head, not understanding his intentions in the slightest. His growl was…mildly concerning, but when he did nothing more than rub himself against her, she was left even more confused. And there was the fact that it felt kind of nice, because he was awfully soft, but…
He shifted the spot he was nuzzling against her, the shorter fur of his neck rubbing against the crook of her neck insistently. Somehow he knew that the patch of fur there housed something important, something of a matter of...identity. He continued for several seconds, until a whiff of his scent came back to him.
Pulling away, he pointed his nose to the opposite side, intending on marking that spot as well, just in case.
“Varian, this is…this is getting kind of weird.” Rapunzel lifted a foot to push against his muscled stomach, though she was careful to be gentle. The last thing she wanted was for him to perceive her as a threat, because the memory of being hunted by him was still very very fresh.
He growled again, annoyed at her resistance...but also aware that he could easily break her. She was just so tiny now. He released her wrists, concerned he might crush them in his irritation, and brushed the tip of his nose against her cheek before allowing her to push him away a few inches.
The touch of his cold wet nose against her cheek made Rapunzel shiver, but his release of her wrists and granting her space released a tension in her shoulders she hadn’t even realized she’d been holding.
But it made her wonder. Was he rubbing against her because he wanted comfort? It couldn’t be easy being turned into a werewolf. If that was the case, maybe she could do something to help.
Curling her legs beneath her, she patted her lap, inviting him to lay his head down with an encouraging smile. “Here, why don’t you rest for a minute? I can…scratch behind your ears, maybe?” She hoped he didn’t think she was patronizing him, but he’d been exhibiting some fairly canine behaviors…
He cocked his head, following the motions of her hands, trying to match it to the sound of her voice. She seemed to now want him to...sit with her, after trying to push him away. He huffed through his nostrils, but made to carefully crawl back into her lap.
He was...far too large to simply sit, especially for a frame as small as hers...but his head could fit amiably into the space on her lap. Rolling to the side, he dropped against the dirt and leaves with a light pompf before laying his head on her knee.
Rapunzel giggled as he flopped against her like an oversized puppy, bringing both hands to rest on his head. It was heavy in her lap, but she didn’t mind, scratching at the soft fur behind his ear with one hand while the other smoothed the ruff of fur on his neck. “Your fur is so soft,” she complimented him.
An aimless rumble rolled through his throat, lilting into a satisfied sound as she scratched the tough spot behind his ear. His paws were too big, and his rear legs not quite angled the right way to reach his head.
As her fingers weaved into the fur on his neck and rubbed, the rage that had swelled before shriveled, quelled by the softness of her hand against the tight muscles of his neck. His tongue relaxed, peeking through the front of his teeth before a yawn let the pink muscle roll out.
Some dirt fell away, as well as a couple of beads, landing in the dip of her lap.
Rapunzel blinked, one hand moving to pluck a bead from her lap, instantly recognizing it as one of her own. He must have snapped them up during the chase, and while she wasn’t quite sure what to make of the reasoning behind it, it amused her nonetheless. “Aw, thank you Varian!” she cooed, dropping the bead to renew the scratches behind his ear. “I never expected to see those again!” Especially not covered in doggy drool, but honestly it didn’t bother her that much.
The higher trill of her reply sent his slowing heart all aflutter as her fingers continued to work magic through the mats in his fur. As her attention wandered to the tight spots behind his ears, there was a heady rush, making him lightheaded. His senses dulled, the thick smell of the forest waning as his thoughts drifted with the motion of her hands.
Rapunzel smiled as Varian’s head became heavier still in her lap, his body completely relaxed. This was just what he needed, wasn’t it? The strange urge to call him a ‘good boy’ the same way she would a cute dog in the street had her biting her lip to suppress a laugh. This was such a stark contrast from the terror she’d experienced just a few moments prior.
“You know, I didn’t expect you to be the werewolf,” she told him conversationally, brushing her fingers along the top of his head before trailing them to gently rub the short fur along his snout.
He gave a gravelly mumble in reply. His thoughts were coming and going gently, nothing like his earlier hunter mindset.
An eye lazily glided open as her hand move to a spot on his neck. The pale moonlight was now tinged with the early signs of morning.
Distantly there was a thought of home, and with a sudden jerk, he realized that he wasn't sure where he would go from here. More importantly, Rapunzel would have to part from him...and she was probably tired after the chase.
The sudden jerk of his head surprised Rapunzel, and her hands stilled. “What’s wrong?” she asked, glancing at the surrounding trees. Had something spooked him?
He pointed his muzzle toward the changing sky, hoping she'd catch his drift.
Following his gaze, Rapunzel realized that the night sky was beginning to lighten, the colors of twilight becoming apparent on the horizon. “Oh!” The chase must have lasted a lot longer than she’d thought. Her gaze flicked back down to meet Varian’s. “Does this mean you’re going to change back soon?”
