I finally installed the new 500 Amp Bluetooth Shunt in the battery compartment.

It is to the left of the green BIM (Battery Interconnect Manager,) that I upgraded to Lithium.

The two 300 Amp Hour batteries can take current very quickly when charging. So rather than overheating the chassis's alternator, it cycles in and out giving the alternator time to cool down.

This Shunt gives very precise information on the battery state, by basically tracking every molecule of power that goes in and out to calculate how much you have left to run things in the Motor Home.

Understanding IP Ratings on Your Solar Equipment

Technology manufacturers frequently throw around words like “waterproof” and “water-resistant.” Still, the average consumer would have a hard time describing the differences between these two terms and what they actually mean. That’s why the International Electrotechnical Commission developed the IP Code, which provides a number that ranks how much protection any electronic device has from both dust and water. Keep reading to learn how to read the IP ratings you see on your solar equipment and what they mean when it comes to protection.

 Breaking Down the Code

First, it’s important to note that those numbers are not just a scale. Each of those numbers actually represents a different kind of protection, so you need to look at the digits separately in order to understand what they mean. For example, you shouldn’t assume that an inverter with an IP43 rating has all-around better protection than an inverter with an IP35 rating.

 Depending on how the equipment is being used and where it is being installed, different IP ratings may have more benefits than others. The first digit in an IP score is the intrusion protection rating or the equipment’s level of protection from dust and solids. The second digit refers to moisture protection, or just how water resistant the equipment is.

 Understanding Each Number

Once you separate the digits in your IP code, the numbers become a simple scale of 0 to 6 for each type of protection. Here’s what the different numbers mean for intrusion protection (remember, this is the first number in your IP code):

 ●       0 = No intrusion protection

●       1 = Protected against solid objects over 50mm (e.g., accidental touch by hand)

●       2 = Protected against objects over 12mm (e.g., accidental touch by fingers)

●       3 = Protected from objects over 2.5mm (e.g., wires and tools)

●       4 = Protected against solid objects over 1mm (e.g., wires and nails)

●       5 = Some protection against dust, no harmful deposits

●       6 = Completely protected against dust intrusion

 For the second number in your IP rating, here’s how those numbers correlate with your equipment’s level of water protection:

 ●       0 = No protection

●       1 = Protected from vertically falling drops of water (e.g., condensation)

●       2 = Protected from direct sprays up to 15 degrees from vertical

●       3 = Protected from direct sprays up to 60 degrees from vertical

●       4 = Protected against water splashed in all directions, with limited moisture entry permitted

●       5 = Protected from low-pressure jets of water from all directions, with limited entry

●       6 = Protected against strong jets of water, with limited entry

 IP43 protection will usually equate to sufficient protection for solar inverters, assuming you’re using them in a normal residential setting. This level of protection can be found on the Victron converter, among others.

"After 2 years of work, we are almost there. We started with a Land Rover Defender base vehicle which we fully stripped down before starting the build on a new Marshland galvanised chassis. We completed a full nut and bolt restoration, sending all running gear components to be reconditioned. We then built a Habitation Pod on the back - the pod structure is made from an aluminium frame and skin, with each piece being handcrafted using an English wheel. Once the pod structure was complete, we insulated the interior with 60 mm of closed cell insulation. The pod interior was then cladded using 20 mm strips of bamboo, all with bead and cove routed into each strip to allow the wood to follow the curved shape of the pod. We then made the furniture out of aluminium and again skinned in bamboo, and made the counter tops out of locally source oak. The induction hob and a compressor fridge are powered by a Victron system, with a 200 ah Batter and 3 Kw inverter. This system is charged by the engine power as well as two 111 W solar panels which are on the roof. The weight of the truck as it sits now is just over 2,500 kg, which we think is lighter than you might guess.