An aimless noise rumbled up through his throat. Change...he tried to think about it, but the haze over his human memories was almost impassible.
"ꉓꃄꋫꁹꁅꑾ..."
Whatever that meant, what mattered more was making sure Rapunzel was at least safe. He shifted his weight, leaning back on his haunches as he lifted off her lap.
Taking his gravelly utterance as confirmation, Rapunzel uncurled her legs and slowly rose to her feet, reaching back to steady herself against the tree trunk since Varian was still just a little too close to step away just yet. Gosh, he sure gave off a lot of body heat, didn’t he?
"Do you want some privacy?" she asked, unsure of how the curse worked exactly when it came to the nuances of the transformation, but wanting to respect his boundaries.
Another strange question, one with a concept that seemed even less familiar. But she seemingly wanted to give him respect, if her tone was any indication.
Shaking his head, his focus shifted back to the task of getting Rapunzel somewhere safe. He was faster and stronger than her by far, and together they would move more quickly.
Her surprised squeak was a delight, if a little high as he kneeled down and wrapped his clawed hands around her shoulders and behind her knees, her legs buckling from the soft yet insistent pressure and leaving her to fall into his hold. She instinctively grabbed a handful of fur at his chest as her equilibrium shifted, fingers weaving into the thick pelt.
“Varian, what…?” Had she been wrong about him shifting into a human again?
Once he was certain she was secure in his arms, he gripped her firmly to limit her squirming, and took off in a brisk run towards what he vaguely remembered as home.
O-oh, he was going to carry her? Not that she really minded—she had no idea where they’d ended up in the forest, and his wolf senses would be able to guide them. But…to where? Old Corona?
“Varian, wait!” she called up to him, the wind whipping her hair and catching her words as she tugged at his fur. She hoped Eugene had managed to subdue Captain Creighton, but if that crazy woman saw Varian in his werewolf form…
“There’s a hunter looking for you in Old Corona! She might still be there!”
"ꃄꌇꁹ꓅ꑾꋪ..."
That was something he at least understood. But if this…hunter was trying to hunt him, then he would show Rapunzel that there was nothing to fear.
He continued his fast pace, his clawed feet digging into the ground a little harder as he panted with anticipation.
Oh no…her warning wasn’t supposed to excite him! What if he went after Creighton directly?! She didn’t want anyone to fight!
Rapunzel twisted into him so she could reach up and catch hold of the tuft of fur on his cheek, trying to distract him from whatever was going on in that head of his. ”Varian! I don’t want you to get hurt! Or…or to hurt anyone!”
He wasn't the one who was going to hurt...and while he loathed the idea of cowering in the face of another predator, simply scaring his opponent into retreat was certainly less risky. Less chance of Rapunzel getting hurt. Less chance of him getting hurt.
He nuzzled her hand, hoping it would communicate that he understood, at least a little.
His nuzzle was…mildly reassuring in addition to being adorable, but without verbal communication Rapunzel wasn’t sure if it was him agreeing not to fight, or him trying to reassure her of…some other intention. She wouldn’t know until they reached their destination, so she’d have to be ready to intervene if things went south. It was clear that Varian was carrying anger inside of him, something that he’d hidden until the wolf curse had taken hold of him, and she worried he would turn back into the terrifying beast that had chased her through the woods if he got into an altercation.
She let her hand slip from his face, tucking it back against her chest as she bit her lip and looked forward again, the wind howling in her ears as they continued to race through the trees.

Scarred Touch
Fandom: Tangled the Series Rating: T Characters: Rapunzel, Varian Relationships: Rapunzel/Varian Tags: Fluff, Scars, Soft Touches
Summary: Rapunzel touches Varian's ungloved hand for the first time.
Read on Ao3 https://archiveofourown.org/works/40541937
His hands were scarred.
That was what Rapunzel noticed the first time she touched the skin beneath Varian’s gloves.
Sitting across the table from him, her fingers skimmed over a slightly raised burn mark just behind the second knuckle of his index finger, then trailed to the whitish line that pathed across two tendons on the back of his hand. There were other markings, small nicks and burns and poorly healed abrasions, and Rapunzel made a point to memorize each and every one of them.
“So many,” she breathed softly, lifting her eyes to meet his gaze. “How did you get them?”
Varian hummed, propping his chin with the hand not currently in the princess’s possession. “Well, some are from lab…mishaps, and a few are from helping my dad around the farm.” He cracked a lopsided grin and shrugged. “It’s just what happens when you work with your hands a lot—I’d probably have even more if I didn’t wear gloves.”
Rapunzel nodded as she continued to trace the markings, the light, soothing touch making Varian’s eyelids droop slightly.
The concept of scarring had been foreign to Rapunzel for eighteen years, and while enough time had passed for her to accumulate a few small scuffs of her own, Varian had an entire lifetime’s worth of stories etched into his skin.
“I’m actually a bit jealous,” she confided, and Varian’s expression of sleepy content melted into one of confusion, his brows raising to his hairline.
“Of my scars?”
Rapunzel smiled softly. “Of your stories.” Lifting his hand from the table, she cuddled it against her cheek, relishing the mild rasp of the callouses that edged his palm and tipped his fingers. “Each one of these is proof that you’ve lived your life to the fullest.”
Varian blinked. “Huh. I…never thought of them like that.” Truth be told, he wore gloves so often that he never really gave the scattered marks on his hands and forearms a second thought.
“Will you tell me about them?” Rapunzel asked, eyes sparkling as she pressed a kiss to his thumb.
A dusting of pink spread crept across Varian’s nose and cheeks, and he rubbed the back of his neck with a small, pleased grin. “I mean, sure, if you want. And…if you’re interested…” He leaned in conspiratorially. “I’ve got scars a few other places~” He waggled his eyebrows suggestively, and Rapunzel broke into a fit of giggles as she swatted at his chest.
“We’ll get to those later,” she promised. “Now, tell me how you got this one…”

Apron Strings
Fandom: Tangled the Series Rating: T Characters: Rapunzel, Varian Relationships: Rapunzel/Varian Tags: Flirting, Teasing, Rapunzel wearing Varian’s clothes
Summary: Varian asks Rapunzel to assist him with a project in his lab and gets more than he bargained for. Not that he’s complaining.
Read on Ao3 https://archiveofourown.org/works/40564887
“Rapunzel, are...are those my goggles? And my apron?”
“Oh, Varian!” Rapunzel turned to face the alchemist with a bright smile. “Hi!”
While Varian wasn’t surprised to see Rapunzel in his lab, since he had asked if she could meet him there to assist with a project, he certainly hadn’t expected to find the princess wearing his old brown work apron with a pair of goggles perched on top of her head.
The straight, narrow outline of the apron accentuated the curve of her full hips as they flared behind the material, while the apron’s low cut stretched taut across her chest. Varian knew without a doubt that if she hadn’t had a dress on underneath, it would barely offer enough coverage to keep her decent.
She very literally filled out that apron in ways his own lean frame never could before his growth spurt, which had forced him to abandon his old lab gear.
Gulping, he tugged at his collar, acutely aware of his rising body temperature…along with something else that was just a little bit more noticeable.
In response to his stunned silence, Rapunzel clasped her hands low in front of her, the apron straining even more as her breasts pressed and squeezed between her arms. “I didn’t think you’d mind, since you’ve already got an apron and…oh.”
Her eyes strayed down to the subtle tenting of the aforementioned fabric tied at his waist, and a coy grin tipped her lips as she met his eyes again. “Maybe you don’t mind…?”
Varian’s heated cheeks reddened further, and he rubbed the back of his head, looking away with a sheepish laugh. “Heh, w-well…you certainly fill it out much better than I ever did.”
Humming, Rapunzel swayed a few steps closer, bringing his gaze back to her once more. “You really think so?” She hooked a finger into the apron’s low neckline, glancing down as she gave it a little tug. “I mean, it is a little tight here…”
Varian sucked in a sharp breath. Oh, she was totally doing this on purpose.
…well. Two could play at this game.
He reached for her, wrapping an arm around her waist and tugging her closer. “I think you should wear it more often,” he told her, running one hand along the supple curve of her hip while the other played with the apron strings tied at her back. “But maybe next time…without the dress?” He waggled his eyebrows at her with a grin before leaning in to plant a kiss on her cheek.
“Varian!” Rapunzel laughed, bracing a hand on his chest and playfully smushing her palm against his cheek, pushing his face away. “I can’t do that! What would people say?”
Still grinning, he turned his head and nuzzled into her hand, pressing a kiss to her palm. “Nothing, hopefully. I was thinking it could be more of a…ah, private showing.”
“Private, huh?” She glanced up at him from beneath her lashes, lightly biting her lip as she slid her hand down his neck to play with his collar. “I suppose I could do that…”
“And y’know,” Varian kicked the door shut behind him, pulling her even closer. “It’s pretty private in here…”
Rapunzel nibbled at her bottom lip. “Right now? But…don’t you need help with your project?“
“Something else…came up,” Varian told her, smirking as he lightly pushed his hips against hers so there was no doubt what he was referring to. “And I could really use an assistant…”
Rapunzel’s breath hitched before bubbling into a giggle. “Gosh, I guess it can’t be helped then~” Her lips brushed against his in a featherlight touch as she whispered, “Let’s make some chemistry~”
As her plush lips fully met his with a soft ‘chu!’ Varian decided that he definitely liked it when she talked science to him.
